Which of your festive traditions are just plain 'tacky'? Emily Vernem has a list, and you're probably on it. Holly Wainwright and Jessie Stephens certainly are. This is the last 'normal programming' show for 2025, and we're leaning into comfort and joy. We're bringing all our predictions for 2026 including the fate of some celebrity relationships, the details of the most famous woman in the world's wedding dress, and whether or not it will be the Year Of The Unusual Face. We also revisit what we said would happen in 2025. Some of us were more right than others. Plus, the letter you should absolutely write yourself before the year is out, and recommendations. Also: Here is the essay, by Maggie Alderson, that inspired our 'letter' chat: https://www.mamamia.com.au/december-letter-to-self/ Support independent women's media Recommendations Em recommends Heated Rivalry for all your steamy, hockey playing TV needs. Jessie recommends Anatomy of a Cancellation on ABC. Holly recommends the Beth's Dead podcast. Today we are celebrating the man who made so many of our favourite ever movies. We’ll explain how he shaped the romantic comedy genre - and reveal the one scene he regretted filming.Plus, is this year's Goop Gift Guide the recession indicator no one saw coming? Gwyneth Paltrow’s latest gift guide features an "Under $100" section for us "normies," and frankly, we’re terrified. We break down the strange pivot to affordability and find the few remaining items (like a $500 bathroom accessory) that prove she’s still out of touch. Phew. And we’re digging into a strange new trend of male actors setting boundaries around intimacy scenes. With George Clooney and allegedly Callum Turner both opting out of on-screen romance, we’re asking: are we entering a new, unsexy era of cinema? THE END BITSLove binge-watching TV? There are names we will never forget from the Bondi attacks. On today's show, Jessie, Holly and Amelia want to honour just a few of the many heroes who risked — and in some cases lost — their lives trying to save others in the worst terror attack ever to happen on Australia's soil. And we want to tell you a little bit about what it feels like in Sydney, and at Bondi at the moment. Not everyone is able to turn their attention elsewhere this week, but for those who can and want to, we're having some other conversations, too. Like, Taylor Swift, Timothee Chalamet and the era of being able to say, "Yeah, I'm pretty good at this" without cringe. And, the power of gathering. Being together has never felt more urgent, but at whose house, and who's bringing the cake? Even if you hate hosting, it's hard to avoid at this time of year and you know what makes it better? Good guests. We tell you how to be one, and Amelia shares a thank-you note rule that impressed us all. John Killick is one of Australia's most infamous criminals. Why? Because in 1999, he escaped from Sydney’s Silverwater Correctional Complex on a helicopter. Killick was on remand for armed robbery, and his girlfriend at the time, Lucy Dudko, hijacked a helicopter, landed it in the prison, and flew him out. In this episode, we speak with John Killick himself about his life of crimes, his days of reform now and that fateful day when he was broken out of prison on a helicopter. We've all been there: you walk into a vintage store, feel instantly overwhelmed by the "dress uppy" costumes and confusing eras, and leave with nothing. This week, Leigh is talking to vintage expert Tara Rowe, owner of the viral vintage wedding dress store Call Me The Breeze, about how to actually succeed at secondhand shopping. Tara explains why the secret isn't thrifting (which involves rummaging), but finding curated resellers who act as your personal "conduit" for the good stuff. She shares her tips for finding sellers who match your niche, why 90s fashion is the most in-demand era, and why there’s nothing cooler than saying "Oh, this? It's vintage." The time has come. The first season of Ryan Murphy’s legal drama Alls Fair has come to an end and we desperately need to talk about it.For better or worse (and a lot of people will say worse) this has been one of the most talked about shows of the year, after dismal viewers and then record breaking audience numbers. So now we need to honestly critique Kim Kardashian’s acting performance in her first lead role and dissect the scenes in this over the top drama that had us both screaming and laughing (and not always for the right reasons). From the glorious fashion, to the significance of the guest stars and the award winning actresses who actually came through, here’s everything we can finally say about Alls Fair. In this episode of Well, Claire and Dr Mariam sit down with writer, speaker, visibility activist and influencer Carly Findlay to talk about her inflammatory skin condition, Ichthyosis. For years, we've watched her deal with the pain and frustration through the low moments and quite a few lovely highs too - always with a fabulous outfit. Through it all, she has been educating, entertaining and allowing us into her space so that we might learn how to help those around us with visible conditions. From the exhaustion of constantly educating strangers to the sheer joy of reclaiming her narrative through fashion, Carly has reminded us of the great lesson that we don’t have to hide away just to make others feel comfortable! In this candid conversation, Carly discusses the intersection of rare disease and the medical system, navigating a cancer diagnosis while managing a complex skin condition, and why - even when experiencing chronic pain or a scary diagnosis - we all deserve to feel f*cking fabulous. It's not a usual show today, because it's not a usual day. At sunset on Sunday, at Australia's most famous beach, Australia experienced the worst act of terrorism ever to take place on our soil. As the local Jewish community celebrated the beginning of Chanukah, families gathered around food, face-painting and even a petting zoo for an 'everyone is welcome' opening to the Festival Of Lights. And two men opened fire. Some Outlouders will be directly affected by what happened on Sunday. Others will be far removed but asking how this could happen here in Australia, and what they can do to help. Some will just want to talk it over. Inside Mamamia, we spent weeks debating whether this interview should happen at all. Every woman on the team had strong feelings about Bonnie Blue. We talked, argued, researched, and questioned whether giving her any space was responsible. We knew our audience would feel the same tension we did. So why did we do it? Because Bonnie Blue asked us for this interview. She reached out to No Filter, specifically and we needed to understand why. In the lead-up, we watched every interview she has done. Most were either sensationalist, openly hostile, or enthusiastically cheering her on. None of them asked what we genuinely needed answered: Does she understand the implications of what she does? Does she understand the misogynistic language she uses about women? Why does her behaviour evoke such visceral anger in women? And crucially — does she care? What we learnt, very quickly, is that behind the shock value and headlines is a deeply strategic marketing machine — one built on outrage, provocation and attention. Bonnie Blue told us plainly: she rage-baits on purpose. She knows that women’s fury spreads faster than anything else online, and she has learnt how to leverage that to build her name and her business. This episode is not designed to rehabilitate her image, and it certainly isn’t designed to promote her.It is designed for one purpose only: to understand what she’s doing, why she’s doing it, and what it means for the rest of us. This is a conversation that unsettled us, challenged us, and left us with more questions than answers. But it is an important one — because it sits at the crossroads of sex, power, misogyny, internet fame, and the culture that rewards outrage above everything else. This episode is a gift to your face! It's the grand finale, the last Q&A of the year is officially HERE! We're unleashing the essential, non-negotiable party hacks you need to conquer the holidays including a detailed eyelash curler masterclass where Leigh passionately defends the tool (even admitting she'd take it to Survivor!), and reveals her three-step technique for a perfect, breakage-free curl and naming the heroes worth your cash. They can't hurt, but can they help? And finally, Kelly & Leigh drop some top-tier festive tips, including how to use boob tape for that perfect lift in any plunge dress and a genius hack using eyeshadow primer to stop face sweat—because we schvitz! When do ‘preventative’ injections cross the line and start making you look older? Can wearing a bra to bed really prevent sagging? And do you need to see a gynaecologist if you've never had sex? In this episode, we speak to Consultant Dermatologist and Specialist Cosmetic Injector, Dr Cara McDonald to get the truth about anti-ageing, skincare ingredients and cosmetic procedures. She gives her expert rating (out of 10) for the most popular skincare ingredients - from your hyaluronic acids to your retinoids - and if they’re really that great in the fight against ageing. We cover everything from why the operator is more important than the device, the dangers of over-filling and when removing all movement from your face can actually backfire… Dr Mariam breaks down the serious risks of ‘cosmetic tourism’, the differences between a ‘Plastic Surgeon’ and ‘cosmetic surgeon’ and how to identify a properly credentialed practitioner. Plus, we settle the "to bra in bed or not to bra in bed" debate, and whether it has any proven impact on sagging. And, in our quick consult, Dr Mariam answers a listener’s question about whether you still need to see that doctor if you've never done the deed. “The goal isn't to be sober, the goal is to love yourself so much you don't need to drink," Sarah Rusbatch says. Sarah is author of the bestselling book Beyond Booze, How to Create a Life You Love Alcohol Free, a multi-award-winning Health and Wellbeing Coach, an accredited Grey Area Drinking Coach, a menopause coach and a keynote speaker sharing her journey to sobriety and impact of alcohol on mental health to global audiences. Sarah works tirelessly to support women all over the world to create and live their best lives as they age.Sarah is originally from the UK and is now based in Western Australia. She has supported thousands of individuals (mostly women) to change their relationship with alcohol and, consequently, change their lives. Grey Area Drinking describes the place between "every now and again" drinking, and "rock bottom dependent" drinking. This type of drinking in women has increased over 80% in the last 30 years. After an article she wrote for Mamamia (you can read it HERE), 8,000 women reached out to her within 24 hours for help with their drinking. In this episode we discuss:--Why Alcohol Use Disorder in Women has increased more than 80% in the last 30 years--Why ageing impacts a woman's ability to metabolise alcohol and impact menopause symptoms, yet middle-aged women are drinking the most--The specific health risks to women of drinking at such a significant level--The normalization of everyday drinking--What needs to change in culture and society in order to change drinking patterns--What it takes to create a life you love without alcohol (the heart of her book)--Dispelling the myths that a life without alcohol is boring; and explaining what actually opens up for us when we take a break from alcohol--The peer pressure many people experience when cutting down or removing alcohol and how to handle this--The benefits the thousands of women she has coached have experienced when they removed alcohol."You have full permission to outgrow alcohol," Sarah shares.Learn more and follow Sarah:www.sarahrusbatch.comInstagram - @sarahrusbatch
Is the ultimate parenting flex actually… no gifts at all? Because according to The Cut, Millennial parents now fall into two dramatic camps:Camp Maximalist: “Here’s every toy that's ever been produced.”Camp Minimalist: “Your present is… presence.” Meanwhile, gentle parenting has officially been cancelled. After a viral post dragged the whole “boundary-less vibes only” approach, we’re gathered here today to mount a defence before it’s declared emotionally supportive manslaughter. And in other critical news, the internet is deep into an investigation of the gossip going on about the Millennial mum group — Ashley Tisdale, Mandy Moore, and Hilary Duff — basically the Avengers of wholesome parenting. What are they hiding? PTA secrets? Matching snack schedules? We will, of course, be looking into it with the seriousness it deserves… which is none. Our Recommendations:
We have a list of movies that could genuinely change your life before the new year — but fair warning, Laura and Em interpreted this brief very differently, so buckle up for emotional whiplash. From picks of pure whimsy to surprisingly sharp lessons about figuring out what you actually want in life... this list has something for everyone. One even prompts the girls to dive into the panic and poetry of hitting a certain milestone age, sending both hosts spiralling (in a cute way) about nostalgia, pressure and reflecting on how far they've come. And of course… a few rogue curveballs no one asked for but somehow make perfect sense. It’s chaotic, heartfelt, and might just give you the exact movie you need to watch before the clock hits midnight.THE END BITS Our podcast Watch Party is out now, listen on Apple or Spotify. Performers are totally over it, and their end-of-year burnout is highly relatable content. But also, are we, the crowds, worse than we've ever been? This week a 90s rock legend ripped into a concert-goer at a Melbourne show and we want to know — do any of us know how to behave any more? And, in what seems like very unsurprising news, adult content creator Bonnie Blue has been arrested in Bali. But why did she take her 'bang bus' there in the first place? Plus, scams. Amelia has a scam story that will make your hair stand on end, Holly says fears of being ripped-off make holiday shopping harder than battling traffic at the carpark and Jessie wonders what living in an era of mass distrust is doing to us all. Also, Pammy and Liam, Katy and Justin, Kylie and Timmmeeee — we're bringing you the celebrity romance and fauxmance updates not one of us asked for. Oh, and bananas. On March 17, 2015, 17-year-old Masa Vukotic left her Doncaster home for an evening walk through her local park, a routine she had followed countless times. That night, her boyfriend, Timothy Draper, did not receive a goodnight text from Masa. By morning, police were at his door with devastating news: Masa had been brutally stabbed 49 times in Koonung Creek Linear Reserve, her screams having been heard by neighbours who called emergency services. The man responsible, Sean Price—a previous offender out on bail—would go on to continue a spree of violence before eventually surrendering to police. Lucinda washes her denim how much? And are skinny jeans really back? This week, Chelsea and Lucinda are having the great denim debate. Lucinda argues they're chic (when balanced with an oversized shirt), while Chelsea thinks they're a "worst nightmare" for anyone who likes to be comfortable. Fans are convinced the Jonas Brothers are on a one-way ticket to broke-ville after the trailer for the revival of Camp Rock dropped this week. But the boys are pushing back - so we’re digging into whether or not we think they’re revisiting the old project out of passion or a serious need for some cash. And the battle lines have been drawn between Netflix and Paramount… both vying to acquire Warner Bros Discovery, in a major merger that could reshape the entire industry as Hollywood braces for another wave of consolidation. So what will this mean for both creators and consumers?Plus, Netflix has released The Reckoning, a new four-part documentary about Sean “P Diddy” Combs, featuring serious new allegations, juror insights from his recent trial, and 50 Cent’s very personal involvement behind the scenes — plus the ongoing fallout as more accusations resurface and the industry reacts in real time.If you or anyone you know needs to speak with an expert, please contact 1800 RESPECT (1800 737 732) — the National Sexual Assault, domestic and Family Violence Counselling Service.THE END BITS Our podcast Watch Party is out now, listen on Apple or Spotify. Does having darker skin really protect you from skin cancer? Can you imagine getting a Pap smear every single day for 21 years just to help your husband’s research? And, what do you do if your vagina involuntarily “clenches” during sex. In this episode, we speak to Professor Georgina Long, Medical Director of Melanoma Institute Australia (MIA) and 2024 Australian of the Year, to decode Australia’s complicated relationship with the sun. We talk about the "ABCDE" rule for checking your moles, whether darker skin tones are at less risk of melanoma and why you should be taking photos of your skin spots.Plus, in Med School, Claire and Dr Mariam pay tribute to the unsung heroines of medical history - from the wife of Dr. Papanicolaou (who underwent daily pap smears for 21 years ) to Anarcha Westcott, the enslaved woman known as the 'mother of modern gynecology', who endured 30 experimental surgeries without anaesthesia. And, in our Quick Consult, Dr Mariam helps a listener named Sarah who is struggling with Vaginismus. We break down exactly what this condition is, why it is a physical reflex rather than "just in your head" and the multidisciplinary team you need to help reclaim your sex life.THE END BITS All your health information is in the Well Hub. Travis Kelce and Taylor Swift never fight. Nor do George and Amal Clooney. Not about work, money, cleaning, travel or whose turn it is to feed the dog (sorry, cats.) An aspirational relationship goal? Or a flashing red flag? Also, this week the whole world is looking at Australia as our world-first social media delay kicks in on Wednesday, December 10. So, what are we to make of the poll that says only a third of Aussie parents are actually going to enforce the ban that experts are calling "a mothers' revolution"? Plus, Oprah Winfrey is in Australia and drawing huge crowds with her trademark a-ha moments. So why is Oprah still so interesting to Aussie women in 2025? And, there's a very relevant Word of The Year, and a very intimidating Colour Of The Year, and Amelia, Jessie and Holly have a theory that they're linked.
