n this raw and revelatory episode, we welcome back the legendary rock icon Wino—the voice and soul of The Obsessed. He dives deep into the creation of his new solo album, sharing the spirit and stories behind the music. Wino also gives us the latest on Ritual Arcana, Sharlee's tarot card - inspired band they are planning on playing out and releasing a full album of crushing tunes soon.We talk songwriting, surviving the scene, and his summer mission: writing the next full-length album for The Obsessed. Expect riffs, honesty, and that gravelly wisdom only Wino can bring.Wino's influence on heavy music runs deep. Starting in the late '70s, he formed The Obsessed in Maryland—a band that became foundational to the American doom metal scene. Their debut album (self-titled, released in 1990) delivered massive, Sabbath-inspired riffs with Wino's unmistakable gravel-throated vocals. After The Obsessed first disbanded, Wino went on to front Saint Vitus, pushing doom into darker and heavier territory. He later played in Spirit Caravan, The Hidden Hand, Premonition 13, and collaborated with artists like Scott Kelly (Neurosis) and Steve Von Till. The Obsessed reformed in the 2010s with renewed force, releasing Sacred in 2017 and continuing to tour and record. In this episode, Wino speaks with honesty and grit about where he's headed musically—and he's not slowing down. Whether you're a doom veteran or just discovering this chapter of heavy history, you'll want to hear what he has to say.https://www.new-terms.comhttps://www.youtube.com/@UCH7CXyinupEo5BfQYbJV11g https://open.spotify.com/artist/4YumqLcvnU9DW31AkzaviJ

Coming up in the chaotic Massachusetts crust punk scene, Terry Savastano dreamed of playing heavier and slower. Much slower. Affirmed by the likes of Black Sabbath, Saint Vitus, and Winter, Savastano recruited his bandmates in Disrupt to explore this vastly uncharted territory. With a name that feels more like a mission statement, this new band evoked complete anguish and despair both aesthetically and sonically. This is especially evident on their debut full-length, an under-appreciated classic in its time that helped paved the way for others to tune low and play slow. Interview by Kris PetersUK metal outfit Orange Goblin are a band who has had to work hard for everything they have. Bloody hard.Formed in 1995 and born into a musical landscape already dominated by bands such as Black Sabbath, Trouble, Saint Vitus, The Obsessed, Pentagram, Cathedral, Danzig, Monster Magnet and Kyuss, Orange Goblin spent many of their formative years deflecting criticism of their sound, defiant in the knowledge that while a sum of their many influences, they were also a force unto themselves.Combining elements of hard rock, stoner rock, doom metal and more, comparisons to the legendary bands listed above were bound to be prominent, but over the course of nine previous albums Orange Goblin have left their indelible mark across the music world, in the process gaining the respect and level of acceptance they so rightfully deserve. That growth and progression promises to continue on Orange Goblin's upcoming album Science, Not Fiction, which will be unleashed on July 19. Blending the aforementioned genres with some outside of the box, Science, Not Fiction is an aggressive, adrenaline-fuelled sonic journey of a band with one eye on the past but the focus firmly on the future.HEAVY caught up with founding member and vocalist Ben Ward to find out more."This one's different," he measured. "Obviously, it's our first album for Peaceville Records and the whole campaign has been far more hands on than we've ever had before. In the past we might have just delivered the record to the label and said right, you get on with that, but with this record the label have been really proactive and enthusiastic in getting us to be involved in the marketing. It's been a really strong campaign. There's been three singles released so far and all had videos for them. We've got another video and single coming just prior to the release. We're doing some album launch shows here in London and Leeds in the UK and we've got a summer of festivals lined up to promote it. It's all go at the moment. We're definitely not sitting back and letting it happen. We're all very proactive."In the full interview, Ben discussed Orange Goblin's upcoming album release more, including the musical influences, proactive marketing campaign, and impact of a new band member. He provided insights into the album concept, highlighting the significance of science, spirituality, and religion. The discussion also touched on the balance between imitation and inspiration in creating an album, with Ben emphasizing the band's commitment to creating music that is interesting to them and their belief in the importance of honesty in their music.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

Have you ever wanted to hear all the heavy in one place? From its origins onward? After the untimely passing of Eric Wagner (Trouble, The Skull), one of doom metal's most notable and esteemed singers and songwriters, The Skull bassist and bandleader, Ron Holzner, contemplated long and hard on whether it would be possible to carry on. Nine months and a lot of soul searching later, an idea was born. Alongside guitarist Lothar Keller (The Skull, Sacred Dawn) and drummer Henry Vasquez (The Skull, Saint Vitus, Blood Of The Sun),  vocalist Karl Agell (Corrosion Of Conformity, Blind, Leadfoot, Lie Heavy) as well as vocalist Scott Reagers (Saint Vitus) and riff master general, guitarist Victor Griffin (Death Row, Pentagram, Place Of Skulls). And so LEGION OF DOOM has come to exist with an all-star lineup of doom's most prestigious figureheads, here to share their ultimate heavy truth, taking the genre from what is known into uncharted territories. Recalls Holzner, “I decided I want to honor the memory of Eric by playing songs that he crafted. I want his spirit to become eternal through his words and melody. And I also want to play songs from the catalogs of everyone involved.” Ron and Karl join Vernomatic and Metal Walt and share the process of how and why this much deserved project came about. The four discuss the history of all the members in this band and how it all ties together with the late Eric Wagner.  LEGION OF DOOM will make its debut appearance at Legions Of Metal Fest in Chicago this June before heading overseas for a performance at Hellfest in France with more live dates to be announced in the weeks to come.   LEGION OF DOOM: 6/03/2023 Legions Of Metal Fest @ Reggies Live – Chicago, IL [info] 6/18/2023 Hellfest – Clisson, FR [info]   LEGION OF DOOM: Ron Holzner – bass Lothar Keller – guitars Henry Vasquez – drums Karl Agell – vocals Scott Reagers – vocals Victor Griffin – guitars   http://www.legionofdoomband.com http://www.facebook.com/legionofdoom http://www.facebook.com/troubletheskull http://www.instagram.com/legionofdoommetal http://www.instagram.com/theskullusa

Gathered to rehearse for several upcoming East Coast shows and a European tour this summer, Zen comes toe to toe (or more precisely couch to couch) with the iconic Stoner / Doom Metal outfit, THE OBSESSED. As a staple of the underground metal scene for decades, Scott “Wino” Weinrich has more than a few memories to share about his impressive career - from his renowned stints with Saint Vitus to his all-star collaboration with Lemmy & Dave Grohl on the latter's heavy metal side project, Probot - he's a busy guy who's bumped into a lot of interesting shoulders . With an especially rich catalog of music spanning his career, it's a treat to hear Wino's enthusiasm to be performing his Obsessed material with the contemporary line-up including the talented Brian Constantino, Chris Angleberger, & Jason Taylor. In addition to sharing their individual impressions and stories about Wino, the band talks about the touring life, breaks down the unique custom and vintage gear comprising their colossal rigs, and shares recommendations of their personal favorite bands in the business now. Brandishing perhaps the greatest handle in photography history, Dylan sits down with Tomoko Inoue, perhaps better known by her moniker, The Tinfoil Biter, to delve into her history as a concert photographer. A chance opportunity to photograph Down while in Japan opened the gate and her dynamic shots have highlighted the already heavy presence of such artists as Crowbar, High on Fire, Child Bite, Weedeater, and Osees. We go through some select sets of her photos while also touching on the highs and lows of living in Michigan in the 90s, how drawing lead her to photography, the dreaded purple light, knowing when to put the camera down, and randomly becoming acquainted with Henry Wilson from Floor*. You can check out more of Tomoko's photography over at her website. *NOTE: There was a slip of the tongue and we meant to say Henry WILSON of Floor. Mr. Vasquez is correctly from Saint Vitus, not Floor. Our bad!

This week we're discussing every album by Saint Vitus. Led by guitarist Dave Chandler, Saint Vitus pretty much invented doom metal in the early to mid 80s after being signed to Greg Ginn's (of Black Flag) record label, SST. While the band has gone through numerous vocalists and lineup changes, the infamous Scott Wino Weinrich left his mark on this band with some of their best albums. Back in 1518 the French city of Strasbourg experienced one of the worst recorded outbreaks of Dance Mania ever witnessed. The Dance Plague or Dance Epidemic struck almost 400 people and may have killed as many as 15 people a day. It lasted well over two months and left everyone puzzled. Demonic possession? Mold? Mass Hysteria? What caused this to happen and what did Saint Vitus have to do with it? We still don't know even 500 years later. But maybe a batch of sixth graders studying pathogens can figure it out. Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/curator135)

OK, it's a new year, new decade. Goodbye teens, hello 20's!Got a good one to start you off today:In This Episode: ANN COURTNEY[photo my Omar Kasrawi)My 20's were a freakshow, but that's a tale for another day.PRESS PLAY because we made it through, we're here now, this is Play It Like It's Music, the show is back, I'm Trevor Exter and thanks for tuning in!If you know me at all, you know I've had my battles with music. Not just with trying to play it or trying to get ahead in the music business or even just play a gig. But I've had battles just trying to come to terms with "what the hell music even IS" or "why do we do this??"I've tried to quit a bunch of times, but by now I know that life is definitely better if I'm playing. So a day doesn't go by...I'm here at the top of the 20-20's, (20/20’s?) still playing cello and still talking to people. So wherever you are today, whatever your relation to music, whether you're playing or touring or struggling or listening or learning or all of the above, I want to wish you well. And I want to make something clear, to start my own decade:I defined the best parts of my career when I refused to think of music as a product, but as a service. My attitude got much better when I didn't stay locked into the idea that I had to make "things" in order to call myself a musician. The audience may or may not want to buy your pieces of plastic but they always want to be served by you. So I went around saying that "Music is not a product, it's a service" and that worked. My gigs got better, my attitude was better. It's a good way to get in the door. But it turns out music is more than a service. Before it's anything you provide to anyone, It's an experience. IT's a phenomenon, you know what I mean. But unlike a "service"…we all get to have it. It doesn't have to be a transaction, you don't have to separate everybody into audience and performers and producers... it's just a gateway that opens up to infinity every time you start making a noise on something. So I'm just gonna say these three things before we move on today. On new years day, 2020:1. you have the right to your own noise2. No one can tell you how you should play3. you don't have to perform if you don't want toBecause music is huge, it's like the water or the air. IT's not something that can be taken away from you just because you were told that you won't make it or that a gig has to go down a certain way and you don't fit. No, music is infinite and you can always connect to it.So take that in moving forward into the year here. PLAY IT LIKE IT’S MUSIC - EPISODE 20 with Ann CourtneyThe band Mother Feather blows my mind every time I see a show of theirs, and Ann Courtney is amazing. She's a good friend and we go way back to my first gigs in Rockwood back in NYC. We get in to all of her background and her attitude and her approach, and you're in for a treat with that. They have a gig on Jan 24th 2020 at Saint Vitus opening for The Giraffes that you can go to if you're anywhere near NEW YORK.Go to: http://www.motherfeather.com/liveThank you so much for listening to the show. If you like it, tell a friend? Let's grow this thing.Come find us at playitlikeitsmusic.com, we did some good episodes and there's more coming. This show is for you!
