Als Gitarristin und Sängerin bei Kylesa wurde Laura Pleasants zur Metal-Heldin. In “Der Soundtrack meines Lebens” klärt sie auf, wie sie dahingekommen ist und sich neu erfunden hat. Beste Voraussetzungen für ein entspanntes Gespräch zu später Stunde: Im Sommer verbringt Laura Pleasants knapp eine Woche in Berlin, zwischen zwei Tour-Abschnitten ihrer Band Kylesa. Die Band aus Savannah, Georgia, wird 2001 aus dem Crust-Underground der Stadt geboren, aus der Asche der Band Damad. Kylesa vermengen auf unverwechselbare Art Sludge Metal, Psych, Prog und Punk. Nach sieben Alben, diversen Kleinformaten und endlosen Touren begeben sich Kylesa 2016 in eine achtjährige Pause. Pleasants verrät im Gespräch, dass die Band bereits 2015 derart ausgebrannt gewesen ist, dass die Pause unabdingbar war. 2024 kehren Kylesa jedoch zurück, spielen einen Reunion-Auftritt auf dem Roadburn Festival mit der Rhythmus-Gruppe von Nausea und haben wieder Spaß am Touren und ihrem starken Repertoire. Fans danken es mit ausverkauften Venues. Bevor Pleasants mit Kylesa zur Metal-Heldin wird, wächst sie mit ihrem Zwillingsbruder in Greensboro, North Carolina auf. Nach der Highschool zieht sie nach Savannah, um am College of Art & Design zu studieren. Seitdem sie 16 ist, spielt sie Gitarre. Sie ist in den frühen 90ern ein Grunge-Teen, hat erst eine Garage-Rock-Band, erlebt dann eine Punk-Sozialisation. Heute wird Pleasants als leuchtendes Beispiel stilisiert, wie man Coolness, Stilbewusstsein und Können vereint. Wobei sie im Gespräch immer wieder betont, dass sie Kylesa-Songwriting-, Gitarren- und Gesangspartner Phillip Cope viel zu verdanken hat. Der ist ein paar Jahre älter und eine Art Lichtgestalt des Southern-Undergrounds. Schon in den 90ern hat er Konzert von Eyehategod und Buzzoven veranstaltet. Pleasants ist ein Road-Warrior. Zeitweise ist sie so viel auf Tour, dass sie ihre Plattensammlung in einem Container einlagert, weil sie in den USA keinen festen Wohnsitz mehr hat. Um mit der Musik überleben zu können, hat sie schon jeden Scheißjob gemacht. Sie hat Hunde ausgeführt, gekellnert, historische Führungen geleitet, viktorianische Häuser restauriert, Badezimmer gekachelt. In den Jahren der musikalischen Pause von Kylesa hat sie sich musikalisch neu erfunden. Sie ist nach Los Angeles gezogen und hat dort The Discussion gegründet. Mit dem Projekt lebt sie ihre Vorliebe für Post-Punk, New-, Cold- und Dark Wave aus. Im “Soundtrack meines Lebens” mit Host Jan Schwarzkamp erläutert Pleasants, was sie als Teenagerin gehört hat, was ihr Songwriting für The Discussion beeinflusst hat und fasst die Geschichte und das Comeback von Kylesa zusammen.
