What does Jacquie Berglund do? She turns beer into food. Jacquie Berglund is the Founder and CEO of FINNEGANS Brew Co, the Rambunctious Social Entrepreneur and the driving force behind a beer brand that has generated over 2 million dollars in community impact since its inception in 2000. A graduate of The American Graduate School in Paris, Jacquie has degrees in Communications (BA) and International Relations and Diplomacy (MA): nothing to do with beer making. When she returned to the United States, she served as Marketing Director for Cara Irish Pubs in Minneapolis; this is where the spark for FINNEGANS was first lit. In this episode, we learn the story of how Finnegans Brew Co came to be and how Jacquie and her team developed the first flagship beer. We learn how her passion for impact led to the development of a non-profit for 100% of the proceeds to go back to the community. We talk about what the “power suit” is for each individual woman: surprisingly it is not always a suit. Lastly, we learn about FINNOVATION Lab for founders. Crack open a can with us and listen while we share the story of Jacquie Berglund, who sarted Finnegans back in 2000 as the first beer company in the world – that we know about – to donate 100 percent of its profits to charity. We love women entrepreneurs who give back, and she is a great example of how one person can make an incredible difference in this world. Proceeds from Finnegans go to the Food Group and fight hunger and food insecurity.
As usual, the boys partook of some serious craic. But the best part was chatting with Jacquie Berglund, CEO of Finnegans. It's a great story and she tells it brilliantly.

Finnegans Brewery, a brewery that gives back. Included is the 20th year anniversary celebration and conversation with the owner Jacquie Berglund
We’re giving our listeners a listen into our Minneapolis leg of our Developed Tour. This includes remarks from the Founder of Minneapolis’s Finnovation Lab, Jacquie Berglund, Congressman Dean Philips, and exclusive insights from our panelist. We’re going to be talking online platforms, how to use the tools and connections through those platforms, and what the app economy looks like in Minneapolis. But first we’re going to hit tech history and run though some DC headlines.
Jacquie Berglund is The Rambunctious Social Entrepreneur, CEO and Co-Founder of FINNEGANS, the first beer company in the world to donate 100% of profits to fund fresh produce for those in need. We discuss beer, the beer industry, and Jacquie’s experience being a badass CEO. Learn more about Jacquie’s company here: https://finnegans.org/
Jacquie Berglund is co-founder and CEO of Finnegans Brew Co., the first beer company in the world to donate 100 percent of profits to charity. Finnegans turns beer into food by purchasing produce from local farmers and donating it to food banks in every state where the beer is sold. In 2018, Finnegans opened its own brewery and tap room in downtown Minneapolis and launched the new Finnovation Lab for co-working and incubating socially minded startups. “I think I’m hardwired this way,” Berglund says. “I always wanted to make a difference.” On this episode of By All Means, Berglund talks about how she came up with the idea to launch a beer company that “does well and does good,” and how she structured her for-profit company to benefit Finnegans' non-profit arm. She addresses the challenges of growing a benefit corporation, and how, with guidance from Newman’s Own Foundation, she changed her model to bring on investors and fund expansion. “If you want to go dood, you’ve got to figure out how to fund it.” Berglund offers advice for the next generation of social entrepreneurs. After our conversation with Berglund, we go Back to the Classroom with University of St. Thomas Schulze School of Entrepreneurship Associate Dean Laura Dunham who offers insight on adding a philanthropic element to your business. Says Dunham, “Entrepreneurship is about solving problems that matter to you, and creating value for others.”
In 1990 Jacquie traveled to France and earned a master’s degree in international relations and diplomacy. She was critical in bringing together government officials who were once at war with one another to find ways to use the market to address issues facing their countries. After some realizations that real impact was happening at the grassroots level she decided to explore her entrepreneurial side. Moving back to Minnesota in 1997, she was hired by an old friend as Marketing Director at their new bar. At the same time she was volunteering at the local homeless shelter. This is when she had her “ah-ha” moment. She would leverage the robust beer market to address the homelessness problems in the area. And in 2000, the social enterprise, Finnegans was born. She was the sole employee until 2009 and on average has grown 30% or more annually. In 2010, they shifted focus to fighting hunger. 100% of profits go to the FINNEGANS community fund and are used to buy food for the hungry Through beer sales and other fundraising opportunities, the FINNEGANS Community Fund has donated more than half a million dollars and counting to community projects, while raising significant awareness about local hunger issues.
