Barney Mauleverer embodies a life philosophy of putting yourself in luck's path through curiosity and generalist thinking. Rather than following a linear career plan, he embraced chaos and uncertainty in his twenties, taking seemingly random jobs that ultimately built the foundation for entrepreneurial success. His approach centers on listening first - understanding what customers and buyers actually need before developing solutions. At the core of his philosophy is the belief that entrepreneurs are the true risk-takers who deserve recognition, not the buyers and investors often treated as industry gods. He advocates for open collaboration over competitive secrecy, viewing global challenges like population growth as opportunities for innovation rather than insurmountable problems. ~His current Future of Food initiative reflects this worldview - creating platforms for entrepreneurs to share knowledge and collectively address industry challenges while championing the next generation of food innovators.Key TakeawaysEmbrace being a generalist - Multiple interests and skills can be a superpower rather than a weakness in entrepreneurshipPut yourself in luck's path - Take varied experiences and stay curious about different opportunities to create your own breaksListen before you sell - Understand customer pain points and buyer motivations before developing products or pitchesPre-sell the vision - Test market demand with concepts before investing heavily in product development and manufacturingThink like your buyer - Consider what success looks like for the person across the table, not just what you want to achieveFail forward strategically - Use disasters and rejections as learning opportunities rather than endpointsBuild from customer need - Start with solving real problems rather than falling in love with your own product ideasChampion the risk-takers - Recognize entrepreneurs as the true drivers of innovation rather than treating buyers and investors as godsCollaborate openly - Share knowledge and work together on industry-wide challenges rather than hoarding competitive advantagesFocus on opportunity over problems - Frame global challenges like population growth and resource constraints as innovation opportunities rather than insurmountable issues Daring Creativity. In this lecture, we explore Jay Barney's influential Resource-Based View of the firm and his argument that sustainable competitive advantage comes from unique internal resources and capabilities. We examine the VRIN framework — resources that are valuable, rare, inimitable, and non-substitutable — and see how companies from Apple to Toyota and Zara have leveraged such resources to maintain their edge. The episode also considers critiques of RBV, its extension into dynamic capabilities, and the ethical questions raised when resources such as data, culture, or natural assets are used for competitive advantage. Barney's work reminds us that strategy is not only about markets and positioning, but about what firms uniquely bring to the competition.
On Newberg & Hannah, we chew on the wildest questions of the week: Taco Bell worms, a $1.7 billion Powerball fantasy, and what your stomach photos are really saying. Fresh off dazzling and wowing us and all of Musikfest on opening night, Barney Cortez kicks off our first interview post-fest as we get back in to our regular programming. And we are honored to bring his sound on the show, as it's right up our alley, and we think you'll love it too.In addition to having him share his story and his music, we were lucky to catch some video of his performance during Musikfest where he broke not 1 but 2 strings during the song! Can't wait to hear what was going through his head in that moment.Sounds like he'll be able to perform live during the show as well. And a surprise guest co-host - all the way from Hong Kong: Dan Drago of 25 O'Clock Pod!! Which may not be a complete surprise since Barney is from Philly and Dan is in fact the person to first introduce me to his music.Barney Cortez is a songwriter/producer hailing from Philadelphia. Along with Nick Bockrath (Cage The Elephant), he founded the band Nicos Gun and was their sole singer/songwriter. 2018 found him breaking off to make his own EP "Pretty Thin", which introduced his unique brand of pop/rock sensibilities. After a steady release of four EP's, a tour of Europe and a string of singles, he released his debut album "Hullabaloo" on La Reserve Records. The song "Shit River" with Rayland Baxter made its way onto Spotify's "Fresh Folk" playlist amongst others. 2025 finds him gearing up for the release of his second LP "Earth Station", which was mixed by Jeff Lucci of Mo Lowda & the Humble. His most cohesive work to date, "Earth Station" shines a light on Cortez' clever mix of psych rock, sonic experimentation and heartfelt, honest storytelling. Don't miss this one and be sure to catch Barney perform live when is plays nearby!Text us your thoughts on this episode, and who should be OUR #NextFavBand...As always, our hope is to bring you "your next favorite band". Paratus Group executive chairman Barney Harmse joins the TechCentral Show to share the story of the telecommunications group's rise from small beginnings in Angola and Namibia more than 20 years ago and how it became one of Southern Africa's biggest ICT infrastructure players. Paratus started life in Angola in 2003, evolving from a local internet service provider into a pan‑African telecoms powerhouse. Co-founded by Harmse with Schalk Erasmus, Rolf Mendelsohn, Martin Boese and Miles October, it grew rapidly and now has infrastructure across the region, including in Zambia, Botswana, South Africa, Mozambique, the DRC and Namibia. This week, it officially launched the first privately owned mobile network operator in Namibia, which will compete directly with the state-owned incumbents. Today the business works closely with the likes of Starlink, Google and Meta Platforms and plays a significant role in long-distance, metropolitan and access networks across the region. It also helped land Google's Equiano cable on the Namibian coast. In this lively interview with TechCentral editor Duncan McLeod, Harmse unpacks the Paratus story, touching on: • What building telecoms infrastructure across the vast reaches of Southern Africa has entailed, including memorable moments along the way; • The company's financial backers, and its capital-raising plans – including a possible future listing in New York; • Why it built a network of long-distance fibre across Southern Africa; • Paratus's relationship with Elon Musk's Starlink, and why it's a key role player in the launch of the low-Earth orbit satellite provider's offering across the region; • The launch of the mobile network in Namibia and why it's a significant development in the Paratus story; and • The opportunities still ahead for Paratus Group. Don't miss a great interview! TechCentral

If I'm honest with you, the passing of John Barnett on Sunday has actually hit our house quite hard over the last three days - because at the start, nobody knew anything about what had happened. And as the information has come out, we've realized that when my husband bumped into him on the street on Sunday afternoon, it was literally just before he died They stopped for a chat, husband went in one direction, Barnett went in the other direction, and it wouldn't have been another 200m or so beyond that, that John collapsed. Now, I don't think the full force of it actually hit me until I was watching the television news about this last night, because, you know, you're watching somebody alive on TV in the footage, but not alive in real life anymore. And what struck me last night was that I never realized how big a force John Barnett was for us in New Zealand. I knew what he'd done, we all knew what he'd done - Shorty Street, Whale Rider, all of that. But it wasn't until I heard the list rattled off that I realized the scale of the impact - Footrot Flats, Sione's Wedding, Whale Rider, Shortland Street, Once Were Warriors, What Becomes of the Brokenhearted, Outrageous Fortune, apparently commissioning Dave Dobbyn and Herbs to make 'Slice of Heaven', and apparently helping to rescue people in Dawn Raid. I mean, how much of what we consider to be intrinsic parts of our culture, or at least reflections of our culture back to us, were created or facilitated by John Barnett? It was really easy to forget that when you knew John, because he's really easygoing and really gracious, never reminded you of what a big deal he actually was. He was just Barney, who you bumped into almost every week on the kindy run or at the weekend sitting outside Dizengoff or strolling down Ponsonby Road. The last time I saw him and sat down and properly had a chat to him was over dinner at Prego not long ago. And the thing that struck me about him was how much into life he still was at the age of 79. He still had an eye for a good yarn, he was telling us about the story he never got around to making, which is of the only woman ever to be jailed in London for being a hitman. She was a Kiwi - and his eyes lit up and he cracked a big smile telling the story. He was still enthusiastic about telling our stories back to us. I will miss seeing John on my walks, not nearly as much as his family and his wife and his dearest friends will miss him - but how lucky were we that he spent his life giving us this part of New Zealand back to us? In this episode we invite David Nathan to look back on his illustrious 60 years as "the British Ambassador of Soul". Our guest commences by recalling his gateway into Black American music: the covers of Shirelles and Miracles classics included on the first two Beatles albums. He furthermore describes the thrill of seeing Motown star Mary Wells supporting the Fab Four at Kilburn's State Cinema in October 1964, followed by his founding of the Nina Simone Appreciation Society. We hear about the Soul City record store David ran with the legendary Dave Godin – and about John Abbey's trailblazing Blues & Soul magazine, for which our guest began writing in 1968. Barney quotes from David's 1968 B&S profile of Aretha Franklin, with whom he later enjoyed a long friendship. The release of Make It Easy on Yourself – a box set David compiled of Dionne Warwick's immortal Scepter recordings – is the cue for us to hear clips from his 2012 audio interview with the Bacharach & David muse... and to learn about another "soulful diva" who became his close friend. We bring our guest's story more up-to-date with his reflections on yet another diva/pal, the one and only Chaka Khan. Mention of the former Rufus frontwoman's favourite producer, Arif Mardin, leads to discussion of Main Course, the Mardin-helmed album on which the Bee Gees "went disco" 50 long summers ago. David then reminisces about his own disco dalliances in '70s New York and his mid-'80s coastal switch to L.A. We wrap up by paying tribute to another key white writer on Black R&B and soul: the late Michael Lydon, whose voice can be heard in this episode introducing his fabulous 1977 audio interview with the wicked Wilson Pickett. Mark and Jasper talk us out with their thoughts on (and quotes from) pieces recently added to the RBP library, including Jim Farber's 1978 interview with Earth, Wind & Fire's Maurice White and Ian Winwood's 2001 trashing of Creed live in Louisville. Many thanks to special guest David Nathan. Visit his website at davidnathan.com. Dionne Warwick: Make It Easy On Yourself – The Scepter Recordings 1962-1971 is out now on SoulMusic Records. Pieces discussed: Aretha Franklin: Aretha's Artistry, Dionne Warwick (2012), Chaka Khan: Back...From Back In The Day, Back on course with the Bee Gees, How the Bee Gees got into Disco: An Oral History of Main Course, Arif Mardin: Producer, Wilson Pickett (1977), Return of the Wicked Pickett, Top Tunes: The Beach Boys, Bobby Womack: Bobby's got Understanding, Earth Wind & Fire: Extraterrestrial R&B, Creed live and From Kingston with love.

“I always say that singing and performing was as much a part of my DNA as cystic fibrosis.” Julia RaeFrom the moment Julia Rae could speak, she was singing, and from the moment she could dream, she was already imagining a bigger stage. As her mother fondly recalls, at just two years old, Julia was watching Barney on TV and asked, “How do I get in there and do that with him?” That instinct, that pull toward performance, was never just about the spotlight. For Julia Rae, the stage became her sanctuary, and later, her platform for purpose.Diagnosed with cystic fibrosis at birth, Julia's life has never followed an easy script. But instead of letting a chronic illness limit her, she embraced the full range of her voice, as a singer, actress, writer, and advocate. She didn't just want to perform; she wanted to make a difference. At 16, Julia founded Singing at the Top of My Lungs, a nonprofit inspired by her own hospital experiences. Initially, the organization supported both CF research and creative therapies at children's hospitals. But as larger institutions took a stronger lead in research, Julia saw a growing gap elsewhere.“I've decided to devote all of Singing at the Top of My Lungs to music and creative art therapies... They are significantly underfunded, not covered by insurance, and they are often, honestly, the unsung heroes of children's hospitals.”Julia's foundation now champions music and art therapies — the very programs that once transformed her own stays in sterile hospital rooms into spaces of joy and creativity. She knows firsthand that healing isn't just about medicine — it's also about expression, play, and being seen as more than your diagnosis. Her own career blossomed when a YouTube performance caught the attention of a Beverly Hills record producer, leading to her single “Be That Girl” being featured in the film The Greening of Whitney Brown. She's since performed the national anthem at major sports arenas, starred in national commercials, and most recently, in the 2024 film Playing Through. Her appearance on ABC's Listen to Your Heart introduced her to a national audience, but she never let fame outshine her mission. In parallel with her artistic pursuits, Julia has become a tireless advocate. She co-created and hosted Making It Matterwith the Boomer Esiason Foundation, currently leads Uncommon Lungs with Vertex Pharmaceuticals, and recently launched a podcast called A Deeper Look, spotlighting bold, thoughtful conversations with inspiring women.Julia Rae is more than a performer, she's a force. Her life is a testament to what happens when passion meets purpose, and when a voice refuses to be silenced by circumstance. For the chronic illness community, and for anyone who's ever been told “you can't” — Julia's story sings a different tune. She's not just making music. She's making it matter. He kicks things off with exciting news — the long-awaited Glimmer Man book is finished, sent to the editors, and on track for release soon. Then, Kyle revisits one of the most famous UFO encounters in history: the 1961 abduction of Betty and Barney Hill. Driving home late one September night, the couple spotted a strange light in the sky. What began as curiosity quickly spiraled into terror — the object followed them, hovered low, and revealed figures watching from inside. Moments later, the Hills heard an unsettling series of buzzing sounds, and their memories fractured. By the time they reached home, two hours had vanished without explanation. In the days that followed, physical evidence and disturbing dreams deepened the mystery: torn clothing, scuffed shoes, magnetic anomalies on their car, and vivid visions of being taken aboard a craft. Under hypnosis, both Betty and Barney described nearly identical experiences of medical examinations and encounters with non-human beings. Were their memories the product of suggestion, stress, or sleep paralysis? Or did the Hills truly become the first widely publicized abductees in modern UFO history? Their story continues to spark debate, making it one of the most enduring cases of all time. All that and more on this episode of Expanded Perspectives! FESTIVAL STORY 4: End of an era: Roswell Street congregation to join Woodstock church Roswell Street Baptist Church, once a powerhouse in Marietta and a cornerstone of the Southern Baptist community, is starting a new chapter—one that’s bittersweet for many. After years of decline, the church will merge with First Baptist Woodstock, becoming its second location. The numbers tell the story: membership dropped from 9,200 in 2014 to just 3,600 last year. Weekly attendance? Down to 433. The church even had to demolish its historic chapel. Starting Sunday, Christian Norman, an associate pastor from Woodstock, will step in as Roswell Street’s new pastor. The merger will take six months to finalize, with a full relaunch planned for 2026—complete with a new name that nods to Roswell Street’s history while embracing its future. STORY 5: Cobb super kicks off school year with visit to Vaughan Elementary First day of school vibes were in full swing at Vaughan Elementary on Monday, and Cobb Schools Superintendent Chris Ragsdale made the rounds to wish students a great year ahead. Over 105,000 students and 17,000 staff returned across 113 schools, but at Vaughan, the Rockets were already soaring—literally reciting their motto: “Rockets of Vaughan soar on!” In Kelli Connor’s second-grade class, kids prepped for Ragsdale’s visit by comparing his traits to the mischievous “No David!” from David Shannon’s book. (Spoiler: Ragsdale’s character won out.) During a press conference—fielding questions from students, not reporters—Ragsdale praised Cobb’s teachers as “superstars” and touched on AI, new safety measures (hello, Vapor Wake K-9s), and the upcoming cell phone restrictions. Break: STORY 6: Mayor Tumlin to run again, serve through grandchildren’s eyes Mayor Steve “Thunder” Tumlin is running again—though, if you ask him, it wasn’t exactly his idea at first. But with three longtime council members—Andy Morris, Grif Chalfant, and Johnny Walker—stepping down, Tumlin, 78, felt a sense of duty. Born and raised in Marietta, Tumlin’s roots run deep. His six grandkids are either in Marietta schools or just graduated, and he says that perspective—seeing the city through their eyes—shapes his leadership. As for his challengers, 23-year-old Sam Foster and 26-year-old Sully Diaz, Tumlin’s ready to defend his record. On affordable housing, he’s all about balance. “If it’s not livable, it’s not affordable,” he said. The election’s set for November 4, with early voting starting October 14. STORY 7: 'No teeth': Mableton’s code enforcement waits on court Mableton took over its own code enforcement back in March, but there’s a snag—no municipal court yet to back it up. Without one, fines for violations? Not happening. The city’s first-ever municipal court is expected to open in “three to six months,” says spokesperson Gregory Woods. Until then, code enforcement is doing what it can, issuing about 160 violation notices a month. Compliance? Just 30% so far, though Woods says that’ll improve once the court’s running. The city’s working fast to get the court operational. They’ve already hired a court administrator, Mallory Minor, and are recruiting for key roles like judge and prosecutor. Once open, the court will focus on the worst violations first. For now, Mableton’s educating residents on compliance and resources. The court, when ready, will be at 1245 Veterans Memorial Highway. We’ll have closing comments after this. Break: INGLES 9 Signoff- Thanks again for hanging out with us on today’s Marietta Daily Journal Podcast. Inspired By a True Crime Case: In 1932, the quiet town of Blackwood was shattered when unemployed miner Bernard Gorski brutally murdered three of his children, leaving behind a lone survivor and a trail of haunting questions,THE TRUE CRIME CASE THIS STORY IS BASED ON: In July 1932, the quiet coal-mining borough of Lykens, Pennsylvania, was shaken by a horrifying crime. Barney Godleski, a 31‑year‑old unemployed miner, brutally murdered three of his four children—Paul (8), Lillian (6), and Alberta (4)—in the basement of their East Main Street home. Only 10‑year‑old Helen survived, reportedly because she “kept house” for her father and he was “proud” of her. On the morning of July 14, Helen awoke to find her sister missing and bloodstains on her pillow. Following a trail of blood, she found her father with a self‑inflicted throat wound. At his instruction, she fetched local undertaker James Heldt, to whom Barney confessed his crime. Police arrived to find Barney calmly sitting at the kitchen table with the axe and butcher knife he used for the murders. The children's bodies were discovered in the cellar, one nearly decapitated. Barney confessed fully, stating that after a quarrel at a tavern and brooding over his marital troubles—his wife Lucille had left days earlier to work in Mount Carmel—he decided to kill the children and then himself. He admitted sparing Helen intentionally. Lucille, who had a past history of drug addiction and was working under an alias in Mount Carmel, expressed bitter anger and claimed she had feared Barney would harm the children, though locals described Barney as a devoted father and model citizen. Awaiting trial in Dauphin County Jail, Barney attempted suicide multiple times. On July 22, 1932, just eight days after the murders, he succeeded by hanging himself with his shirt sleeves in his cell. He was buried alongside the children he killed. The tragedy spiraled into further hardship for the family: Lucille was arrested for disorderly conduct the following month, and within two years both of her parents died, as did her brother in a mining accident. The eventual fates of Lucille and Helen remain unknown, with records only hinting that Lucille may have moved to New York by 1934. This grim case left behind unanswered questions about Barney's mental state, Lucille's role in the family breakdown, and the lasting impact on the lone surviving child.ORIGINAL CASE SOURCES…https://paoddities.blogspot.com/2020/06/the-lykens-triple-axe-murder-of-1932.htmlhttps://www.lykensvalley.org/three-children-killed-in-axe-murder-in-lykens-1932/https://www.lykensvalley.org/lykens-funeral-for-ax-murder-victims-1932/Music provided by Alibi Music Library= = = = ="I have come into the world as a light, so that no one who believes in me should stay in darkness." — John 12:46= = = = =WeirdDarkness® is a registered trademark. Full Text of ReadingsWednesday of the Seventeenth Week in Ordinary Time Lectionary: 403The Saint of the day is Blessed Solanus CaseyBlessed Solanus Casey's Story Barney Casey became one of Detroit's best-known priests even though he was not allowed to preach formally or to hear confessions! Barney came from a large family in Oak Grove, Wisconsin. At the age of 21, and after he had worked as a logger, a hospital orderly, a streetcar operator, and a prison guard, he entered St. Francis Seminary in Milwaukee—where he found the studies difficult. He left there, and in 1896, joined the Capuchins in Detroit, taking the name Solanus. His studies for the priesthood were again arduous. On July 24, 1904, Solanus was ordained, but because his knowledge of theology was judged to be weak, he was not given permission to hear confessions or to preach. A Franciscan Capuchin who knew him well said this annoying restriction “brought forth in him a greatness and a holiness that might never have been realized in any other way.” During his 14 years as porter and sacristan in Yonkers, New York, the people there recognized Solanus as a fine speaker. James Derum, his biographer writes, “For, though he was forbidden to deliver doctrinal sermons, he could give inspirational talks, or feverinos, as the Capuchins termed them.” His spiritual fire deeply impressed his listeners. Father Solanus served at parishes in Manhattan and Harlem before returning to Detroit, where he was porter and sacristan for 20 years at St. Bonaventure Monastery. Every Wednesday afternoon he conducted well-attended services for the sick. A co-worker estimates that on the average day 150 to 200 people came to see Father Solanus in the front office. Most of them came to receive his blessing; 40 to 50 came for consultation. Many people considered him instrumental in cures and other blessings they received. Father Solanus' sense of God's providence inspired many of his visitors. “Blessed be God in all his designs” was one of his favorite expressions. The many friends of Father Solanus helped the Capuchins begin a soup kitchen during the Depression. Capuchins are still feeding the hungry there today. In failing health, Solanus was transferred to the Capuchin novitiate in Huntington, Indiana, in 1946, where he lived for ten years until needing to be hospitalized in Detroit. Father Solanus died on July 31, 1957. An estimated 20,000 people passed by his coffin before his burial in St. Bonaventure Church in Detroit. At the funeral Mass, the provincial Father Gerald said: “His was a life of service and love for people like me and you. When he was not himself sick, he nevertheless suffered with and for you that were sick. When he was not physically hungry, he hungered with people like you. He had a divine love for people. He loved people for what he could do for them—and for God, through them.” In 1960, a Father Solanus Guild was formed in Detroit to aid Capuchin seminarians. By 1967, the guild had 5,000 members—many of them grateful recipients of his practical advice and his comforting assurance that God would not abandon them in their trials. Solanus Casey was declared Venerable in 1995, and beatified on November 18, 2017. Reflection His biographer James Patrick Derum writes that eventually Father Solanus was weary from bearing the burdens of the people who visited him. “Long since, he had come to know the Christ-taught truth that pure love of God and one's fellowmen as children of God are in the final event all that matter. Living this truth ardently and continuously had made him, spiritually, a free man—free from slavery to passions, from self-seeking, from self-indulgence, from self-pity—free to serve wholly both God and man” (The Porter of St. Bonaventure's, page 199).
