Today on the show: Fictional and nonfictional takes on extraterrestrial life. Steven Rowley's new novel Take Me With You is about a man whose husband is abducted by aliens. The author says the premise stemmed from one he often discusses with his own husband: If you had the chance to be taken by aliens, would you go? In today's episode, Rowley speaks with NPR's Ayesha Rascoe about the novel's “willing hitchhiker.” Then, Neil deGrasse Tyson talks with NPR's Scott Simon about his new book,Take Me to Your Leader, which is a practical guide to – and exploration of – alien encounters. To listen to Book of the Day sponsor-free and support NPR's book coverage, sign up for Book of the Day+ at plus.npr.org/bookofthedaySee pcm.adswizz.com for information about our collection and use of personal data for sponsorship and to manage your podcast sponsorship preferences.NPR Privacy Policy

"What are the stories that people can participate in and see themselves in? I think that's one of the keys that we can unlock when it comes to the whole climate narrative is telling stories that build the scaffolding blocks to a larger narrative that people want to be a part of, and we need to make it feel inevitable….The way that justice prevails, whether it's environmental justice or any kind of justice, I think it's that the leaders make it feel inevitable. And that's the climate movement's job. And I think we have every opportunity and ability to do that." Melissa Jun Rowley on Electric Ladies Podcast The movements have been struggling to connect with people to communicate the vital messages about protecting the planet and its inhabitants.  How can the climate and justice movements engage people again? Listen to Melissa Jun Rowleg, author of "Beyond the Mic Drop: How Stories Can Shift Culture, Power & Policy" and communications expert and journalist in this fascinating conversation with Electric Ladies Podcast host Joan Michelson.   You'll hear about: ●        How stories and narratives work to engage people of all stripes. ●        How emotion is key to connecting with people, helping them see themselves in the story ●        Tips on how to develop and tell stories and tie them into a narrative campaign to drive a positive message for the planet and its inhabitants ●        Plus, career advice, such as:   "You really need to start looking at yourself differently. You're looking at yourself as one thing, but your skills, your assets, your talents, your passion can be so many things to so many other people…Try to look outside yourself a bit.…It's very hard to see ourselves clearly, and I don't know if we ever really do…So, if you're able to, just talk to other people and say…'What do you see in my skillset and in my energy and in what I've accomplished so far and what I could do that maybe I'm not looking at?' Because it is so hard to see ourselves…(and) it's important to celebrate our wins." What if trance isn't something you enter… but something you realise is already there? In this first part of a two-part experience with Joe Rowley Flynn, we explore the foundations of trance blending — stripping it back to something far more natural, accessible, and less complicated than most people imagine. This isn't about technique-heavy mediumship. It's about awareness. Presence. And letting go of the need to “do.”Joe shares a refreshingly simple approach to trance — one that challenges the idea that you need years of effort, struggle, or perfection to experience it.Because the truth is…The presence is already there. This episode sets the stage for Part 2 — The Presence Is Already There Experience — where we move from understanding… into direct experience.

Dr. Matthew Rowley, a fifth-generation Albertan, pastor, and historical theologian with a PhD in political theology, is the founder and president of Renew Alberta. Through the organization, Rowley advocates for Alberta independence as a means to preserve and restore the province's traditional values—rooted in pre-Trudeau Canada's principles of Peace, Order, and Good Government, Westminster parliamentary traditions, respect for the Crown, personal responsibility, and community self-reliance. Rather than framing sovereignty as anger or rupture, Renew Alberta presents a measured, historically informed case that positions independence as a way for Alberta to continue Canada's original heritage in a setting free from federal overreach. Rowley, who also leads Milvian Strategies and TLI Canada, emphasizes disciplined organizing and credible arguments aimed at broader Albertan support.Watch the Cornerstone Forum 26'https://shaunnewmanpodcast.substack.com/Silver Gold Bull Links:Website: https://silvergoldbull.ca/Email: SNP@silvergoldbull.comText Grahame: (587) 441-9100Bow Valley Credit UnionBitcoin: www.bowvalleycu.com/en/personal/investing-wealth/bitcoin-gatewayEmail: welcome@BowValleycu.com Get your voice heard: Text Shaun 587-217-8500

This conversation came directly out of our last mastermind session and I knew it needed to be shared. We get into the difference between planning from circumstance versus creating from certainty, and what it really means to allow instead of force.   In this conversation, we share:  - Why you can't plan from circumstance and what to do instead How getting clear on intention unlocks what searching from fear never could  - What it means to go vertical and why it's different from just trusting the process  - How the mastermind is changing not just investing but parenting, relationships, and identity  - Why your kids are not yours and how that reframe creates so much freedom  - What it looks like when the work gets into your cells versus just your head  - How allowing in is a decision, not a practice of doing less If you're feeling called to go deeper with this work, the next round of the Spiritual Investor Mastermind begins May 5th. Kosmes Reflects on Evolution of Whittier Tech and Education as She Prepares to Retire

Kara Kosmes, who retires in August as business manager at Whittier Regional Vocational Technical High School, has witnessed a sea change in career training as well as in the tools she uses to keep a watchful eye on finances.Born and raised in Haverhill, sixty-seven-year-old Kosmes shared her experiences during a recent appearance on WHAV's “Win for Breakfast” morning program. She reflected on how her job has changed in 30 years.“Everything was manual when I first started. You used paper and pencil and, in order to do bookkeeping, you had these very long, wide spreadsheets,” she recalled.Kosmes was a freshman at Haverhill High School when Whittier Tech opened in 1973. Following college, she started her career in finance at a local certified public accounting firm, a position she held for 14 years. She then worked nearly 17 years in Haverhill Public Schools as assistant superintendent for finance and operations before joining Whitter Tech in July 2013.The school was chartered in 1967 to provide a career training alternative for 11 communities including Haverhill. The other communities are Amesbury, Georgetown, Groveland, Ipswich, Merrimac, Newbury, Newburyport, Rowley, Salisbury and West Newbury. Kosmes remembers touring the new building and being blown away by its appearance.“At the time, it was state of the art, brand new, beautiful. It didn't look a lot like the schools that I had been to up until then. But it was a very different school than it is now. It was primarily for the trades.”Kosmes noted the impetus to establish Whittier Tech grew out of the old Haverhill Trade School that operated in downtown Haverhill. She pointed out that 50 years later, Whittier students don't just head to a job in the trades following graduation. With their Whittier education, students can continue their education by going to a technical school or pursuing a two- or four-year college degree.“The bonus I think for students today is you also leave with a skill so you always will have something, hopefully, to fall back on,” Kosmes said.In her position as business manager, Kosmes has been intimately involved with the effort to renovate or replace the aging Whittier building. She has been attending meetings of the committee to amend the 1967 Regional Agreement with governs how capital and operating costs are allotted to member communities. Several of which are pressing for changes in the agreement since more than half the student body is from Haverhill, but the city would pay just 44% of the share of the cost of any new construction. Rowley, on the other hand, would pay 3.5% of the cost and Newburyport 10.5%, but are only allocated 10 seats each or 2%.“We hope within a year that we'll have some sort of new amended regional agreement that people can agree upon, at least as much as they can agree upon it, and that we may be able to move forward with a building project for Whittier,” Kosmes said. She said she plans to stay involved with the Whittier community in her retirement, though she is looking forward to spending more time at the beach. She is also a longtime member of the board of directors of the Greater Haverhill YMCA and assistant treasurer of the parish council at Holy Apostles Saints Peter and Paul Greek Orthodox Church in Haverhill.Support the show

This is a Vintage episode from 2007Why This Episode MattersIf you've ever wondered why some salmon, oysters, or tomatoes taste better than others, this episode gets into the reasons.Jon Rowley explains how better fish handling changed the reputation of Copper River salmon. He breaks down why oysters pair well with only certain wines and how American oyster culture faded and returned. The conversation also explores compost, soil health, and its impact on flavorThe big idea here is simple: great flavor starts long before food reaches the plate. The BanterMark and Francis open with a conversation about the rise of “under the radar” bars and restaurants in Manhattan: places with no sign, no published number, or a deliberate effort to avoid becoming the next overcrowded hotspot. They talk through the difference between true neighborhood-style discretion and exclusivity used as marketing, with stops at Milk & Honey, Pegu Club, and the Waverly Inn.The ConversationJon Rowley joins the show with the kind of résumé that makes food people pay attention. A former commercial fisherman, Rowley helped develop the fresh market for Copper River salmon. He explains how fish are handled dramatically improves flavor and texture. The conversation then shifts to oysters, where Rowley discusses the Pacific Coast Oyster Wine Competition, finding wines to flatter oysters, and how American oyster culture disappeared and then slowly returned. He also talks about the role oysters play in healthier waterways. In the final segment, Rowley turns from sea to soil. He talks compost, organic matter, and why healthier soil leads to more flavorful produce. It is a wide-ranging conversation, but the theme is consistent: better food comes from understanding the systems behind it.Time Stamps0:00 – Banter: the appeal and limits of “under the radar” bars and restaurants8:25 – Jon Rowley joins: fisherman, oyster expert, and advocate for better flavor9:40 – How Copper River salmon went from canned commodity to prized fresh fish12:20 – The ideal fish-handling process16:00 – Oysters and wine: what actually works and why19:40 – The return of oyster culture in America22:20 – Clean water matters for oysters and for their ecosystems 25:15 – Mulling over compost: why soil health changes the flavor of produceGuest BioJon Rowley was a food consultant known for elevating the way chefs and consumers think about flavor. Britain's top police official, Metropolitan Police Commissioner Mark Rowley, has been actively pushing U.S. authorities to provide unredacted versions of documents tied to Jeffrey Epstein as part of an ongoing investigation into former Labour minister Peter Mandelson. Rowley has already raised the issue with the U.S. ambassador and is expected to press further during a visit to Washington, seeking full access to emails and records that were partially withheld when millions of Epstein-related files were released. The redactions, initially made to protect victims and preserve ongoing investigations, have limited what UK investigators can review, prompting concerns that key details about Mandelson's relationship with Epstein may still be hidden. The push for full disclosure comes as British authorities investigate Mandelson for alleged misconduct in public office, including claims that he passed sensitive government information to Epstein while serving in a senior role. Both Mandelson and another high-profile figure were arrested and later released on bail following the document release, and police are now seeking deeper access to the underlying communications. Officials have warned that if U.S. cooperation is not forthcoming, the UK may have to pursue a formal legal process to obtain the material—a slow route that could take up to a year and still offers no guarantee of success—leaving the investigation dependent on whether full transparency from U.S. agencies is ultimately granted.to contact me:bobbycapucci@protonmail.comsource:Met commissioner ‘pressing US counterparts for access to unredacted Epstein files' for Mandelson probe | The Independent

On today's show, host Esty Dinur is in conversation with Kieran Knutson and Coleen Rowley about the ongoing presence of ICE and other federal agents in the Twin Cities. Knutson says that the assault on the people of Minneapolis and surrounding areas isn’t over even though some ICE activity has diminished following the announcement by border czar Tom Homan that Operation Metro Surge has concluded. He also discusses the vast network of rapid response groups, daily protests, mutual aid, and a new tenant’s union and other labor organizing that has galvanized the population. Knutson says that labor unions like his are helping their members find ways to participate in local organizing. Rowley says that she's optimistic about the role of US attorneys' offices in standing up for the Constitution. She sees this as proof of how unlawful ICE and Homeland Security's actions are. They also discuss the connection between what's happening in the Twin Cities and Palestine, US empire and counter insurgency operations, how people build bridges to work in solidarity against ICE, how local law enforcement has provided cover for federal agents, and how industries where immigrants are employed are feeling real strain. Kieran F. Knutson is the President of Communication Workers of America Local 7250. CWA Local 7250 is a non-profit membership labor union representing workers at AT&T mobility retail stores in Minnesota, and AT&T Legacy T in Minnesota, Iowa, Nebraska, North & South Dakota. Coleen Rowley is a retired FBI agent who served as Minneapolis Division Legal Counsel for the latter 13 years of her career, teaching constitutional law (i.e. criminal procedure) to FBI agents and other law enforcement. She disclosed some of the FBI’s pre 9-11 failures as part of the Joint Intelligence Committee Inquiry, then testified later to the Senate Judiciary Committee and as part of the lengthy, detailed Department of Justice Inspector General’s investigation of these same matters. She also publicly warned FBI Director Mueller in Feb 2003 that his wrongful support for President Bush’s illegal war on Iraq would prove counterproductive. Rowley was one of three whistleblowers selected as TIME Magazine’s 2002 Persons of the Year. His Notting Hill gastrodome, Kensington Place was all about being seen eating the coolest food in late century London, fashioned by his time with Roux Brothers in the kitchens of Le Gavroche and le Poulbot, and Joe Allen, Covent Garden's post theatre supper hang out. The Art of Longevity
The Art of Longevity Episode 86: Guilty Pleasures, with Sean Rowley

The Art of Longevity

I gave Sean Rowley a call after writing up an article on “Unguilty Pleasures” (see Chill Gonzales episode 64) - Gonzales' campaign against music snobbery and treatise on the pleasures of Enya's music. It became clear that the story of Rowley's own creation, Guilty Pleasures, was very much a candidate for the Art of Longevity. Guilty Pleasures became that wonderful thing - a content brand (before we called them that) that grew octopus arms. The club nights quickly grew by word-of-mouth, expanding to multiple venues, festivals, and international events, and becoming a fixture of the UK nightlife scene. Then came a series of successful compilation CDs, at a time when compilations still did big business in music. It went on to radio, live tours, and special events (including opening for George Michael at the new Wembley Stadium), helping to popularise nostalgia-driven and feel-good music culture. In Rowley's own words “nostalgia is a fucking wonderful thing”. Well, he did make a career out of it, so he would understand. For an idea to build the way it has, and to last so long, it needed to be something deeper. With Guilty Pleasures, Rowley challenged prevailing ideas of musical “taste” and helped normalise the celebration of mainstream pop, even in alternative spaces. He gave music snobbery a good clobbering and in doing so, established a legacy on DJ culture and the wider acceptance of joyful, communal music experiences. The evidence is everywhere: the enormously popular Despacio Disco launched by James Murphy (of LCD Soundsystem) and the Dewaele brothers (of Soulwax and 2ManyDJs). And then James Gunn of course, with the Guardians of The Galaxy soundtrack, which mined similar territory. The pandemic brought us Sophie Ellis-Bextor's Kitchen Disco. Tik Tok has of course done wonders for the “genre”- famous for making Matthew Wilder's “Break My Stride” a sensation, now with 500m streams on Spotify. And on it goes, the sprawling influence of a simple idea that is underpinned by the even simpler concept of the joy of music. Support the showGet more related content at: https://www.songsommelier.com/

In the early days, Matt Rowley was doing whatever it took to keep his firm alive — running 60+ seminars a year, making 13-hour road trips, and pushing forward with a business model that was unsustainable.Everything shifted when he made the scary decision to hire his first full-time employee, Daveda Phillips, who took a leap of faith and accepted the position for only $25K a year. She didn't say yes because of the paycheck, she said yes because she believed in Matt's vision. That same vision is what kept the team committed, even when challenges (like misalignment or running lean) could have torn things apart. In today's episode, we unpack how Matt and his team broke through the roadblocks that hold so many advisors back. Their model was broken, and fixing it took tough conversations and a new structure. But it was their culture — where trust was sacred, loyalty ran deep, and leadership meant serving the team first — that made real change possible and turned a fragile startup into a business of significance.3 of the biggest insights from Matt & Daveda…#1.) The $25K Leap That Changed EverythingMatt was barely making ends meet when he hired Daveda as his first full-time employee for $25,000 a year with no benefits. It was terrifying, but that leap of faith became the turning point. Without it, the firm never would have scaled past the founder grind.#2.) Why Lean and Mean Doesn't ScaleIn the early years, Matt ran 60+ seminars a year and even opened a second office six hours away to keep the pipeline full. It worked — but it nearly broke him and his team. The hard truth: running lean will only take you so far. To build a sustainable business, you have to invest in people and infrastructure.#3.) Breaking Through Partnership MisalignmentOne of the hardest moments in the journey was realizing Matt's original partner didn't share his vision for growth. Ending that partnership — and aligning fully with a team that believed in the bigger mission — was painful but absolutely necessary. For advisors, this is a reminder that the wrong partner will hold you back no matter how good the numbers look.Bonus: Loyalty and Ownership Are the Real Growth MultipliersWhat kept the firm alive through tough times wasn't marketing or seminars — it was a team that showed up with ride-or-die loyalty. Daveda and others took ownership, not just jobs, and Matt led by putting his employees before clients. That servant-leadership approach — where the team eats first, trust is sacred, and loyalty is valued above all — became the foundation for everything that followed.SHOW NOTEShttps://bradleyjohnson.com/136FREE GIFT + JOIN THE DBDL INSIDER CREWToday's Gift: 30 minute 1:1 coaching call with BradAre you a financial advisor who feels stuck, needs help, or simply wants to have a conversation with Brad? Elle Rowley is a woman on a mission to change the perception of motherhood. For someone who believes motherhood gave her the confidence to do more and be more in life, she wants to help others begin to view motherhood as transformative instead of something to be endured. On this week's episode, we talk with Elle about why she believes motherhood is a hero's journey—one absolutely worth taking.   “[Motherhood] tests every part of you but on the other side of that is transformation. It is finding yourself, it is knowing yourself. That archetype is a Christ archetype. It is service. It is losing yourself and finding it.”   3:12- Potential Unlocked 7:15- Softness, Humility and Open-Heartedness 13:35- Combatting Feelings of Inadequacy 16:12- Maiden, Mother, and Matriarch 21:37- Experiencing Our Own Paths 24:37- Nothing Too Precious 28:16- Losing Your Life 32:38- “Bring the Baby” 39:58- Honoring Our Elders 44:08- Grandma Moses 49:49- What Does It Mean To Be All In the Gospel of Jesus Christ?

Melvyn Bragg and guests discuss one of the most energetic, varied and innovative playwrights of his time. Thomas Middleton (1580-1627) worked across the London stages both alone and with others from Dekker and Rowley to Shakespeare and more. Middleton's range included raucous city comedies such as A Chaste Maid in Cheapside and chilling revenge tragedies like The Changeling and The Revenger's Tragedy, some with the main adult companies and some with child actors playing the scheming adults. Middleton seemed to be everywhere on the Jacobean stage, mixing warmth and cruelty amid laughter and horror, and even Macbeth's witches may be substantially his work.WithEmma Smith Professor of Shakespeare Studies at Hertford College, University of OxfordLucy Munro Professor of Shakespeare and Early Modern Literature at Kings College LondonAnd Michelle O'Callaghan Professor of Early Modern Literature at the University of ReadingProducer: Simon TillotsonReading list:Swapan Chakravorty, Society and Politics in the Plays of Thomas Middleton (Clarendon Press, 1996)Suzanne Gossett (ed.), Thomas Middleton in Context (Cambridge University Press, 2011)R.V.
