On today's episode of Sports Cards Nonsense, Mike and Jesse dive deep into the current state of the card market to answer a burning question: Are we experiencing another high-end bubble? Mike brings the data, comparing current sales of iconic "GOAT" cards like Michael Jordan, Kobe Bryant, and Mickey Mantle against their peak prices during the 2020-2021 COVID boom. The guys break down why cards like the '89 Upper Deck Griffey and '56 Mantle are actually seeing higher prices now than they did during the pandemic craze. Later, Jesse doubles down on his Carolina Panthers take. After claiming Bryce Young still has potential, Mike challenges him to put his money where his mouth is. Plus, the guys discuss Upper Deck's major announcement regarding NHL Rookie Debut Jersey cards and how they compare to Topps' recent innovations. They also tackle the frustration of sticker autos versus on-card signatures , the confusing release schedule for upcoming products like "Midnight" , and open up the mailbag to discuss Shaquille O'Neal's market value and Patrick Mahomes prices following his injury. 1956 is a year that Yankees fans have fond memories of... Mickey Mantle will take the triple crown, Don Larsen will pitch a perfect game in the World Series, and Whitey Ford will lead the American League in ERA and winning percentage. Today, let's listen to Ford in action. The Chicago White Sox are visiting the Bronx for a doubleheader. Ford will face a line-up that includes a young Luis Aparicio and the hot bat of Minnie Miñoso, and he's going to use his mix of calm efficiency and ruthlessness that will lead the Yankees to the World Series. Bob Elson is behind the microphone to take you through the game. You can find the boxscore here: https://www.baseball-reference.com/boxes/NYA/NYA195605061.shtml This game was played on May 6, 1956.
The Reds won the World Series 50 years ago in a classic highlighted by the amazing game six eventually won by the Red Sox on the foul-pole hitting HR by Carlton Fisk in the 12th inning. Prior to that, legend has it that Pete Rose said to Fisk "Man, isn't this the most exciting game you've ever played in?”. Rose had a knack for being in the moment and enjoying this game called baseball more than maybe any player that ever lived. And Sports Illustrated rewarded him at the end of the year by naming him “Sportsman of the Year”. Rose was at the top of his game, beloved by not only fans of the Big Red Machine, but baseball fans everywhere. His popularity transcended the game, as he was an everyday man, who played the game the right way. His work ethic and daily grind were legendary and he resonated with a great amount of folks whose lives were built around that same dedication to whatever their profession was. He was the working mans idol. Everyone could relate to this kid who was born on the wrong side of Cincinnati and was now the king of the town. A 44-game hitting streak in 1978 captured the attention of the nation before he left Cincy for Philly the following year, helping the Phils win a World Series in 1980… the 3rd and final championship of his career. He returned to the Reds as a player manager and in 1985 became the the game's all-time leader in hits before retiring as a player a year later with a still record of 4,256 knocks. And then it all came crumbling down. Keith O'Brien is also a kid from Cincinnati who grew up watching Rose in his latter years and chronicled his entire life in his bestselling book, “Charlie Hustle: The Rise and Fall of Pete Rose, and the Last Glory Days of Baseball.” It goes into great detail about Rose's humble beginnings, how he got the nickname Charlie Hustle from two of the game's greats, Mickey Mantle and Whitey Ford, and how his prowess as one of the greatest players of all-time made him one of the game's most popular players of the 20th century. But O'Brien also did countless research into Rose's gambling addiction, the people that he associated with and the eventual suspension and expulsion from baseball. He joins us on POP to discuss at length in great passion how this man of the people who was adored by legions of fans everywhere would fall from grace, and end up on the outside of the Hall of Fame looking in… literally. It's a tragic tale of the American Dream going awry. A kid who had nothing but grit and determination turns himself into one of the greatest ballplayers of all-time, only to let his addiction to betting… and betting on the game he lived for...keep him away from the thing he loved most… baseball. Join us as we look back on the year Rose was at this top his game… 1975… and the decline that would take place a decade later as we talk with Keith O'Brien to discuss his book, “Charlie Hustle: The Rise and Fall of Pete Rose and the Last Glory Days of Baseball,” on the Past Our Prime podcast. Mike and Jesse debate the massive acquisition of Beckett (BGS) by Collectors, the parent company of PSA. The guys have vehemently different reactions to the deal: Jesse believes Collectors will "save" the brand by leveraging its history and media assets, while Mike argues BGS is destined to be "gutted" like SGC. They discuss what this "monopoly" means for the hobby and whether it will actually improve PSA's turnaround times. Then, Gordy Bonker joins the show to break down a major shift in the vintage market, with record-breaking sales for Mickey Mantle and Roberto Clemente cards. He discusses Ken Goldin's theory about institutional money entering the space and whether hedge funds are finally treating cards like art. Plus, the guys discuss the London Card Show scandal, the new Arena Club "FR34K" packs, and answer a very timely mailbag question about what Collectors might buy next. The records credit Jim Bouton with the win, but everyone who followed the Yankees' 1963 season knows that the driving force in the middle of the year was Elston Howard.Stepping up into a leadership role after Mickey Mantle broke his foot and moved to the Injured List for ten weeks, the Yankees catcher would shepherd the rotation through the summer months with performance like this one, taking the young Bouton through 8 scoreless innings.Howard earned his American League MVP award by putting the Yankees on his broad shoulders.Neither should we ignore opposing pitcher Claude Osteen. The left-hander packed heat alongside an arsenal of breaking pitches. Already established as the Senators' ace, the offence would rarely back him up, and 1963 would end with a 9-14 record. The Dodgers would offer him a lifeline, and in 1965, he would join Don Drysdale, Sandy Koufax, and Johnny Podres in a devastating rotation in Los Angeles.Today? Today, you can see the difference Howard makes when supporting a young pitcher.Ewan Spence and the Classic Baseball Radio team bring you this recreated radio broadcast from 1963. Just as radio stations recreated baseball games from ticker-tape messages, we can research this classic game and present it to you as if you were listening to the radio in 1963. This should not be considered a complete or fully accurate historical record. Nevertheless, this is our story of the game. You can find the boxscore here:https://www.baseball-reference.com/boxes/NYA/NYA196306190.shtmlThis game was played on June 19, 1963We thank Retrosheet, Sports Reference, Sports Logos Net, Tom R Audio, and Crafting The Call.

What options do you have when your Game 7 starting pitcher falls ill? For the Milwaukee Braves in 1957, the answer was to call back Lew Burdette from two days' rest to pitch in the winner-takes-all duel against the New York Yankees. Burdette had already pitched two complete games and a shutout in the second. Now the weight of facing the Yankees, who were looking to go back-to-back in the Fall Classic. Meanwhile, the ferocious arm of Don Larsen — who pitched a perfect game in the 1956 World Series — was waiting for the Braves. With the respective MVPs of Hank Aaron and Mickey Mantle in the outfields, joined by Eddie Matthews and Yogi Berra offering back-up, the 1957 Series brings action, tension, and stars together. Bob Neale and Earl Gillespie are behind the radio microphones from Yankee Stadium. Meet Saw and Brittany Naing — the husband-and-wife team behind Ojai's new rock-and-roll-tinged barbecue spot, Joplin's, and the culinary force you already know from The Dutchess. Saw is executive chef and partner at The Dutchess, where his Burmese-Indian roots shape one of Ojai's most celebrated menus; at Joplin's, he channels that same precision into brisket and ribs, leaning on good cuts, time, and low, slow heat.Brittany runs the front of house at Joplin's, setting the tone for a room that's equal parts hospitality, comfort food, and guitar-amp energy. Instagram+4The Dutchess+4Saveur+4We talk about the juggle — how you staff and multi-task across two restaurants — and why culture beats chaos in a busy kitchen. Saw traces his path from Bouchon and Tallula's to becoming chef-partner at The Dutchess, and, yes, his years as a guitarist (with a soft spot for nu-metal like Korn) before kitchens became his stage. Brittany shares how the couple met working in LA restaurants, and why Joplin's leans into “food, drinks, and rock & roll” without losing sight of the essentials.Plus: why Niman Ranch ribs, a dialed-in brisket, and a FOH that truly sees guests are the secret to Ojai's newest staple. Send us a textA Hall of Fame coach with 500+ wins doesn't hang around by accident. Coach Mike Shade of Gahanna Lincoln High School (OH) opens the dugout door to 41 years of lessons: why relationships anchor a program, how practice—not pep talks—decides results, and what “all in” really means for player standards, culture, and accountability. We trace his journey from early assistant days to a sustained run in the OCC's gauntlet, where weekly battles sharpen teams for the state tournament. We dig into his non-negotiables—character, effort, and being a great teammate—and how he delivers tough feedback without leaving players in the doghouse. Mike shares how the game has evolved around travel ball and shifting norms, yet still revolves around three outs, three strikes, and a pre‑pitch plan. You'll hear why he respects umpires who hustle and prepare, and how empowering energetic assistants keeps a veteran staff fresh. Off the field, a simple tradition—his wife's annual senior pasta dinner—reveals how small, consistent acts turn a roster into a family. The stories are the heart: an unforgettable 3–2, bases‑loaded walk‑off that still gives chills, Evan White's first-base artistry that later earned a Gold Glove, and the all-time trio he'd choose to ride with—Bench behind the plate, Gibson or Koufax on the hill, and Mickey Mantle in the box. If you coach, play, or simply love baseball, you'll leave with a blueprint for sustainable success: teach clean fundamentals, correct fast and lift faster, respect the craft, and trust your people when the season shrinks to a single pitch. If this resonated, follow the show, share it with a coach or parent who cares about culture, and leave a quick review so more baseball people can find us.Join the Baseball Coaches Unplugged podcast where an experienced baseball coach delves into the world of high school and travel baseball, offering insights on high school baseball coaching, leadership skills, hitting skills, pitching strategy, defensive skills, and overall baseball strategy, while also covering high school and college baseball, recruiting tips, youth and travel baseball, and fostering a winning mentality and attitude in baseball players through strong baseball leadership and mentality.Support the show Follow: Twitter | Instagram @Athlete1Podcast Website - https://www.athlete1.net Sponsor: The Netting Professionals https://www.nettingpros.com

When Brian was preparing to head off to college, his dad asked him what he wanted to do with his life. Without hesitation, Brian said, “I want to play ball.” His dad looked him straight in the eye and replied, “Son, you're not Mickey Mantle. What are you going to do with your life?” Brian's dad had started in the mailroom at IBM and worked his way up to installing SAP systems worldwide, often away from home. The moments Brian cherished most with him were simple-going to nurseries together, spreading mulch, and working in the yard. Those experiences inspired Brian to pursue landscape horticulture at NC State. On his very first day of class, a professor told students, “Starting salary: $17,500. If you're here for money, there's the door.” Brian thought, that's $17,500 more than I have - let's go. The summer before graduation, Brian worked in Wilmington under a boss known for yelling and belittling his crew. Deflated, he returned to campus, questioning his future. A friend suggested, “Why don't you start your own business?” Brian remembered an RFP project in Professor Stu Warren's class, where he created a mock company—named Yardnique. It was the best grade Brian ever received in landscape horticulture, and Professor Warren's feedback was simple but powerful: “Great name.” At 21, Brian turned that project into reality. With nothing more than a stack of flyers and a mission to treat others the way you want to be treated, he launched Yardnique, envisioning just five employees. As the company grew, Brian was honored in 2012 with the Triangle Business Journal's 40 Under 40 Award, recognizing Yardnique's early impact. Today, nearly 29 years later, Yardnique operates over 42 locations with 2,500 employees across North Carolina, South Carolina, Florida, Georgia, Tennessee, and Alabama. Brian's journey began with a question from his dad, and has become a lifelong mission of building teams, impacting lives, and leading with purpose.

Babe Ruth backs the attack as Babe Ruth gets married, but to a guy named H.C., not a former model named Claire. Cal Raleigh goes on a rampage and Mickey Mantle finishes 1961 quietly, but why did the latter happen and what can we learn from the way he and Billy Martin lived their lives? The Infinite Inning is a journey to the past to understand the present using baseball as our time machine. America's brighter mirror, baseball reflects, anticipates, and even mocks the stories we tell ourselves about our world today. Baseball Prospectus's Steven Goldman shares his obsessions: history from inside and outside of the game, politics, stats, and Casey Stengel quotations. Along the way, we'll try to solve the puzzle that is the Infinite Inning: How do you find the joy in life when you can't get anybody out?

The Big Dumper passes Mickey Mantle and ties Ken Griffey Jr.
As we close in on five years of KKHI I can honestly say I've never seen a reaction from listeners like the past week. Everyone is upset and motivated after the assassination of Charlie Kirk and we all want to do something. It's inspiring for sure. It's been mostly good news of people on the left losing their jobs after saying horrible things about this tragedy. But KU is standing by the employee that referred to Kirk as "worm food." This can't stand. Let's get busy and call 785.864.2700 or email publicaffairs@ku.edu and let them know how you feel. Mizzou and Starbucks get it right by having the exact same policy. We should consider it a win and not complain about it. Media reports indicate Xavier Worthy is likely to play Sunday night in NY against the Giants. If he does, it appears he will be playing with a torn labrum. It was a record night at Kauffman Stadium for Seattle's "Big Dumper." He broke a record set by Mickey Mantle. KC's Carter Jensen also had a huge night and this sure bodes well for the future. A single cocktail at the US Open made them enough money to pay the first place prizes for the men's and women's singles champs. Wait until you hear how much one drink made. And our Final Final is a celebrity that truly needs help with his TDS.

There are many eye-catching storylines from the 2025 MLB season, but one that remains a captivating tale as we approach the postseason is the historic run by the man simply known as “Big Dumper.” On Tuesday night, Seattle Mariners catcher Cal Raleigh set a new single-season record for most home runs hit by a switch hitter, surpassing the immortal Mickey Mantle with 56 on the year. Jake Mintz and Jordan Shusterman discuss Cal's unbelievable campaign, how he's managed to do this while serving as the team's primary catcher and why he's now a serious contender alongside New York Yankees superstar Aaron Judge in the tight race for the 2025 American League Most Valuable Player award. Also on this episode of the Baseball Bar-B-Cast, Jake and Jordan talk about an impressive debut from Toronto Blue Jays starting pitcher Trey Yesavage and why he could be an integral part of their push for the AL East title. We are witnessing a season to remember and the only proper way to celebrate it is to acknowledge Cal-O-Ween. The Mariners are playing good baseball, they aren't just winning on good pitching or high scoring offense, they're finding a way to do it all and if they can keep it up, they'll go far. Of course, the question remains, can they keep it up? No matter how well we've done over these last 10 games, we are still only a half game up on the Astros, so theirs is no room for error. :30- There's been a lot of chatter about the play of Demond Williams Jr and Jonah Coleman, but is it too early to start hyping up postseason awards for the Dawgs? SEASON 4 EPISODE 11: COUNTDOWN WITH KEITH OLBERMANN A-Block (1:45) SPECIAL COMMENT: Jayvee Vance has got to resign as Vice President. Relax; he won't. But you cannot BE Vice President of the United States if you're crazy enough to boast about repurposing the military as a War Crime committing death squad killing probable migrants in international waters. Plus if you’re responding to tweets by the Krassensteins you’re clearly insane and unfit for office. Even under Trump.. MEANWHILE: if Trump was an FBI informant against Jeffrey Epstein that means he was a witness to everything Epstein did with those girls? And yes, Mike Johnson tried to "back off" his claim that Trump was an FBI Epstein agent late Sunday, but a) the "back off" came 72 hours after he blurted it out; b) it still implies that Trump knew about Epstein and went to the authorities about it, suggesting he had first-hand evidence like HE WAS THERE, and c) it is a cardinal tenet of QAnon that if Trump is ON the Epstein client list. "He did it for 'Merica!" might not be the flex Trump and Mike Johnson think it is ALSO: Trump was booed as he arrived at the U.S. Tennis Open yesterday. You didn’t see it because Bob Iger and ABC and Disney whored themselves out pre-censoring the truth. CBS just did that too - and worse, agreeing NOT to edit out any lies by Trump Gang members. THE PRIMARY RESIDENCE WITCH-HUNT? The mortgage app alleged white lie with which Trump hopes to bring down a Fed governor and Letitia James and Adam Schiff? The nut job releasing the alleged evidence is Bill Pulte and guess what public records show HIS OWN PARENTS DID? They ALSO CLAIMED multiple "primary residences" - and you can only have one. Oops. THERE IS SOME GOOD NEWS: per G. Elliott Morris: mainstream Trump polling is flat, unchanged. But the INTERIOR numbers? Since January Trump’s STRONG approval number - the diehards - has dropped from 34% to 24%. That's down a third. And his STRONG disapproval number - the haters - has grown from 36% to 46%. Also a third. That is unsustainable. B-Block (41:53) THE WORST PERSONS IN THE WORLD: "Gunther Eagleman" and the other similarly stupidly named Right Wing influencers now alleged to be on yet ANOTHER country's payroll. Plus the man who killed CNN John Malone may have inadvertently outed a racist: himself. And And a CBS correspondent named Robert Costa let Trump pee on his leg about Russia and all he did was report: “CBS Exclusive: Trump Exclusively Peed On MY leg!” C-Block (55:20) THINGS I PROMISED NOT TO TELL: They're going to use A.I. to try to reconstruct the infamous 43 missing minutes in the classic - possible greatest film of all time - "Magnificent Ambersons." I loathe the concept. I will watch the product as many times as they let me! But of more immediate relevance, if they ever release it, I'll be able to say I knew the star of a new 2025 film who died in 1994 and I met in 1985 only I didn't realize it was him. I swear I thought she said "Carlton." See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Few writers have illuminated baseball's legends with the depth, rigor, and heart of renowned sports journalist and author Jane Leavy. From Sandy Koufax to Mickey Mantle to Babe Ruth, her biographies of the game's greatest figures don't just recount their lives — they reveal the eras each helped to define. Now, with her new book Make Me Commissioner: I Know What's Wrong with Baseball and How to Fix It, Leavy turns her sharp eye and seasoned reporting toward the sport itself, asking what's broken, what's worth preserving, and how its lost magic might be restored. In this episode, we sit down with Leavy for a wide-ranging conversation that blends her unparalleled knowledge of baseball history with a candid assessment of its present challenges — analytics overload, youth development crises, dwindling diversity, and the struggle to balance spectacle with spontaneity. She also shares her imaginative, sometimes provocative, ideas for how the game could evolve in the years ahead. For longtime fans, casual observers, and anyone who cares about the soul of America's pastime, this episode delivers a masterclass in baseball storytelling — and a glimpse into the possible futures of the game from one of its finest chroniclers. Until now. He's been benched. (21:40) Trey Hendrickson got a $14 million raise for this season from the Bengals. Why? Why would every player not hold out now? The NFLPA must love this! Teams must hate this! (30:00) The Browns traded Kenny Pickett. Now the team is down to three. Dillon Gabriel and Shedeur Sanders are on the team. (35:40) Review: Amy Bradley is Missing.
