In this week's Middle of Culture, we dive deep into our usual blend of media obsession and existential humor — from the strange delights of villainess light novels and the chaos of gacha games to Tron Ares, which Eden declares “not a good movie… but maybe the best Tron movie.” Peter shares his thoughts on new music from Conjurer and Author & Punisher, reviews Wind and Truth with mixed feelings, and outlines a possible new nonfiction project exploring the moral dehumanization of healthcare. We close by revisiting the bizarre early UK Transformers comics — where Optimus is kind of a jerk, Starscream becomes the original “catty traitor,” and Brawn looks like he escaped a Dollar Tree toy aisle.Episode Notes:Opening Banter:Eden introduces herself as “so eeppy,” prompting Peter to admit defeat against internet slang. The two reflect on “functional depression,” aging, and surviving the current “hellscape.Eden's Media Fixation:Revisits I'm in Love with the Villainess and praises it as one of the best isekai series ever.Explains Prison Life is Easy for a Villainess, a meta comedy about a villainess treating dungeon time as a spa retreat.Attends a PowerPoint Party and presents “Villainess as Protagonist: A Meta-Analysis of Current Media Trends.”Gacha Game Roundup:Stella Sora: “What if Hades was slower and shittier?” Deleted after 45 minutes.Chaos Zero Nightmare: Required two launchers — instant nope.Duet Night Abyss: Promising Warframe-style action without predatory gacha.Tron Ares Review:Eden: “Not a good movie… but maybe the best Tron movie.”Praises its Nine Inch Nails soundtrack and stunning action; mocks Jared Leto's acting.Peter admits he'd watch all three Tron films once they're streaming.Peter's Media Corner:Music: Revisits Testament's Parabellum, discovers Author & Punisher, and praises Conjurer's Unself.Reading: Finishes Wind and Truth, critiques Sanderson's editing, starts Murder Your Employer by Rupert Holmes, and begins Work Won't Love You Back by Sarah Jaffe.Discusses a new nonfiction concept: “Connecting to Purpose: The Moral Dehumanization of Healthcare in America.”Ideological Detour:Eden: “If you're not the owner, you're being exploited.”Peter admits he's “becoming radicalized.”Transformers (UK Comics):Recap of the lost “Man of Iron” episode and this week's The Enemy Within.Discovery: This is possibly where “catty, traitorous Starscream” was born.Braun's design roasted as “the Dollar Tree Transformer.”Optimus Prime called “a dick” for sending Brawn and Starscream into gladiator combat.Praise for Ravage and nostalgia for our childhood toys.Closing:Eden confesses to spending $100 on the new Missing Link R.C. figure — “worth every penny.”Episode ends with a reminder to subscribe, share, and leave a review.

Recorded live from the floor of New York Comic Con 2025, Jace sits down with actor and comic creator Thomas Jane to talk about his latest Comixology Originals series, The Lycan. Known for his work in The Punisher, The Expanse, and Grey Matter, Jane dives into his passion for comics and storytelling, describing The Lycan as a gothic romance with werewolves set in 1797—a dark, atmospheric tale blending period drama, wartime tension, and supernatural horror. Drawing inspiration from films like Nosferatu and Brotherhood of the Wolf, the series follows a group of stranded hunters who strike a desperate deal on an isolated British isle, leading to chaos, blood, and unexpected twists. Jane discusses the advantages of digital storytelling through Comixology's panel-by-panel reading experience, the excitement of eventually collecting the full story in print, and the parallels between his work as an actor and as a writer shaping emotion and pacing. The conversation captures the infectious energy of NYCC as Jane reflects on connecting with fans, celebrating creativity, and keeping the love of comics alive through every medium.

It's the biggest upset of the year - we both like this four episode spin-off of the miserable show What If...?. It's true, this one kinda nails it and does the sort of big comic book worldbuilding we want more of in the MCU, all while killing off a bunch of characters at every twist and turn. Before that: does the Punisher have a Robin? Derek mostly liked that Ed Gein show. Marv Wolfman writes the Teen Titans to be very very mean. And what's the dumbest story in the Bible? In the highly unlikely scenario that you don't care about any of that, skip to 51:27.Next week: HBO's Watchmen TV show rewatch begins!

Episode 83 - Murdock and Marvel: 2012 Part 2 2012 was a year when the big news in comics all happened outside of shops, with movie theaters and social media dominating the industry. This is part 2 of the podcast. that will feature the year in Daredevil, the Spotlight story and the Takeaway for 2012.   The Year in Daredevil  Appearances: Daredevil v3 #6-19, Daredevil: End of Days #1 Fantastic Four #600, New Avengers #19-24 and #30-31, Amazing Spider-Man #677, Punisher #7 and 10, Avengers #24, Avengers vs X-Men #1-4 and #7-9, Avenging Spider-Man #6, Hulk #50, AVX Vs #2, Daredevil Annual #1, Deadpool Kills the Marvel Universe #4, Secret Avengers #33  Writer: Mark Waid (#6-19)  Pencils: Marcos Martin (#6), Paolo Rivera (#7 and #9-10), Kano (#8), Khoi Pham (#10.1 and 13), Marco Checchetto (#11), Chris Samnee (#12, #14-16, and #18-19), Mike Allred (#17)  Inks: Marcos Martin (#6), Joe Rivera (#7 and #9-10), Kano (#8), Khoi Pham (#10.1), Marco Checchetto (#11), Chris Smanee (#12, #14-16 and #18-19), Tom Palmer (#13), Mike Allred (#17)  2012 Begins with the last couple books of the Omege Drive, MegaCrime Organizations and the Mutually Assured Destruction that allowed Daredevil and friends to get out of a sticky situation but also left a target on Daredevil's back.   In February, we get an award winning 1-shot where after Matt Murdock attends a holiday party, he volunteers to take some blind kids on a ski trip. The bus ends up getting into a crash and Daredevil tries to lead the kids out of the cold – but it ends up being the kids that save Murdock and themselves.  In March, we get a two-part story that starts in Amazing Spider-Man #677 called “The Devil and the Details”. In it, we see Peter Parker lamenting his recent breakup with Carlie Cooper, trying to be cool with Black Cat (which goes horrible) and then seeking out Matt Murdock & Daredevil when Black Cat is arrested. She says she's been frames for a break-in at Horizon Labs.    After Black Cat breaks out of police custody, the three locate the inventor of stolen Holographic projector. He's been poisoned and has little time to live. Spider-Man rushes him to a hospital while Black Cat and Daredevil secure the projector from members of Black Spectre and basically removing them as a threat. As a “reward” for helping, Black Cat and Daredevil passionately kiss with Spider-Man looking on and saying one of the best lines ever “I think this is my super villain origin.” They go back to Matt's place but before anything happens – he's called away to the graveyard of his father where some weird things are going on. Specifically, that his and other graves have been emptied.  This leads us into the next story that involves heading underground and a confrontation with Mole Man. Mole Man is stealing coffins to try to find the love of his life Lorna whom he loved as Dr Harvey Elder and wants to be with. Daredevil ultimately “saves” the body of Lorna (and some diamonds) and returns to the surface. Upon going home, he reads a note from Black Cat admitting she was hired to steal the Omega Drive from him – but doesn't and warns him to watch his back  After a 10.1 book that acts as a lead-up, we get a 3-part crossover where Spider-Man, Daredevil, and the Punisher team up in order to protect the Omega Drive from the Megacrime organizations with each book getting part of the story titled “The Omega Effect.” This will be our spotlight story this week.  Next, we get a 1-shot story showing Matt Murdock and Kirsten McDuffie on a date – which goes well until a Black Spectre agent threatens the pair about the Omega Dive. That leads to a giant battle in the middle of Time Square between himself (with the Omega Drive) and the 4 megacrime organizations while the events are broadcast throughout the city. The fight ends with a Black Spectre Agent securing the drive and leaving. Later, Daredevil kicks down the door of Avengers Mansion, where members of the New Avengers - Wolverine, Mockingbird, Spider-Man, Iron Fist, and Luke Cage - are changing out of Black Spectre uniforms and we learn the fight in Time Square was staged and the drive is destroyed.    Turns out there are repercussions for losing Latveria a lot of laundered money and Daredevil is next abducted and being held at Castle Doom in Latveria by the Minister of Bank Chancellor Exchequer Beltran. After a failed escape attempt, Daredevil is eventually rescued by the Avengers but not before some nanobots are injected into Daredevil causing his senses to all but disappear.   Back in America, Hank Pym shrinks to micro size and enters Murdock's brain to fight the nanobots with the guidance of Dr Strange.  Despite some weird readings, Pym successfully destroy all the nanobots and Murdock's senses start to return. Later, Murdock returns to Nelson & Murdock law offices where he's confronted by Foggy Nelson saying he's found Matt's secret – showing him Jack Murdock's remains and boxing gloves in Matt's desk. A stunned Matt tries to tell Foggy he didn't rob his own father's grave, that he's been set up, but Foggy will hear none of it. Foggy tells Matt that they're through until Matt gets the help he needs.  After a flashback story involving Stilt-man, we see Nelson and Murdock still at odds over the remains. Foggy's worries about Matt's mental state are increased because Matt calls him and says Milla Donovan is in apartment unaware of anything bad ever happening to her. Nelson agrees to go to the hospital where Milla was committed if Daredevil will look into a case involving a drug lord Hierra dying and an innocent nurse accused of murder.   The year ends with Foggy telling Matt that he must have hallucinated Milla because he can see her inside her room at the hospital. Daredevil going after one of the drug lords bosses only to suspect Jardeim Salazar himself seemly falls down an elevator shaft trying to escape him. That leads to Daredevil dropping in on the only other Hierra's bosses as he tries to consolidate power – Anthony Tortino. Daredevil tries to warn the men about their common enemy, but things quickly turn south. Daredevil believes it's The Spot who's doing all this and jumps into a circular black portal after Tortino but is knocked out. He awakens to his hands being cuffed behind a post. Daredevil shouts in rage that Spot is a dead man, but the black hands that abducted him pick his detached head and the tormentor introduces himself as Coyote.  This Week's Spotlight: Avenging Spider-Man #6 June 2012 “The Omega Effect Part 1”, Punisher vol 9 #10 June 2012 “The Omega Effect Part 2” and Daredevil vol 3 #11 June 2012 “The Omega Effect Part 3”  Recap Why We Picked This Story Daredevil Rapid Fire Questions The Takeaway It is getting harder to separate comics from culture, to the detriment of the industry and its readers. Avengers: Doomsday Trailer Release Date & Cryptic Photo, DCU Batman Casting Wars, AI Actress INSANE Controversy — Greg Alba & Coy Jandreau go LIVE to break down the latest Marvel & DC news! The Russo Brothers just shared a mysterious “Look Hard…” photo from the Avengers: Doomsday (2026) set, teasing fans with hidden details while a major leak from SFX artist Gi Ponci revealed new suits for the X-Men (Cyclops, Wolverine, Storm, Rogue, Gambit), Fantastic Four (Reed Richards, Sue Storm, Johnny Storm, Ben Grimm), Namor, Thor, Silver Surfer, and even Robert Downey Jr.'s Doctor Doom. On top of that, reports say the Avengers: Doomsday trailer is coming this December, and Channing Tatum is hyping it up as the wildest Marvel movie yet — bigger than Blade's Deadpool & Wolverine cameo! Plus, Ryan Reynolds is reportedly developing his own mutants team-up movie for the MCU's next saga. Meanwhile in the DCU, everyone wants to be Batman — but who has actually gone on record? We'll run down the names fans are buzzing about, while James Gunn teased two unannounced movie scripts, one mystery TV project, and updates on Supergirl. In Marvel TV, Daredevil: Born Again writer Jesse Wigutow revealed a scrapped “bottle episode” pairing Punisher & Echo — would that have worked? Over on Max, Peacemaker Season 2 keeps building toward Superman: Man of Tomorrow and Nicholas Hoult's Lex Luthor, while fans still debate the AI actress Tilly Norwood controversy. And for other wild news: Universal is developing The Mummy 4 with hopes for Brendan Fraser's return (but will audiences embrace it or reject another “old man sequel”?), and Lionsgate is scripting a Samurai Western spin-off in the John Wick Universe. Should Wick expand or bow out gracefully? We're covering it all tonight. Specifically, the alternate dimension showcased throughout Season 2 of Peacemaker is in fact the Nazi-ruled timeline of Earth-X. Subsequently, the "Peaceful Hips" emoji, which is based on a dance sequence from Season 2's opening dance number, has come under intense scrutiny, leading some to speculate that it is in fact a reference to an anti-Nazi Donald Duck short and/or the Nazi swastika. In a statement released via Twitter on Sept. 28, the official Fortnite Status account noted, "We're disabling the Peaceful Hips Emote in Fortnite as we inquire into our partner's creative intentions in this collab emote. Dive into the remarkable transformation of America's longest-running comic book franchise as we explore how Archie Comics evolved from wholesome teenage stories to groundbreaking horror, genre-bending crossovers, and multimedia dominance. The year 2009 marked a pivotal turning point when John Goldwater Jr. took the reins following the passing of the previous leadership. What followed was nothing short of revolutionary—Archie Comics became the first major publisher to embrace same-day digital releases, introduced Riverdale's first openly gay character Kevin Keller, and ventured into mature storytelling with "Life with Archie," which culminated in Archie's heroic death protecting Senator Keller from assassination. Most surprising was Archie's bold foray into horror with titles like "Afterlife with Archie" and "The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina," reimagining these beloved characters in genuinely terrifying scenarios. We examine how these titles weren't merely shock value but thoughtful explorations of the characters' relationships in extreme circumstances. Meanwhile, crossovers with everyone from the Punisher and Predator to KISS and the Ramones demonstrated the remarkable versatility of these iconic characters. What makes Archie's evolution truly fascinating is how these characters function as universal archetypes that work across genres—whether in post-apocalyptic wastelands, mecha anime homages, or multiverse adventures. This adaptability has allowed Archie to remain culturally relevant across multiple generations and media formats, from comics to television hits like "Riverdale" and "Sabrina."The enduring appeal of Archie Comics lies in its representation of an idealized American teenage experience—a nostalgic foundation that, when combined with a willingness to evolve with the times, has enabled this franchise to thrive for nearly a century. Join us as we celebrate how Archie has managed to stay true to its essence while constantly reinventing itself for new audiences and changing times.Subscribe now and share your favorite Archie memories or modern interpretations in the comments!

Andrew Gordon, Tara Erickson, & John Humphrey jump into Fantastic Four: First Steps (2025), Marvel Studios' bold reboot of the First Family. Directed by Matt Shakman and featuring a screenplay by Josh Friedman, Eric Pearson, Jeff Kaplan, and Ian Springer, the film introduces us to Reed Richards / Mister Fantastic (Pedro Pascal — The Last of Us, The Mandalorian), Sue Storm / Invisible Woman (Vanessa Kirby — The Crown, Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning), Johnny Storm / Human Torch (Joseph Quinn — Stranger Things, Gladiator II), and Ben Grimm / The Thing (Ebon Moss-Bachrach — The Bear, The Punisher). They operate in a retro-futuristic 1960s world where science, celebrity, and cosmic danger collide. In First Steps, the Fantastic Four are already established heroes when Reed & Sue reveal they are having a child, setting off both public celebration and personal tension. But everything changes when Silver Surfer (Julia Garner) delivers a warning: Galactus (Ralph Ineson) is coming. With cosmic machinery out of balance, Reed, Sue, Johnny, and Ben must pull together to protect Earth. Key moments include the Silver Surfer's haunting arrival, Galactus' looming threat, the emotional weight of Sue's sacrifices during battle, Johnny's recklessness as the Human Torch, and Ben's struggle with his transformation. The film also features a mid-credits cameo that sets up future MCU conflict. With incredible visuals, strong performances, nostalgic period design, and one of Michael Giacchino's most memorable scores yet, First Steps stakes its claim as a new high point for the franchise. Once again it's time to talk COMIC BOOKS! This isn't sometime I get to do very often, and would not do at all if I were not joined once again by my friend and colleague SCOTT GRENKE who is a long time reader/collector of comic books and I think is an authority on the subject.  Today we are discussing six more iconic Marvel characters. In this episode we discuss: BLADE, THE PUNISHER, BLACK CAT, JUGGERNAUT, JESSICA JONES and GAMBIT!

You've heard those shimmering disco strings in Miley Cyrus's "Flowers," the cinematic arrangements on Phoebe Bridgers' Punisher, and the orchestral flourishes across Taylor Swift's catalog, but you probably didn't know they're all the work of one person: Rob Moose. The violinist and multi-instrumentalist has contributed to nearly 1,000 albums, quietly becoming pop music's most prolific string architect. In this conversation, Moose reveals how he translates classical training into contemporary pop language, working with everyone from Sufjan Stevens to Bon Iver to create arrangements that feel both intimate and epic. We dive into his process, explore how he's reshaped what strings can do in popular music, and uncover the craft behind those arrangements you can't get out of your head.
