Mit dem Zug geht es dann ins weiße Winter-Wonderland in den Norden, nach Rovaniemi. Die selbsternannte Weihnachtsmannstadt boomt bei Fans des Polarlichts und der Husky-Touren. Und wer die Möglichkeiten der nordischen Kälte vollumfänglich ausschöpfen will, gönnt sich eine Nacht in dem Hotel, das im Frühjahr zurück in den See fließt. Hier am Polarkreis bringt der Tourismus aber auch Kurioses mit sich. So erlebt Rovaniemi eine wahre Winterkleidungsflut, weil die dicke Jacke auf dem Weg zurück oft nicht mehr in den Koffer voller Souvenirs passt. Aber was wäre ein Touristenmagnet ohne findige Geschäftsleute? Und so findet sich auch im Winter-Idyll zwischen Wanderungen auf vereisten Flüssen und nur mit Feuer beheizten Wildnishütten so manches Beispiel für klassisch nordischen Pragmatismus - und viel Stoff fürs Reisetagebuch.

Jean est garçon de café au Balzar, une brasserie typique du quartier latin. On est en 1995 et pas mal de choses ont changé depuis qu'il a commencé dans le métier : la tenue, la clientèle, mais aussi les conditions de travail. Tôt levé, j'ai pris le métro pour me rendre d'Arcueil-Cachan à Saint-Philippe-du-Roule, lieu parisien de toutes les promesses de carrière, de promotion, d'ambition ; car là, non loin de la station de métro, se tient le siège cossu de la Compagnie du Niger français qui m'a embauché… » Heureusement pour l'Histoire, l'expérience sera de courte durée. 70 ans plus tard, celui qui avait vingt-deux ans à l'époque, nous invite à la découverte d'un monde disparu mais qui nous parle encore. Les années de l'après-guerre, celles qui précèdent les « Trente Glorieuse ». Des années où les taudis abondent, où l'eau courante et l'électricité ne sont pas encore arrivées dans tous les foyers, la voiture individuelle est un luxe, les paysans représentent le tiers de la population active, la plupart des enfants suivent la carrière de leurs parents, l'enseignement supérieur est quasi fermé aux classes inférieures, la femme mariée doit encore avoir l'autorisation de son mari pour ouvrir un compte en banque, la pilule contraceptive n'est pas encore légale, l'avortement est interdit. C'est une époque où le collectif prime sur le particulier, on s'affirme par son appartenance religieuse, politique, régionale, professionnelle. La grande idée de la construction européenne peine à se réaliser. Qu'y a-t-il de commun entre ce monde d'hier et celui d'aujourd'hui qui semble, lui aussi, à l'aube d'un basculement ? C'est ce que nous allons tenter de comprendre avec notre témoin : Michel Winock. On January 5, 1895, Captain Alfred Dreyfus's cries of innocence were drowned out by a mob shouting “Death to Judas!” In Alfred Dreyfus: The Man at the Center of the Affair (Yale UP, 2024), Maurice Samuels gives readers new insight into Dreyfus himself—the man at the center of the affair. He tells the story of Dreyfus's early life in Paris, his promising career as a French officer, the false accusation leading to his imprisonment on Devil's Island, the fight to prove his innocence that divided the French nation, and his life of quiet obscurity after World War I.Samuels's striking perspective is enriched by a newly available archive of more than three thousand documents and objects donated by the Dreyfus family. Unlike many historians, Samuels argues that Dreyfus was not an “assimilated” Jew.
