This week on No More Late Fees, Jackie and Danielle go full punk (but make it Blockbuster) as they close out Lillard Mayhem Month with the ultimate ode to anarchy, angst, and aggressively gelled hair: SLC Punk! Joined by returning guest and punk-at-heart Simone, the trio dive into the 1998 cult classic that proves Matthew Lillard can monologue like a caffeinated philosophy major on open mic night. Come for the deep cuts on privilege, punk purity tests, and punk-to-public-educator pipelines—stay for the confusion over why there's so much organized anarchy in Utah.Things get hilariously existential as the gang unpacks Bob's tragically crusty bandage, Jason Segel's polite punch-outs, and the cinematic importance of the name “Heroin Bob” (spoiler: he doesn't even do drugs!). Danielle marvels at white culture in its purest punk form, Jackie reevaluates her teenage JNCO era, and Simone brings props—because what's more punk than reading poetry titled “My Feelings” while rocking pink hair? So grab your VHS copy, avoid mirrors, and brace yourself for the most philosophical acid trip since Bill & Ted.·Season 5 Episode 7—No More Late Fees https://nomorelatefeespodcast.com909-601-NMLF (6653)—Follow Us on Social:Instagramhttps://www.instagram.com/nomorelatefees TikTokhttps://www.tiktok.com/@nomorelatefees Facebookhttps://www.facebook.com/nomorelatefeesYoutubehttps://www.youtube.com/@nomorelatefees Twitterhttps://x.com/NoMoreLateFees —CONQUERingmyconquering.com10% Off Code: JACKIE10—NostaBeautyhttps://nostabeauty.com 20% Off Code: NMLF—Simone's Previous EpisodesLove and Basketballhttps://nomorelatefeespodcast.com/episode/love-and-basketball Pregaming with the Ladies of Role Call Podcasthttps://nomorelatefeespodcast.com/episode/pregaming-with-the-ladies-of-role-call-podcast Se7enhttps://nomorelatefeespodcast.com/episode/se7en Our Favorite Brad with Role Callhttps://nomorelatefeespodcast.com/episode/our-favorite-brad-with-role-call Y2K - MTV Video Music Awards pt.1 '95 - '99https://nomorelatefeespodcast.com/episode/y2k-mtv-video-music-awards-pt1-95-99 Y2K - MTV Video Music Awards pt.2 '00 - '05 https://nomorelatefeespodcast.com/episode/y2k-mtv-video-music-awards-pt2-00-05 The Sixth Sensehttps://nomorelatefeespodcast.com/episode/the-sixth-senseWe See Dead Peoplehttps://nomorelatefeespodcast.com/episode/we-see-dead-people-counting-down-cinematic-ghosts-with-simone

From the acting class in 7th grade that sparked Matthew's love of performing… to how he didn't let a learning disability or failing out of college curb his ambition or his belief in himself… to starting a theater company with friends and creating a community that would provide them with opportunities to perform… to quitting his day job the very night that he booked his first big film role (John Waters' SERIAL MOM)… to how he avoided the typical Hollywood pitfalls and personal hardships that so many young actors unfortunately find themselves falling into…to why he sees the goal of his craft as serving each story's director rather than serving himself as an actor… to auditioning for Wes Craven's SCREAM and how he looks back on his performance as “Stu” now… to why he thinks SCREAM's lasting longevity has so much to do with the film's decision to fully embrace the time period it was made in… to his experience in the director's chair for 2012's FAT KID RULES THE WORLD and the long process he went through to produce the film… to one of the best stories you'll ever hear about the making of SCOOBY-DOO and why “friends don't quit”… to the creation of his FIND FAMILIAR SPIRITS company which provides fandoms with genre themed direct-to-customer whisky (“Quest's End” and “Sandkheg's Hide” for Dungeons & Dragons fans) and tequila (“Macabre Spirits” for horror fans)… to the true value of fame, why hugs are so important, and why getting the opportunity to meet fans at conventions is an experience he can't imagine living without… Matthew is the perfect guest for this milestone episode. Austin recommended both SLC, Punk! movies this week, which is honestly the most punk thing ever because he knew it was going to piss of his "dad", Michael Larsen, and he fucking did it anyway! What's even more punk is he made us watch BOTH movies haha, Mike was NOT happy. - AndyThis episode of Fried Rice Podcast was a blast as we dove into the cult classic SLC Punk! (1998). We were all amped from the get-go, reminiscing about how this movie shaped our views during those younger, rebellious years. It was one of those rare films that spoke to an era and mindset we all went through, making it a nostalgic trip down memory lane as we shared stories of trying to live that punk lifestyle—minus the heroin, of course. It's clear this movie still resonates, even though our lives have moved far from that chaotic energy. While we had a lot of love for the film's raw spirit, not everyone was on board with the way it portrayed punk culture. Some of us felt that the movie's exaggerated approach came off as more of a caricature than a true tribute. It was fun and chaotic, but at times it felt like it was trying too hard to be edgy, almost as if it was ticking off a list of punk stereotypes. However, we all agreed that Matthew Lillard's performance as Stevo was a highlight, especially during the emotional scenes where he struggles with the expectations placed on him by his family and society. In the end, we all saw SLC Punk! as a time capsule of its era—full of rage, angst, and a surprisingly heartfelt message about finding your own path. Our grades reflected our varied takes, but the final average landed at a B-. It's not a perfect film, but it's undeniably memorable and still packs a punch for anyone looking to reconnect with their inner rebellious spirit. We are on Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/5MHpzbpH9H0jXRCJI34KlC?si=a95fe723c01c4b6cWe are on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@FriedRicePodcastCheck out our website: www.friedricepodcast.comCall our VOICEMAIL: (702) 829-0117 and listen for this week's question!(don't worry, Andy isn't sitting in his room, waiting by his phone like it's the 90s, just fiddling with the long chord, watching "Survivor"...)

Shat the Movies: 80's & 90's Best Film Review

In this episode of 'Shat the Movies,' we're cranking up the volume and diving into the punk rock chaos of "SLC Punk!" from 1998. Join us as we explore the anarchic adventures of Stevo and Heroin Bob through the conservative streets of Salt Lake City. We'll laugh at the outrageous antics, critique the edgy fashion, and debate whether the film's bold statements about rebellion and conformity still resonate today. It's a raucous trip back to the '90s punk scene you won't want to miss! Plot Summary: "SLC Punk!" (1998) stars Matthew Lillard and Michael Goorjian as Stevo and Heroin Bob, punk rockers in 1980s Salt Lake City. The film explores their rebellion against conservative norms, touching on themes of identity, adulthood, and irony. It combines energetic punk music with poignant moments of self-discovery. Whether or not the movie feels “authentic” to you, it’s not unreasonable to guess there’ve been plenty more who’ve felt […] The post Middle Sattre: “Hate Yourself to the Core” appeared first on KUT & KUTX Studios -- Podcasts.

n the late 90's James Merendino crafted one of the most iconic comedy dramas of all time, “SLC Punk!” The film is a love letter (many of the characters were based on people he had known) to the punk scene of the mid 80's, starring up and coming actor Matthew Lillard. However, James had been making movies and working in the business for a few years prior to that. Together, we talk about his career, in which he was mistaken as a PA numerous times on his own sets, getting older and the future of filmmaking.

We had recorded this conversation earlier in the year, and since then, the film has gone on to be nominated six times for the golden globes, winning two of them, one for best actress and one for best actor. “The Rabbit And The Butcher” An actor of tremendous range and versatility, the Michigan-born and L.A.-raised James Duval has had quite a career. He tore through the '90s, appearing in movies like The Doom Generation, SLC Punk Independence Day, Nowhere and Go, and by 2000, his resume was packed. He appeared as the rabbit Frank in Donnie Darko in 2001 and since then, he's added over forty films to his CV, including Kaboom, Blue Dream, Chasing Ghosts and Comic Book Villains. The preservation society around Donnie Darko has kept Frank the Rabbit very much alive in the public consciousness. And speaking of preservation societies, it turns out that James and I have been a part of the same one for many years. We're both massive Jazz Butcher fans and the Butcher Facebook group, which counted the Butcher himself, Pat Fish, as one of its active participants until his death last year, is a very special thing. it's a tight group made up people who really care about each other and who understand the magic of the music and how its informed their lives. The Jazz Butcher is for sure a band that existed below the radar of the mainstream, but to us, they were the biggest band in the world. And still are. In many ways, the Jazz Butcher are like Frank the Rabbit—eternal and unique and unforgettable to those who know about them. So James and I were at the same JBC show in 1997 and we talk about that and so much more.
