A beautiful weekend, so I made myself go for a walk and enjoy the sunshine before I posted the show this week. A small reminder that I'll be taking my last week of "vacation" from RSA shortly. So we'll be missing the July 14th episode as I bask in the sun in Scotland. Unlike a couple of years ago I'm not being an idiot and bringing my computer with me. I'm allowed to take a break, and I have to leave you wanting more! I actually made it out and got some sun this weekend. This of course left me crashed out on the couch for a bit, and then a little bird whispered in my ear "Oi! Dork! You have a radio show to post!" So before I go and hunt down some food lets get RSA up for everyone to enjoy! This week while doing my "proof-listening" session I scrapped and re-did a bit of the show. Ontario weather struck again, and while its nice and sunny, its downright cold in the small town I grew up in. So the weekend trip of nostalgia and family duties will have to wait until the end of the summer. But that just means that I have extra time this weekend, so RSA is out at the usual time! I doubt we'll be going back to the old "Summer Hours" where I'd post the show on Mondays. I don't live in the saddle anymore, so I have time for all of my various hobbies! A quick heads up that I'm already hard at work on next weeks show. I'm going to be away most of next weekend, so I'm trying to get everything done ahead of time. Fingers crossed that I can get everything done on time (and its looking good) and I can just get home on Sunday evening and hit "Publish". Its been a good week though, having the extra time to myself meant I could listen to more music. While I can do that while working, I'll "lose" time where my attention is 100% on work, and then have to figure out how far back to go to restart. I just wish the weather had been better. I quite enjoy sitting on my balcony with my headphones. Still too windy. Still too rainy. A gray overcast day makes sense while we in Canada celebrate our ever increasingly anarchonistic holiday "Victoria Day". Traditionally this is known as the May two four weekend. Two four being common slang for a case of beer. While I don't really drink anymore, I'll be going out to resupply my stock of Root Beer, as I seem to have slightly regressed a bit back into childhood. With Bruce off to the highlands and Alex recovering under a pile of coats in a hall closet somewhere, this week's episode is a hastily recorded recap of this year's Verboden Festival from right here in Vancouver. You can hear the strain in the quality of our voices at the time of this recording, as we did plenty of chatting with artists, attendees and assorted friends and well-wishers while taking in an excellent lineup of artists across two venues, representing for the past, present and future of darkwave, EBM, industrial and several related genres.
The avant-electronic and experimental Irish music festival Open Ear returns to Sherkin Island on the June Bank Holiday weekend. Open Ear is known for its preoccupation with illuminating music operating on the fringes, and the remote island setting of Sherkin Island off the coast of Baltimore in West Cork reflects this outsider ethos. The varied programme is drawn from electronic, techno, experimental folk and trad, jazz EBM, bass music and art rock, and this year features the likes of Irish techno legend Sunil Sharpe, Scottish piper Brìghde Chaimbeul, Cork sean nos rockers I Dreamed I Dream, Belfast Sound Advice record shop owner Marion Hawkes, Limerick rap and production duo Citrus Fresh and 40Hurtz, Catalan/Italian EBM duo Dame Area, Autechre collaborator Rob Hall, and lots more. The programme features one artist at a time across various stages on Sherkin including the infamous Banger Cliff. I spoke to Open Ear head of programming Dion Doherty aka Belacqua about the challenges and uniqueness of putting on an experimentally-minded festival on an island and as it approaches its 10th year, how its planning to grow its European partnerships and unearths Irish music of the underground. * Support Nialler9 on Patreon, get event discounts, playlists, ad-free episodes and join our Discord community Listen on Apple | Android | Patreon | Pocketcasts | CastBox | Stitcher | Spotify | RSS Feed | Pod.Link

Managed to get some cycling in this weekend, so I get to spend Sunday morning lamenting the lack of exercise I've done in the past few months and get RSA complete! I'm going to take another week off some time in July as I take a vacation of some sort, but we'll burn that bridge when we get to it. Took a week off last week to get some stuff sorted out. Should called it a vacation weekend, but the fact is when your folks are gone for half the year that when they come back we make a point of visiting. I tried to sit down and finish the show last week, but I was burnt out. *I* sounded like hell, so I scrapped it and took a week off. Its better to recharge the batteries a bit than put out something substandard. I tried to let everyone know, but with the enshittification of social media, its hard to get the word out. In this episode, Jared Powell sits down with Professor Gordon Guyatt, the physician and researcher who coined the term evidence-based medicine (EBM). They unpack the origins of EBM, why it's often misunderstood, and how it continues to shape modern healthcare. Rather than being rigid or formulaic, EBM is about integrating the best evidence with clinical expertise and—crucially—patient values and preferences.

A landmark for minimal, aggressive EBM for decades to come, the debut LP from Swedish legends Pouppée Fabrikk is the subject of this month's commentary podcast. A deceptively varied listen, Rage infused EBM with a unique punk ethos, and as we discuss here, hinted at the voluminous discography frontman Henrik Nordvargr Björkk was to embark upon.

This week I'm actually getting the show done early so that I can get out on my bicycle today! Lets see how far I get today without collapsing, gasping for air. I can feel that I haven't done any significant excercise since the late fall. But I'm cycling out to have a late lunch, so Sushi is my motivator! This week we delve into some great new releases and put a few discs to bed. I guess I'm going to have to think of another long theme show. Not all medical research is created equal, so how do we know which studies to trust? The phrase evidence-based medicine (EBM) is often misunderstood and misused. What does it truly mean to rely on evidence in clinical decision-making?Dr. Gordon Guyatt, the father of the term evidence-based medicine, explains how to assess scientific studies, understand the strength of different types of evidence, and apply findings to clinical decisions.Want to make better-informed health decisions? This interview will help you learn how to critically assess medical evidence for yourself. In this conversation, Dr. Guyatt breaks down:✅ Why some studies are more trustworthy than others✅ The limitations of observational studies in nutrition and medicine✅ How the GRADE framework categorizes evidence from high to low certainty✅ How to critically assess nutrition and mental health research✅ The importance of patient values in clinical decision-makingAs new chronic disease treatments emerge from rapidly evolving research, understanding the quality of evidence is more important than ever. The ability to distinguish robust data from weak correlations isn't just a skill—it's essential for making informed, effective decisions in patient care.#MetabolicMind #EvidenceBasedMedicine #MedicalResearch #NutritionScience #GRADEMethod #HealthDecisionsExpert Featured:Dr. Gordon Guyatt, MDResources Mentioned:Core GRADE WorkshopCMEs Mentioned:Managing Major Mental Illness with Dietary Change: The New Science of Hopehttps://www.mycme.com/courses/managing-major-mental-illness-with-dietary-change-9616Brain Energy: The Metabolic Theory of Mental Illnesshttps://www.mycme.com/courses/brain-energy-the-metabolic-theory-of-mental-illness-9615Follow our channel for more information and education from Bret Scher, MD, FACC, including interviews with leading experts in Metabolic Psychiatry.Learn more about metabolic psychiatry and find helpful resources at https://metabolicmind.org/About us:Metabolic Mind is a non-profit initiative of Baszucki Group working to transform the study and treatment of mental disorders by exploring the connection between metabolism and brain health. Let's discuss the intricacies of evidence-based medicine (EBM) with Dr. Ben Li. The conversation dives deep into understanding different types of medical studies, their hierarchies, and how EMS providers can apply them to their practice. The episode covers evaluating research, the importance of study design, confounders, sample size, and how to discern the relevance and applicability of research findings. Dr. Li provides practical advice for critically appraising literature and emphasizes doing so in a way that is personally relevant to the listener's practice.
