Dana Schechter or Insect Ark and Swans joins us this week. We spend a lot of time talking about “Raw Blood Singing” the new Insect Ark album, a record that I can say right now, will figure prominently on my year end list. Since Dana plays in one of my favorite bands, Swans, the conversation naturally meanders into working with Michael Gira, Brooklyn in the early part of the century and the subtle passage of time. Intro: “All the Dark Things” – Mike Hill Outro: “Youth Body Swayed” – Insect Ark
A fixture of the Salt Lake City music scene, Andy Patterson has been active in music production behind the controls at his studio, The Boar's Nest, and making his own brand of heavy since the 90s, starting off by going on tour with Iceburn and then drumming in previous bands SubRosa and Insect Ark. His latest outfit, The Otolith, sees him reunited with fellow members of SubRosa and their debut record comes out very soon. You could not find a more fitting nickname than "The Loud Guy" for Andy, when it comes to his music and production anyway (Spoiler alert: he's pretty mild-mannered). Dylan and Andy explore his origins as a musician and get deep into the nitty gritty of his tried-and-true production approaches, plus getting a drum kit by searching for Satan, playing eight sets as the mayor of Crucial Fest, recognizing a genuine take versus a perfect one, Frankensteining the Iceburn remasters, how to really say Cirith Ungol, bailing out Visigoth at Fire in the Mountains, chasing the dragon for horror movies, and recounts his lost year of 2020. And of course, we talk about SLC Punk! Support The Otolith over at Blues Funeral Recordings Track featured is "Hubris" off their upcoming debut, Folium Limina, out on October 21st!
Today we are giving you the last video of our early Consouling Sounds-series (don't worry - season 2 is soon to start) by presenting the amazing Dana Schechter! We have already featured an interview with Dana a few months ago, but don't think that we are giving you the same thing twice, because we are not. This interview was done for Consouling Sounds' 24 Hours of Deep Listening event and it was based on a different set of question. As we always hold Dana in very, very high regard because of her awesome musicianship, we figured this would be an awesome way to end our first series of Consouling-related interviews (if you try to find the fifth and last installment of this series of video-interviews you should check back with consouling.veilofsound.com - maybe you can find it there ;-) This time we focused very much on her one-woman-project Insect Ark and how it developed and changed over the years, how she got into playing this kind of music and why reforming as a solo project also gave her a lot of freedom for playing shows alone and without being dependent on other people. A now without much further ado, enjoy the chat with the wonderful Dana Schechter!
INSECT ARK, the long-running exploratory endeavor led by Dana Schechter, recently released its Future Fossils EP, an alluring collection of solo archived outtakes, excerpts, and live improv tracks born between 2016 and 2018, via Belgium's Consouling Sounds. When Dana Schechter started INSECT ARK as her “true” solo project in 2012, she set out to build desolate and hallucinogenic galaxies of sound entirely on her own. Writing and playing solo offered an escape into the deepest realms of self-reflection, dredging and birthing a hitherto sonic beast that was, it turns out, utterly unhinged and totally liberating. Focusing on experimental, drone, noise, and avant-garde noise, INSECT ARK's first years produced records that were raw, ominous, and totally unique. While defying comparison, these new sounds possessed Schechter's distinct musical spirit, woven throughout her twenty-plus years of band/collaboration work. After three releases (2012's Collapsar7”, 2013's Long Arms10”, 2015's Portal/WellLP), INSECT ARK added live drums to the mix, and the resulting albums — 2018's Marrow Hymns (with drummer Ashley Spungin) and 2020's The Vanishing (with drummer Andy Patterson) — showed that her singular vision could also expand into heavier and more crushing territory within a collaborative space. The power that live drums brought to INSECT ARK helped gather a new fan base in the heavy-music world, adding another layer to the band's palette. Now, after nine years of existence, INSECT ARK has come full circle to once again embrace solo work on 2021's Future Fossils. http://www.insectark.com http://www.insectark.bandcamp.com http://www.facebook.com/InsectArk http://www.instagram.com/insectark This episode is proudly brought to you by: Betterhelp : https://www.betterhelp.com/sipod for 10% off Mack Weldon: https://www.mackweldon.com/suckit Promo Code "SUCKIT" for 20% off! Suh, dude! Three audio engineers in a row?! Yep, buckle up because the one and only Andy Patterson (Subrosa, Insect Ark, DONE) is our guest this week. You know how we often say “this week’s episode is a real treat”, or “this was a fun one” or “this was a wild ride”? Well, there aren’t enough catchy sayings for this one. We really hit the ground running this week! Even before we started recording, this one went in some interesting places. Get ready for some laughs. Having been in 30+ bands, and recorded at least twice that many, Andy Patterson has seen some stuff and he has stories for days. From receiving a death threat recently to a seemingly empty tent at Hellfest. And from recording Zach De La Rocha voiceovers in his LA apartment for a RATM DVD release to the corduroy hats his mom made for his entire first band, AP shares some good ones. Stick around for:-Clean grunge and melting-A full re-release of Iceburn's catalog on Southern Lord-Recording bass direct into the mixer with an Ibanez Soundgear on Hephaestus...oof-Replacing the snare hits on an entire record with a hand "reamped" snare-The time James Hetfield said, "I know where my dick's been. Most of the time."-Getting his first death threatJust a sampling of Andy’s most recent bands, and sorry, no link to his studio website, gotta have the secret password.Insect Arkhttps://insectark.bandcamp.com/DONEhttps://donebandmusic.bandcamp.com/Subrosahttps://subrosausa.bandcamp.com/This Week’s SubmissionsBog Monkey - “El Blanco”https://bogmonkey.bandcamp.com/album/bog-monkey-ep Søma - “Shake an Anagram”https://hypnossoma.bandcamp.com/ DEAD - “Digging Holes” https://deadsounds.bandcamp.com/album/raving-drooling Mouth Breathe(r) - “Eat God, See Acid” https://mouthbreather9.bandcamp.com/ Bands! This show features bassist & lap steel guitarist, Dana Schechter. When we recorded this, she was staying in Berlin after cutting a tour short for her band Insect Ark. She talks about how wild it was for the band and the crew. Someone may have had to sneak back into their home country, but that's all I'm saying about that right now. Dana talks about growing up in the early 80's Bay Area metal scene, driving around and hanging out with Cliff Burton; and how his death really made her focus on bass. She also talks about some incredible bands she's been a part of, like Gifthorse, Angels Of Light, and Swans and the difficulties of being an independent artist. She's recently released a new album by Insect Ark but it wasn't easy. If you like heavy, instrumental music, buy it! Follow Dana @insectark. Follow us @performanceanx. Subscribe, rate, review, share. Without further adieu, here's Dana Schechter

Ashley Spungin is a very unique and undeniable force. She has been a part of bands such as Purple Rhinestone Eagle, Taurus and Insect Ark. Ashley makes noise generating oscillator pedals, she drums, and she is an all around bad ass. Her album "Marrow Hymns" by Insect Ark is out now on Profound Lore Records, and she joined me for jokes and chats about music, touring and as always, we shared music. Closing track "Sea Harps" by Insect Ark. "I Hate Music" theme by Marius Sjoli.
ISN Radio looks at music from the upcoming Voidstar Productions 25th Anniversary Festival. Features tracks by Enduser, Insect Ark, ∆Aimon, Cenotype, Marching Dynamics, High-Functioning Flesh, Author & Punisher, Statiqbloom, and Timeghost.
