Theory of a Deadman - Scars & Souvenirs
Not every souvenir from Spain deserves a place in your suitcase.Let's be honest. We've all seen the flamenco dolls with plastic smiles, the tiny black bulls, and the endless rows of magnets waiting in airport shops. They're part of the experience, and they often bring a smile years later. But Spain has so much more to take home than the usual tourist classics. In this week's episode of Spanish Loops, we're talking about the souvenirs that truly capture the spirit of Spain. The ones that tell a story long after your journey is over.Spanish food is one of the greatest gifts you can bring back. A carefully selected Manchego or Cabrales cheese, properly vacuum sealed, can transport you right back to that village market or family-owned delicatessen where you first tasted it. A box of traditional turrón, Spain's famous almond nougat enjoyed for centuries, makes every holiday season a little sweeter. Then there are the wines. From Rioja and Ribera del Duero to lesser-known regions producing exceptional bottles, Spain offers remarkable quality without the extravagant prices found elsewhere. For those looking for something timeless, Lladró porcelain figures remain an icon of Spanish craftsmanship. While they may not be as fashionable as they were decades ago, their elegance, artistry, and attention to detail continue to make them treasured collectibles around the world. The best souvenirs aren't always the most expensive or the easiest to find. They're the ones that remind you of a conversation with a local shop owner, a hidden market, or a quiet afternoon discovering a corner of Spain that wasn't on any itinerary.Travel isn't measured by what you pack. It's measured by the memories you carry home. Sometimes, those memories happen to fit perfectly inside a suitcase.Join us this week on Spanish Loops as we explore the souvenirs worth bringing home from Spain and why the best keepsakes are often the ones with the richest stories behind them.Subscribe and share. This summer has been anything but quiet for infectious diseases. In this episode of Contagion Podcast, hosts Drs. Vivian Vega and Jackie Sherbuk take listeners on a fast-paced tour through the outbreaks, emerging threats, and public health stories that have dominated conversations among infectious disease specialists—and increasingly, the general public. The episode begins with the nationwide Cyclospora outbreak, examining why this foodborne parasite has become one of the summer's biggest public health stories. The hosts explain how contaminated produce, long incubation periods, and complex food distribution networks make outbreak investigations particularly challenging, while providing practical advice on diagnosis, treatment, and prevention.Next, they explore the remarkable Andes hantavirus outbreak linked to an expedition cruise in Patagonia. This unusual event highlights the only hantavirus known to spread from person to person and serves as a fascinating case study in how ecotourism, international travel, and delayed symptom onset can complicate outbreak investigations across multiple countries. The conversation then shifts to one of the most extraordinary success stories in public health: the battle against the New World screwworm. Listeners will discover how millions of sterile flies have been used to eradicate one of history's most destructive livestock pests—and why climate change, wildlife movement, and border challenges now threaten decades of success. The hosts also review the ongoing Legionnaires' disease outbreak in New York City, discussing how modern environmental surveillance, rapid public health response, and laboratory testing work together to control urban outbreaks before they expand further.Attention then turns to the rapidly expanding Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, where the rare Bundibugyo strain presents new challenges because currently available vaccines and therapies are not proven to work against it. The discussion highlights the importance of surveillance, contact tracing, community trust, and ongoing clinical trials in outbreak response. Finally, the episode examines how public health agencies prepared for infectious disease threats during the 2026 FIFA World Cup, from measles and respiratory viruses to wastewater surveillance, social media monitoring, and behind-the-scenes coordination that helps keep millions of travelers safe.Blending humor, clinical insight, and real-world epidemiology, this episode offers an engaging look at the infectious disease stories shaping the summer of 2026. Whether you're a healthcare professional, student, or simply curious about emerging health threats, you'll gain a deeper appreciation for the science, surveillance, and public health efforts that work quietly behind the scenes to protect us all.Dr. Vega would like to thank her friend Job Meiller for his musical contributions, "Hotel California," and "Can't Get You Out of My Mind," to our segment breaks. Thank you, Job!Thanks also to Dr. Ana Velez, our artistic contributor, for her artwork utilized in our episode thumbnail, "The Mouse Who Never Meant to Harm."

Misha Glenny and guests discuss the French portrait painter Élisabeth Vigée Le Brun (1755 - 1842). From her teens she delighted her high society subjects in and around Paris, notably Marie Antoinette who she painted around 30 times, and she invariably found ways to show her sitters at their best. Some critics were affronted that she, a young woman, dared paint at all and, when they saw how good her portraits were, some spread a rumour that surely this could not really be her work and she must have had a secret male lover finishing her portraits in a studio. The French Revolution forced Vigée Le Brun out of France and so she set off from one European court to another to find more success from Naples to Vienna to St Petersburg and to London, eventually settling back in France. Today her works are on show in major galleries around the world.WithRosalind Polly Blakesley Master of Pembroke College and Professor of Russian and European Art at the University of CambridgeRobert Wenley Deputy Director of Collections and Research at the Barber Institute of Fine Arts, University of BirminghamAnd Francesca Whitlum-Cooper Curator of Later Italian, Spanish and French Paintings at The National Gallery, London.Producer: Simon TillotsonReading list:Joseph Baillio, Katharine Baetjer and Paul Lang (eds), Vigée Le Brun (exhibition catalogue in English, Metropolitan Museum of Art, 2016)Joseph Baillio et al., Elisabeth Louise Vigée Le Brun: 1755-1842 (exhibition catalogue in French, Grand Palais, Paris, 2015/16)Rosalind P. Isabelle partage aujourd'hui sa vie entre Porquerolles et Paris.
