The Holy Spirit still speaks, guides, comforts, and anchors believers in truth today. In this devotional on listening to the Holy Spirit, Michelle Lazurek reflects on a frightening health scare that led her into fear, anxiety, and catastrophic thinking—until God’s gentle voice broke through the lies. Rooted in Psalms 37:23, this message reminds us that God establishes the steps of those who delight in Him and that the Holy Spirit helps believers discern truth in difficult seasons. Through personal testimony and biblical encouragement, this devotional explores spiritual discernment, obedience, and learning to recognize God’s voice amid fear and uncertainty. It highlights how Scripture, prayer, and Christian community help believers test what they hear and grow more sensitive to the Spirit’s leading. As we mature spiritually, the Holy Spirit becomes not only our Comforter but also the One who silences lies and strengthens our identity in Christ. Highlights The Holy Spirit often speaks peace into moments filled with fear and confusion. God’s voice will always align with Scripture and His character. Spiritual maturity grows through consistent prayer, obedience, and time in God’s Word. Fear and negative thinking lose power when replaced with biblical truth. Christian community helps believers discern and confirm God’s leading. God—not circumstances or diagnoses—holds authority over our lives and future. Listening to the Holy Spirit requires intentional stillness and spiritual attentiveness. Do you want to listen ad-free? Full Transcript Below: Listen to the Holy SpiritBy: Michelle Lazurek Bible Reading:“The Lord makes firm the steps of the one who delights in him.” - Psalm 37:23 A couple of years ago, I started a new medication. This medication had side effects, one of which was nausea, and I had a lot of it. In addition, I felt it was affecting my throat, as I kept feeling a lump there. Because I have had hypothyroidism for many years, my doctor wanted to check to see if it was causing harm to my thyroid, and she wanted to see if it was cancer. She ordered an ultrasound to check it. No cancer! But the test results revealed I probably had an autoimmune disease that had gone undiagnosed for some time. This was difficult news to hear, to say the least. After I visited with the doctor, I got into my car and drove to the grocery store. Just as I was getting into the car after getting some groceries, I hit my head on the rearview mirror. I bawled my eyes out for the next half hour in my car. A myriad of thoughts ran through my head: I won’t live long enough to see my kids grow up or their grandkids. God didn’t care about my health. God didn’t care about me. All I had done was for nothing. After I had my emotional meltdown, I went back into the store. Walking down the aisle, I sensed the Holy Spirit speak to my heart: “I tell you when you’re done. Doctors don’t tell you when you are done, I tell you when you are done.” Immediately, all those lies that filled my head were gone. Because I regularly practice listening for the Holy Spirit, I was in tune and aware enough of how God speaks to me that when He spoke, I knew it was Him. I not only knew from my previous encounters with the Spirit, but also being anchored in God’s word, that when I tested the words I heard, they aligned with Scripture. Those words inspired me not to give up. I changed my diet and tweaked my exercise routine. I started taking supplements, upped my water intake—anything I could do to live as healthily as possible. If you are unsure whether you are hearing from the Holy Spirit, ask yourself these questions: As you read Scripture, does a verse speak to your soul in a way it hasn’t before (especially if you’ve read the scripture before)? Do you sense the Holy Spirit speaking to you during your prayer time? If he does, write down what you believe he is saying. If you have experienced either of these things, test what you are hearing with others you trust (they can be in your church or not). Community is key to sharpening your ability to hear from the Holy Spirit. When we mature in our spiritual walks, we rely more on the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit's voice becomes clearer to us the more we listen to it and obey what it says. Not only is it important to listen to the Holy Spirit, but it also helps to dispel the lies that Satan plants in our minds. Just as I believed the lie that my life was over simply because of a doctor's diagnosis, the Holy Spirit had more to say to me on that subject. The minute I heard those words in the spirit, all those lies disappeared. I was able to replace the truth of the above verse with the lies that my life would be cut short. Are you someone who hears from the Holy Spirit? Have you had encounters like this where the words you hear from him align with Scripture, changing not only your life but the lives of those who hear them? Vow to be more attuned to the spirit. Pray and ask the Holy Spirit to speak to you in ways that only you will understand. When you hear those words, be obedient to do as they say. When we align our minds and hearts with the Holy Spirit, we solidify our identity in Christ and can respond to the still, small voice in our lives. Father, let us listen to you. Make your voice unmistakable in our lives. Let us be people who are known to obey you rather than the lies in our minds. Amen. Intersecting Faith & Life: Have you heard from the Holy Spirit? What did he say? Were you obedient to what you heard? Over a period of four months Gugulethu, Nyanga and Delft in the Western Cape, were terrorised by a violent and coldblooded gang. Among the victims was an entire family slain in their beds as they slept. When a seasoned investigator was put on the case, he started to make progress almost immediately, and soon realised that rather than a highly organised group of criminals, these crimes were being committed by two specific individuals with the occasional addition of random cohorts. Of those two, one would become the youngest offender to receive the longest sentence ever handed down in the Western Cape. - 24-hr trauma helpline 082-821-3447 - Support the show on Patreon https://www.patreon.com/truecrimesa - Support the show on PayPal https://www.paypal.me/truecrimesa - Get TCSA and General True Crime Merch on https://sacriminologist.co.za/shop/ 10% off with code TCSA sitewide - Disclaimer voiceover: Karabo Peter - Production of intro and outro music: Botshelo Moekeletsi at the VOW 88.1 studios and produced solely for the use of True Crime South Africa Instagram · Pinterest · Facebook · YouTube · Twitter · LinkedIn
The Supreme Voices never quite broke through during the Golden Age of Gospel Music, but with great tracks like “I Made a Vow,” it's clear they probably should have been stars.
"Under a hood" is an old school wrestling term that means working under a mask. The mask is a big part of pro wrestling, especially in lucha libre where it is sacred. Some songs have their own masks, so to speak, in that the titles are not found anywhere in the lyrics. On this episode, Andrew and returning guest Rich Kraetsch (Voices of Wrestling) play songs that fall into that category. Artists played include Third Eye Blind, Kasabian, Massive Attack, Little Brother, Public Image Ltd., Sunny Day Real Estate, Faith No More, and many more. A transitional champion in wrestling is one that only holds the title for a short amount of time before they drop it to someone else. Typically it's a way to get the belt from one wrestler to another without them wrestling each other, or in cases where the title win is the most important part of the story as opposed to the actual reign itself. On this episode, Andrew and first-time guest Anthony Puhl (a.k.a. foolinc from the VOW Discord) look at bands who have had transitional bandmates, so to speak, where certain members are only in the group for a short amount of time. Artists played include The Clash, Thin Lizzy, Blink-182, Metallica, Iron Maiden, Depeche Mode, The Moody Blues, and many more. These band members are here for a good time, not a long time, so listen and enjoy!Theme song: "Hemispheres" by Silent PartnerBluesky: @MusicoftheMat / @justandrewAll VOW podcasts, articles, previews, and reviews: VoicesofWrestling.comJoin the VOW Discord to discuss Music of the Mat and other shows/topics: VoicesofWrestling.com/DiscordDonate to Music of the Mat and other VOW podcasts: VoicesofWrestling.com/DonateAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

WrestleMania Weekend is the busiest weekend of the year when it comes to wrestling. Almost every promotion under the sun descends on the city where WrestleMania is being held and runs their own shows, overloading the schedule with more wrestling than you can shake a stick at. On this episode, Andrew and first-time guest Case Lowe (Voices of Wrestling, Open the Voice Gate) focus on the "mania" of Mania Weekend, playing songs about mental illness and having an open and honest discussion about some of their own mental health issues. Artists played include Phoebe Bridgers, Militarie Gun, Alice Cooper, Jane's Addiction, Paramore, Embrace, and many more. A heavy episode at times, but it's still probably a more enjoyable experience than some of the shows happening during Mania Weekend.Theme song: "Hemispheres" by Silent PartnerTwitter: @_InYourCase / @openvoicegateBluesky: @MusicoftheMat / @justandrew / @erinquinnListen to Open the Voice Gate/Those Days: https://redcircle.com/shows/open-the-voice-gateCase's interviews on Q101: youtube.com/@Q101All VOW podcasts, articles, previews, and reviews: VoicesofWrestling.comJoin the VOW Discord to discuss Music of the Mat and other shows/topics: VoicesofWrestling.com/DiscordDonate to Music of the Mat and other VOW podcasts: VoicesofWrestling.com/DonateAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

Once upon a time, there was an indie wrestling company in Texas called WrestleCircus. It had a circus theme with appropriately named events and championships. It also booked a whole lot of prominent indie names who would later become regulars in AEW and WWE. But like many indie companies, it went the way of the dodo. Returning guest Erin Quinn went to several WrestleCircus shows back in the day, making her the ideal guest for this episode. Andrew and Erin go under the big top and play songs that have animals in the title. Artists played include Jethro Tull, Namoli Brennet, Lou Reed, The HU, Was (Not Was), Matthew Sweet, Kate Bush, Geggy Tah, and more. No animals were harmed in the making of this episode (just the host's patience when listening to that Lou Reed song).Theme song: "Hemispheres" by Silent PartnerTwitter: @MsErinQuinnBluesky: @MusicoftheMat / @justandrew / @erinquinnAll VOW podcasts, articles, previews, and reviews: VoicesofWrestling.comJoin the VOW Discord to discuss Music of the Mat and other shows/topics: VoicesofWrestling.com/DiscordDonate to Music of the Mat and other VOW podcasts: VoicesofWrestling.com/DonateAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

Send us a text! We'd love to hear your thoughts on the show.If you love historical fiction that uncovers the hidden stories of ordinary people caught in extraordinary circumstances, this episode is going to pull you right in.In today's conversation on The Resilient Writers Radio Show, I'm joined by historical novelist Diane Shotton, author of Motty's Vow and her latest novel, The Dictograph Case. Diane writes the kind of fiction that shines a light on forgotten people and overlooked moments in history—and this story began with one of those astonishing discoveries that simply won't let a writer go.Back in 1999, while researching her family history in a local library, Diane stumbled across a newspaper story about seven men accused of treason during World War I for talking among themselves in a shoe shop. The case involved a “Dictograph”—an early listening device used to secretly record their conversations—which were then used against them in court. Three of the men, all over the age of 65 and respected in their community, ended up in jail. Diane knew immediately this was a story she had to tell. What makes The Dictograph Case especially compelling is the way Diane blends fact and fiction. At the core is a real historical event, but around that she builds a richly imagined mystery with noir undertones, a slow-burn romance, and a town full of secrets. We talk about the choices she made as a novelist: why she told the story through Michael, the grandson of the shoe shop owner, and how Olivia—whose father was killed during the events surrounding the case—became an essential part of the narrative.Diane also shares some of the craft challenges behind writing the book, including working with dual point of view for the first time, trusting readers to pick up on clues without over-explaining, and figuring out how to raise the stakes for the antagonist so the mystery had real tension. It's a thoughtful look at how historical fiction is shaped not just by research, but by storytelling decisions on the page.We also talk about the delicate balance between truth and invention. Diane is a genealogist, so facts matter deeply to her—but in this case, fiction allowed her to explore what history left behind. In reality, the town seemed to move on and never speak of the incident again. In the novel, Diane imagines what it might look like if the emotional and social consequences lingered for decades. Our conversation also touches on the eerie relevance of the novel's themes today: free speech, patriotism, public pressure, and the ways fear can be used to divide communities. This is one of those historical novels that doesn't just immerse you in another time—it also throws light on our own.
The ten count is a staple of pro wrestling matches: A wrestler has until the count of ten to get back in the ring or get up off the mat, or else they will lose the match. It's a way to add some more drama and suspense to a match, though it seems count outs don't happen nearly as often as they used to back in the day. On this episode, Andrew and returning guest Fred Morlan (The Good, The Bad & The Hungee) start the ten count, playing songs sequentially with the numbers one, two, three, etc. in the title, all the way up to ten. Artists played include Ben Folds Five, Sneaker Pimps, Rufus Thomas, Southern Culture on the Skids, Babymetal, Styx, Jenny Lewis, and many more. Get back in the ring and beat the count so you can listen to this episode!Theme song: ""Hemispheres"" by Silent PartnerBluesky: @MusicoftheMat / @justandrew / @FlagrantStatsListen to Fred's radio show: https://medialex.us/shows/marconis-bad-dream/All VOW podcasts, articles, previews, and reviews: VoicesofWrestling.comJoin the VOW Discord to discuss Music of the Mat and other shows/topics: VoicesofWrestling.com/DiscordDonate to Music of the Mat and other VOW podcasts: VoicesofWrestling.com/DonateOur Sponsors:* Support our sponsor BetterHelp: https://www.betterhelp.comAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

"The life you want is not waiting for more effort. It's waiting for you to break the vow." Why do we keep repeating the same patterns in relationships, money, success, or self-worth, even after doing the inner work? In this powerful episode of SoulTalk Podcast, transformational teacher Kute Blackson reveals a hidden force shaping your life: unconscious vows formed in childhood. These invisible contracts were created as survival strategies when we were young; promises we made to stay safe, loved, and accepted. But years later, they can quietly control our decisions, sabotage our growth, and keep us repeating the same cycles. Kute uncovers five powerful unconscious vows that may be running your life without you realizing it from the vow of self-sacrifice to the vow of invisibility, and explains how they influence your identity, relationships, and success. More importantly, he shows you how to identify and release these hidden agreements so you can reclaim your freedom, step into your authentic power, and finally create the life your soul is calling you to live. If you've ever wondered why certain patterns keep repeating despite your best intentions, this episode will open your eyes to the deeper truth and give you the courage to rewrite your destiny. Timestamps (00:01:10) – Why we keep repeating the same life patterns (00:02:00) – Kute's personal story about playing small and his wake-up call (00:03:10) – Understanding the "Invisible Contracts" running your life (00:05:00) – Why you're not stuck because of lack of discipline (00:06:00) – How unconscious vows are formed in childhood (00:07:40) – Why these vows shape identity, behavior, and destiny (00:09:00) – Kute's personal breakthrough about success and loyalty to his father (00:11:45) – Vow #1: The Vow of Self-Sacrifice (00:14:20) – Vow #2: The Vow of Invisibility (00:15:30) – Vow #3: The Vow of Hyper-Independence (00:19:20) – Vow #4: The Vow of Struggle (00:21:30) – Vow #5: The Vow of Control (00:23:20) – Why affirmations alone don't break subconscious vows (00:24:40) – Step 1: Identify the repeating pattern in your life (00:25:40) – Step 2: Trace the origin of the vow in childhood (00:26:20) – Step 3: Name the vow and bring it into awareness (00:26:45) – Step 4: Release the vow and choose a new identity (00:27:40) – Breaking generational patterns and rewriting your future In This Episode You Will Learn Why repeating life patterns are not a lack of discipline or motivation. How childhood survival strategies become unconscious vows. The 5 invisible contracts that silently shape your decisions. Why success, love, or abundance can feel unsafe on a subconscious level. Practical steps to recognize and release limiting vows. How awareness and compassion can transform your identity and future Some Questions I Ask: What repeating patterns in your life might be connected to unconscious vows you made in childhood? Where in your life are you staying small, invisible, or holding yourself back to maintain love or approval? Have you developed hyper-independence as a way to protect yourself from disappointment or abandonment? In what ways might loyalty to your family, past, or identity be limiting your growth and success today? What new conscious choice or vow could you make today to align your life with your true purpose? Get in Touch: Create a life that is a masterpiece. A money mark is someone with a lot of money who runs a wrestling show or starts a promotion because they want to be one of the boys and be a big shot in the wrestling biz. It's not a good thing to be, either because you won't have the wrestlers' respect or you'll blow all your money and fail spectacularly. Typically both. On this episode, Andrew and returning guest Rich Latta (One Nation Radio) play a selection of songs about money and all the tropes and themes associated with it. Artists played include ZZ Top, Jay-Z, Tower of Power, Madonna, Camp Lo, Fitz and the Tantrums, Rick Ross, Bone Thugs-n-Harmony, Charley Crockett, and many more. Hello to you listening in Olympia, Washington! Coming to you from Whidbey Island, Washington this is Stories From Women Who Walk with 60 Seconds (and a bit more) for Wednesdays on Whidbey and your host, Diane Wyzga. I am a storyteller of the old school. What do I mean? For over 30 years I've taught (and continue to teach) my clients and students the same thing: “Put down the paper and nobody gets hurt!” Why? Because storytellers have something to say that comes from their aliveness, which is what people most want to feel and connect with. Sharing our stories out loud brings them to light and life, and encourages us to do what most folks fear more than snakes: stand up and speak up in public. Story spoken aloud is what we leave of ourselves in another person. A story is an intimate lasting legacy, a permanent inheritance much like a vow or an oath. When we share our stories out loud, we connect with each other, we belong to each other. We might not realize it but we are creating a verbal promise, a vow, an oath of belonging. Think about how many times we've heard someone say, "Repeat after me: I solemnly swear..." Marrying couples pledge faithfulness through the challenges and joys of marriage. Lawyers uphold the law, maintain client confidentiality, and act as an officer of the court. Doctors focus on ethics, patient care and societal responsibilities. Politicians preserve and defend the Constitution. US military support and defend the Constitution against all enemies. Immigrants becoming US citizens swear the Oath of Allegiance to the United States during a formal naturalization ceremony. From the time we are children in school we recite The Pledge of Allegiance, a patriotic promise of loyalty to the United States flag and the republic for which it stands. What happens when we share our stories out loud? They become real. We say what we mean, we mean what we say. We—and those hearing us—know what we stand for and what we won't stand for. Yes, you might write a story but it needs to be shared out loud to enrich and include the wider world. That's the legacy of the stories we leave in those who have heard them spoken aloud. Just like the opening match on a wrestling show has the important role of setting the tone, the main event has the important role of ending the show on a strong note. Not every wrestler can be a main eventer, but the ones who prove they belong are the ones who stay in that spotlight. The same can be said for the closing track on an album. Not every song works as an album closer, but the ones that do stand the test of time. On this episode, Andrew and returning guest JoJo Remy (Voices of Wrestling) play a selection of their favorite album closers, mostly classics but a few modern ones as well. Artists played include Todd Rundgren, The Raconteurs, The Who, Superorganism, UFO, The Flying Burrito Brothers, Pink Floyd, Muse, David Bowie, and many more. The lights are bright and everybody is listening, because it's time for the main event!Theme song: "Hemispheres" by Silent PartnerBluesky: @MusicoftheMat / @justandrew / @jojorunsAll VOW podcasts, articles, previews, and reviews: VoicesofWrestling.comJoin the VOW Discord to discuss Music of the Mat and other shows/topics: VoicesofWrestling.com/DiscordDonate to Music of the Mat and other VOW podcasts: VoicesofWrestling.com/DonateOur Sponsors:* Sign up and get 10% off at BetterHelp: https://www.betterhelp.comAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

You may have noticed a trend on social media the past few years of people praising something as "absolute cinema." Wrestling seems to be no different, as internet cinephiles are quick to scream "absolute cinema" at Roman Reigns staring at Jey Uso or Seth Rollins making a face. On this episode, Andrew and returning guest Paul Wedding will discuss some actual cinema, namely songs from movies. They could be songs made specifically for the movie's soundtrack, songs that are just in the movie and come from somewhere else, or film score. Artists played include Aimee Mann, Quincy Jones, Townes Van Zandt, Moby, Motörhead, Carly Simon, Roy Orbison, Geto Boys, and many more. With Japanese wrestling having an uncharacteristically quiet week, it's the perfect opportunity for us to take a look back at the best of 2025! Voices of Wrestling just rolled out its 2025 Match of the Year poll (always one of the coolest things the site does every year), and John is joined by four fellow voters: Joshi-ing Around's Tim Hunter, Social Suplex's Chris Whitehead, VOW's Sean Sedor and Brady from, uh, an organic cooking company? Anyway! All five of them go over their own personal ten favorite matches from 2025 in great detail, as it's basically 4+ hours of them raving about what they loved most in wrestling last year (and also throwing some shade about what they didn't love so much- ok, mostly just John does that). Then, as if that wasn't enough 2025 award audio for you, John also recorded 45 minutes of solo audio that's tacked onto the end where they go over their Wrestling Observer Newsletter awards ballot in detail, explaining who they voted and why for Flair/Thesz, Most Outstanding Wrestler, Best Promotion and a whole lot more!Voices of Wrestling 2025 MOTY: https://www.voicesofwrestling.com/2025motyJoshi-ing Around podcast: https://redcircle.com/shows/1309343e-3781-4750-9209-4efbc9976ab6Social Suplex newsletter: https://www.socialsuplex.com/newsletter/Follow Wrestling Omakase on Twitter: http://twitter.com/wrestleomakaseFollow John on BlueSky: https://bsky.app/profile/justoneenby.bsky.socialOur Sponsors:* Sign up and get 10% off at BetterHelp: https://www.betterhelp.comAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy
Editors - Arthur Tarnowski ACE, CCE and Véronique Barbe CCE After years of working in different cutting rooms across Montreal, Heated Rivalry editors Arthur Tarnowski and Véronique Barbe are finally skating on the same line for showrunner Jacob Tierney. But bringing the "spicy" subject matter of Rachel Reid's book series to tv audiences would be no small feat. It required the editors to find the right balance of tension, chemistry and character within and around the steamy sexual encounters of the shows main characters. Heated Rivalry follows the lives of two budding hockey superstars, Canadian Shane Hollander and Russian Ilya Rozanov. Before becoming pro hockey players, the two meet as competitors at an international hockey competition. Six months later they would be drafted by two rival teams, the Montreal Metros and the Boston Raiders. Although their on-ice rivalry is amplified by media coverage and public perception, the two develop a private, initially casual sexual relationship that continues intermittently over several years as they pursue their hockey careers. Keeping this relationship hidden from the world is a challenge greater than either would ever have on the ice. ARTHUR TARNOWSKI ACE, CCE Arthur Tarnowski is an award-winning editor who grew up loving James Bond and Ingmar Bergman films (thank you PBS). Editor of over 40 features, in both English and French, his eclectic filmography encompasses everything from broad comedies like the Canadian box-office hits Father and Guns 2 and Compulsive Liar to auteur cinema like Drunken Birds (Canada's Academy Awards submission, 2022), Kidnapping Inc.(Sundance 2024; Haiti's Academy Awards submission, 2026), Irena's Vow (TIFF 2023) and The Hummingbird Project(TIFF 2018). He also enjoys cutting action pictures such as Deadfall (Tribeca 2013), Brick Mansions and The Decline. His television work includes The Sticky, DMV, 19-2, Bad Blood, Being Human, The Art of More, and The Moody's. He has also created trailers for over 150 films. His most recent project, Heated Rivalry—a Crave/HBO series created with frequent collaborator writer-director Jacob Tierney—has become a global television phenomenon. VÉRONIQUE BARBE CCE Aside from her work on Heated Rivalry, Vero's credits include HBO's Big Little Lies and Sharp Objects, both directed by Jean‑Marc Vallée — a cherished creative partner and mentor whose impact continues to guide her work. She has edited TV series and films across Canada, the U.S., Europe, and Japan, and has earned nominations from the Emmys, ACE, CCE, and CSA. Welcome to The B-Side! Here we talk about movie stars! Not the movies that made them famous or kept them famous, but the ones that they made in between. Today we celebrate Canadian greatness. We celebrate Rachel McAdams! Our B-Sides include The Lucky Ones, The Time Traveller's Wife, Passion, and Every Thing Will Be Fine. We also spend some time on The Hot Chick, and do a couple of Rachel McAdams-inspired quizzes at the top of the episode. It's fun! We talk about her new Sam Raimi movie Send Help. We reflect on McAdams' stratospheric rise to stardom within the first few years (and films) of her career, that time she dated Ryan Gosling, and her many accents over the years. We also shout-out the sheer amount of great filmmakers she's worked with over the years: Wes Craven, Ira Sachs, Woody Allen, Terrence Malick, Brian De Palma, Cameron Crowe, Antoine Fuqua, Tom McCarthy, Wim Wenders, Mark Osborne (animated), Sam Raimi, and Kelly Fremon Craig. That's incredible! There's the limited amount of press she has done over the years (though this podcast episode is lovely, about her and her dear friend) and the fact that the hit movies she's starred in throughout her career are mostly not made for movie theaters anymore. We speak to her comedy chops and her constant alignment with the directors she works with. She's a pro! And finally, we show some appropriate respect to the Michael Sucsy-directed romance The Vow. The woman loves a movie wherein time is manipulated!
Music of the Mat is celebrating nine years the only way it knows how: with a hearty pun and a lively discussion about hair metal! Inspired by the recent retirement of Hiroshi Tanahashi and his glorious head of hair, this episode combines two hirsute topics. The hair vs. hair match is a stipulation that has been around for decades in pro wrestling, and hair metal is a genre that has been around for decades in music (even if it's heyday was forty years ago). Andrew is joined by returning guest Damon McDonald (Super J-Cast) to play some of their favorite hair metal songs. Artists played include Ratt, Cinderella, White Lion, Skid Row, Def Leppard, KIX, Bon Jovi, Poison, and many more. In this episode, I share the audio version of a conversation I had recently with my husband Mark about the spiritual awakening that led me to escape the cult we were in, and ultimately help others escape and bring about justice. It's a part of the story that wasn't told in the HBO doc-series ‘The Vow' and feels like such an important piece of how people wake up from abusive situations in general. When we remember who we really are, and come back to the beauty and magnificence of our true nature, we're no longer controllable! This conversation was a vulnerable deep dive and I hope it can spark something in you and help you connect more deeply to your truth and power. The research is clear: being outside is good for us. And it is good for our dogs, too. When we know this to be true–with or without empirical data–why do we still find it so hard? Are there solutions to this? Is this actually worth doing? Isn't a quick stroll around the block better than nothing? Vow in 2025 to go outside more with your dog; you will not regret it. In Part 1 of our conversation with martial artist and empowerment self-defense instructor Elicia Ybarra, we trace how a childhood love of ninja turtles and karate turned into a 30-year journey through grooming, coercive control, and abuse in multiple martial arts settings, and how she eventually turned all of it into a curriculum to help other women fight back before it ever gets physical.Elicia described being groomed by a trusted instructor from ages 13–16, losing her community when she tried to set boundaries, getting pulled into a second “family” TaeKwonDo organization where a grandmaster weaponized rank, money, and humiliation, and how those patterns set her up for an extremely violent relationship she barely escaped. She walked us through the turning points: postpartum depression, COVID, therapy, watching cult docs (shoutout, The Vow), quitting smoking, and finally building “Pretty Hands, Hard Punches” and an empowerment self-defense model that starts with boundaries, intuition, and situational awareness—not just throat punches and palm strikes.Be sure to follow Elicia on her website, prettyhandshardpunches.com, or on Facebook or Instagram @prettyhandshardpunches.Trigger warning: This episode contains frank discussion of sexual abuse, statutory rape, workplace sexism and harassment, intimate partner violence, and suicide. Also…let it be known that:The views and opinions expressed on A Little Bit Culty do not necessarily reflect the official policy or position of the podcast. Nancy Salzman, former president and co-founder of Executive Success Programs (ESP), returns for the second part of her first-ever post-prison interview. After co-founding ESP with Keith Raniere in 1998, the company grew into the larger umbrella organization NXIVM—originally promoted as an elite personal development and leadership training community. In this second part of her conversation with Kate, Nancy speaks openly about the unraveling of NXIVM, the legal fallout that followed, and the personal reckoning she faced as she prepared to plead guilty. She discusses the complex blend of loyalty, denial, and awakening that preceded her arrest; her experience inside federal prison; and the emotional and psychological work required to confront her own responsibility.
