It's the end of an era in the MCU, as Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 3 has just hit theaters - and it's the last hurrah of the Marvel Cinematic Universe group of characters that link audiences to the Infinity Saga... sure, some heroes will carry over, but it does feel like we are saying good-bye to the MCU as we know it.   But what kind of ending is it, and how does it stack up against the rest of the MCU films released since Avengers: Endgame?   That's what the Deucecast crew aims to find out -- with Mikey, Dave, and #TwitterlessDrEarl on the show, and Young Spawn of Ryfun, the Pride of Albany, GA, Lil G, but now he's a Big G, fresh off of his prom and headed to Senior Portraits, Garrison Ryfun joins the show to discuss and rank in their own top tens those very films.   Starting with Spider-Man Far From Home, then to Black Widow, where the show picks up another guest, one Steve Glosson, who comes in to present his own list.   Then the Shang-Chi, Eternals, Spider-Man No Way Home, then Doctor Strange & the Multiverse of Madness, with Thor Love & Thunder, Black Panther Wakanda Forever, then Ant-Man and the Wasp Quantumania, and ending with Guardians 3, it's a long discussion, but a worthwhile one.   Plus, everyone but Steve (who questions as to whether he's seen it or not) also give their own quick review on Guardians 3 (SPOILER FREE, by the way).   And stick around for the ending, which goes off the rails as usual, from who gets invited to the show, Mikey's dismissal of Scotty Ryfun's concerns, Punisher movies, TMNT movies, Cannonball Run Criterion Collections and so much more. And of course, Casey's Biggest Hits.

We celebrate Free Comic Book Day with Jesse Lonergan and Steve Anderson from Third Eye Comics. Our first-ever spectacular promoting the annual event where comic readers collide to nab free comics but, more importantly, buy comics. Free Comic Book Day is a shop appreciation day, not a customer appreciation day. So, be kind, say thank you, and discover a new universe of titles and characters. Exploration is your mission. In our first portion, we chat extensively with Steve Anderson about his new Buys and Bargains Third Eye Comics location in Annapolis, Maryland. What purpose does this particular store offer that the others don't? What goodies did we come away with during our little shop preview? What does the retailer of one of the country's best comic shops think about the industry today, and what are the comics he's most excited to read? We get into it. In our second half, we speak with cartoonist extraordinaire Jesse Lonergan about his new Mike Mignola collaboration, Miss Truesdale and the Fall of Hyperborea, published by Dark Horse Comics.  For Hellboy fans, this is an essential entry, further detailing the ancient mythology that frequently steers Anung Un Rama's fate. We discuss the responsibility of working with such precious characters and why Lonergan was such a natural fit. We also get into the weeds of pacing, time, and who controls what within the comics medium. It's another can't-miss conversation. There are few days of the year we enjoy more than Free Comic Book Day. We all owe a lot to Joe Field, the Flying Colors comic shop proprietor who originated the concept. If you would like to know more about the event's origins, be sure to listen to The Short Box podcast. The latest episode features an extensive interview with Field. You should also check out the Comic Book Couples Counseling Free Comic Book Day PSA! Most importantly, visit Third Eye Comics! Follow them on Twitter, Instagram, and TikTok. You can also keep track of Jesse Lonergan on Twitter, Instagram, and his Website. Wait, there's more! You should listen to our other Mignolaverse celebration with creators Rob Williams and Warwick Johnson-Cadwell. While Marvel has become synonymous with higher quality superhero cinema since 2008, the years leading up to the MCU had mixed results. Some gave us typical leather clad heroes thwarting extremist villains and others had performances so memorable they would be reprised in the modern movies...THIS was not one of those films. Welcome to season three, episode 97 of Digital Dissection: Pop Culture Nerdity! On this week's podcast our hosts Mark and Joe discuss Marvel's 2004 movie starring Thomas Jane, John Travolta, and Rebecca Romijn; The Punisher! Collin Kelly and Jackson Lanzing return to Comic Book Couples Counseling, discussing their longstanding Star Trek obsession and how they transformed it into a propulsive narrative for the rest of us to enjoy. Their latest IDW Publishing series picks up where Star Trek: Deep Space Nine left off, fulfilling Benjamin Sisko's promise to his son. The Emissary returns from the Wormhole on a mission to halt a God-killing entity while reconnecting with an emotionally anxious Jake Sisko. As longtime Sisko stans ourselves, we've been itching to discuss our favorite Star Trek captain. As a father, he serves a function unlike any other lead character. His priorities create a unique relationship with Starfleet and the Federation, and it's a joy to see how that tug-of-war continues beyond the sevens seasons we consumed on television. Partnering with artists Ramon Rosanas, Oleg Chudakov, Joe Eisma, and Erik Tamayo (not to forget amazing variant cover artists like friend-of-the-pod Christian Ward - peep that gorgeous episode art), Kelly and Lanzing have carved a living universe for Star Trek comics. Their story is free to explore new areas along the timeline; untouched by the live-action iteration. Truly, they're boldly going where no one has gone before. The first six issues in their Star Trek series are currently available and will be collected in the "Godshock" trade paperback on July 18th. Also discussed in this week's episode is the new Guardians of the Galaxy series spearheaded by Jackson Lanzing and Collin Kelly. Part one in the "Grootfall" storyline is now available from Marvel Comics. Mystery surrounds their Space Western, but within this episode, you'll learn how these creators won't leave you stressing for too long. GofG, Star Trek, Captain America, Batman Beyond. Fresh off of scoring the critical and box office hit action film John Wick 4, Tyler Bates (Guardians of the Galaxy Vols. 1 & 2, 300, The Punisher) joins The Film Scorer Podcast! Unsurprisingly, Tyler and I spend a decent amount of time talking about his work on John Wick; not just the latest film, but his work across all four entries and his collaboration across each with Joel J. Richard as well. Throughout the chat, we also cover Tyler's latest series, the animated action/spy show Agent Elvis on Netflix (which he co-scored with Tim Williams), his interest in equitable collaboration, and how he continues to push himself to improve and break his own boundaries. One note: prior to the interview Tyler had spent the preceding few days playing shows with Jerry Cantrell and flying across the country, so he has a slight cold throughout. You can find out more about Tyler on his website. John Wick 4 is in theaters while Agent Elvis is on Netflix, and Tyler's scores, as well as many of his other works, are available digitally on all major platforms.

Nate Powell is a graphic novelist and musician. He is also the first cartoonist to win the National Book Award. Nate Powell has also won four Eisner Awards. His work includes Ozark horror tale Come Again, civil rights icon John Lewis' March trilogy and its follow-up Run, comics essay About Face, and graphic novels Two Dead, Any Empire, and Swallow Me Whole. Nate's new book is Save It For Later. He reflects on how America's culture of the 1980s with the rise of Reaganism, toys like GI Joe, the Punisher comic books, and other celebrations of militant nationalism and violence across American popular culture gave rise to the Trump's MAGAites and American neofascism these decades later. Nate explores questions of “selling out” and his relationship as a younger man to punk music and counter culture and what is lost (or perhaps gained) when subcultures become more mainstreamed and their audiences and artists age with them. Nate also shares what he learned about resistance, struggle, and justice along the color line from the process of working with the titan civil rights hope warrior Rep. John Lewis on the award-winning March graphic novels.  And Chauncey and Nate dialogue about being men of a certain vintage, coming of age in the 1980s, and what it means to be creative for a living. Chauncey continues to share how you can be a hero in your own neighborhood by being attentive to all of the good people and life lessons around you while also be cautious of the evil that may be stalking you at the same time. Chauncey also shares how Donald Trump's MAGAite cultists are so deranged that they actually believe that Trump's pending indictments mean that he is a prophetic figure who is being punished like Jesus Christ. On this week's podcast, Chauncey answers some questions sent in by the listeners to the show.  WHERE CAN YOU FIND ME? Josh Flanagan and Ryan Haupt, missing an itinerant Conor Kilpatrick, sort through some damn fine comic books, many from the Gotham family. There's a shark diversion, a vicious maligning of Gangs of New York, even more education on Betty and Barney, and spoilers for The Core, from 2003. But we promise, it's mostly comics.
