Metalheads!! Gabe has picked for August the new album from Zeal & Ardor, a band whose previous album was an album we picked as an album of the year. Will this one be of similar quality?
A month to the day the Nine Circles Audio Thing is back with our Album of the Month for August! The staff approached, their pitiful, mewling offerings raised with trembling hands in full view of the gnarled stonework to vie for the attentions and affections of the new Judge. But despite Hera's impassioned plea for the acidic sludge post metal of Norna, Angela's sadly tossed asides poetics to the virtue of black metal chameleons Zeal & Ardor, Colin's progressive medieval circus ride that is the latest from Sur Austru and Ian's gleeful presentation of the blackened speed thrash attack of Demiser the Demiser's Demiser the rose could only be gifted to one. And that one was Chris, who revelled in the hyper-glitchy grind punk noise rock of Melt-Banana, back with their first album in 11 years 3+5, a blizzard of wonder that races by in only 24 minutes. The gang gets in deep, with lots of talk about vocal tics and tremors, the increasingly silly labelling and confining our notions of what constitutes "heavy" or "extreme", and whether we can all kill Hera if we make her listen to enough thrash metal. There's also a lot of talk about what else we listened to in August, including a way too long conversation about how positively limp and punched in the long awaited(?) Time II from Wintersun is...you've been warned! 9C LINKS: Website | Facebook | Twitter (X) | Instagram

My guest on the podcast this week is Manuel Gagneux, mastermind behind Swiss avant-garde black metal band Zeal & Ardor. Z+A mix the style of European Black Metal (a genre notorious for it's link with racism) and elements of African-American Spirituals and Gospel and lyrically poses the question: What if the freed slaves had embraced Satan? We talked about the band's unlikely beginnings on the darkest parts of the internet, black magick, reappropriating Richard Wagner and as ever: Manuel's dream festival.
In this series of Skin Tings, Skin focuses on some of the up-and-coming talents that are catching her attention, and that she think you need to be aware of too! In this episode, Skin is joined by Manuel from Zeal & Ardor to talk about his place in the Swiss heavy metal scene, how an unfortunate brush with racism actually helped start the new project, and how his music addresses politics.
This week we review two self-titled metal albums, Ode & Elegy and Zeal & Ardor.
Eric, Evan and Dan return to review the self-titled, third studio album from Zeal & Ardor. What does the band sound like? Grab a fistful of blues and sprinkle in some gospel. Then add in a healthy portion of black metal. Now you've got yourself a musical stew unlike anything you've ever heard before. Zeal & Ardor tracks previewed on this episode include: "Death to the Holy" "Golden Liar" "Götterdämmerung" Next up, Eric reviews the Neutral Full Spectrum CBD Beard Oil from Beard Octane. He also rates their Neutral Full Spectrum CBD Lathering Conditioning Wash. These products come at a premium price. But are they worth it? You'll have to tune on in to find out! Finally, the boys briefly discuss the difference between West Coast IPAs and Hazy IPAs. Eric proceeds to review Sparkle Wolf by Modern Times Beer and Dan rates Moon Howler by Fulton Beer. Oh, and Evan drinks Easy Eddy by Big Grove Brewery. It was in his fridge. What will the boys review next? Give us a follow and find out. In the meantime, enjoy this episode and take care of yourself!

Turn it up to 11, crack open that beer, it's about to get BREWTAL! https://linktr.ee/brewtal This week's episode features Leper Shepherd from Metallic Hardcore Outfit Take Life Bio: "A collaborative effort between vocalist/lyricist Rob Fusco (One King Down, Most Precious Blood, Recon) and Rafe Holmes (Insvrgence), Take Life is the focus of decades of metal/hardcore songwriting experience and unbridled expression. Boasting the feral, frenetic musical energy of bands like Kiss It Goodbye and Burnt By The Sun and the scathing lyrical content and emotive vocal performances which have been Fusco's trademark, Take Life sets itself apart from modern formulaic metalcore acts and opts to take creative risks with little regard for current trends. Their inaugural effort, YOU ARE NOWHERE, was produced, mixed, and mastered by legendary metalcore mastermind RANDY LEBOEUF and is slated for digital release worldwide on 2.11.22. The vinyl version of YOU ARE NOWHERE will be released by Translation Loss Records, and its visual elements, layout, and logo have been produced and designed by graphics veteran Mike Wohlberg who has garnered respect through his work for bands like Cannibal Corpse, The Acacia Strain, and Dying Fetus." What Take Life are drinking: "We don't drink, but we're all about raising a bottle of seltzer or can of Yerba Mate with anyone regardless of what they like to enjoy." This week's Beer Breakdown include Texas Beer Company's Hoppy Duck IPA (Todd's Pick) and 18th Street Brewing Company's Cradle to the Grave Red Velvet Inspired Pastry Stout (Arie's Pick). With Hell Bent For Metal finally able to do an in person interview, Tom goes to Durham to meet singer, drummer, and trans pioneer in the metal scene, the metal as hell Kat Shevil Gillham. They discuss what playing heavy metal means to Kat, how the scene has changed, and how she is quite happy to piss off people who need it.The ferocious 'All Hail The New Flesh' by Strapping Young Lad is this week's Camp Classic, which gives the hosts a chance to reminisce about a great band, and also explain why this song reminds them of that guy who just wants everything in him.Plus the mops are on standby in the Hate Crew Gaybar, as froth is expected about Zeal & Ardor's self-titled album, Metanoia by Persefone, and The Long Road North by Cult Of Luna.
An enormous month for expansive albums demands a big episode, as our February reviews hit huge records from Venom Prison, Zeal & Ardor, Korn, Cult of Luna, Rolo Tomassi, Gregor Barnett, Tuskar, and Immolation, and tries to turn over every bit of rock beef these weeks have thrown at us.
Nach dem Coup 2019, als Big Thief mit 2 Alben in nur 1 Jahr die Jahresbestenlisten aller Medien stürmten, kommt jetzt schon wieder ein Doppelpack: «Dragon New Warm Mountain I Believe in You» ist 20 Songs stark, von traditionell über psychedelisch bis minimalistisch. Big Thief können alles. Plus: Neue Platten von Spoon, Alt-J, Zeal & Ardor, Shamir, Egopusher und Newdad.
And the big releases keep coming! Merl and Steve sift through some absolute bangers this week as we discuss whether the new Zeal & Ardor album has brought Manuel Gagneux's vision to new heights, whether Cult Of Luna's The Long Road North is up to their usual impeccable standards, how Amorphis have proved they're folk metal's most reliable band with Halo and why Bloodywood may have just dropped the funnest album of 2022.Buy the latest issue of Metal Hammer at bit.ly/buyhammer

Starting out life as a solo project for Swiss avante-garde musician Manuel Gagneux, Zeal & Ardor's rapid rise over the years has seen the one man project blossom into a fully fledged band, although still ably led by Gangneux. The band is on the precipice of releasing their third and self titled album On February 11, with Zeal & Ardor finally looking set to become a household name. While their music has always had its niche fan base due to its eclectic yet brilliant nature, Zeal & Ardor looks set to catapult the band into the mainstream of music, despite still being full of eccentricities and music that is far from accessible on a wider spectrum.Gagneux joined HEAVY to talk about the upcoming album and the rise and rise of a band that was never meant to be anything more than a solo vehicle for its main protagonist."We just wanted to continue our atmospheric thing that we had going on,” he began, “but still have enough leeway to try new avenues. I think it's our most aggressive album yet, but it still has our vibe if that makes any sense."Being Zeal & Ardor's third album, the next logical question is why Gagneux felt now was the right time to name an album after the band."One aspect of it was we had loads of time to work on stuff the last two years because something happened, obviously,” he laughed. “We kind of got to reflect on what it is that makes us sound like us and we cut a lot of fat. Once we figured that out, we could explore other avenues. The other thing is perhaps maybe, a little bit, we couldn't come up with a better title (laughs).”In the full interview, Manuel talks about how important this album is in the overall scheme of the band and its music, the singles released so far and how they reflect on the album as a whole, writing and performing all of the music himself, mixing German and English lyrics together on parts of the album and the significance of doing so, expanding into a full band from a solo project and the reasons why, the universal appeal of Zeal & Ardor and why he thinks the band resonates on so many levels, future plans and more.

We had the pleasure of interviewing Zeal & Ardor over Zoom video! Zeal & Ardor's widely praised second album, Stranger Fruit, was released by MVKA in 2018, following the global attention-getting, multi-million streamed debut Devil Is Fine. Critically acclaimed across the industry, The Guardian newspaper described Stranger Fruit as "extraordinary and brilliant" upon release. Upset wrote it was "a compelling listen," Metal Hammer applauded its "sheer musical brilliance," with Rock Sound concluding, it was "one of the most uniquely daring and wholly affecting albums of 2018 so far," plus further plaudits rolling in from SiriusXM, Rolling Stone, Kerrang!, Noisey, Alternative Press, Revolver, Pitchfork, Stereogum, and more. By Christmas 2018, the UK's largest free newspaper Metro declared Stranger Fruit their #2 Album of the Year in a cross-genre list, declaring "in this jaw-dropping meld of black American folk music and black metal, the Swiss artist Manuel Gagneux has hit upon something genuinely original." In March 2019, following a blistering set in London the previous December, the band went on to release the double live album Live In London. Then, in October 2020, amidst a provocative and stimulating 18-month profound period of reflection — that led to the writing of the forthcoming self-titled album — the band quietly shared the striking, standalone 6-track EP Wake Of A Nation. Their intense third album, crystalizing everything the band is, will be released in February 2022. We want to hear from you! The black metal, blues, and African American fusion of Zeal & Ardor's music is the brainchild of musician Manuel Gagneux. He moved from his native Switzerland to New York, and took up the moniker Zeal & Ardor, having previously released music under the name Bird mask. After a tumultuous start to the year 2020, Gagneux could not hold his tongue and released the crushing EP titled 'Wake of a Nation'. This EP and episode are the results of atrocities that were committed earlier in the year 2020. Please consider donating to https://www.joincampaignzero.org/ or your charity of choice. 2020! It's been a strange one. We may not have had many gigs to go to but there's been some absolutely brilliant music helping us all through, so, as with every year, here's our annual best of the year episode!Over the next 2 hours (Longest episode yet!) we'll count down our favourite 30 songs of the year, plus we'll also discuss songs we've discovered this year that weren't released in 2020, and a few songs that narrowly missed out on being included. We've changed the voting system a little this year with the help of our friend Peter Latimer who is a maths genius. (you'll often find him stood near the mixing desk at Slowdive gigs inputting the setlist into an excel spreadsheet to predict which song will be the set closer)...We've each chosen our 10 favourite songs of the year and sent them over to Ian's wife Lydia, who put the playlists together and distributed them, so we were each given a playlist of the 20 songs from the other two hosts, along with our own 10. We then ranked the playlists in order of preference and sent them to Colin's wife Helen, who totalled up the points and worked out the order. Helen also joined us on the episode to read out the countdown, which we found out as we recorded so all reactions are genuine. Now, admittedly, in parts we're a little bit brutal to some of the songs in the list as we're three separate people with differing music tastes, but please remember that to be in this episode at all the songs have to have been in one of our top 10's of the year. The playlist of 20 songs from the other two hosts was scored as usual, our favourite song got 20 points, counting down incrementally to our least favourite which got 1 point. The scoring of our own list of 10 is now slightly more complicated in order to give a truer level of points to our own favourites. So rather than them only being able to score as many points as our 10th favourite in the other list, the points in our own list were distributed as follows -1st place - 20 points2nd place - 18 points3rd place – 16 points4th place – 14 points5th place – 12 points6th place – 9 points7th place – 7 points8th place – 5 points9th place – 3 points10th place -1 pointPeter had also suggested a method to avoid so many songs with identical scores, but it was particularly complicated so we decided that we weren't that bothered about songs in joint positions!Bands featured in this episode include (In alphabetical order, no spoilers here!) - Fiona Apple, Arab Strap, Astrel K, The Avalanches, Bell Witch Phoebe Bridgers, Bully, Caspian, Code Orange, Dark Globes, Dystopian Future Movies, Epic45, The Flaming Lips, Ghostpoet, Honey Harper, The Hell, Jonathan Hulten, Huntsmen, Ihsahn, I LIKE TRAINS, Jesu, Johannes & Farkosten, Lanterns On The Lake, Major Parkinson, Nada Surf, Orville Peck, Peel Dream Magazine, Молчат Дома, Porridge Radio, Royksopp & Robyn, Sleep Token, The Slow Summits, Squarepusher, Such Small Hands, Taylor Swift, Thank You Scientist, Ulver, Vernon Jane, Bob Vylan, Watkins Family Hour, Waveform*, A.A.
Conduce y produce: Diego A Garzon-Forero

Swiss musician Manuel Gagneux is the lead singer, guitarist, and mind behind the new rising band Zeal & Ardor, where he combines elements of black metal, electronic, and traditional black American music. Manuel talks with Looker and Lamar about the problem with calling artists "problematic", Negro spirituals, and his personal relationship with Satanism.
"It's kind of an expansion of the first album that probably nobody ever heard about or listened to," offered Manuel Gagneux, driving force behind the enigma that is Zeal & Ardor ahead of the release of his second album, Stranger Fruit. "I'm pretty fucken proud of it and I hope you enjoy it too."No stranger to controversy over his thought-provoking and brutally honest lyrics, Gagneux refuses to apologize for his content, evoking an emotion through his music that almost dares you to ignore his message."It's hard to convey how I create that emotion," he measured, "because in a conversation like this it splits into a jovial conversation but I can't really get into what I felt like making the album now because that would ruin the whole vibe of this chat..."In a refreshingly honest and uncensored chat, Manuel discusses the intricacies of the album and the meaning behind the title and artwork, as well as just what his objectives are with Zeal & Ardor. He talks about his beliefs on censorship versus honesty and also has an interesting tale to tell of being punched in the face because of his music.Stranger Fruits is out June 8
