Gentlemen, welcome to the fourth and final episode of this month's series with my wife Jessica, and I want to start by saying thank you for showing up for this one, since August actually had five Fridays this year, which means she recorded a full bonus episode she didn't have to do. Today we're tackling something that trips up more marriages than almost anything else: roles and expectations, and specifically, all the unspoken assumptions about who does what that quietly cause resentment when they're never actually talked about. Jessica and I get into the finances first, how I took over bill paying for our first five years of marriage and, driven by my own anxiety around debt, paid things down so aggressively it actually put us in a bind more than once. We talk through why swapping our roles, me handling investing and her handling the day to day bills, ended up being the right fit for both of us, and why neither of us wants to trade back. From there we get into dinner, probably the single area that's caused us the most quiet frustration over the years, from Jessica's years of resentment doing all the cooking to the practical shift we finally made once we actually talked about it out loud instead of just enduring it. We also open up about how we split the harder parenting conversations, why the sex talk with our boys has always fallen to me, and why Jessica has become the one I lean on for basically every other hard conversation in our house. I share what I've learned watching her approach conflict, calm, strategic, and incredibly well timed, compared to my own instinct to just react in the moment. We close out by talking through how we split up kids' sports and activities, and what boundaries actually held up over 22 years of marriage. If your marriage has ever hit friction over who's supposed to be doing what, and you've never actually sat down and talked about it, this conversation is a real look at how two people figured that out over two decades together, including the parts that took way too long to fix.   Timeline Summary [1:02] Introducing the fourth and final episode of the August series with Jessica [12:56] Reflecting on last week's lower-energy episode and setting up today's topic: roles and expectations [14:12] Larry announces Roommates to Soulmates cohort three, starting September 16th [16:33] Why unspoken and unknown expectations are what actually trip couples up the most [19:00] The early years of bill paying: Larry's aggressive debt payoff and the strain it caused [21:52] Why paying bills stressed Larry out so deeply, no matter how much money was in the bank [24:36] Checking in on whether Jessica still feels good about handling the bills 17 years later [25:39] Introducing the second financial role: why Larry handles all the investing [27:05] Larry's own journey from investing overwhelm to genuinely loving it today [30:45] Confirming neither of them wants to trade financial roles, and why that alignment matters [31:27] Introducing the dinner problem: why family meals can become a major source of strife [32:52] The moment, about a year ago, Jessica finally said out loud that she hated cooking [33:32] The fix: splitting cooking nights and having the non-cooking spouse handle cleanup [37:55] Larry announces the first-ever Dad Edge Day with the Arizona Cardinals, November 15th [42:22] Checking in on what Jessica would still change about how dinner works today [43:24] Jessica's regret: never requiring the kids to eat what was served instead of making separate meals [46:34] Why the sex talk role has always fallen to Larry, and how he approaches it with their boys [52:36] Breaking down Jessica's calm, strategic approach to conflict versus Larry's reactive instinct [57:14] A callback to an earlier, lighter moment in the series about Larry's past drinking [1:00:49] How they split kids' sports and activities, and the assumptions each of them still carries [1:03:22] What comes next: Jessica joining monthly, and how to submit topic ideas [1:04:51] Introducing two free resources: 25 Intimate Conversation Starters and 21 Days to an Extraordinary Marriage   Five Key Takeaways Roles that feel natural today were often built through real trial and error, not instinct. Larry and Jessica swapped financial responsibilities after outside mentors pointed out they'd assigned them backward, and it took years to get right. Resentment builds fastest around unspoken expectations. Nearly every friction point in their marriage, from bills to dinner, traces back to one person assuming a role the other person quietly grew to dread. Sometimes the fix is simple once you finally say the hard thing out loud. Jessica's years of resentment around cooking dissolved almost immediately once she told Larry directly that she hated it, leading to a workable rotation within one conversation. Timing matters as much as the message when addressing conflict. Jessica's approach of waiting for a calm moment, rather than confronting an issue in the heat of frustration, consistently produces a better outcome than reacting immediately. Roles don't have to be permanent or symmetrical to work. Twenty-two years in, the goal isn't a perfectly even split of every responsibility, it's each person operating in the role that actually fits them, while staying willing to revisit it when it's not working.   Links & Resources Shownotes for this episode: http://thedadedge.com/1524 Roommates to Soulmates (Larry's 8-week marriage coaching cohort; next cohort starts September 16th, with free preview calls): http://thedadedge.com/soulmates The Dad Edge Day at State Farm Stadium (Arizona Cardinals vs. Los Angeles Rams, November 15): https://thedadedge.com/nfl  Closing Wrapping up this series, what stands out most is that Jessica and I don't have this figured out because we never struggled, we have it figured out because we finally stopped avoiding the hard conversations about who does what and why. Every role we've settled into came from a real conversation, sometimes an overdue one, not from assuming the other person would just handle it or just deal with it forever. If something in your own marriage has quietly been building resentment because nobody's actually said it out loud, let this be the nudge to finally have that conversation. Go out and live legendary.

This week's experiment: a double feature of shark movies that proves the ocean isn't the only place where danger lurks. First up is Sharks N Da Hood, a movie that asks, “What if sharks invaded the streets?” and then seemingly forgot to ask literally any other question during the filmmaking process. What follows may be one of the most spectacularly awful movies ever made: baffling choices, painful dialogue, questionable acting, and a level of chaos that makes you wonder if anyone involved ever stopped to watch what they were creating. Then comes Bad CGI Sharks, which, despite a title that sounds like a warning label, is actually a surprisingly fun little low-budget shark movie. The CGI is exactly as advertised, the premise is ridiculous, and yet the movie understands something that Sharks N Da Hood apparently missed: if you're making a movie about absurd killer sharks, you should probably try to have some fun with it.The guys dive into both ends of the bargain-bin shark movie spectrum. One film is a cinematic shipwreck of nearly historic proportions. The other is goofy, self-aware entertainment that manages to rise above its limitations through sheer enthusiasm and a willingness to embrace the ridiculous.Expect terrible sharks, bad decisions, questionable effects, and one of the strangest double features to ever wash up on Breaking Brad. A top bit of Lillian for an acting legend. We're delighted to host Ray Winstone at Dish for a meal fit for acting royalty. Ray, born and raised in East London, has starred on screens since his breakthrough role in Scum in 1979. Other credits from a storied career include That Summer!, Quadrophenia, Sexy Beast, The Departed and Nil By Mouth, alongside Kathy Burke and Gary Oldman.  Ray has a strong connection to Sicily, and regularly spends time at his Italian retreat, where he lives with a degree of self-sufficiency growing fruit, vegetables, nuts and even making his own olive oil. As we find out, Ray has immersed himself completely into Sicilian culture, and takes time to swap notes with Angela about its benefits and idiosyncrasies. We also hear about Ray's sweet tooth, his love of a rib of beef and slow cooked meats, and the joy of sharing sloppy pig trotters with pals.  Angela serves up a Dover sole with buttery capers & shallots, inspired by this pan-fried plaice recipe, with sides of Jersey Royals and green helga beans. There's also some of Angela's own focaccia to help mop up any delicious buttery juices. The wine flows through the episode, beginning with a bottle of Recchia Amarone della Valpolicella, with M de Minuty Côtes De Provence Rosé the suggested pairing for the meal. Don't forget the salted caramel truffles, too. They come along with the Goody Bag for the ultimate final temptation for Ray.  Ray can be seen as crime boss Bobby Glass in The Gentlemen on Netflix right now, with Season 2 landing on 3 September. The show, directed and produced by Guy Ritchie, features a cast including Theo James, Vinnie Jones, Joely Richardson and former Dish guest, Kaya Scodelario. Actual rabid dogs would be much better behaved than these people. Sammy from the Gentlemen's Guide to Midnite Cinema comes over to our place with a sleazy movie under each arm, as is his wont. This week, we check out Rabid Dogs (1974), directed by Mario Bava and (not a sequel), Like Rabid Dogs (1976), directed by Mario Imperoli. These are two fever dreams of rampant criminality and amorality, of a kind only the Italians of the 1970's could purvey. Hold your nose, we're diving in. We will be announcing a Spoiler Territory section for both films, so if you haven't seen them before you listen, you can nevertheless avoid spoilers for Rabid Dogs by skipping ahead to the 1:45:09 mark, and for Like Rabid Dogs by skipping ahead to 2:39:03. Blood on the Sawdust: The Brutal World of Victorian Boxing Episode Overview In this 9th Anniversary Special, we step out of the West End drawing rooms and into the blood-flecked, sawdust-covered floors of 19th-century “Fancy” public houses. Inspired by the depiction of East End street culture in A Thousand Blows, this episode explores the history of Victorian boxing—from the illegal bare-knuckle bouts of the Regency era to the gentrified, gloved sport codified under the Marquess of Queensberry Rules. We examine how prizefighting evolved from a brutal survival strategy into a national obsession, the legal cat-and-mouse games played across county lines, and the medical and physical toll extracted from the fighters. We also dive into the remarkable life of international combat instructor Colonel Thomas Hoyer Monstery and uncover the overlooked history of 19th-century female prizefighters. Key Topics Covered: Housekeeping & AI Voice Policy: Why the podcast is permanently stepping away from AI-generated voice models in favour of human research, along with updates on replacement recording equipment and audio access. The “Sweet Science” & Prizefighting History: How bare-knuckle fighting functioned as a mix of martial arts, local wrestling, and survival in an era where the body was often a worker’s sole asset. The Structural Cage of the Law: The jurisdictional loopholes that allowed fights to flourish on county borders, and the evolution of legal precedents from R v Billingham (1825) to R v Coney (1882). The Aristocratic “Fancy” & Early Pioneers: The rise of sports journalism via Pierce Egan's Boxiana, and landmark international contests like the 1810 bout between Tom Cribb and former American slave Tom Molineaux. Case Study – The Ruin of Harry Broome: Following the career arc of Harry Broome from his controversial match at Acorn Bridge to his defeat by Tom Paddock and his eventual death in poverty. The Queensberry Transition: Why the introduction of gloves in 1867 was viewed with suspicion by working-class fighters, and how padded gloves inadvertently increased the long-term risk of chronic brain injury. Gentlemen, Self-Defence & Martial Arts: Highlights from Colonel Thomas Hoyer Monstery's C19th treatise Self Defence for Ladies and Gentlemen, including his views on boxing over firearms and his praise for female swordmasters. Women in the Ring: The subversion of Victorian gender norms, focusing on the 1888 world championship bout between Hattie Leslie and Alice Leary, and the legal outrage that followed. This is Guthrie Chamberlain, Your Guide to Wisdom. Day 2919– What About My Neighbor's Neighbor? - Luke 10:25-37 Putnam Church Message – 07/26/2026 The Good News According to Luke: “What About My Neighbor's Neighbor?”   Last week, our message was “Joyful Return, Insightful Response,” in which we learned to rejoice that you belong to Him. Today, we continue with our thirtieth-first message from Luke's narrative of the Good News of Jesus Christ. Today's message is: “What About My Neighbor's Neighbor?” Our core passage today is Luke 10:25-37, on page 1613 of your pew Bibles. The Parable of the Good Samaritan 25 On one occasion an expert in the law stood up to test Jesus. “Teacher,” he asked, “what must I do to inherit eternal life?” 26 “What is written in the Law?” he replied. “How do you read it?” 27 He answered, “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind'[a]; and, ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.'[b]” 28 “You have answered correctly,” Jesus replied. “Do this and you will live.” 29 But he wanted to justify himself, so he asked Jesus, “And who is my neighbor?” 30 In reply Jesus said: “A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, when he was attacked by robbers. They stripped him of his clothes, beat him and went away, leaving him half dead. 31 A priest happened to be going down the same road, and when he saw the man, he passed by on the other side. 32 So too, a Levite, when he came to the place and saw him, passed by on the other side. 33 But a Samaritan, as he traveled, came where the man was; and when he saw him, he took pity on him. 34 He went to him and bandaged his wounds, pouring on oil and wine. Then he put the man on his own donkey, brought him to an inn and took care of him. 35 The next day he took out two denarii[c] and gave them to the innkeeper. ‘Look after him,' he said, ‘and when I return, I will reimburse you for any extra expense you may have.' 36 “Which of these three do you think was a neighbor to the man who fell into the hands of robbers?” 37 The expert in the law replied, “The one who had mercy on him.” Jesus told him, “Go and do likewise.” Opening Prayer Father, we come before You today grateful for Your Word, which searches our hearts and reveals both our need and Your grace. We confess that we often know more truth than we obey. We can quote Scripture, discuss doctrine, and defend our beliefs, yet still pass by hurting people on the other side of the road. Lord Jesus, teach us today what it means to love You with all our heart, soul, strength, and mind, and to love our neighbor as ourselves. Show us where we have drawn lines too tightly, where we have looked for loopholes, and where we have failed to see others with Your compassion. Holy Spirit, open our eyes, soften our hearts, and move us from knowing to doing. In the name of Jesus, amen. Introduction: Back to the Basics In 1959, Vince Lombardi inherited the Green Bay Packers at the lowest point in their history. The previous season, the team had lost ten of their twelve games. They were discouraged, disorganized, and defeated. So Lombardi gathered the team and announced that they were going back to basics. He picked up a football and said, “Gentlemen, this is a football.” From the back of the room, Max McGee, known as a cutup, replied, “Uh, Coach, could you slow down a little? You're going too fast for us.” Lombardi laughed, but the point was serious. The most brilliant playbook in the world will not help a team if the players have forgotten how to block, tackle, pass, catch, and run. Sometimes, spiritually, we need to go back to basics too. By the time Jesus stepped into the public religious life of Israel, many of the most visible religious leaders had turned godliness into a complex system of rules, rituals, and loopholes. They had studied the Law, memorized the Law, debated the Law, and built fences around the Law. But in the process, many had forgotten the heart of the Law. Love God. Love your neighbor. That sounds basic, doesn't it? But as Jesus shows us in Luke 10:25–37, the basics are not always easy. In fact, they are impossible without grace. In the previous message, “Joyful Return, Insightful Response,” the seventy returned from ministry rejoicing that even demons obeyed them in Jesus' name. Jesus corrected their joy, reminding them that their greatest joy was not what they had done for God, but that their names were written in heaven. Now Luke moves us into a conversation with a religious expert who wants to know what he must do to inherit eternal life. This is a very different kind of encounter. The seventy came back rejoicing in grace. / This lawyer comes testing Jesus with a legal question. The seventy had gone out announcing peace. / This man comes looking for a debate. The seventy were learning to serve. / This man is trying to justify himself. And Jesus, as He so often does, takes the conversation deeper than the man expected. / The question begins: “What should I do to inherit eternal life?” But by the end, the real question becomes: “What kind of person sees suffering and moves toward it with mercy?” Or to put it in the title of our message: What About My Neighbor's Neighbor? We will review four truths to understand the answer to this question. Main Point 1: The Wrong Question Reveals the Wrong Heart Luke tells us that an expert in religious law stood up to test Jesus. / That matters. This man is not asking like a hungry soul seeking truth. He is not like the sinful woman who wept at Jesus' feet. He is not like Jairus, desperate for his daughter. He is not like the father whose son was tormented. He is not like the seventy returning with joy. He is testing Jesus. / He asks, “Teacher, what should I do to inherit eternal life?” At first glance, that sounds like a good question. But there is a problem inside it. He asks what he must do to inherit. Those two words do not naturally fit together. You do not usually work to receive an inheritance. An inheritance is given because of relationship. A son or daughter receives what belongs to the family because they belong to the family. This man's question reveals confusion. He is thinking about eternal life as something to be achieved, earned, managed, or secured by religious performance. That was not unusual. Many first-century Jews assumed that as children of Abraham, they had a secure place in God's Kingdom. The question then became: “What level of obedience proves I belong? How far must I go? What exactly is required?” Jesus answers the question with another question: “What does the Law of Moses say? How do you read it?” / That is masterful. Jesus does not reject the Law. He points the man back to it. The Law was never the problem. The problem was the human heart trying to use the Law for self-justification. The man answers well. He combines Deuteronomy 6:5 and Leviticus 19:18: Love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, strength, and mind, and love your neighbor as yourself. Jesus says, “Right. Do this and you will live.” Now, we need to hear Jesus carefully. Jesus is not saying the man can earn salvation by trying harder. Jesus is pressing the man to face the true standard. Perfect love for God and perfect love for neighbor would indeed describe a righteous life. The problem is that none of us has lived that way. / The man knows it too. So, Luke says he...

When they had assembled, he said to them, “Gentlemen, brothers, although I had done nothing against the people or the customs of our fathers, yet I was handed over as a prisoner from Jerusalem to the Romans. 18 After they interrogated me, they wanted to release me, because there were no grounds for the death penalty in my case. 19 But when the Jews objected, I was compelled to appeal to Caesar—not that I had any charge to bring against my own people. 20 That is why I asked to see you and speak to you, since it is because of the hope of Israel that I am bound with this chain.” 21 They said to him, “We have not received any letters about you from Judea, and none of the brothers who came here has reported or said anything evil about you. 22 But we would like to hear from you what you think, because we know that people everywhere are speaking against this sect.” 23 They set a day to meet with Paul, and even more of them came to the place where he was staying. From morning till evening he explained and testified about the kingdom of God. He also tried to convince them about Jesus, both from the Law of Moses and the Prophets. 24 Some were convinced by what he said, but others continued in their unbelief. 25 They were arguing with one another and began to leave after Paul made this one statement: “The Holy Spirit spoke the truth to your [1] fathers through Isaiah the prophet: 26 Go to this people and say, You will keep hearing and yet never understand; you will keep seeing and yet never perceive. 27 For the heart of this people has grown dull, their ears are hard of hearing, and they have closed their eyes. Otherwise they might see with their eyes, hear with their ears, understand with their heart, and turn, and I would heal them. [2] 28 “Therefore let it be known to you that this salvation from God has been sent to the Gentiles, and they will listen!” [3] 30 For two whole years Paul stayed in his own rented house and welcomed all who came to visit him. 31 He was preaching the kingdom of God and teaching about the Lord Jesus Christ with all boldness and without anyone stopping him.
