Its going to be another crazy hot weekend inn Toronto, so I'm hunkering down and working on projects indoors at least today. Hopefully everyone has a great weekend at Infest, I'm probably going to finish re-cabling my server closet and spend some time on the balcony just listening to new music! The second of our interviews stemming from Terminus is here, with rising synthpop/EBM act Sleek Teeth joining us. The band's use of harmonies, threading of the needle between pop and aggression, and flair for the uncanny and occluded have made them one of the new bands we're most impressed by these days, and they were happy to speak with us about all that and more. We're also offering some thoughts on the Vancouver stop of the ongoing Nine Inch Nails tour.
One of the enduring powerhouses of our era returns for RA.1000 with a riotous mix. When Helena Hauff made her first RA Podcast appearance back in 2013, she was on the eve of releasing her debut production on Actress' Werkdiscs imprint. In the 12 years that have elapsed, she's become not just a household name within electronic music, but the kind of rare talent that lives in seclusion from industry tumultt. (Hauff, enviously, has never even owned a smartphone.) Her calling card continues to be her penchant for rough and ready EBM, electro and new wave. Her unique ability is creating a singular listening experience from disparate or out-of-favour tracks, with a raw immediacy that functions as a redress to over-choreographed modern DJing. Her outsider approach is on show once again for RA.1000. Threaded together by strobe-lit DIY electronica, old-school acid house and corrosive machine funk that chews up the ear, the nearly two-hour set raises the bar once again. In the sci-fi themed first half, Hauff drops two Cybotron tracks, nodding to Juan Atkins' blueprint for electro. You'll also hear "Riot" by Underground Resistance, the definitive mission statement for a world ablaze. This is musical anarchism, executed to the highest degree. Find the tracklist and interview at ra.co/podcast/1017. Listen to all RA.1000 mixes, as well as the complete history of the RA Podcast, at 1000.ra.co

I got a lot of great feedback about last weeks extra long theme show! I'm really glad you folks liked it, I haven't gotten that many emails about a show in years. We'll have to have another one. Probably closer to the 2026 membership drive! But we're back to our normal format of new music, and we've got a great show for everyone this week! A few weeks ago I promised a theme show, I like to do extra long shows when I come back from one of my two "breaks" every year. It would appear that I've used up all of my RSA vacation time, so its smooth sailing from here to the end of the year. This week we're going 2 hours into the period of time from the late 90s to the early 2000s. I've tried to pick bands that were of that era, and are now defunct, but you'll probably notice a few bands that are going strong all these years later. I hope you enjoy this stroll down memory lane! MUSICUNEED welcomes Agustin Loyola to the MuNcast series — a Chilean-born selector now based in Miami, whose sound navigates the darker edges of the electronic spectrum. Blending new wave, dark wave, and EBM, Agustin's sets unfold with a cinematic pulse: moody, textured, and deeply intentional. Guided by a long-time reverence for Depeche Mode, his music doesn't just move bodies — it lingers, creating space for reflection beneath the rhythm. His creative world extends beyond music. A passionate photographer, Agustin brings a sharp eye for tone and composition to every frame — whether behind a lens or behind the decks. This MuNcast captures a personal side of his evolving journey — weaving emotion, atmosphere, and influence into a cohesive and immersive session, shaped with a minimalist touch and deep, low-end grooves. A much better week than last, so I'm here with a show for you! I've made some progress on the upcoming theme show, the list of tracks has made it from my phone to my computer. The tracks picked came out to an even number, so I can use everything without making any cuts. The one hint I'll give away is we're looking at a timeframe from the late 90s to the early aughts. This week we've got a great show for everyone as I put a few discs to bed and play some more new stuff! EPISODE 107"Portals of Iron and Blood: EBM and Metal Collide"From the decaying alleys of post-industrial cities to the ancient woods where black fire still burns, La Araña FM presents a sonic confrontation between two seemingly distant worlds: Electronic Body Music and Black Metal. In this explosive episode, Daniel Schifter explores the raw mechanical rhythms of Portion Control, pioneers of EBM whose gritty, analog chaos paved the way for Skinny Puppy and Nine Inch Nails. We dive deep into their track “The Great Divide”, a modern anthem of emotional disconnection in a digital age.On the other side of the ritual fire stands Witching Hour, a Polish trio invoking the primal power of blackened thrash with their track “Black Countess” — a fierce tribute to feminine vengeance and infernal mysticism.More than genres, this episode is about collision and communion: two sounds that, despite their differences, pulse with rebellion, honesty, and an unwavering devotion to darkness.
The 2017 NEJM study, ALPS, compared amiodarone, lidocaine, and placebo for refractory shockable rhythms in adults with out of hospital cardiac arrest. They found no significant difference in survival to hospital discharge or functional survival between any of the arms. If that study has left you confused, you're not alone. And you're in luck. Tanner Smida joins us again to discuss his latest paper using something called target trial emulation to assess the difference in ROSC and survival to discharge between amiodarone and lidocaine. This is a great discussion of his paper, the methodology, and how we can put his results into the context of ALPS.Citations:1.Smida T, Crowe R, Price BS, Scheidler J, Martin PS, Shukis M, Bardes J: A retrospective ‘target trial emulation' comparing amiodarone and lidocaine for adult out-of-hospital cardiac arrest resuscitation. So my vacation didn't come off as I expected. I had a very, very large flare up of my anxiety disorder so I made the smart decision and stayed home rather be in distress while visiting friends. Its not the first time its happened, so I'm going to put a pause on overnight flights and multiple time zones. William Gibson once wrote that flying allowed us to travel faster than our souls, and it usually takes ~18 hours for them to catch up. Helen MacDonald and Juan Franco are back to examine the newest in evidence based medicine. In this episode: gabapentinoids are medications routinely prescribed for treating epilepsy and nerve pain. But, they come with side effects; among them - dizziness, cognitive impairment, and a dent to motor coordination - as well as an increase in suicidal ideation for the patient. Seena Fazel is professor of forensic psychiatry at University of Oxford and joins Juan to discuss a new paper tracking the association of self-harm and gabapentinoids use in Sweden. Meanwhile, GRADE is a fundamental tool for clinicians to assess the quality of evidence for medical interventions. But, the sheer number of recommendations in the GRADE series can be overwhelming. Gordon Guyatt is a distinguished professor of medicine at McMaster University in Canada, and an early figure in the rise of evidence based medicine. He joins Helen to reflect on the future of EBM, and how the new Core GRADE system can cut through the noise. Reading list: 1. Associations between gabapentinoids and suicidal behaviour, unintentional overdoses, injuries, road traffic incidents, and violent crime: population based cohort study in Sweden 2. Why Core GRADE is needed: introduction to a new series in The BMJ
I'm actually getting everything posted nice and early this week because I got up for my club Bike ride, and while I was in the shower it was cancelled due to the impending first heatwave of the year. While this is kids stuff compared to some places, I'm going to agree that cycling in temperatures including humidity reaching 43c (thats 110 in Freedom Units) is not a good idea. Discretion is the better part of valour and all that. But since I'm up nice and early I figured I'd get the show posted and have a cup of tea as I contemplate breakfast. Elektrostaub - Falling f. Ontario weather struck again, and while its nice and sunny, its downright cold in the small town I grew up in. So the weekend trip of nostalgia and family duties will have to wait until the end of the summer. But that just means that I have extra time this weekend, so RSA is out at the usual time! I doubt we'll be going back to the old "Summer Hours" where I'd post the show on Mondays. I don't live in the saddle anymore, so I have time for all of my various hobbies! A quick heads up that I'm already hard at work on next weeks show. I'm going to be away most of next weekend, so I'm trying to get everything done ahead of time. Fingers crossed that I can get everything done on time (and its looking good) and I can just get home on Sunday evening and hit "Publish". Its been a good week though, having the extra time to myself meant I could listen to more music. While I can do that while working, I'll "lose" time where my attention is 100% on work, and then have to figure out how far back to go to restart. I just wish the weather had been better. With Bruce off to the highlands and Alex recovering under a pile of coats in a hall closet somewhere, this week's episode is a hastily recorded recap of this year's Verboden Festival from right here in Vancouver. You can hear the strain in the quality of our voices at the time of this recording, as we did plenty of chatting with artists, attendees and assorted friends and well-wishers while taking in an excellent lineup of artists across two venues, representing for the past, present and future of darkwave, EBM, industrial and several related genres.
The avant-electronic and experimental Irish music festival Open Ear returns to Sherkin Island on the June Bank Holiday weekend. Open Ear is known for its preoccupation with illuminating music operating on the fringes, and the remote island setting of Sherkin Island off the coast of Baltimore in West Cork reflects this outsider ethos. The varied programme is drawn from electronic, techno, experimental folk and trad, jazz EBM, bass music and art rock, and this year features the likes of Irish techno legend Sunil Sharpe, Scottish piper Brìghde Chaimbeul, Cork sean nos rockers I Dreamed I Dream, Belfast Sound Advice record shop owner Marion Hawkes, Limerick rap and production duo Citrus Fresh and 40Hurtz, Catalan/Italian EBM duo Dame Area, Autechre collaborator Rob Hall, and lots more. The programme features one artist at a time across various stages on Sherkin including the infamous Banger Cliff. I spoke to Open Ear head of programming Dion Doherty aka Belacqua about the challenges and uniqueness of putting on an experimentally-minded festival on an island and as it approaches its 10th year, how its planning to grow its European partnerships and unearths Irish music of the underground. * Support Nialler9 on Patreon, get event discounts, playlists, ad-free episodes and join our Discord community Listen on Apple | Android | Patreon | Pocketcasts | CastBox | Stitcher | Spotify | RSS Feed | Pod.Link

Took a week off last week to get some stuff sorted out. Should called it a vacation weekend, but the fact is when your folks are gone for half the year that when they come back we make a point of visiting. I tried to sit down and finish the show last week, but I was burnt out. *I* sounded like hell, so I scrapped it and took a week off. Its better to recharge the batteries a bit than put out something substandard. I tried to let everyone know, but with the enshittification of social media, its hard to get the word out.
