“You can't talk people out of wanting a burger.” — Erin Somers In February, Bruce Friedrich came on the show to explain how lab-grown meat would save the planet. Today's guest is less sanguine about this revolution. Erin Somers — author of the bestselling novel The Ten Year Affair and a twenty-year vegetarian — spent a year exploring our supposedly meatless future. In “Where's the Beef?”, the cover story of this month's Harper's, Somers describes the still-born lab-grown-meat revolution that wasn't. The problem, Somers explains, isn't technological. Having raised $330,000 from Sergey Brin, the Dutch scientist Mark Post grew the first burger from cow shoulder cells back in 2013. What subsequently failed is everything else. The price never fell, VCs lost interest, conservatives legislated against it, and the industry's best hope, Believer Meats, went bankrupt. Above all, the revolution never went mainstream. “You can't talk people out of wanting a burger,” Somers explains. Somers' journey ended at the iconic Berkeley Bowl where she was offered a Sumo orange, a hybrid fruit engineered to be both delicious and resilient. Technology fed her after all. Just not in the way that revolutionaries like Bruce Friedrich predicted. The revolution won't be meatless. Let's hope we can still save the planet. Five Takeaways •       The Woolly Mammoth Meatball. Somers's obsession began around 2022, when the Australian company Vow extracted DNA from a fossil and made a woolly mammoth meatball — which, because no one could be sure meat grown from DNA that old was safe, no one was allowed to eat. A forbidden food, conjured at great expense: to Somers, the perfect emblem of an industry that was always “a microcosm of what is going on culturally” — a gold-rush mentality among investors, a tech product perpetually not-quite-arriving, and a carnival of curiosities around the edges. It speaks, she says, directly to our AI moment: massive hype, cons and bills of goods sold in the meantime, and the actual product arriving years late in a different form. Her quest began with the simplest motive in journalism: “I just really wanna taste it.”•       The Technology Works. Nobody's Clamoring. The scientific story is genuine: Mark Post grew the first lab burger from cow shoulder cells in 2013 — two years' work, $330,000, bankrolled by Sergey Brin, eaten live at London's Riverside Studios — and the field has since scaled from petri dishes to bioreactors the size of a beer brewery. “They can actually do the things that they say.” What's missing is everything downstream: a price point anywhere near conventional meat (two to four times as expensive), a trained workforce, and — the quiet killer — demand. “No one's clamoring for it.” The shuttered North Carolina factory Somers visited stands fully equipped and ready to run; it simply “didn't quite make it over the finish line.” Even MrBeast, blind-testing Upside Foods' cultivated chicken sandwich for millions of viewers, couldn't tell the difference — which made Somers, still untasted at the time, irrationally jealous.•       The Believer Collapse. The piece's centerpiece has a novelist's timing. The day before the industry's trade conference in North Carolina's Research Triangle — the unexpected hub, anchored by the Bezos Center for Sustainable Protein at NC State — Somers drove forty-five minutes into the countryside to check on Believer Meats' multimillion-dollar facility and found it shuttered. The next day, sitting among the assembled scientists and funders, the news broke: the company that was the industry's best hope for reaching the market had gone bankrupt. Gossip filled every conference break; the postmortem was unanimous — they scaled too quickly, pushed by backers to move faster than they were ready to — and the mood sank, with two full days of programming about “the future of the industry” still to run. Andrew's question wrote itself: after The Ten Year Affair, has America's affair with artificial meat ended? She tasted the meat. The affair, they agreed, is concluded.•       The Pincer. Two forces squeezed the industry simultaneously. The venture capitalists “abandoned ship once they saw how hard it was going to be” — no blame assigned, exactly: “they did what they do. They sought to make money. They bailed.” And conservative legislatures turned a tiny industry into a wedge issue, conjuring “the straw man of lab-grown meat enthusiasts who are going to take away your beef burgers” — laughable, Somers argues, since the industry “poses so little threat that it's kind of laughable that it's been legislated against at all. It's almost total theater.” Bezos's $30 million center gets measured credit — real work, smart people, and a drop in the bucket. Her deeper conclusion cuts against food moralism: personal responsibility won't slow climate change. The fix must come from legislation and innovation, “because you can't talk people out of wanting a burger.” The likely future, per past guest George Monbiot's territory: a hybrid — regenerative agriculture plus alternative proteins plus policy.•       The Sumo Orange. Is this an obituary? Somers thinks not — Andrew's analogy: AI survived its own winters in the eighties and nineties, and downturns are chapters, not endings. The scientists are still at work, the innovations will surface elsewhere in food systems and medicine, and “nothing... will go to waste.” Her ending makes the point by indirection: at a Mission Barns tasting at the Berkeley Bowl — Andrew's favorite store on earth — a marketing director walked her through the produce section and pressed two oranges on her. Walking away, she ate a Sumo orange: not naturally occurring, a hybrid born of food science, “engineered to be delicious and... engineered to be resilient.” Look what technology can give us, she concluded — “it's not so dark.” Proust had his madeleine; Somers has her orange. The start of the National Football League regular season begins late next week. Those of us who play fantasy football and care about winning should hunker down quickly and get ready for your annual player draft in the coming days. Statistically speaking, I am considered an average fantasy football player. This will be the 15th year of participating in a league run by my former boss along with several of his college friends.  Fortunately, our league is 100% for fun with no money involved. My first and last experience in a for-profit league definitely did not go very well. Decades ago, a team “owned” by me and a couple of co-workers lost “only” $60 ($20 apiece) at the end of the season.  However, the last place team in league netted a shocking loss of more than $200. I had no idea before the season started that teams could win or lose that much money. Live and learn. That long-ago season nearly ruined how I watched NFL games.  While formerly a casual observer of televised football games on Sunday, my brain began to race like a calculator while watching the NFL that season. For example, I remember cringing after Dallas Cowboys quarterback Danny White (the other fantasy team’s starting quarterback) completed a lengthy 65-yard touchdown pass. Ouch!  That was a 12-point play for Danny White – six points for the TD pass plus another point for each ten yards gained on that touchdown play.   Every TV “game break” NFL scoring highlight caused more temporary anxiety each Sunday. That television break could yield exceptional joy (a player on our fantasy team just scored!) or sadness (the other team’s player had scored). My wife quickly noticed my change in demeanor and suggested it was time to end the misery after one season. She was absolutely right. I stayed away from the fantasy football scene for a long time. A former boss was nice enough to offer a spot in his “for fun only” Fantasy Football league 15 years ago.  His group prefers to take online jabs at one another rather than raiding each other’s wallets at the end of the season. My current team (named “SwampGas”) has won 51% of its games with 131 wins and 128 losses over the years. That makes me about as average at Fantasy Football as anyone can possibly get. Oh, no!  I accidentally missed this year’s draft!  The computer just selected my players?!! I am in a bit of shock today.  For the first time, I was not present at my computer to make my own player selections for our league’s annual Yahoo! Sports fantasy football player draft. OK, I openly admit to being a “control” type of personality. Sink or swim, I prefer doing my own research and selecting the players for my fantasy football team on draft night. When you’re not at your computer on draft night, you lose the right to complain. In your absence, the Yahoo! Sports computer will select a player in each round once it is your turn.  In true Wile E. Coyote Super Genius fashion, the computer selects what it believes to be the best player available in each round. After this year’s draft ended, that same $#@! Yahoo computer then assigned my team a “C-” score! I reviewed my 2026 computer-selected team today and now understand why I received such a lousy grade.  After seeing my team’s draft picks for the first time, I have two words for that Yahoo! Sports computer. You’re fired! We will now get to see if the computer’s picks produce better results than my own measly 51% career winning percentage. Why was I so unhappy with the computer’s draft picks? My fantasy football team received the infamous #10 pick in our ten-team league.  That meant that I picked last during the first round but then first in the second round.  There are just 30 seconds to make each selection.  That doesn’t leave much time to think.  Then again, aren’t today’s AI computers supposed to be faster and smarter than us? After making two quick early picks, you must wait again until making the final draft pick of Round 3 and the first pick in Round 4. Statistically speaking, the winners in most ten-team fantasy football leagues generally come from team owners picking from the #4, 5, or 6 draft position.  That allows a little bit of time to review your next pick and observe any developing trends. I could almost feel sorry for the Yahoo! Sports computer. But I don’t, though.  It made a number of really questionable selections. My third draft guideline (see below) was to draft players on top NFL teams which, generally speaking, also score the most points over the course of a season. The Yahoo! Sports computer picked not one but two Washington Commanders players. Washington was horrible last season and finished with a 5-12 record.  They aren’t expected to be much better in 2026, either. The computer also selected one player from the woeful 3-14 New York Jets and another from the wayward 5-12 Cleveland Browns. It selected zero players from either the Super Bowl champion Seattle Seahawks or runner-up New England Patriots.  My team had no players from high scoring teams like the Detroit Lions or the Los Angeles Rams, either. Time to get to work on repairing this year’s Fantasy Football team! Today, I made a couple of roster moves to add 38-year old quarterback Mathew Stafford from the Los Angeles Rams as a back-up (behind Jalen Hurts – the computer’s selection for my starting quarterback). I then added Detroit’s booming field goal specialist Jake Bates to replace Minnesota kicker Will Reichard.  Nothing against the Vikings kicker.  I simply wanted at least one player representing the Detroit Lions on my fantasy team roster this season. My third move today was exceptionally questionable, but I have my reasons. Pittsburgh Steelers 7th round selection Eli Heidenreich grew up in the Steel City. He accepted an offer from the US Naval Academy to play college football.  Heidenreich’s versatility at Navy to run, catch passes coming out of the backfield, and return punts and kick-offs made him a standout college football player. Eli Heidenreich will be required to report to the US Marine Corps to fulfill his military obligations after his NFL career ends. Let’s hope that won’t happen for a number of years. I dropped Indianapolis Colts wide receiver Josh Downs in order to make room for Eli Heidenreich on my roster today.  The Steelers listed him as a third-string running back.  Unless both of the other running backs get hurt, Eli Heidenreich is unlikely to play a lot this season. That’s OK with me.  I simply liked his story and wanted a guy like that on my roster for good vibes. More Fantasy Football tips from ol’ SwampSwami Let’s roll-out my annual Top Ten suggestions to help you enjoy this upcoming NFL fantasy football season: Team name – Make sure that you are happy with the sound of your team's name.  You're going to live with that name for the entire fantasy football season! Spend some time to research players and teams – You can always pay $10-15 at the local drugstore to buy one of those Fantasy Football magazines.  Sadly, their advice is usually no better than your own.  Save the money and read a few sports websites, but, in the end, you must trust your gut! Determine a draft strategy – As stated earlier, my personal strategy is to (for the most part) select the best offensive players from the NFL teams which you expect to score the most points this season.  I might grab one of the best players from a mid-level team, but you should refrain taking more than one player from recently offensively weak football teams (such as the Cardinals, Jets, and Dolphins).  Consider yourself warned. Do – Pick at least one player from NFL teams which you personally like and root for.  In my case, I am a longtime New Orleans Saints and Pittsburgh Steelers fan. I try to makes sure my fantasy football team includes one Saints and/or Steelers player on the roster each season.  Follow your heart with at least a few of your picks. Don't – Select any player from any NFL team which you personally despise.  In my case, I avoid Dallas Cowboys players like the plague.  Do not force yourself to root for players on your least favorite NFL football team(s).  The object is to win, but you still want to have fun this season, too! Don't waste picks on your defense and a kicker until your last few selections.  There are precious few defenses and kickers which are reliable difference makers.  Resist the temptation to draft a defense or placekicker too early.  You may be sorry later. Injuries happen.  No later than Thursday afternoon each week, make sure to check to see if any of your starting players have been injured during the previous week’s games and are not expected to play in the coming weekend.  If you're unsure about an injured player, use a substitute from your roster in the upcoming week.  If the player's injury turns out to be season-ending, drop that player immediately and find an undrafted player from your league's free agent list.  Stay vigilant about injuries to your players! Keep an eye open for undrafted rookies during Week 1 and 2 – Look for any rookies who seem to be making an early impact for their team.  Grab them early in the season and dump a lukewarm bench warmer in the same position.  This can pay dividends for you down the stretch as some fantasy football teams in your league may be hesitant to draft rookies. Start slow but finish fast – Set-up your fantasy team to have a positive finish at the end of the season.  Sometimes, your team may get off to a great start but spirals downward near the end of the regular season due to injuries and bad luck.  Stay focused on putting together a solid squad on the field by mid-season.  You can rally down the stretch and still win during the playoffs! Vow to have more fun!  Sometimes, your team will perform well.  Other years, things can quickly go wrong.  That's the nature of the game, so don't despair if your team stinks this season.  You can even have fun by becoming a spoiler down the stretch and knocking off one or more teams striving to make the playoffs!   Best of luck this season with your Fantasy Football League team! Day 2910 – Wisdom Nuggets – Psalm 145:1-7 Daily Wisdom Wisdom-Trek Podcast Script - Day 2908 Welcome to Wisdom-Trek with Gramps! I am Guthrie Chamberlain, and we are on Day 2910 of our Trek. The Purpose of Wisdom-Trek is to create a legacy of wisdom, to seek out discernment and insights, and to boldly grow where few have chosen to grow before. The Title for today's Wisdom-Trek is: The Unsearchable Majesty – Passing the Torch of Praise Across Generations On our previous expedition, on Day Two Thousand Nine Hundred Eight, we concluded our study of Psalm One Hundred Forty-Four with a breathtaking vision of kingdom flourishing. We listened as King David moved out of the smoky, chaotic fray of battle, praying for sturdy sons, elegant daughters, overflowing barns, and safe city streets, crowning his prayer with that unforgettable, majestic beatitude: “Joyful indeed are those whose God is the Lord!” Today, as we step onto a glorious new summit along our multi-month trek through the Book of Psalms, we advance directly into Psalm One Hundred Forty-Five, verses one through seven. This psalm marks a monumental milestone in our entire series. It is the very last psalm in the Psalter explicitly attributed to King David, and it functions as a grand, royal gateway into the final doxology of the Old Testament. In the preceding psalms—from Psalm One Hundred Forty through One Hundred Forty-Four—we heard David crying out in intense distress, begging for rescue from violent men, hidden nets, and deceptive tongues. But here, in Psalm One Hundred Forty-Five, the prayers for deliverance fall silent, and pure, uninhibited, kingdom praise takes center stage. David lays down his military sword, picks up his golden harp, and leads the entire cosmos in an eternal song of adoration. The first segment is: The Vow of the Viceroy: Exalting the Supreme King Let us open our hearts to the opening lines of this magnificent acrostic hymn, as recorded in the New Living Translation, grouping together the contiguous, deeply connected thoughts found in verse one and verse two. I will exalt you, my God and King, and praise your name forever and ever. I will praise you every day; yes, I will praise you forever. David opens this royal anthem with a passionate, deeply personal commitment, shouting, “I will exalt you, my God and King, and praise your name forever and ever. I will praise you every day; yes, I will praise you forever.” To fully appreciate the profound, revolutionary nature of these opening words, we must view them through the fascinating lens of the Ancient Israelite divine-council worldview. In the ancient Near East, earthly kings routinely claimed divine status for themselves. Pagan rulers built massive monuments, claiming to be absolute lords over their territory, demanding that their subjects bow before their supreme authority. But here stands King David—the undisputed, victorious monarch of Israel, the ruler of an expanding empire—and what does he do? He looks up into the heavens, and addresses Yahweh directly as “my God and King.” David recognizes a fundamental cosmic truth: his own royal authority is merely derivative. He is not the ultimate sovereign; he is merely the earthly viceroy, the covenant servant of the true King who sits enthroned above the celestial assembly of heaven. Notice, also, the dynamic rhythm of David's devotional life expressed in these two verses. He bridges the immediate present with the infinite future. He declares that he will praise God “every day”—establishing a discipline of consistent, daily worship along the dusty trails of life—while simultaneously declaring that this praise will endure “forever and ever.” David understands that praising the name of Yahweh—which represents His revealed character, His covenant reputation, and His supreme authority—is not a temporary earthly chore. It is the primary, joyful occupation of human beings and heavenly hosts alike, stretching past the boundaries of mortality directly into eternity. The second segment is: The Unsearchable Realm: Cosmic Greatness Beyond Measure The narrative of David's praise expands rapidly outward from his personal devotion to the infinite reality of God's nature, as recorded in verse three. Great is the Lord! He is most worthy of praise! No one can measure his greatness. David proclaims with unshakeable conviction, “Great is the Lord! He is most worthy of praise! No one can measure his greatness.” This singular verse serves as the foundational theological anchor for the entire psalm. When David exclaims that Yahweh is “great” and “most worthy of praise,” he is making a bold, cosmic comparison against all other powers in existence. In the ancient Israelite worldview, the cosmos was populated by various spiritual beings—angels, guardians, and fallen principalities. But Yahweh stands in a category completely by Himself. He is not merely the chief deity among many; He is the uncreated Creator, the absolute Master of the divine council, and the Lord of all earthly nations. Consider that remarkable phrase: “No one can measure his greatness.” In the original Hebrew, it literally reads, his greatness has no searching out. Every created entity in the universe—whether a human king, a mighty mountain, a blazing star, or a high-ranking angelic spirit—has boundaries, dimensions, and limitations. They can be measured, mapped, and comprehended. But the greatness of Yahweh is unfathomable, bottomless, and infinite! You can swim in the ocean of His glory for ten thousand years, and you will never hit bottom. Because His majesty is completely beyond human and angelic measurement, the praise offered to Him can never be exhausted. There will always be new depths of His character to discover, and new reasons to lift our voices in awe. The third segment is: The Legacy of Praise: Passing the Torch Across Generations Having established the unsearchable greatness of the King, David turns his attention to how this glorious reality is transmitted through human history, linking his contiguous thoughts together in verse four and verse five. Let each generation tell its children of your mighty acts; let them proclaim your power. I will meditate on your majestic, glorious splendor and your wonderful miracles. David outlines the divine relay race of truth, praying, “Let each generation tell its children of your mighty acts; let them proclaim your power. I will meditate on your majestic, glorious splendor and your wonderful miracles.” Here, right at the center of Psalm One Hundred Forty-Five, we encounter the very heart and soul of our Wisdom-Trek mission: creating a living legacy! David realizes that the incredible truths of God's redemptive power must never be locked away in the past, nor can they be assumed to automatically transfer to the future. Faithfulness requires an intentional, intergenerational handoff. One generation must stand face-to-face with the next generation, actively recounting the “mighty acts” and “power” of Yahweh. In ancient Israel, this meant teaching children about the deliverance from Egypt, the splitting of the Red Sea, the thunderous revelation at Mount Sinai, and the faithful provision in the wilderness. For us today, it means testifying to our children and grandchildren about the ultimate victory of King Jesus, and sharing the concrete ways God has proven faithful in our own family histories. Notice, however, that David does not view this intergenerational legacy as a cold, academic history lesson. Look at verse five! He combines public proclamation with deep, quiet, personal contemplation, declaring, “I will meditate on your majestic, glorious splendor and your wonderful miracles.” The Hebrew phrasing here—hod ve-hadar—describes the radiant, terrifying beauty and regal dignity of a monarch sitting in His heavenly throne room. David takes time to slow down his racing mind, fixing his thoughts on the dazzling sple“dor of God's character. True legacy flows out of deep, private meditation. When we spend time contemplating the awe-inspiring miracles of God in the secret place, our public testimony to the next generation gains an irresistible, vibrant warmth. Full Transcript Below: Listen to the Holy SpiritBy: Michelle Lazurek Bible Reading:“The Lord makes firm the steps of the one who delights in him.” - Psalm 37:23 A couple of years ago, I started a new medication. This medication had side effects, one of which was nausea, and I had a lot of it. In addition, I felt it was affecting my throat, as I kept feeling a lump there. Because I have had hypothyroidism for many years, my doctor wanted to check to see if it was causing harm to my thyroid, and she wanted to see if it was cancer. She ordered an ultrasound to check it. No cancer! But the test results revealed I probably had an autoimmune disease that had gone undiagnosed for some time. This was difficult news to hear, to say the least. After I visited with the doctor, I got into my car and drove to the grocery store. Just as I was getting into the car after getting some groceries, I hit my head on the rearview mirror. I bawled my eyes out for the next half hour in my car. A myriad of thoughts ran through my head: I won’t live long enough to see my kids grow up or their grandkids. God didn’t care about my health. God didn’t care about me. All I had done was for nothing. After I had my emotional meltdown, I went back into the store. Walking down the aisle, I sensed the Holy Spirit speak to my heart: “I tell you when you’re done. Doctors don’t tell you when you are done, I tell you when you are done.” Immediately, all those lies that filled my head were gone. Because I regularly practice listening for the Holy Spirit, I was in tune and aware enough of how God speaks to me that when He spoke, I knew it was Him. I not only knew from my previous encounters with the Spirit, but also being anchored in God’s word, that when I tested the words I heard, they aligned with Scripture. Those words inspired me not to give up. I changed my diet and tweaked my exercise routine. I started taking supplements, upped my water intake—anything I could do to live as healthily as possible. If you are unsure whether you are hearing from the Holy Spirit, ask yourself these questions: As you read Scripture, does a verse speak to your soul in a way it hasn’t before (especially if you’ve read the scripture before)? Do you sense the Holy Spirit speaking to you during your prayer time? If he does, write down what you believe he is saying. If you have experienced either of these things, test what you are hearing with others you trust (they can be in your church or not). Community is key to sharpening your ability to hear from the Holy Spirit. When we mature in our spiritual walks, we rely more on the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit's voice becomes clearer to us the more we listen to it and obey what it says. Not only is it important to listen to the Holy Spirit, but it also helps to dispel the lies that Satan plants in our minds. Just as I believed the lie that my life was over simply because of a doctor's diagnosis, the Holy Spirit had more to say to me on that subject. The minute I heard those words in the spirit, all those lies disappeared. I was able to replace the truth of the above verse with the lies that my life would be cut short. Are you someone who hears from the Holy Spirit? Have you had encounters like this where the words you hear from him align with Scripture, changing not only your life but the lives of those who hear them? Vow to be more attuned to the spirit. Pray and ask the Holy Spirit to speak to you in ways that only you will understand. When you hear those words, be obedient to do as they say. When we align our minds and hearts with the Holy Spirit, we solidify our identity in Christ and can respond to the still, small voice in our lives. Father, let us listen to you. Over a period of four months Gugulethu, Nyanga and Delft in the Western Cape, were terrorised by a violent and coldblooded gang. Among the victims was an entire family slain in their beds as they slept. When a seasoned investigator was put on the case, he started to make progress almost immediately, and soon realised that rather than a highly organised group of criminals, these crimes were being committed by two specific individuals with the occasional addition of random cohorts. "Under a hood" is an old school wrestling term that means working under a mask. The mask is a big part of pro wrestling, especially in lucha libre where it is sacred.
