Completely back on my feet and as usual when I'm on the mend I have more time to sit in front of the computer and work on RSA. I'm proud of all of my shows (1402 so far!) but the ones that I spend extra time listening and adjusting are always special to me. Plus it's really nice not to be sick! The second half of our commentary on Synthetic Symphony's "EBM Club Classics" picks up immediately where Thursday's look at the first disc left off. We're looking at familiar favourites from Nitzer Ebb and the Klinik, flagging the likes of Poesie Noire and Inside Treatment for further research, and scratching our heads at the inclusion of Cancer Barrack on an EBM comp.

Our monthly We Have A Commentary bonus podcast works a bit differently this month; with Alex being off in the UK we've prerecorded a double dose of discussion of Synthetic Symphony's 1998 comp "EBM Club Classics", with the first disc dropping today and the second this coming Sunday. Disc one functioned as a handy DJ tool in the late 90s and early 00s, linking some of the first cuts from the likes of And One, Leaether Strip, and Bigod 20 with contemporary state of the art from Covenant, while also throwing in some left-field choices and proto-EBM cuts which have us speculating about the genre and the idea of an EBM canon at large. As we've been telling anyone who'll listen, seeing EBM legends Portion Control attack the Terminus stage with unaging menace and aggression was one of the main highlights of our recent trip to Calgary, and we were able to interview John Whybrew and Dean Piavanni about their legacy as electronic pioneers and, perhaps more importantly, what's compelling them to push forward into the present, with much of the strongest Portion Control material having been released in recent years. We're also discussing our showcases at Edmonton's Purple City Festival, as well as a recent Dark Chisme show.

Born in Tokyo in 2010, Rainbow Disco Club has always operated under a single guiding concept: “Beyond Space and Time” – a commitment to authentic underground music that transcends genre, geography and trend. Alongside these club nights in Tokyo the annual event as you'll likely know, takes place in the Japanese countryside of Shizuoka's Izu Peninsula/ Love International, meanwhile, as many of you will also likely know, draws a loyal family of returning artists, crews and ravers to the shores of Tisno each summer for what amounts to a celebration of sun, music and community. Watching what he's built since then – and more importantly, how he's built it, with the same unguarded enthusiasm he had at the very beginning – has been one of the genuine pleasures of growing up in and around this ‘scene' together. Because the thread has always been consistent. Whether as a DJ, programmer, promoter, or raver, there are few dancefloors he hasn't graced, and fewer still where he hasn't left some kind of mark. Since cutting his teeth in those 90s rooms, he's built an inimitable sound that moves freely between house, techno, breaks and electro, EBM, wonky chuggers and disco-infused oddities – often all within the same set. In this episode of Journal Club, Daphna reviews a randomized controlled trial from the European Journal of Pediatrics investigating the physiologic effects of intranasal expressed breast milk (EBM) administration in preterm infants. The study found that infants receiving 0.2 mL of fresh breast milk intranasally three times daily showed significantly higher cerebral oxygenation levels, along with more favorable trends in heart rate and respiratory rate, compared to controls. While time to full oral feeding and length of hospital stay were unchanged, the safety data is reassuring. Most AI companies are racing to build bigger LLMs. Eve Bodnia thinks that's the wrong approach.Eve is the founder and CEO of Logical Intelligence, which is developing an alternative to the transformer-based models dominating the industry. Her argument: LLMs' architecture makes them fundamentally unsuited for some mission-critical tasks. A system that generates output one token at a time, with no ability to inspect its own reasoning mid-process or guarantee its results, shouldn't be trusted to design chips, analyze financial data, or even fly a plane. Her alternative is the energy-based model (EBM), a form of AI rooted in the physics principle of energy minimization, not language prediction. Rather than guessing the next probable word, an EBM maps every possible outcome across a mathematical landscape, where likely states settle into valleys and improbable ones sit on peaks.
