Summary: In this episode, Cole sits down with Niclas Bornling, an outdoor industry veteran, to discuss the challenges faced by outdoor brands. They explore the lessons to be learned from the decline of brands like Quicksilver and DC Shoes in the early 2000s and how those lessons can be applied to the current state of the industry. They highlight the importance of understanding the evolving consumer landscape and the need for brands to adapt to the changing preferences and cultural references of younger generations. It emphasizes the need to listen and adapt to the changing cultural landscape. Takeaways: Outdoor brands need to understand and adapt to the evolving consumer landscape, particularly the preferences and cultural references of younger generations. The decline of brands like Quicksilver and DC Shoes in the early 2000s serves as a lesson for the current state of the industry. The GorpCore trend, while currently popular, may not last forever, and brands should not rely solely on its success. Telling relevant stories and offering solutions that resonate with the evolving audience is crucial for the success of outdoor brands. Understanding and connecting with a specific audience is crucial in marketing. Brands should surround themselves with diverse perspectives to stay relevant and adapt to the changing cultural landscape. Knowing your audience and telling meaningful, relevant stories is key to building a successful brand.

Michael Minter has had a very successful career as a creative marketer working with some of the world's largest footwear brands. Michael is currently the CMO of Reef, a 40-year-old legendary sandal brand that has recently seen an expansion in its product catalog and growth in eCommerce sales. Prior to Reef, Michael was the Global Head of Marketing for DC Shoes, leading many of the company's iconic collaborations with the likes of the Andy Warhol foundation and the Mandalorian. Michael and I discuss how his upbringing in the remote jungles of Papua New Guinea allowed him to approach brand marketing from a very unique perspective. We talk about his formal educational training first at SCAD followed by San Diego State University, and Michael provides his advice for anyone looking to become a CMO or creative director. This podcast was a lot of fun for me, because I also got to geek out on skate, snow, and surf culture, and we debate the topic of keeping aging sponsored pros on the payroll or not. Both of us disagree slightly on the topic, but it makes for some interesting takeaways for brands. If you are interested in creative, marketing, brand positioning, partnerships and collaborations, then you will enjoy this episode. Discussion Topics:(1:34) Growing up in Papua New Guinea.(4:35) How an analog youth in a remote village led to a unique cultural perspective.(8:20) Brands that Michael admires.(12:19) The role good creative plays in marketing strategies.(22:48) Creative education.(26:28) Advice for trying to become a CMO at a major brand.(31:06) The importance of collaborations for brand growth.(43:51) Keeping legendary team riders on the payroll.(51:29) Working with Ken Block.(55:26) Growth potential for Reef.(58:40) Rapid fire.

Steven Wilcox is a graduate of Chapman University in Orange County, California. After school, he began working with global action sports brands such as Oakley, Quiksilver, DC Shoes and Roxy, where he developed a fundamental understanding of brand building and the strategies required to authentically reach a brand's audience. Today, Steven is the Founder and CEO of PARKIT, an outdoor brand that wants you to get outside and Enjoy The Exploration. PARKIT's first product, an outdoor chair they call VOYAGER, launched on Kickstarter during the peak of COVID-19. Happy New Year and welcome to 2023! It is once again time to talk with Rick about the burning questions of New Year's goals, blue chip muscle cars, and the best the restoration market will continue to grow (likely trucks). Unfortunately, as most of you have likely already heard, the death of Ken Block is where the initial focus of this episode is dedicated. Ken left a legacy in our work akin to Dale Earnhardt in some way, and he defined the pursuit of passion. He had two entirely different careers in founding DC Shoes and Hoonigan, and he is one person who will always leave an impression on all of us who are following in his footsteps. In the end though, he was a man who had a wife and three children, all of whom are now without him. Our sincere condolences and prayers go out to all of them. The post TMCP #529: Ask Rick – New Year 2023! Ken Block Memories, Pickup Truck Restoration Market Growth, Return on Investment Cars first appeared on The Muscle Car Place.

Damon Way is a designer, brand marketer, and the co-founder of DC Shoes. With the help of his brother, pioneering skateboarder Danny Way, DC become one of the most sought after skate brands of the 90's. Under Way's guidance, DC was one of the first streetwear brands to succsessfluly implelment artist collaborations and limited edition releases into their product line. In 2004, DC was sold to Quiksilver and the brand slowly lost much of its luster without his creative control. In this episode, we sit down to discuss whether skateboarders or surfers have better style, why the music that we listen to no longer defines our identities, and why Toyota Prius headlights are so damn ugly.

Dr. Hammerstedt is joined today by Sean Lake to discuss how to stay Fit over Forty. He talks about his transition from being an active snowboarder in his 20s - to then being in his 30s, with less activity and not liking the way he felt. He started to exercise realizing that he craved physical activity. He discusses how fitness is a major tool in being able to give you energy to be the parent/ person you want to be. It is all about making the small decisions to get the big results. He shares that what you eat matters, and by improving one meal a day, you will slowly progress to making the eating habits you are hoping for. Sean Lake grew up in Winchester, Massachusetts, before moving to Utah to become a professional snowboarder and general ski bum. Once he got that out of his system, he graduated from the University of Utah, using that degree to join Burton Snowboards, work as Shaun White's Team Manager, and land a spot as the Director of Sports Marketing at DC Shoes. After decades in action sports marketing, Sean co-founded BUBS Naturals, a line of collagen peptides and other all-natural supplements that help athletes at all levels perform and feel their best. Sean named BUBS Naturals after his childhood best friend Glen “BUB” Doherty, a Navy SEAL who was killed in Benghazi, Libya on 9/11 in 2012. In addition to remembering Glen for the patriot he is, the BUBS ethos centers around the passionate and adventure-seeking life that Glen lived. Sean and the BUBS Naturals family further honor “Bub” by donating 10% of all profits to charities that support veterans.
