Cliff Burton was the founding member for Metallica as a bass guitarist. Cliff had amazing talent.
Originally founded by current members Singer and Rhythm Guitarist James Hetfiled and Drummer Lars Ulrich, alongside Bassist Ron McGovney and Lead Guitarist Dave Mustaine, Metallica actually parted ways with both McGovney and Mustaine due to various personal and professional conflicts before recording and releasing their 1983 debut album, controversially titled ‘Kill ‘Em All’. McGovney was quickly replaced by revered Bassist, the now-late Cliff Burton, while Mustaine was replaced by legendary member-to-this-day, solo-master Kirk Hammett. Still an incredibly rough-around-the-edges Thrash Metal band, Cliff Burton would have a massive influence on the maturing of Metallica for their second album, Ride The Lightning. Metallica would follow Ride The Lightning up with 1986’s Master of Puppets No longer just making music for the underground metalheads of the world, ‘Puppets’ marked Metallica’s Major Label debut with Elektra Records. The album was roundly received as one of - if not the greatest metal album of the time, with critics noting how much Burton’s influence in particular had progressed the band’s sound. Tragedy would strike Metallica in September of 1986 - mere months after MOP’s release, as Cliff Burton would die in a bus accident in Sweden, while on tour promoting the record. By 1987, Metallica would find their necessary replacement for Burton - Bassist Jason Newsted. With Newsted in the band - Metallica geared up to release their final album of the 80s, called …And Justice For All. Tragedy would strike Metallica in September of 1986 - mere months after MOP’s release, as Cliff Burton would die in a bus accident in Sweden, while on tour promoting the record. Burton was only 24 years old when he was ejected from the window of Metallica’s tour bus as it skidded off the road suddenly, while the band members slept. The bus would land on top of him, killing him instantly. While the fault of the crash was hotly (and legally) debated at the time, ultimately Metallica’s tour bus driver was found not to be at fault for the freak accident. By 1987, Metallica would find their necessary replacement for Burton - Bassist Jason Newsted. Years later, Newsted would tell VH1’s That Metal Show that he secured the gig by stealthily finding a Metallica setlist, learning all the songs on it to note perfection, and demo-ing them out for Ulrich, who hired him two days later. YOUTUBE CLIP VH1 1 With Newsted in the band - Metallica geared up to release their final album of the 80s, called …And Justice For All. By this point, Metallica had very much made a name for themselves as the premiere Metal band, and Justice would prove it; peaking at number 6 on the Billboard album charts, going double platinum across its album cycle. Mainstream critical success would also soon follow for the band; although they would lose out on winning the first (and only) ever Best Hard Rock/Metal Performance Vocal or Instrumental GRAMMY Award to very-much-not-a-metal-band Jethro Tull’s very-much-not-a-metal album Crest of a Knave in 1989, Metallica’s song One would snag them the inaugural Best Metal Performance award in retribution at the following year’s ceremony. Eventually - …And Justice For All would follow in the footsteps of its pivotal predecessor, going more than 8x platinum to date. Now, you may be thinking by this point that this is truly unprecedented success for a metal band. Of course, there’s always a place in music for aggressive, heavy tunes, but as the 80s turned to the 90s - you would be forgiven for assuming that the roughly 4 to 5 million records sold in America across 4 monster albums, was about as good as it could get for any metal band, and perhaps they’d finally hit their glass ceiling. But Metallica, simply put - were not just any metal band, and were ready to change the way the world perceived heavy metal forever. For the first time ever, the band understood that they didn’t know everything there was about not only composing music - but producing it, and they were going to need someone to help guide them through the process, if they were going to do it right. So what did they do, you ask? Call in a Canadian, Naturally. This is the story of Metallica's Epic -' Nothing Else Matters' with newly unearthed footage from the band themselves - including interviews live from the studio while recording the iconic Metallica (Black Album).

For the debut episode of The David Ellefson Show, legendary Anthrax bassist Frank Bello joins David Ellefson and Joshua Toomey for an epic conversation packed with killer stories, bass talk, and plenty of laughs. Frank dives into his new partnership with Spector Basses, detailing his journey to the brand and what makes his signature bass stand out.The stories don't stop there—Frank shares an unforgettable moment when he and a friend found themselves buzzed into a recording studio, only to walk in on none other than Gene Simmons casually eating cookies. From the madness of NAMM to the inevitable plague known as "NAMMthrax," the guys recall their experiences at the convention, including the all-too-real struggle of playing shows while sick. Frank even gives a hands-on bass demo, breaking down "Room for One More," and discusses his time with Metal Allegiance.David and Joshua kick off the show with a deep dive into the legacy of Cliff Burton, discussing whether David was ever asked to emulate his iconic playing style. The conversation then shifts to original Metallica bassist Ron McGovney, as Joshua wonders if he was ever considered for a spot in Megadeth. David also shares some of his earliest memories of Anthrax bassist Frank Bello, reflecting on their history and the thrash metal scene of the era. To wrap things up, the guys take a nostalgic look back at Megadeth's first-ever show on February 17, 1984, in San Francisco—breaking down the setlist, the atmosphere, and what it meant for the band's future.
DOOMSDAY FOR THE DECEIVER, the debut album from FLOTSAM & JETSAM, was released on July 4, 1986, after being recorded in just a mere 2 weeks with a paltry $12,000 budget. In short, it is a bona fide, legendary, thrash masterpiece. And if you're reading this and thinking “Okay, FLOTSAM & JETSAM…why does that sound familiar?”, the reason is because the bass player for that band would later become Metallica's new bassist following the tragic and untimely death of Cliff Burton in late 1986. It is without question, a speed/power/thrash/heavy metal classic that is so steeped in 1986 vibes that we're actually surprised none of the album was featured on “Stranger Things”. Learn the latest metal conspiracy theory regarding AJFA with a shocking twist nobody saw coming, discover a great new way to “get in shape” with the brand-new aerobic workout craze that's sweeping the nation, get ready to enjoy the “tang” and JOIN US for the only “first new album” featuring Jason Newsted with a killer bass mix as we take on DOOMSDAY FOR THE DECEIVER. A number of bands seem to turn a corner with their third album, and Master of Puppets is no exception. Metallica's third album would achieve both critical and commercial success, crossing out of the new thrash metal sub-genre of hard rock to achieve multi-platinum recognition. Lead singer and rhythm guitarist James Hetfield collaborated with drummer Lars Ulrich as the principal songwriters, creating riffs that were assembled and reassembled over time until they formed a song. The band would then be called in to create a tile and topic for the song, at which point Hetfield would create the lyrics.Master of Puppets peaked at number 29 on the Billboard 200 albums chart. Although glam metal was on the rise, the band avoided the over-produced, synth-laden sound popular in the era, and stuck to their signature thrash metal sound with political lyrics. The resulting album would consolidate the thrash metal scene, and bring the sound into a more mainstream audience.Unfortunately, the album would also be the last one for which bassist Cliff Burton would be featured. Burton died in September 1986 while the band was on tour in Sweden, and their bus was involved in an accident.Metallica would become a huge group from the late 80's onward, and this album shows the strength of the group in those years when they were just coming into the consciousness of the commercial world.Lynch brings us this highly influential thrash metal album. Fans of the Show Julie Doran and son Zack join us in Wayne's absence for today's podcast. Welcome Home (Sanitarium)The song that concludes side 1 of the album was inspired by Ken Kesey's novel "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest." The lyrics portray the thoughts of a mental patient incorrectly institutionalized in an asylum. The track starts slow and picks up steam as it goes. BatteryThis title could be a reflection of the charge of assault and battery, or it could be inspired by the military hardware of an artillery battery. There is also a connection to the original San Francisco thrash scene, centered on the Old Waldorf club on Battery Street. Control of violent urges is a connection that runs through the piece regardless of the original inspiration.Master of PuppetsCocaine addiction is the master of puppets referenced in this title track. Hetfield had friends experiencing drug addiction, and wrote this track from the perspective of the drug itself, taking over the lives of people. This will be a familiar song to fans of "Stranger Things." ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Loved By the Sun by Jon Anderson and Tangerine Dream (from the motion picture “Legend”)This fantasy film starring Tom Cruise and Mia Sara was in the theaters at this time. STAFF PICKS:Your Wildest Dreams by the Moody BluesRob starts off the staff picks with a song that singer and guitarist Justin Heyward wrote while thinking back on his first love. It hit number 9 on the Billboard Hot 100, making this song the biggest commercial success for the Moody Blues since "Knights in White Satin."Mothers Talk by Tears for FearsBruce's staff pick was inspired by a mom telling her kids that when they make faces, they will freeze that way. It is also inspired by an anti-nuclear cartoon called "When the Wind Blows" by Raymond Briggs. The song was written by Roland Orzabal and Ian Stanley, and first performed in 1983. It went to number 27 on the Billboard Hot 100. Kiss by Prince & the RevolutionJulie features a chart topping hit and lead single from Prince's eighth studio album, "Parade." The song is more acoustic and stripped down than prior Prince hits, and Warner Bros. didn't want to release it as a single. However, Prince insisted on both its inclusion on the album and its release as a single.Addicted to Love by Robert PalmerLynch closes out the staff picks with a song that may be more famous for its video featuring models pretending to play the instruments. Palmer originally wanted to sing this song as a duet with Chaka Kahn, but was prevented from doing so by legal issues. INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:Songbird by Kenny G.You just can't go wrong with a sax as we close out today's podcast. This week we're discussing every album by Metallica from 1983 to 1988. That's right, all the thrash albums. This era highlights not only some of their most ferocious and technical material (and let's face it, BEST albums), but also their time with legendary bassist Cliff Burton before his tragic death. Everyone and their mom has heard these albums, but now it's time to hear them again.Closing track: "Dyers Eve" from ...And Justice for All (1988)Patreonhttps://www.patreon.com/everyalbumeverMerchhttps://pandermonkey.creator-spring.com/Mike's EP:Pander Monkey on Bandcamp, Spotify, Apple,Instagram:Mike @pandermonkeyAlex @everyalbumalexTom @tomosmansoundsHistory Tom's stuff:Music on Spotify, ApplePodcast on Spotify, YouTubeSubstackWebsiteMike's Picks:Master of Puppets (1986) -- Best Album, Personal FavoriteKill 'Em All (1983) -- Worst Album, Least FavoriteAlex's Picks:Master of Puppets (1986) -- Best Album...And Justice for All (1988) -- Personal FavoriteKill 'Em All (1983) -- Worst Album, Least FavoriteAlbums we discussed this episode...Kill 'Em All (1983)Ride the Lightning (1984)Master of Puppets (1986)...And Justice for All (1988)

In the early days of Metallica, their bass player carried a hammer on tour and had a gun that shot knives – or so the story goes. Their former lead guitarist was a drug dealer who kept two pitbulls for protection. They were blamed when a teenager, high on LSD, murdered a man in cold blood and quoted the band's lyrics. And in 1986, long before they became a household name, they suffered a sudden and horrific tragedy just as their thrash metal music was entering the mainstream. In the summer of 1984, Metallica were not yet the Metal Gods and household names they are now. They were a band with one record under their belt (Kill Em All, hear UAWIL #138 for our review with The Hook Rocks Jay Scott), some experience playing bigger stages as an opening act and a small but loyal following. However, their US record company didn't have the money to pay for a new album so James, Kirk, Cliff and Lars traveled to Copenhagen and crashed in the studio as producer Fleming Rasmussen helped them pull together what would become their 2nd album, Ride The Lightning. As the album turns 40, we reminisce about how we came to know this metal classic, relive hearing them play (most) of the album live and debate if this is indeed ther best ever (Master Of Puppets is neck and neck according to us). We can really hear the progress on Ride The Lightning vs. the 1st album as the songs are tight with more complexity yet more melodic. And while the lyrics are very intelligent and clear, they deal with very heavy topics like nuclear war (Fight Fire With Fire), suicide (Fade To Black), ancient plagues (Creeping Death) and the horrors of war (For Whom The Bell Tolls). Cliff Burton's psychedelic wah-wah bass is not only unique but a driver of the melody that is inherent in these thrash classics. James Hetfield's powerful riffs are among the best he's ever recorded and provides that steady crunch against which Kirk Hammett can lay everything from frantic solos to trippy fills. This album remains #1 in the heart one of your hosts from the Metallica catalog - the other is on the fence. It's hard to believe Ride The Lightning turns 40 on July 27, 2024 but we love this one and had fun going track by track. Michael Schenker's "Mother Mary," featuring Slash and Erik Grönwall, from My Years With UFO, provides a hard-hitting edge, while Cavalera's "From the Past Comes the Storms" from Schizophrenia takes us deeper into the realm of classic extreme metal. Skid Row's live performance of "Slave To The Grind" from Live In London and White Stones' "La Ira" from Memoria Viva, led by Opeth's Martín Méndez, continue to elevate the energy. Zeal & Ardor's "Fend You Off" from GREIF and Korpiklaani's "Harhainen Höyhen" from RANKARUMPU showcase unique and powerful sounds. Athena XIX reunites with front-man Fabio Lione for "The Conscience Of Everything," The Eternal delivers "Deathlike Silence" from Skinwalker, featuring Amorphis members Jan Rechberger and Niclas Etelävuori. We then feature tracks like 96 Bitter Beings' "Tripled Manic State" from "Return to Hellview" and Arka'n Asrafokor's "Walk With Us" from Dzikkuh, blending intense metal with African traditions. Higher Power collaborates with Never Ending Game on "Stillpoint," while Shun presents "Drawing Names" from Dismantle. Qaalm's "First Light of the Last Dawn" from their EP of the same name and another live track from Bruce Dickinson, "Afterglow Of Ragnarok," continue to diversify the playlist. Curse Upon A Prayer's "Black Venus Erotica" from The Worship: Orthoprax Satanism and Eternal Drak's "Haunting Place" from Imprisoned Souls add a darker tone. Nighthämmer's "Land Of Fear," Paradise In Flames' "I Feel The Plague" from Blindness, and Maudissez's "Fracture Par Fracture" maintain the intense atmosphere. Hässlig's "Apex Predator", Ancient Entities' "Pierced by Obsidian" from Echoes of Annihilation, and Bleed From Within's single "Hands of Sin" keep the momentum going. We also have Cabal's "Sort Sommer" featuring FABRÄK, Crypt Crawler's "The Immortal Realm," and Fleshgod Apocalypse's "Bloodclock" from Opera. Obscene's "The Reaper's Blessing" from Agony & Wounds, Octoploid's "Human Amoral" from Beyond The Aeons, and The Black Dahlia Murder's "Aftermath" from Servitude provide more brutal sounds. Morgue Meat's "Lesser Key Of Solomon" from Apocalyptic Visions, Traumatomy's "Womb Of The Desecrated" from Triumph of Enslavement, and Clan dos Mortos Cicatriz's "Flores cortadas, machado na pele" from Débil continue to push the envelope. Nails' "Imposing Will" from Every Bridge Burning, "Cavalera's "Nightmares Of Delirium" from "Schizophrenia," and from Saudi Arabia, Dune bring "Insidious" adding international flair. We wrap up with Exodus' live track "Piranha" from British Disaster: The Battle of '89, Blind Guardian's revisited "The Quest For Tanelorn," Orden Ogan's "The Order Of Fear," Chris Slade's "Back With A Vengeance" from Timescape, and another live performance by Bruce Dickinson with "Abduction" from The Mandrake Project. Enjoy the show!

Our monthly sidecast First Concert Memories was created as a vehicle to capture those special moments in our lives when we saw a band we loved for the first time. The anticipation, the build up, the people you're with, the performance, the party - all of if can bring back so many rich and happy memories. And it's great for artists, writers, journalists, podcasters and music fans - everyone has a story to tell about one influential night in their lives. For this month's show, we welcome a long time listener and talented musician to relate his story about seeing Metallica as a teenager in England, Nige Savage. We met Nige through social media and he was always willing to give an honest account of our episodes on Ugly American Werewolf in London. But when he mentioned that he loved First Concert Memories, we thought it would be cool to have one of our listeners tell his story. As we discussed using his music on our show (he provides the intro and outro music on UAWIL) we discovered that he had the rare privilege of seeing Metallica on the Master of Puppets tour just 7 days before the death of bassist Cliff Burton. We dive into the evening and the performance which included James Hetfield in a cast, a surprise guest appearance which went over Nige's head at the time and how Metallica's music influenced his own creativity with Chupacabra. Join us for this fun stroll down memory lane with a version of one of the world's biggest bands that Action Jackson and The Wolf never had a chance to see live. In this episode we welcome the splendid Steffan Chirazi to RBP Towers and ask him about his career as a metal/hard rock specialist and his long association with the mighty Metallica. We hear about our guest's lucky break as a 15-year-old Motörhead maniac when the band's frontman Lemmy gave up three hours to Steffan during the sessions for 1983's Another Perfect Day – and became a dear friend for life. Steffan then recounts how he got his foot in the door at Sounds and its enduring HM spinoff Kerrang!. The first of many interviews with Metallica led to Steffan moving to San Francisco, where the band's bassist Cliff Burton showed him around town – only to die, tragically, in a car crash just months later. Clips from Barney's 1996 audio interview with Lars Ulrich and James Hetfield prompt a conversation about our guest's close involvement with the thrashmeisters and his eventual stewardship of their in-house mag-turned-website So What! Following the metallic section of the episode we return to the older San Francisco of Haight-Ashbury and its '60s summer(s) of druggy love. Clips from Gene Sculatti and Davin Seay's 1984 audio interview with Jefferson Airplane/Hot Tuna bassist Jack Casady – about to turn 80 as we record this episode – give us the chance to ask Steffan about the days of the Grateful Dead and their many hirsute friends. From there we switch to the rather different environment that was late '60s Detroit, paying tribute to poet, political firebrand and MC5 manager John Sinclair. We circle back to Steffan's post-Kerrang! career and hear about his 1999 encounter with David Bowie before Jasper talks us out with his thoughts on newly-added library pieces about LL Cool J and Eels. Many thanks to special guest Steffan Chirazi. Find him on Patreon at patreon.com/steffyspurs and read the Metallica magazine So What! at metallica.com. Listen to the official Metallica podcast at https://metallica.lnk.to/TheMetallicaReport. Pieces discussed: Motörhead's Lemmy Kilmister: The Man Behind the Myth, Metallica: Thrash on Delivery, Metallica audio, Jefferson Airplane's Jack Casady audio, Portrait of the Artist: David Bowie, LL Cool J: Time Traveller and Eels: Shootenanny!.

When addressing the concept of the THRASH FAMILY TREE, there should be a handful of bands and musicians which immediately come to mind. This week's docket is a reflection on the vast interconnectedness of the THRASH FAMILY TREE, consisting of The Big Five of Thrash and beyond. Whether we're talking about musicians snatched up by other bands, replacements for original members, or “hired guns” with the chops, credentials, and expertise brought in to make a tour or an album a reality, the branches are always intertwining and interconnecting, often with spectacular results and to the great delight of dedicated thrash fans everywhere. If you've ever played a “Lee Guitar” (or even know what that is) we'd love to hear from you, because it's time to “leave The Four Horseman behind” and prepare to weather the “Clots in the Velvet Room” with the knowledge that “if it's good enough for Dracula it's good enough for you (unless it's clumpy)”. Get ready to embrace the sonic majesty of “The Burp Chronicles” and JOIN US as we begin to trace the ever growing and ever blossoming branches on the trunk of the THRASH FAMILY TREE.
