How does a Secret Service Agent get the nickname “Talk Back Barbie” What it's like being a woman working in a male dominated environment such as the Secret Service? How do you get there? What do you do once you get there?  How do you overcome the testosterone the air? Stay tuned because in This Episode of One More Thing Before You Go, we are going to have a conversation with a woman who dreamed of being an FBI agent at a very young age and went on to working as a Secret Service agent in the White House, to being an author of her first book "Talk Back Barbie the Secret Service Edition." Where you get a first-hand account of how she handled it all. I'm your host Michael Herst and this is that thing about Talk Back Barbie…. My guest in this episode is Lauren Lusby Fernandez graduated from Virginia Tech with a Political Science: Pre-Law degree. She went to work for the Secret Service in Washington, D.C. and trained at the elite Federal Law Enforcement Training Center as well as the James J. Rowley Training Center.  She has been a consultant at a firm in McLean, Virginia worked with the Department of State, CIA, the National Counterterrorism Center, and other Intelligence communities.  In January of 2021 Lauren self-published her first book, "Talk Back Barbie: The Secret Service Edition." It is a comedy about her experience working with the Secret Service as a girly-girl and how she got where she is today. Her life motto is: "If you trip and fall, laugh first, then get up and keep going! Our guest this week is Lauren Lusby Fernandez. Listen to the episode to find out how she went from “Talkback Barbie” to working for the Secret Service. She also reads a chapter from her book. It is an interesting episode and offers some great advice for those wanting to succeed against long odds.   Lauren's Bio: "I graduated from Virginia Tech with my Political Science: Pre-Law degree. I then went to work for the Secret Service Uniformed Division in Washington, D.C. I trained at the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center (FLETC) and the James J. Rowley Training Center (JJRTC). After leaving the White House, I utilized my Top Secret: SCI/Full Scope Polygraph and accepted a job with a consulting firm in McLean, Virginia working with the Department of State, CIA, National Counterterrorism Center, and other Intelligence communities. I just self-published my first book, "Talk Back Barbie: The Secret Service Edition." It is a comedy about my experience working with the Secret Service as a girly-girl and my diverse resume. My life motto is: "If you trip and fall, laugh first, then get up and keep going! Because the only way you fail is to never get up." Ep. #032 - Please welcome Deputy Chief Catrina Bonus; Catrina has served with the Secret Service for close to 25 years.  She began her career as an officer assigned to the White House Branch and throughout her career, she has risen steadily through the ranks with leadership assignments at all branches of the Uniformed Division including the White House, Foreign Missions, Naval Observatory, Special Operations – Magnetometer Operations Office, Office of the Chief, and the James J. Rowley Training Center (JJRTC). On August 5, 2018, Catrina was appointed to the rank of Deputy Chief; the Uniformed Division's first female Deputy Chief. Her first assignment as Deputy Chief was at the White House, the largest branch within the Uniformed Division.  Her current assignment is at the James J. Rowley Training Center where she appreciates the opportunity to work amongst the JJRTC Training Staff to direct, coordinate, and implement policies and programs associated with Secret Service basic and advanced training and employee and leadership development for USSS trainees and employees. Episode #031 – Please welcome Assistant Director Kimberly Cheatle, Office of Protective Operations. AD Cheatle oversees a special projects team that responds to operational, technical, and administrative issues at all levels of the organization; and directs staffing and logistical operations for the directorate and ten operational divisions to ensure divisions and events are properly resourced. Also, she works with the Technical Security Division to research, develop, and deploy technologies that reduce risks to protectees, protected facilities, and protected events. Prior to serving as Assistant Director, she served as the Special Agent in Charge of the Atlanta Field Office, providing oversight for all mission-related investigations, protective intelligence, and protective visits in the state of Georgia. Ms. Cheatle was appointed to the Senior Executive Service (SES) in February 2016 as the Special Agent in Charge of the James J. Rowley Training Center (RTC). She later served as the Deputy Assistant Director for the Office of Training. Ms. Cheatle has served in numerous leadership roles throughout her 25-year career, including Special Agent in Charge of Strategic Planning and Policy, the Vice Presidential Protective Division, the Resident Agent in Charge, Grand Rapids, MI resident office, Assistant Inspector, Office of Inspection, Assistant to the Special Agent in Charge, Vice Presidential Protective Division, and Assistant to the Special Agent in Charge, RTC. Episode #029 Please welcome Lieutenant Maria Ruano of the Uniformed Division. Lt. Ruano has served with the USSS for more than 14 years. She started her career at the White House Branch before transferring to the Naval Observatory Branch and then on to the Counter Surveillance Unit for the Vice Presidential Protective Detail (VPPD). Lt. Ruano was promoted to Sergeant in 2014 and then assigned to the White House Branch. Then she was selected as a classroom instructor at the James J. Rowley Training Center for two years before getting promoted to the rank of Lieutenant and transferred to the Special Operations Division (SOD) back to the White House Branch. In 2019, she was named as the Operations Lieutenant at SOD/ K9 where she is currently assigned.
