We're joined by Cinema journalist, Toby Rose, proud founder of the Palm' Dog who is highlighting the wins for dogs in films at this year's Cannes Film Festival. In a historic moment, the ceremony's two big prizes went to films directed by women - and also to female dog characters. The Palm Dog Award is held annually at a beachfront location on the last Friday of the Cannes Film Festival. It celebrates canine performances in all films screened at Cannes and is the world's longest running ceremony of its kind. Founded in 2001 by film journalist Toby Rose with a mission to give equal celebration to Canines at Cannes as their human co-stars. The sister ceremony, the FIDOS (For Incredible Dogs on Screen) is held annually in London, since 2007 for canine performances across all UK film releases in any given year. Former winners include Kodi from Dog on Trial, Messi from Anatomy of a Fall, Brandy from Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, Smurf from Sightseers and Uggie from The Artist. For more information go to the website or follow on InstragramFor more about Antinol and Naturaw, including A Dog's Life discounts you can use, go to the 'Anna Recommends' page at annawebb.co.ukMusic and production by Mike Hanson for Pod People ProductionsCover art by JaijoCover photo by Rhian Ap Gruffydd at Gruff Pawtraits

"Dangerous" and "vicious" dog law impacts animals, owners, rescue groups, dog wardens and humane officers A new Ohio law took effect in March, aiming to deal with "dangerous" and "vicious" dogs. It was inspired by a brutal attack on an 11-year-old girl named Avery Russell while she was on a playdate, and so the law is being called "Avery's Law." Avery was so badly injured that she was put into an induced coma for one week and spent several more weeks in the hospital, coming out on the other side with disfigurement to her face. The dog owner was convicted of failing to confine her dogs, sentenced to four days in jail, and required to pay a $450 fine. On Thursday's "Sound of Ideas," we'll walk through the Ohio legislature's unanimous response to this result with the passing of "Avery's Law." The new law codifies requirements related to dogs that attack people and other animals, while also impacting the work of dog wardens, humane officers and animal rescue groups. "Sound of Ideas" coordinating producer Drew Maziasz hosts this episode, filling in for Stephanie Haney. Are you confusing "fairness" with emotion when training your dog? This week, alongside celebrating a massive milestone for YCA, we drop some very hard truths. We break down the biggest misconception owners have about "fairness" and discuss a big mistake people make with ecollars. If your dog's behaviour isn't where it needs to be, this is the reality check you need to hear. And of course, it wouldn't be Caffeine and Canines without some ‘shaft' talk, we hear from Pablo about his painful journey to Circumcision.Shout out to our sponsors: Twenty Two Eleven | VIP Car Sourcing - https://www.instagram.com/twentytwo_elevenvip/The Canine Carpenter | Dog Training Equipment UK | Handcrafted in Norfolk - https://www.instagram.com/thecaninecarpenter?igsh=MW1rM2x4ZHQ2dDk0Zg==

Just under half of households in the U.S. own dogs and say they view their dogs as members of their family. The love goes both ways. Dogs depend on us for their survival, just as humans benefit from their presence. Research shows that having a furry companion is good for us physically, emotionally, some might even say spiritually. In this episode, host Samantha Laine Perfas talks with bestselling author Alice Hoffman, lifestyle medicine expert Beth Frates, and evolutionary biologist Erin Hecht about why we love dogs so much – and why they love us back.

In This Episode: Harlow's Legacy: A tribute to the dog who started it all and the love that transcends the rainbow bridge. Canines in the Workplace: How Corporate Canine Therapy is bringing healing to professional environments. The Heart of Communication: Understanding the silent, life-changing bond between therapy dogs and the people they help. Angel's Animal Antics: Our interactive segment! Tell us about your pet's funniest habit or a special moment you've shared, and we might feature your Pet Pal in our next segment. Bio Rodney Kaufman In an industry often defined by good intentions, Rodney Kaufman has built his reputation on something far more powerful: standards. As the founder of Corporate Canine Therapy, Rodney is not only shaping how therapy dog programs are delivered across the GTA and Ottawa; he is influencing how organizations think about psychological safety, risk management, and human wellness through the lens of canine-assisted support. With more than 10,000 hours of hands-on field experience, his work has taken place in the environments where excellence is not optional: hospitals, complex care units, schools, large corporate workplaces, and first responder settings. This is not theory. This is lived expertise. From Frontline Volunteering to Advanced Hospital Placements Rodney's career began with years of volunteering through St. John Ambulance Therapy Dog Services, progressing through every handler level and culminating in advanced placements at SickKids. Working alongside his soul dog, Harlow, he supported paediatric patients, families, and peer support initiatives that included first responders. Their work in complex care environments required a rare level of stability, intuition, and trust. The very qualities that now define the teams he mentors. In recognition of her extraordinary impact, Harlow was awarded Volunteer of the Year at SickKids for her work with children under one year of age. Today, Rodney's work continues with Juno, his Great Dane and the current mascot of Corporate Canine Therapy who is a visible symbol of the calm, confident presence that has become the organization's signature. As Corporate Canine Therapy continues to grow, Rodney's role is increasingly that of mentor, evaluator, and thought leader. Developing the next generation of therapy dog teams while helping institutions integrate canine-assisted wellness in a way that is ethical, effective, and sustainable. Because in the right hands, a therapy dog program is not a visit. It is a strategy. www.corporatecaninetherapy.ca Corporatecaninetherapy@gmail.com
This daily comedy show episode kicks off with a wholesome moment—Lern returning from her Illinois State Hall of Fame induction… which immediately turns into a full-blown emotional spiral because she may or may not have forgotten to thank her husband and family during her speech. (Don't worry, she's handling it totally fine… by reliving it 700 times.)The gang breaks down the entire weekend—from college nostalgia and questionable advice to students, to reliving the glory days of Vegas Bombs (which, somehow, still exist and are still a terrible idea). There's a lot of “we missed out on college life” energy mixed with “we absolutely would've ruined it anyway,” which feels about right. But then—because this is a daily comedy show and peace is never an option—we pivot hard into funeral talk. And not the normal kind. We're talking botched music playlists, awkward services, inheritance chaos, and the age-old question: what do you actually do with ashes long-term? The answers range from heartfelt… to deeply concerning… to “launch me out of a cannon into the ocean.”Naturally, that leads into a full discussion about writing your final wishes, haunting your loved ones, and whether your family will absolutely ignore everything you asked for anyway. (Spoiler: yes.)And just when you think things can't get more unhinged, we land on the real horror story—owning a pet in 2026. The crew breaks down the actual cost of having a dog or cat, and the number hits like a truck: over $50,000 across their lifetime. Between vet bills, medications, and emergency care, being a pet owner is basically a long-term financial commitment that also sheds on your couch. It's heartfelt, it's ridiculous, it's slightly existential—and it's exactly what you expect from a daily comedy show that thrives on turning normal conversations into absolute chaos.Follow The Rizzuto Show → linktr.ee/rizzshow for more from your favorite daily comedy show.Connect with The Rizzuto Show Comedy Podcast online → 1057thepoint.com/RizzShow.Hear The Rizz Show daily on the radio at 105.7 The Point | Hubbard Radio in St. Louis, MO.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
Podcast Synopsis In this insightful episode of the Animal Training Academy: Making Ripples podcast, host Shelly Wood sits down with Anna Gigliotti-Skret—a behavior-focused dog trainer based in Fremantle, Western Australia—for a deep dive into the intersection of human disability services and compassionate animal training. Anna shares her fascinating career evolution, starting from her roots in orientation and mobility instruction for the blind to her extensive experience as a Seeing Eye Dog instructor. Anna discusses the unique challenges of bridging the gap between high-stakes service dog work and the nuanced world of companion animal behavior. With a background enriched by the Karen Pryor Academy, Michael Shikashio's aggression studies, and Dr. Susan Friedman's Living and Learning with Animals, Anna brings a highly technical yet deeply empathetic lens to her independent practice, Forward Thinking Dog Training and Mobility. The conversation turns personal as Anna introduces Maggie, her "Cavoodle" with complex behavioral needs. Anna candidly explores the emotional and practical journey of managing Maggie's "doggy ADHD," the complexities of veterinary medication, and the reality of living with a high-needs pet. Together, Shelly and Anna explore: ✅ The Professional Pivot: How teaching humans to use long canes informed Anna's ability to break down training steps for dogs and their handlers. ✅ Navigating Systems: The ethical and emotional challenges of advocating for force-free methods within large, traditional organizations. ✅ Managing Expectations: Why "perfect heeling" isn't always the goal and how to prioritize an animal's needs (like a "sniffari") over a rigid training plan. ✅ Shared Goals and Family Dynamics: Balancing the needs of multiple family members and finding common ground in the training process. ✅ Cooperative Care Wins: Practical strategies for ear medication and home grooming, even when an animal has a history of avoidance. ✅ Creative Generalization: A delightful "happy win" involving a dog named Petro who learned to associate other dogs' bathroom breaks with high-value rewards. This episode is a masterclass in adaptability and advocacy. Anna's story reminds us that whether we are navigating a city with a guide dog or grooming a sensitive pet at home, the most powerful tools we have are patience, observation, and a commitment to meeting the individual exactly where they are. What to listen for:Our hosts, Robin Greubel and Stacy Barnett, sit down with canine cognition researcher Dr. Jennifer Essler. She unpacks her journey from coding Capuchin monkey videos in a windowless lab to studying fairness in wolves and dogs.Starting with music studies before discovering comparative psychology, Essler's academic trajectory took her from Georgia State's primate labs to hand-raised wolf packs in Vienna's Wolf Science Center. It's a unique research environment that controls for lifestyle differences between wolves and dogs by raising both species identically in packs. As a result, you can isolate domestication effects from environmental variables. The wolves, however, proved far more challenging subjects than primates, requiring complete experimental apparatus redesigns after initial safety failures. Her inequity aversion research uncovered pretty interesting species differences: wolves, like primates, showed quality sensitivity by refusing to work when partners received superior rewards.Dogs, conversely, accepted any reward as long as they received something, possibly reflecting their domestication-driven tolerance for human-directed work, or their reduced attention to partner outcomes.Robin, Stacy, and Dr. Essler discuss the practical implications this finding has for multi-dog training scenarios and reinforcement strategies.Essler's transition to Penn Vet Working Dog Center brought her expertise to practical applications: ovarian cancer detection, COVID-19 screening, and spotted lanternfly detection. All while developing behavioral assessment batteries. Canines for Disabled KidsA working dog can change a life, but only when the match is right. From the floor of the Abilities Expo in Dallas, we sit down with Kristin Hartness, a veteran service dog user and leader at Canines for Disabled Kids, to unpack how carefully trained dogs restore independence, safety, and joy for both adults and children. Kristin shares how user voices have reshaped the service dog industry—expanding task training, raising standards, and centering real-world needs over assumptions. We get practical about what actually makes a great partnership: task lists designed around daily life, temperament and drive that fit your routines, and the reality of washout rates that influence whether a dog should be purpose-bred or rescued. Kristin explains why programs typically train first and match later, how alerts can be barks or button presses depending on environment, and why lifestyle details—travel, public access, cuddly vs high-drive—matter as much as skill. Her stories illuminate the stakes, from a stylus retrieval that keeps a quadriplegic professional communicating, to seizure-alert dogs that give kids safe access to the playground without sidelining them from friends. We also talk about the emotional core of this work: losing a partner dog, taking time to grieve, and still choosing to honor their legacy by continuing to live fully with the next partner. It's a grounded, humane look at assistive technology that happens to have four legs and a heartbeat. If you're considering a service dog or advising someone who is, you'll find clear guidance on training pathways, matching criteria, and how to advocate for the support you need.Subscribe to hear more human-centered conversations about accessibility, assistive tech, and the people driving change. If this resonated, share it with someone who needs these insights, and leave a review to help others find the show.

In this episode, Bill Betts sits down with Carl, the founder of Woodfarm Barns and Barges, to explore the fascinating journey of building a dog-friendly holiday accommodation business that truly goes beyond the basics.Carl shares how he left the corporate world behind to pursue a passion for hospitality and property renovation, ultimately creating a collection of high-end, dog-welcoming retreats in the Suffolk countryside and on the water. But as Carl points out, there's a big difference between being dog-tolerant and genuinely dog-friendly.The conversation dives into the mindset shift required to serve pet owners well, how Carl learned to embrace dog culture, and why attention to detail and personal connection are key to customer loyalty in the hospitality industry. This is a great episode for groomers looking to unwind, business owners exploring diversification, or anyone who loves a behind-the-scenes look at turning passion into profit—with dogs at the heart of it all.

Somehow MAGA Chicago took an already horrific hate murder of two Jewish people and made it worse. Ben riffs. Jeff Jenkins talks about federal budget cuts that have threatened the Midnight Circus, which he stages in parks throughout Chicago. Why would Trump cut funding for a circus that brings laughter, joy and kindness to people? It's part of his mindless cuts to The National Endowment for the Arts. Also, Jeff talks about Canines for Kindness, his dog-rescue program. He brings rescued and rehabilitated dogs--many of whom had been trained to kill or be killed--into schools to show children there are other alternatives to hate and cruelty. Finally, a tribute to Bear, the family dog who died the other day.
