International Day of People with Disability (IDPWD) is 3 December 2020, and we were so grateful to have Julie Jones come onto the podcast to talk about accessible travel. She so wonderfully calls it, Travel Without Limits! Julie worked in the travel industry for many years. When her son was born with a disability her focus shifted to accessible & inclusive tourism. She founded the website Have Wheelchair Will Travel to share reviews and later co-founded Travel Without Limits magazine, Australia's first disability-specific travel publication. Enjoy this wonderful discussion about diversity, inclusion and making travel accessible for all to enjoy.

As I've learnt by listening over the years to one of our guests, one in five travellers have a disability. That's a high percentage and I guess that means there's a good number of my listeners who travel with a disability, or have a family member or friend in their travelling group with a disability. This is important stuff! In Episode 191 of The Thoughtful Travel Podcast, I chat with three people on this subject. First up, I have a great chat with Seana Smith who describes the development of her son and his travels over the years. He was diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder at the age of three, but is now an adult, and Seana tells me how his experience with travel has changed. Let's just say there's a heavy metal festival involved! Next I speak with Suzanne Kamata, who has travelled many times with her now adult daughter, a wheelchair user with cerebral palsy and a love of France (and travelling in general). Finally, I wanted to get Julie Jones back on to speak about a magazine she's started since we last chatted on the podcast several years ago, called Travel Without Limits. It's Australia's first disability-specific travel magazine and it's awesome! We all love to holiday, but for people with a disability, there can be extra challenges. Our guest on this episode of ExtraVirgin is Julie Jones, of website "Have Wheelchair Will Travel," editor of travel magazine Travel Without Limits  (Australia's first disablity-specific magazine), and mother to intrepid adventurer, Braeden, 24, who was born with cerebral palsy. Worldwide, the disability travel market is booming. In the UK, the market has expanded 3 times faster than 'regular' travel while in Australia, the inbound market is worth $10.8 billion - more than the Chinese market, yet many operators are still not up to speed when it comes to inclusive travel.  We talk to Julie about destinations who are getting it right, navigating flights and hotel rooms and her tips on how to travel without limits, whatever your ability.

It’s common to face a few difficulties when we travel but in Episode 53 of The Thoughtful Travel Podcast, Amanda chats with three guests who face more than their fair share of challenges when they travel, because they or a family member has a disability or a chronic illness. Their stories are inspiring and of course, their desire to travel trumps the potential difficulties and Amanda loves that! First up, Amanda chats with Julie Jones of Have Wheelchair Will Travel who loves to travel with her family, including her son who was diagnosed with cerebral palsy as a baby and uses a wheelchair. Her down-to-earth and positive approach helps many other families get around the various obstacles wheelchair travel introduces and see the world. You might also be surprised to learn what it was that actually got travel-loving Julie travelling again! Amanda then speaks with Ava Meena of My Meena Life, who is in her twenties and has three chronic illnesses: lupus, fibromyalgia and osteoarthritis. Despite the debilitating pain that these can inflict, she’s determined to continue to see the world. Finally, Amanda talks to fellow Aussie blogger Carly Findlay, who is a writer, speaker and appearance activist. She has a skin condition called ichthyosis and it has caused her to have some pretty unsettling encounters with airlines and border staff during her travels. Great Travel Souvenirs What do you bring back from a trip besides photographs and stories? I talked with three Australian travellers about their favourite souvenirs and how important they are as a means for remembering travel experiences. Sarah Ridout lived abroad in France, England and Ireland for over a decade before returning to Australia, and she collected a very smart kind of souvenir so that she’s constantly reminded of those experiences. Following Sarah, I chat with Julie Jones who explained that the kinds of souvenirs she and her family bring home from a trip have changed over the years.
