SWANS founder Michael Gira discusses his final orchestrated album "Birthing," his creative process, and plans to transition to a simpler musical approach after decades of creating intense, transcendent live performances. Topics Include: Michael introduces "Birthing" as SWANS' final orchestrated album. Future SWANS work will be much simpler. He's 71 and finds intense performances physically demanding. No clear vision yet for his next musical phase. SWANS will tour US in October, then Europe. He finds Australian tours difficult due to jet lag. Triple vinyl/double CD includes concert film and documentary. Marco Porzia filmed the SWANS documentary. Christopher Nicholson filmed a solo performance in Norway. Great shows happen when "the music plays us." Natural venue acoustics enhance the performance experience. Songs transform and lengthen throughout tours. One song evolved to 82 minutes during tour. Three-hour sets leave performers exhausted afterward. Songs begin on acoustic guitar before band elaboration. He listens to guitar sound hole to hear potential harmonics. Directs band through gestures during live performances. The recording happened immediately after European tour ended. Uses same old Guild acoustic guitar for decades. Vinyl editions required some song edits for length. Gira doesn't listen to much music anymore. He art directs all SWANS releases personally. Created unique limited editions with handmade elements. Has done crowdfunding since 2000 for recording budgets. Once recorded personalized songs for top contributors. Will miss the elation of building live crescendos. No current plans for more fiction writing. Reluctant to write autobiography despite family encouragement. Can mentally play entire album from memory. Recently rediscovered early Led Zeppelin's brilliance. Order the SWANS LP "Birthing" here. Released in June, the Swans's 16th record, The Beggar, finds the group continuing to push boundaries, even as most of their contemporaries have either seen fit to rest on their laurels or pack it in. This episode of Across The Margin : The Podcast features an interview with singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, author, and artist Michael Gira. Gira is the founder of the band Swans, in which he sings and plays guitar. He is also the founder of Young God Records and previously fronted Angels of Light. The focus of this episode is on Swans latest release, a terrific album entitled The Beggar. Michael Gira founded the groundbreaking NYC band Swans in 1982. Initially notorious for their relentless, brutal, high-volume onslaughts of sound, the extreme, abject imagery of Gira's lyrics, and his thundering vocals, Swans latest album, The Beggar, is a sprawling, sonically dizzying, and thought-provoking work of art that showcases the extreme abilities of a legendary frontman and band that somehow still sounds at the height of their talents. In this episode host Michael Shields and Michael Gira discuss the themes abounding in The Beggar and the influence Argentine author Jorge Luis Borges had on the album. They give a hat tip to the talented instrumentalists that were part of the project while exploring how birthing The Beggar during the pandemic affected the entirely captivating work of art. They dig into the ins-and-outs of the 44 minute track on the album entitled “The Beggar Lover” (Three)” where, in the episode, Michael reads a section of poetry found within the all-encompassing journey of a track. They also talk about what to expect from the upcoming tour, how Jim Morrison has inspired Michael throughout his life, and a whole lot more. Hosted on Acast. Michael Gira's 37 year old Swans are moving into a post Seer/To Be Kind era, and if 2019's Leaving Meaning was an underappreciated collection of great songs, The Beggar is a more coherent (two hour long) album length statement as to what that looks like. Some of the most direct and powerful lyricism of his career, amongst what accounts to almost easy listening in this bands catalogue, with plenty of acoustic-led and pretty tracks, with deep existential lyrics. We'll still touch base with medieval torture music and have a forty-four minute long track, naturally. Still one of the best and most interesting rock bands on earth, in a period of transition.

Ahora me siento bastante optimista.

SWANS is an experimental rock band, who have been making unconventional music since 1982. Their music requires somewhat of an investment to appreciate. SWANS music will often take you to the far reaches of the human condition and the human psyche, always leaving the door open to interpretation, even when the lyrics seem clear about the idea, after listening to it enough the music can often change what you think the words mean. They have been known to play acoustic shows, in tiny venues with arena size sound systems that are so loud that I often wondered how they could produce the sounds on instruments like that. I got to speak to Michael Gira about the new album "The Beggar" which takes a very different turn from the typical music we have gotten from them. This album is full of more chimes and bells, and a "Joyeous" choral experience, almost like what you would hear in an English Abby, at full throttle intensity. This album is the kind of music you would enjoy listening to as the world is coming to an abrupt end knowing it will melt away into a supernova in a few hours, you want this album as your solace. I was in awe at the opportunity to speak to Michael Gira, and I was more often than not surprised at the answers he gave me. A very down to earth, and deep thinker, he shocked me at some of the things he had to say. No matter what you think you know about him, you are going to be surprised at how humble a legend can be. website facebook#swans #experimentalrock #michaelgira #thebeggar #noisemovement

I've got a great episode of Side Projects here! Michael Gira of Swans returns to talk about their latest album, The Beggar. Swans never got to tour their last album, Leaving Meaning. So The Beggar, while not a continuation of Leaving Meaning, does have some connections to it. It also means that Swans, who are not known for looking back, reminiscing, and playing older songs from their back catalog, will be playing music from Leaving Meaning AND The Beggar, plus possibly a NEW song or two. Michael has not only created another powerhouse of an album, but he also threw me for a loop when I read the credits and realized that there are a bunch of podcast guests on it, like Dana Schecter, Lucy Kruger, and Laura Carbone. Michael discusses how he met Lucy & Laura and how he visualizes new music and who he invites to participate on the albums. Speaking of writing, he also tells me why repetition is important to him and that while the isolation of Covid may have ruined his touring plans, it really didn't change his writing style at all. What did influence the album, though, was the sequencing. Sequencing was the spark that caused him to write the epic track The Beggar Lover. And I wrap everything in a nice bow by messing up the questions I have about the album cover art. You'll see what I mean. Order the album from https://younggodrecords.com/ or Bandcamp. Well, how about we kick this off with Jarboe! Yes, the one! The lady who certainly changed Michael Gira's life and Swans' sound. Who released an awesome collab with Neurosis and so much more! There is also a very up-to-date-reason for this interview - the re-release of one of her seminal solo-releases: Sacrificial Cake which originally was released nearly 30 years ago. At a time, when it was considered to be a twin-record to Gira's Drainland (there were even some promo CDs sent out with tracks from both records). The record is mindblowingly different and diverse and doesn't shy away from tracks that at first glance don't fit in with the tracks before or after. Nevertheless, there is one thing that connects them all - Jarboe's voice and musical quality. We talked with her in detail about the record, its songwriting and production, the influence of New York City and much much more! We are very proud to kickstart our hearty VoS-Xmas-Interview-Marathon with this nearly one-hour long interview which you can listen to here straight away or on the streaming platform of your choice: You can also grab your copy of the re-release of Sacrificial Cake via The Circle Music! It was recorded at New York's Brooklyn Recording and Richmond's Montrose Recording, produced by JD Foster, and features Chris Cochrane, Marc Ribot, Dave Schramm on guitar as well as well as singer songwriter Sam Phillips on harmonies. Eszter has been very busy for the past few years. In 2014 she was making progress gathering material for the new album when out of the blue-after a long hiatus from acting she was offered a part she couldn't refuse. She agreed to star in a six-episode arc of Louis C.K.'s F/X series Louie, Season 4, a performance which would earn her considerable critical praise. Eszter also improvised compositions, sang and played violin for the episodes which featured her performance. As soon as filming wrapped, Eszter returned to work on her album. Eszter starred in Jim Jarmusch's classic Stranger than Paradise, and was featured in Steve Buscemi's Trees Lounge, and worked alongside Mia Farrow and John Malkovich in Woody Allen's Shadows and Fog, among other film appearances. She continues, “In 1995, while living in Los Angeles, I decided to fully devote my artistic energies to music-making and words writing, more specifically to becoming a performing and recording songwriter. I have two albums out, Flicker (1999) and Mud (2004), both produced by JD Foster, who has made wonderful records with Richard Buckner and Marc Ribot among many others, which were both received with critical praise. “I have since been fortunate enough to have been asked to lend my violin playing and singing to works by people I consider true artists, most notably guitarist Marc Ribot, and Michael Gira of Swans fame,” Eszter can be heard on violins on two Angels of Light albums as well as Swans' The Seer, and on vocals and other instruments on multiple Marc Ribot projects including Ceramic Dog's Your Turn, – a band she was a guest member of through 2009 – and on an upcoming album of Mr. Ribot's songs. Jarboe in conversation with David Eastaugh https://www.thelivingjarboe.com Jarboe described herself as "obsessed" with Swans since hearing their first album, Filth (1983). She came into contact with Michael Gira and attended the band's practice sessions before, after several auditions, joining as a vocalist and keyboardist and debuting on Greed(1986). Prior to Swans, Jarboe's musical background had consisted of training as a jazz and choral vocalist.

This week we're discussing every album by Swans from 1982-1986. Led by the unpredictable and immensely talented Michael Gira (and accompanied by long-time collaborators Norman Westberg and Jarboe), Swans is a band that can't possibly be described in a paragraph. Their musical range is unprecedented and continues to evolve today. However, this era of the band made some of the most punishing, brutal, and disturbing music ever made. Unlike anything and truly barbaric. Cue the heavy breathing into the microphone, because we're getting into a band that will send even the most open-minded person running for the hills. It's the critically acclaimed 2012 album 'The Seer' by experimental noise-rock band Swans. This double-disc record that spans over two hours evokes the sounds of hell, apocalyptic visions, indoctrination by the occult, and the feeling of the serial killer gradually getting closer - but also manages to find moments to be beautiful and wondrous. We had a lot of fun with this one; Austin is trying to make sense of the whole thing, and Alex loves watching the reaction to it all. Alex also tells the story of meeting Michael Gira after a show in Cincinnati - the man who once stepped on the fingers of audience members and pulled their hair is now a friendly old man with a cowboy hat...he even signed my 'To Be Kind' vinyl!

Literary horror icon Brian Evenson is on the show! We talk about: the uncanny psychogeography of Utah, religious text & parables, writing as a replacement for spirituality, Brian’s philosophical approach, the machinations of Dark Properties, Michael Gira’s The Consumer, the trancelike intensity of the Soundtrack for the Blind by the Swans, Sunn O))), and Pierre Guyotat's writing, Deleuze and Guattari, the Evensonesque aesthetic and trajectory, our loss of agency to technology, distortion/blur, the appeal of invoking destabilization, Immobility, the relationship between the mode of horror and mood, being a mentor, comfort listening.... “There is not a more intense, prolific, or apocalyptic writer of fiction in America than Brian Evenson.” —George Saunders “Missing persons, paranoia and psychosis . . . the kind of writer who leads you into the labyrinth, then abandons you there. It’s hard to believe a guy can be so frightening, so consistently.” —New York Times Brian Evenson is the author of over a dozen works of fiction. He has received three O. Henry Prizes for his fiction. His most recent book, Song for the Unraveling of the World, won a Shirley Jackson Award and was a finalist for both the Los Angeles Times Ray Bradbury Prize for Science Fiction, Fantasy, and Speculative Fiction and the Balcones Fiction Prize. He lives in Los Angeles and teaches at CalArts. THE GLASSY, BURNING FLOOR OF HELL comes out in August 2021 by Coffee House Press - preorder here. A sentient, murderous prosthetic leg; shadowy creatures lurking behind a shimmering wall; brutal barrow men―of all the terrors that populate The Glassy, Burning Floor of Hell, perhaps the most alarming are the beings who decimated the habitable Earth: humans. In this new short story collection, Brian Evenson envisions a chilling future beyond the Anthropocene that forces excruciating decisions about survival and self-sacrifice in the face of toxic air and a natural world torn between revenge and regeneration. Combining psychological and ecological horror, each tale thrums with Evenson’s award-winning literary craftsmanship, dark humor, and thrilling suspense. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/wake-island/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/wake-island/support

Jarboe is a singer-songwriter multi instrumentalist and painter, who came to prominence as a member of the band Swans. She was born in Mississippi, and raised in New Orleans, Which along with her FBI father helped define her early musical ideas. The Swans first album, Filth (1983) mesmerized Jarboe, and as a result, she sought out Swans founder Michael Gira. Jarboe joined as a vocalist and keyboardist and debuted on the 1986 album Greed. Jarboe left Swans in 1997 and embarked on a solo career, releasing records including Sacrificial Cake and Anhedoniac. She has continued to self-release solo albums and, in 2012 recorded vocals for two tracks on the Swans' album, The Seer. Like most performers, Jarboe's last tour was cancelled, but she continues to captivate her audience with her recordings and paintings.

Michael Gira of Swans is a truly iconoclastic musician that has created music that hits the extremes of the spectrum - the darkest, the most abrasive and explosive sounds you can imagine, through to the most ethereal otherworldly music. Swans cuts through all your blood and gristle to your heart and bones. Their new album Leaving Meaning leans to the light; a super cinematic piece that you can feel on a visceral level. The record is a shining example of why SWANS have remained a vital evolving animal.  Watch my video interviews: https://www.youtube.com/thevoidwithchristina

Cold Specks is the stage name of Canadian singer-songwriter Ladan Hussein (who was previously known as Al Spx). I got to hang out with her when she was touring her second record, Neuroplasticity. We met at Vancouver's Imperial venue and we couldn't find a quiet place to chat. While looking for an appropriate spot, I walked right into a glass door, so things started on an embarrassing (but funny) note. In which strange room did we end up having the interview? Which song from Neuroplasticity is like a baby to Cold Specks? What is the cool story behind her stage name? Why does Ladan want to stop people from calling her music "doom soul"--even though she invented the term? What was it like working with the legendary Michael Gira from Swans? What does Ladan not like to talk about in interviews? What song from the first record does Cold Specks still perform live? Which song did Cold Specks perform live, for the first time, after attending a Ferguson protest in Seattle? You'll have to listen to find out. This year, Cold Specks released a third record, Fool's Paradise, and you can catch Ladan and her band tour the new album. You won't regret it! Tracks played on the radio edit of the show... 1) Cold Specks, Neuroplasticity (2014) "Absisto" 2) Cold Specks, Neuroplasticity (2014) "Bodies At Bay" 3) Cold Specks - Reeling The Liars In (Swans cover, YouTube rip) (Live @ Hoxton Hall, London, 20.06.12) ** 4) Cold Specks, I Predict a Graceful Expulsion (2012) "Blank Maps" 5) Cold Specks, Neuroplasticity (2014) "A Season of Doubt" ALL songs CANCON, except **

“All my storms”, de Marem Ladson. Contacto UFI: Web / Facebook / Twitter

I didn’t recognize Eszter Balint’s name when I got a PR pitch about her Airless Midnight, but I the record a quick listen anyway and shot her representation a note about getting her on the show. Lucky for me, the musician has the sort of backstory press release writers kill for, the daughter of experimental theater troupe members who moved her and the theater from Budapest to New York at an early age, putting her at the epicenter of the city’s late-70s avant garde scene. In 1984, friendships with musicians John Lurie and Richard Edson led to a leading role in Jim Jarmusch’s pioneering Stranger Than Paradise, with roles in Woody Allen’s Shadows and Fog and Steve Buscemi’s Trees Lounge following (along with a lesser-cited Miami Vice appearance). Disillusioned with acting, Balint dove headfirst into a musical career that found her collaborating with a wide range of musical visionaries, from Michael Gira to Marc Ribot, along with the release of two critically acclaim solo records more than a decade apart. 2014 also saw an unexpected return to acting, as Louis CK cast Balint as his violin-playing Hungarian neighbor in Louie. Balint was kind enough to sit down at a Manhattan cafe to cram as much of her fascinating life as possible into an hour-long interview.
