April Dunford: How to Position Your Products and Brand for More Sales

Play Episode Listen Later May 5, 2022 36:35

Is positioning for your product or for the brand? Well, it's both! And the better your positioning, the better you sell. But how do we go about this? We spoke to the the leading expert in the space, April Dunford to unpack her secrets to success for you. More About April (from April) I spent the first 25 years of my career as a startup executive, running marketing, product, and sales teams. I led teams at seven successful B2B technology startups. Most of those startups were acquired (DataMirror to IBM, Janna Systems to Siebel Systems, then SAP, Watcom to Sybase via Powersoft, to name a few), and I ran big teams at IBM, Siebel, Sybase, and others. The total of those acquisitions is more than two billion dollars. Across that journey, I positioned, re-positioned, and launched 16 products.  I have a deep curiosity about what makes the difference between a winning product and a loser. Developing a systematic way of positioning technology products and companies has become my life's work. As a consultant, I have had the privilege of working with more than 100 companies, allowing me to go even deeper and broaden my positioning expertise. The bulk of my work is with early and growth-stage startups. Companies where the stakes are high - and weak positioning can mean the difference between success or failure. I also work with large global companies, helping them develop deeper positioning expertise in their product and marketing teams.  My book, Obviously Awesome, captures my ideas about positioning and a methodology for doing it that any startup can follow. It's become a best-seller and popular among entrepreneurs, product, and marketing folk. I studied Engineering in University, and if you had told me then that someday I would be an author, I would have said you were nuts. It turns out my grade 6 English teacher was wrong about the importance of grammar.  I'm at the stage of my career where I'm trying to give back as much as I can. I am a mentor and advisor to dozens of startups and folks that work in them. I am an enthusiastic board member at a handful of startups.  I live in Toronto, Canada. I have kids, a small dog, and a cabin in the woods. Want More? Visit us at https://changecreator.com/ (https://changecreator.com) Ready to Grow Your Brand Authority and Revenues? With a wildly changing world tossing curveballs at you it can be hard to stick to your values and stay true to your business mission. We brought back the founder of the waste-free fashion brand, Tonle. Her name is Rachel Faller and she has been running Tonle for over 15 years facing many ups and downs. We get into a powerful discussion about the world, the markets and navigate them with the business. More about Rachel: Rachel Faller is an entrepreneur by trade and a creative at heart. She dedicates most of her time to rectifying harm within the garment industry using a systemic approach- encouraging people to think about the root of systemic injustice and tackling these issues at their core rather than simply treating the symptoms. Rachel is a co-creator of tonle – a zero-waste, an ethical, and sustainable fashion line that is both a brand and a manufacturer. Alongside a small but mighty 60-person team, tonlé is setting a new standard for the fashion industry: That is, to create a business where everyone benefits and thrives. Tonlé believes in horizontal leadership structures and designing from materials that others consider waste, as well as addressing the root causes of the industry's problems: namely, capitalism, colonialism, misogyny and white supremacy. Rachel is also a co-founder at Reclaim Collaborative, and writes at Just Fashion, a medium publication that explores the intersection of justice and fashion. Rachel's personal and community care practices include crafting, painting, mending, gardening, and foraging. She says: “The process of making something or growing something, while in some ways feels like an act of self-preservation or self-reliance — often reminds me of how many people I depend on for my daily existence. I'm reminded of the labor, and hopefully, love, that went into my food and clothing. These practices ground me in reciprocity and the knowledge that, individually — we can't do much. But collectively, we are powerful.” Want More? Visit us at https://changecreator.com/ (https://changecreator.com) Ready to Grow Your Brand Authority and Revenues? The truth is that the universe chose me for this role. I have been gifted the ability to navigate the most harsh and vicious child abuse to come out on the other side seemingly whole. I say seemingly because there will always be a part of me that was stolen. I cannot get that back. None of the rage, drugs, sex, rock n' roll, or anger will give me that thing that was stolen. The world is both beautiful and brutal and I have seen the best and the worst of it. I know that the abuse I suffered has given me an undeniable strength that I was only able to tap into after falling face first into complete darkness. There is truth in understanding that Mindset is Everything. There are no shortcuts, trust me I've tried them all. There is hard work and on the backside of that is getting your life back. Think Unbroken is about sharing the tools and skills I have created and leveraged over a lifetime to help other people break free of The Vortex and become the person that they know they are capable of being. Branding and storytelling are deeply misunderstood today by most entrepreneurs. So, what does it mean to your business and should it be a priority? We had the honor to talk to a branding legend, a guy that helped create Amazon, Yahoo! and created an agency valued at $1 billion - Bernhard Schroeder. More About Bernie (from him) Yesteryear, I was born in Austria. Today, I am the director at the Lavin Entrepreneurship Center and teach entrepreneurship courses at San Diego State University. In February, 2015, my book, Fail Fast or Win Big!, was published for anyone that aspires to be an entrepreneur but needs a road map. And, every now and then, I remake, launch or revitalize a brand.  I was not born to do any of this. I have no destination. Just a crazy journey that as far as I can see, still has miles to go. I worked hard early in my career and became a pretty good marketer. That ultimately led me to my future partners and we built CKS|Partners into the world's first and best integrated marketing agency powerhouse with more than 25 offices and 2,500 employees. I became a brand expert in that endeavor launching amazing brands offline and online like Yahoo! and Amazon. After that, I landed in the San Diego community and turned around four companies in eight years as a Chief Marketing or Operating Officer. That was fun, challenging and ultimately tiring. That's when I came to San Diego State University. By far, the most fun I have ever had is to be on a college campus. The energy, the ideas, the spirit of the students and staff is infectious. In February of 2015, I launched my first book, http://www.amazon.com/Fail-Fast-Win-Big-Start-Up/dp/0814434789 (Fail Fast or Win Big).  My second book, https://www.amazon.com/Simply-Brilliant-Powerful-Techniques-Creativity/dp/0814437192/ref=sr_1_4?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1469728143&sr=1-4&keywords=simply+brilliant (Simply Brilliant) came out in September of 2016. It's about creativity and innovation and how everyone can be more creative. My third book is,https://www.amazon.com/Brands-BullS-Branding-Millennial-Marketers/dp/1976364442/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1508260848&sr=8-1&keywords=schroeder+brands ( Brands and Bulls**t, Excel at the Former, Avoid the Latter.)  A Branding Primer for Millennial Marketers in a Digital Age. The book was released by Tired Coast Publishing in October 2017.
