In this episode, Coach Mia dives into a mindset that holds a lot of people back: the belief that every meal has to fit a specific category or look a certain way to be considered healthy. She challenges rigid food rules and explains why your body doesn't know the difference between pancakes at 8 a.m. and pancakes at 8 p.m. What matters most is the bigger picture, not whether a food fits into a made-up meal category.Because healthy eating works best when it fits your life, not when it follows a set of arbitrary rules. As always, it is our goal not only to supply you, the listener, with valuable insights on the topics or questions but also to plant some seeds for further research and thought. Your Faith Journey - Finding God Through Words, Song and Praise
Year A – Pentecost 3; Lectionary 11 – June 14, 2026 Pastor Megan Floyd Matthew 9:35 - - 10:23 Grace and peace to you from God, our Creator, from the Holy Spirit, our Sustainer, and from Jesus Christ, who sends us out with compassion to welcome and serve. Amen. *** Last weekend was one of those weekends that reminds me why I love the church. On Saturday, many of us gathered with our neighbors to first worship, and then celebrate at the Pride Festival. We shared smiles, conversations, and reminders that God's love is for all people. Then, on Sunday, we worshiped together here in celebration of Pride Month, giving thanks for the beautiful diversity of God's creation and for the truth that every person bears the image of God. Then this past week, our congregation joined with three other churches for Vacation Bible School. Children filled the church with laughter… and a bit of chaos. Friendships were formed. Stories were shared. Meals were served. New faces became familiar faces. On the surface, Pride celebrations and Vacation Bible School might seem like very different events. But as I reflected on today's Gospel from Matthew, I realized they share something important. Both were acts of hospitality. Both were ways of saying, "There is a place for you here." …and both were opportunities to share the good news of God's love. And that is exactly what Jesus is talking about in today's Gospel. Matthew tells us that Jesus went throughout the cities and villages, teaching, proclaiming the good news of the kingdom, and curing every disease and sickness. Then comes one of the most moving descriptions in all of Scripture: "When he saw the crowds, he had compassion for them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd." Everything that follows… flows from that compassion. Jesus does not look at the crowds and see problems to be solved. He does not see enemies to defeat. He does not see people to judge. He sees people who are hurting. …People who are exhausted. …He sees people who have been pushed aside and wounded by systems of power and oppression. And his heart breaks for them. Jesus was moved by his compassion… to act. And you see, that is where the mission of the church begins. Not with strategy or plans for growth. Nope. The mission of the church… begins with compassion. Except… this is often where we get things wrong. We hear Jesus sending the disciples out… and we immediately think of evangelism as persuasion or recruitment. We imagine that our job is to convince people to come to our church and be part of our community. And this isn't a bad thing… I think our community is absolutely wonderful and I definitely think people should come check us out! But that is not what Jesus sends the disciples to do. In the Roman world, people would have immediately recognized the language of "proclaiming good news." When Rome conquered a territory, messengers would arrive announcing the "good news" that Caesar was now in charge. And… they came backed by military force… carrying the power of empire. …They came with the expectation that everyone would submit. Jesus… sends his followers out in exactly the opposite way. They carry no weapons, and they bring no wealth. …They travel with almost nothing so they must depend on the hospitality of strangers. They cannot force anyone to listen or compel anyone to receive them. They simply arrive… bearing peace… and offer healing. They proclaim that the kingdom of heaven has come near… And then they leave the response up to others. If people receive them, they stay, but if people reject them, they move on. This is such a radically different vision of God's kingdom. …The kingdom of God advances not through coercion but through compassion. Not through domination and force… but through love and hospitality. And perhaps that is why Jesus' words about shaking the dust from their feet can sound so startling. When a town refuses to receive the message, Jesus tells the disciples not to stay and argue. Not to keep fighting. Not to force the issue. Just move on. The good news must be shared. There are too many hurting people to spend all our energy trying to convince those who have already closed their hearts. And then Jesus invokes Sodom and Gomorrah. Now, those names carry a lot of baggage… but I think, especially so, during Pride Month. Many people immediately assume that Sodom and Gomorrah represent God's judgment against LGBTQ+ people. …But Scripture itself tells a different story. The prophet Ezekiel says in chapter 16:49, "This was the guilt of your sister Sodom: she and her daughters had arrogance, excess of food, and prosperous ease but did not aid the poor and needy." The sin of Sodom was not love… It was violence… and exploitation. It was the refusal of hospitality. It was the failure to welcome and care for strangers. It was the absence of compassion. In other words, it was the very opposite of the kingdom Jesus proclaims. Wherever people are dehumanized or rejected… wherever power is used to exclude rather than welcome… in those places… it is appropriate to invoke Sodom and Gomorrah. But wherever compassion, hospitality, and love flourish… in those places… the kingdom of God is drawing near. This week, as many of us celebrated the start of Pride Month, I saw glimpses of that kingdom. I saw people who felt safe and seen. …I saw people free to celebrate who God created them to be. I saw joy… and love and community… I saw reminders that every human being bears the Imago Dei—the image of God. And that matters. Especially in a week when the Southern Baptist Convention voted to further restrict women's leadership in ministry. Such actions stand in stark contrast to the expansive movement of God's Spirit throughout Scripture. After all, look at the people Jesus called. …Fishermen… Tax collectors… Political zealots… men AND women. Jesus called the powerful and the powerless… the respectable and the overlooked. Jesus gathered an astonishingly diverse community of disciples. It matters… not because diversity just is a modern value… but because God's kingdom has always been larger than our categories… and the church is at its best when it reflects the wideness of God's embrace. Because the good news is that God's grace is for ALL people, and that Christ's love is wider than our fears and our divisions. The good news is that every person is created in God's image and invited into God's beloved community. The good news is that wherever there is genuine love, God is already at work. That is the Gospel… and that is why it matters. Because there are still crowds all around us who are harassed and helpless. People longing for belonging… carrying wounds and wondering if they matter… wondering if they are loved… People searching for peace. And Jesus still sees them. …Jesus still has compassion… and Jesus still sends disciples to greet them… disciples of all colors, genders, and sexualities… Jesus still calls them… and sends them to greet the people that Jesus loves. My hope and prayer is that we become the kind of church that reflects the heart of Christ so clearly that people encounter that compassion through us. And honestly, I already see that here… I saw it at Pride… I saw it at Vacation Bible School… I saw it in the friendships that were formed… the meals shared… the laughter all around… and the welcome extended. Every act of hospitality becomes a witness to the kingdom… Every gesture of welcome becomes an act of evangelism… Every reminder that someone is beloved becomes a proclamation of the Gospel. Because evangelism is not primarily about getting people into church. It is about helping people encounter the love of God. And so… Jesus' invitation today is both simple and challenging. …Go… Go with compassion and humility… Go without needing to control the outcome. Go willing to offer hospitality and… and also… Go willing to receive it. Go… and be ready to recognize the image of God in every person you meet. Go beyond the boundaries of your comfort… beyond the limits of your assumptions. Go… trusting that the Holy Spirit is already at work ahead of you. The harvest is still plentiful. There are still people longing for good news. There are still opportunities to embody Christ's love. There are still communities waiting to experience the transforming power of hospitality. And so let us say yes to this mission… yes to compassion. Let us say yes to welcome… and yes to the delight God takes in the diversity of creation. Let us say yes to sharing the good news that God's love is for all people. For the kingdom of heaven has come near. Thanks be to God. Amen.

In this episode, the conversation gets into the sneaky side of restriction. The kind that hides inside wellness culture, clean eating, safe choices, food guilt, and the constant running commentary in your head about what you should or should not eat. And honestly? A lot of it feels so normal that you do not even realize it's happening. There's also a really important conversation about why binge eating does not always come from physical deprivation alone. Psychological restriction matters too. Which is deeply annoying information for anyone who thought eating "enough calories" automatically meant they were healed. Quotes "Restriction lives in rules, not necessarily in the amounts." - Rachelle Heinemann "If there's a constant peanut gallery running on the commentary on whatever you eat, that's restriction." - Rachelle Heinemann "Your body is not necessarily distinguishing between not eating and not letting yourself eat freely." - Rachelle Heinemann "The fear itself is also part of the restrict-binge cycle." - Rachelle Heinemann "Restriction is anything that shrinks your relationship with food and with wanting it." - Rachelle Heinemann "You might have been living with this internally so long that it feels so normal. You might be living among people who are just immersed in wellness or diet culture for so long that it feels normal." - Rachelle Heinemann "The rigidity in your mind creates its own form of deprivation." - Rachelle Heinemann Frequently Asked Questions What counts as restriction if I'm technically eating enough? Restriction is not only about calories or portion sizes. Psychological restriction counts too. Food rules, labeling foods as "bad," mentally negotiating every meal, delaying food until you've "earned it," or constantly trying to control what you eat can all create a restrictive relationship with food. Can restriction cause binge eating? Yes. Restriction is one of the biggest drivers of binge eating. When your body and brain feel deprived, physically or psychologically, it can create intense urges around food that feel chaotic or out of control. Why do I binge even when I wasn't hungry? A binge does not always start from physical hunger. Mental restriction, food rules, stress around eating, and feelings of deprivation can all trigger binge eating, even if you recently ate. What is psychological restriction? Psychological restriction is the mental side of dieting and food control. It includes obsessing over food choices, feeling guilty after eating, constantly planning how to "make up" for food, or believing certain foods are off limits even if you occasionally allow yourself to eat them. Why do I feel obsessed with food all the time? Food obsession is often connected to restriction. When your brain perceives food scarcity, whether through dieting, food rules, or inconsistent eating, it increases focus on food as a survival response. Can food rules lead to binge eating? Yes. Strict food rules often increase feelings of deprivation, which can intensify cravings and lead to binge-restrict cycles. The more rigid the rules become, the more emotionally charged food tends to feel. Why does intuitive eating feel out of control for me? For many people recovering from dieting or disordered eating, jumping straight into intuitive eating without structure can feel overwhelming. Hunger cues and trust around food are often distorted after years of restriction. Consistent, structured eating usually helps rebuild stability first. What is the restrict-binge cycle? The restrict-binge cycle happens when restriction leads to deprivation, obsession with food, urges to binge, guilt afterward, and then renewed attempts to restrict again. The cycle repeats because the restriction itself is often fueling the binge behavior. How do I stop obsessing over food? Usually not through more control. Eating consistently, reducing food rules, allowing flexibility with food, and rebuilding trust with your body can help decrease obsessive thoughts about food over time. Why do I feel guilty after eating certain foods? Food guilt is often learned through dieting, wellness culture, and rigid beliefs about "good" and "bad" foods. When food becomes morally charged, eating certain foods can trigger shame, anxiety, or urges to compensate afterward. Can you recover from binge eating without dieting? Recovery from binge eating usually involves reducing restriction, not increasing it. Healing the relationship with food often requires moving away from rigid dieting behaviors and learning consistent nourishment and flexibility. What are subtle signs of disordered eating? Some subtle signs include constantly thinking about food, avoiding certain foods, anxiety around eating socially, mentally tracking calories or portions, needing to "earn" food, guilt after eating, and feeling out of control around foods you try to restrict. Why do I feel out of control around certain foods? Foods often become more emotionally intense when they are restricted or labeled as forbidden. The feeling of losing control around food is frequently connected to deprivation, not lack of willpower. How do I rebuild trust with food? Trust is rebuilt through consistency. Eating regularly, reducing rigid food rules, working toward flexibility, and creating a more predictable relationship with food can help your brain and body feel safer over time. Baby food should not feel like a trade-off between “quick” and “good”. We sit down with Ed van der Lande, founder of More Toddler Meals, to unpack a deceptively simple question: how do you feed toddlers wholesome meals with real texture and visible ingredients when you are exhausted, out of the house, or racing between nursery pick-ups and work?Ed traces the idea back to a moment on deployment in Somalia, watching his wife carry the full load at home and feeling the friction every parent knows. That frustration turned into an unusual solution: freeze drying. We break down, in plain English, how freeze drying differs from retort and pasteurised pouch foods, why heat can change flavour and texture, and why chewing and oral development matter when little ones are learning to eat. If you care about healthy toddler meals in the UK, convenient baby food, and what “shelf-stable” can look like without turning into puree, this will spark ideas. We also get practical about building a product-based business. Ed shares the leap from British Army major to Amazon, the leadership principles he carried over (high standards, curiosity, customer obsession), and the systems he uses now to keep focus. From home recipe trials and brutally honest feedback to selling at markets, walking into independent retailers, and rethinking online growth, this is a candid look at what it really takes to launch and scale a food brand. If you enjoy the conversation, subscribe, share it with a parent or founder, and leave a review so more people can find the show.Support the show

We are all aware of how busy and distracted life can be. There are hundreds of people, priorities, and pressures competing for our attention every single day. When we look at the ministry of Jesus, we see that despite having limited time and an eternal mission, He consistently slowed down to gather people around tables. Meals became places of connection, formation, restoration, and relationship. Taking His example into the modern world, what does it look like to intentionally create space for Jesus in the middle of chaotic schedules and full lives? How do we prioritize what matters most and build rhythms that keep Jesus at the center of our homes, relationships, and everyday moments?

As we conclude our Sacred Community series, we're left with an important question: What have we actually done with everything we've learned? It's easy to come to church, hear a powerful message, take a few notes, and then let the busyness of life crowd it all out by Monday morning. But God's desire was never for His Word to simply inspire us. His desire is that it transforms us.The early church understood something that modern culture has forgotten. Acts 2:46 tells us that daily they met together in the temple courts and in one another's homes. They celebrated communion, shared meals, and lived life together with joyful hearts and humble spirits. Their faith wasn't confined to a church service. It was woven into their everyday relationships.Today we live in a world that is more connected digitally than ever before, yet more disconnected relationally than perhaps any generation before us. Screens have replaced conversations. Notifications have replaced eye contact. Entertainment has replaced intimacy. We can spend hours scrolling through other people's lives while feeling increasingly isolated in our own.God is calling His Church back to something deeper.Sacred community cannot thrive in isolation. Spiritual maturity doesn't happen apart from relationships. God uses people to sharpen us, challenge us, encourage us, and help us grow. The enemy understands this, which is why he works so hard to isolate believers. Isolation feels safe, but it slowly disconnects us from one of God's greatest tools for growth and healing: each other.Throughout Scripture, tables are significant places. From Abraham sharing a meal with God, to Jesus dining with sinners, to the Last Supper, to the disciples recognizing the risen Christ at the Emmaus table, God repeatedly uses meals and conversations around tables to reveal Himself, build relationships, and transform lives.Jesus did much of His discipleship around tables. He taught, challenged, restored, encouraged, and revealed truth while sharing meals with people. The table wasn't just furniture. It became a place of ministry.Somewhere along the way, many homes traded dining room tables for TV trays. Family conversations gave way to screens and distractions. Vulnerability was replaced with busyness. We stopped making room for one another.Yet many of us can remember a time when tables were the heart of the home. Meals were shared. Stories were told. Prayers were offered. Struggles were discussed. Faith was modeled. Relationships were built. Those moments shaped lives in ways we often don't realize until years later. The call today is simple: Build tables again. Not necessarily more Bible studies. Not another church program. Not another event to attend.Build tables of fellowship.Open your homes. Invite people in. Share meals. Have conversations. Talk about what God is doing. Ask questions. Pray together. Laugh together. Cry together. Walk through life together. The Church gathers in the big house on Sundays, but the work of discipleship often happens in the little houses throughout the week.God is looking for people who will intentionally create spaces where weary people can find rest, broken people can find healing, and believers can encourage one another toward maturity in Christ. The dining room table can become an altar again. The table is where friendships deepen. The table is where faith becomes personal. The table is where generations are shaped. The table is where Jesus often reveals Himself. In a culture of distraction, the table is an invitation back to presence.Maybe the next move of God isn't found in bigger buildings or better programs. Maybe it starts with believers pulling up a few extra chairs, sharing a meal, and making room for one more person at the table. Thanks for joining us for a weekly message from DuBois Light & Life Church. Tim Conway Jr Show Hour 3 (5.29) Conway kicks off the hour with a classic showbiz throwback: when Johnny Carson liked a comedian, he waved them over to the couch — and now Neil gets the couch treatment! Conway also recaps hosting the 2026 ACG Awards Gala, the “Oscars for Business,” celebrating major middle-market companies across Orange County and the Inland Empire. Big shoutout to Consolidated Contracting and all the companies expanding, building, and staying bullish. Then the crew dives into Hawaiian Airlines cutting free hot meals in the Main Cabin on most mainland flights, replacing them with prepaid meals from chef Sheldon Simeon. Conway jokes that Main Cabin is where “the animals” sit, which launches a hilarious conversation about airplane behavior, first-class air rage, fame, privacy, and why being famous may not be worth the headache. Later, the legendary Engelbert Humperdinck, the King of Romance, is coming into the studio at 90 years old with new music. The Foosh grew up on Engelbert and knows all the hits, leading to a perfect game show idea: “Seniors, Name That Tune.” The hour wraps with a look back at the final Carol Burnett Show in 1978, which drew around 30 million viewers, plus a wild Santa Monica story involving a mountain lion roaming the neighborhood before being immobilized. In this episode, we reflect on how Pentecost is more than just an event of the past, but can be an ongoing outpouring of God's love and grace in our lives today. We discuss how the Holy Spirit helps heal our wounds, restores communion with God, and teaches us how to live with power and boldness, even in the places where we feel unable to love the Lord. As we prepare our hearts for Pentecost, we talk practically about cultivating a posture of receptivity, learning to invite the Holy Spirit more deeply into our hearts, and how to allow His fire to illuminate our identity and transform us from within. The Holy Spirit is alive within us, able to enter even the locked places of our hearts, and desires to help us bear much fruit in our lives. (Pope Saint John Paul II, Novo Millennio Ineunte, Paragraph 33) "A noble and delicate soul ... follows faithfully the faintest breath of the Holy Spirit; it rejoices in this Spiritual Guest and holds onto Him like a child to its mother." (The Diary of St. Faustina, Entry 148) Scripture for Lectio: "On one occasion, while he was eating with them, he gave them this command: "Do not leave Jerusalem, but wait for the gift my Father promised, which you have heard me speak about. For John baptized with water, but in a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit." Then they gathered around him and asked him, "Lord, are you at this time going to restore the kingdom to Israel?" He said to them: "It is not for you to know the times or dates the Father has set by his own authority. But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth." After he said this, he was taken up before their very eyes, and a cloud hid him from their sight." (Acts 1:4-9) Sponsor - Mary's Meals: Every mother knows what it's like to want to protect their child and provide for them, to make sure there's food on the table, to make sure her child is safe, cared for, and able to grow into who God created them to be. But for millions of mothers around the world, hunger stands in the way of that hope. Their children walk to school carrying empty bowls, wondering if today they'll have anything to eat. And that's where Mary's Meals steps in. Mary's Meals provides one daily meal in a place of education for children living in some of the world's poorest communities. And that simple meal becomes the reason a child comes to school. Once they're there, everything can begin to change. Education can become a pathway out of poverty. So a child who is hungry can focus. A child who is vulnerable can dream. And a mother who felt helpless can begin to hope again. What we love most about Mary's Meals is how ordinary people get to become a part of that story. We don't have to solve global hunger. We simply have to feed one child. And here's the beautiful thing. It only costs $25.20 to feed a child for an entire school year. That's one child sitting in a classroom instead of sitting at home hungry. One mother experiencing relief instead of worry. One life changed through a simple act of love. So if your hearts are moved to help, we invite you to join us in supporting Mary's Meals. You can head over to their website marysmealsusa.org (or marysmeals.ca for Canada) and together we can offer hope, dignity and a daily meal to a child who needs it most.
