Welcome Jhoana Monroy (@jhoanajojo) from Portland, Oregon to the @immigrationmicpodcast! In this interview we talk about: Johana’s work resisting, challenging, and dismantling “oppressive systems” through creative avenues. Her relationship with her parents and coming to the U.S to live the “American Dream”, and not recognizing her father as a young girl at times. Attending a school that specialized in dual language programs, the social worker whose generosity inspired Johana’s current work in mentoring. How moving to a “white” community with different educational systems led to bad influences, and how going to an alternative school, becoming a young mom, and her brother’s deportation led her to her current path. Joining Momentum Alliance (@getyourmomentum) and later on being recruited/ inspired by someone who was “undocumented, unafraid, and unapologetic”, (Johana was denied through the citizenship process through her spouse). Leading efforts in creating a gala fundraiser for undocumented students at the institution she was attending, which led to the creation for a center, and now has an endowment that awards full ride scholarships. The 2016 elections “my heart still drops still thinking about it, I still get nervous” - “I don’t even know how I survived that day’. Her ambitions to run for a position, finish her master’s degree, serving her community, --- and words of inspiration: “be resistant, activate others, step outside your comfort zone”. And much more! Bonus: Sample of an NYC panel discussion for HBO's "Make Love Great Again" with Director Aaron Agrasanchez and Hommy Diaz that I attended!

We all know the unknown and uncertainty of forging ahead on your own creative path can be terrifying! So how can we overcome all the fears and move forward? On this week’s episode of Creativity School, I’m talking to Hommy Diaz. Hommy is an influential designer in sneaker culture with over 15 years of experience working with with top brands like KSWISS, Palladium Boots and DC Shoes. He is also the cofounder of MAGNUS ALPHA, his own designer sneaker, accessories and apparel company. Hommy is a proud child of immigrants from the Dominican Republic and his family told him he couldn’t make money being an artist. Despite this, he went to Parsons art school, graduated, and then took a part time job at the Apple Store, much to the confusion and disappointment of his family. Somehow, Hommy leveraged that experience to end up as the global product line manager at DC Shoes... with zero shoe design experience! We talk about how he navigated this journey, his particular way of thinking that allows him to stay open to possibilities without trying to control the outcome of the unknown, and how this has consistently opened doors for him on his creative path. Stay tuned for Part 2 with Hommy next week, where we talk about how to create work that's meaningful to consumers and more.   **Today’s episode is brought to you by Audible! If you want to get started with a free audiobook download and 30 day free trial head over to at www.creativityschoolpodcast.com/audible.     Mentioned in this episode: Being open to opportunity even if it’s not exactly what you expect Why its so important to create your own opportunities Why Hommy says setting expectations is self sabotage How to release the impulse to control things and enjoy the process Why Hommy says to rack up as many small failures as possible   CONNECT WITH HOMMY: Website | Instagram   CONNECT WITH CREATIVITY SCHOOL: Thank you so much for listening! “Take every negative, and outweigh it with a positive.” Born and raised in Queens, NY, Hommy grew up quickly, with a savviness that could only be learned from the streets. His parents immigrated from the Dominican Republic, and while Hommy was learning English by reading TV Guides, and immersed in the rich culture of his family, he also was exposed to the deep poverty of the country, making him truly grateful for all that he had. At an early age, Hommy started drawing, and began tapping into his creativity. But it wasn’t until he discovered the art of skateboarding, that his creativity would begin to blossom. From the graphics on the board, to the tricks, style, and fashion, Hommy’s identity was quickly being shaped, and so was his network. When it was time for college, Hommy decided to double down on the world of art, pursuing art school, and crafting his dream. This would soon become one of the most challenging, yet fulfilling times of Hommy’s life. He was the underdog, and no matter how many times he fell, he rose up again, learning that “art is about the learning experience, challenging yourself, and how you progress.” As he set off into the world, the young artist from Queens would soon embark on a journey that takes him from Apple to DC, and K-Swiss, while being guided by his imagination, influenced by skateboarding, and bonded by the power of networking, to become one of the most sought out and respected designers of the culture.
