On this episode of Destination on the Left, I talk with Arturo Gaona, Chief Partnership Officer at Wheel the World. Arturo shares how Wheel the World started with one vision in mind and evolved into a solution for helping visitors of all abilities know what to expect when planning their travels. He shares how Wheel the World collaborates with DMOs to map accessibility features and provide accurate, reliable accessibility information for travelers. What You Will Learn in This Episode: Why Wheel the World was founded and how a crowdfunding trip to Patagonia inspired the start of the company What the Accessibility Mapping System (AMS) is and how it helps both DMOs and travelers Specific challenges travelers with disabilities face and how Wheel the World's solutions aim to address these issues How the Destination Verified program helps destinations attract more diverse visitors by making accessibility information more transparent and accessible What proactive steps DMOs can take to improve how they share information about accessibility From Personal Experience to Global Impact Arturo shares how Wheel the World was born in 2016, when a trip planned with friends, including a wheelchair user, to Torres del Paine in Patagonia exposed the glaring gaps in accessible travel information. The group's determination led to creating a hiking wheelchair and a crowdfunded expedition, which went viral, catapulting the concept of accessible travel into the spotlight. The overwhelming internet response to their self-filmed documentary inspired Arturo and his friends to found Wheel the World in 2017. How DMOs Can Create Accessible Destinations The collaboration with Visit Mesa, a trailblazer in destination accessibility, was Wheel the World's foray into working with DMOs. Arturo explains how their method helps destination marketers take steps to share their accessible locations with potential visitors: 1. Accessibility Information Provide accurate and comprehensive accessibility information. Arturo explains that many destinations lack a centralized repository of accessibility data. By mapping the accessibility of over 90 destinations with its Accessibility Mapping System (AMS) app, Wheel the World can provide travelers with the information they need to plan their trips. 2. Booking Solutions Once accessibility data is collected, the next step is ensuring that travelers can easily book accommodations and services that meet their unique needs. Wheel the World offers a user-friendly platform where accessible travel options are readily bookable, bridging the gap between information and action. 3. Training Another barrier to accessible travel is hospitality professionals' lack of knowledge and awareness of interacting with people with disabilities. Wheel the World's Academy provides training that gives industry professionals the skills they need to provide excellent service, break down invisible barriers, and embed inclusivity. Arturo also discusses how marketers can present the destination in a way that resonates with travelers with disabilities, ensuring they feel welcomed and included. Arturo emphasizes that DMOs can start by taking small, actionable steps toward inclusivity. The key starting point is to find out a destination's accessibility information online and then work on continuously improving accessibility. The mission of the non-profit Open Doors Organization is to make goods and services accessible to people with disabilities in travel, tourism and transportation. Their goal is to teach businesses how to succeed in the disability market, while simultaneously empowering the disability community. Americans love to travel. Americans spend billions of dollars on leisure travel each year according to the U.S. Travel Association. This travel supports millions of jobs and trillions of dollars in economic impact when we include food services, lodging, transportation, recreation, amusement, and retail sales. Looking at the disability travel market, Open Doors Organization reported 25.6 million people with disabilities traveled for pleasure or business while spending over 50 billion dollars. In this program we will talk about two laws that affect people with disabilities when they travel. Title III of the ADA prohibits discrimination against people with disabilities in places of public accommodation including, hotels, restaurants, airports, bus stations and more. The second law is the Air Carrier Access Act (ACAA), which makes it illegal for airlines to discriminate against passengers because of their disability. However, people with disabilities sometimes file lawsuits or complaints because they believe their rights were violated or they had a poor travel experience.

A full-time wheelchair user since 2019, she has used her own travel experiences (and those of her husband and three children, who also live with disabilities) to dig deeper into the world of accessible travel. Now known as an expert in this niche, Durso has made it her goal to educate other travel advisors and inspire and advocate for travelers from every walk of life. In this episode of Humans of Travel, listeners will hear about Durso's own journey as the wife of a military veteran and mother to three children living with disabilities; her path toward becoming Miss Wheelchair Texas in 2022; and her views on the accessible travel landscape (including what the industry does right, and what it does very, very wrong). Listeners will also hear about Durso's sales process, including the questions she asks clients with accessibility needs, the conversations she has with supplier partners, and the changes she makes to her trip-planning process depending on the type of disability a client has (mobility, cognitive, hearing- or vision-related limitations and more). She also gives advice to other travel advisors who are interested in marketing to clients within the disability community (which encompasses one-fourth of U.S. adults), and the importance of using person-first language and inclusive marketing materials and tactics for reaching this group. Well, until the pandemic came. Despite the pandemic blip, Wicked Travel Concierage is looking to hit $1M in sales for 2023! Coming from a “neuro spicy” family, Amy came into travel wanting to help other families like hers that felt like anxiety, ADHD, autism, etc. were roadblocks to visiting Disney. She's a firm believer that if there's a reason you think travel is inaccessible to you, let's have a conversation about it and see what we can do. Then she works her magic. In the last 5 years, Amy's expertise and passion for accessible travel has grown beyond neurodiverse clientele and Amy openly shares her favorite accessibility resources as well as how she opens up the conversation with clients about any travelers with special needs. Whether it being plus sized, grandpa traveling with a colostomy bag, or anything else, Amy shines light on the different ways advisors can help all their clients be a part of and enjoy the vacation. Amy also shows us her email automation workflows for her clients—which she sets up for each destination and sometimes vendor—allowing her to spend more time getting to know her clients and providing that human touch. Everyone is welcome on this ride to learn about how a Disney-loving advisor opened up her agency to new destinations like Europe that many advisors think of as traditionally less accessible than cruises or US-based destinations and is reaping the benefits!

Kristy Durso, owner of Incredible Memories Travel, is a passionate advocate that everyone should be able to travel, regardless of an individual's unique disability. Although a car accident left him paralyzed, Alvaro Silberstein refused to let that stop him from traveling with his friends. But he soon realized that while he successfully hiked the peaks in Patagonia, for most people who live with disabilities, adventure accessibility is not a possibility. That's why he founded Wheel the World, an online marketplace for people with disabilities and seniors to book accessible trips. In this week's episode of FOMO Sapiens, Alvaro talks about how he convinced the skeptics that his business could work and raised venture capital to scale. He also unpacks the opportunities and challenges that he sees as a Latin American entrepreneur who targets a global audience with much of his team in South America. Learn more about your ad choices.
