Jennifer Paz talks about her take on script and story as an actor and writer and about the need for more Asian-American content and characters on screen.
Sometimes the universe forces us to choose between who the world tells us we are supposed be and who we know we are supposed to be. When you get to this precipce in life, I believe this is the place where things really start to get fun! I met Jennifer Paz over 15 years ago on the North American tour of Miss Saigon. Since then, there have been many twists and turns that have gratefully allowed us to cross paths. As POC citizens of America, Jen and I align on the power and need for equalization. For both of us, this journey came to light with our dissatisfaction with the performing arts community and the blatant favoritism that saturates its broken systems. Whether because of color or sex, it is quite clear that the structure of the performing arts community needs a drastic shift and we are both here to talk about it. From being “blacklisted” to her fight with Alopecia to originating the role of Lapis Lazuli on the inclusive cartoon Steven Universe, Jen is here to use her voice to empower. Wanna hear more? Press play. Mmk? Mmk! Gday.
Taking care of your health, both mentally and physically is the most important to do. No one knows this as well than my dear friend and Miss Saigon alumn Jennifer Paz who now graces her voice on the Peabody award winning show, Steven Universe. Like Homer and the Odyssey, both of us have had our individual journeys with personal health, dealt with how the body forces you to pay attention to it when it’s in jeopardy and then have the inner resolve to overcome it, heal oneself, and get your life back! Join us for this entertaining and enlightening conversation where we talk about Jen’s experience with the autoimmune disease, alopecia, family, marriage, being Asian American, and everything in between. Just two good friends on this wild journey together doing our part to inspire others and live our best life! Come get lit, get woke, and get inspired in this fun hour with Jen!Connect with Panney Wei at:Instagram: @seethewaywithpanneyweiFacebook: www.facebook.com/seethewaywithpanneyweiTwitter: @panneyweiWebsite: www.panneywei.comJennifer Paz: @jenniferpazofficial

The TV Gods give and the TV Gods taketh away. That’s right, it’s time for upfronts, which means the networks are in the midst of announcing their renewals and cancelations for the coming year. Fortunately, after we recorded, they reconsidered one of the hardest hits of the recent announcements, with NBC picking up Brooklyn Nine-Nine for a sixth season. However, that’s only the start of the conversation this week, with lots of shows delivering compelling, emotional, and fun episodes. First up, Noel and Kate dive in with the comedies and reality, including the (series?) finale of Atlanta, the finale of Mom, The Last OG, a dramatic Brooklyn Nine-Nine, and RuPaul’s Drag Race. Then we move over to drama and genre, including the premieres of Vida and Sweetbitter, super tense episodes of The Americans and Killing Eve, character-redefining episodes of Timeless and Agents of SHIELD, and an alternatingly beautiful, sad, and shocking Steven Universe two-parter. Afterward, we round out the podcast by spotlighting the interesting and funny documentary series Wyatt Cenac’s Problem Areas, currently flying under the radar on HBO on Friday evenings.Spotlight: Wyatt Cenac’s Problem Areas (1:32:54)Our Week in Comedy and Reality Atlanta finale (14:19) Mom finale (22:45) The Last OG (25:41) Brooklyn Nine-Nine (28:07) RuPaul’s Drag Race (32:44)Our Week in Drama and Genre Vida premiere (44:16) Sweetbitter premiere (48:09) The Americans (53:17) Killing Eve (56:14) Timeless (1:00:42) Agents of SHIELD (1:03:58) Steven Universe (1:10:05)Music Featured: “I Shall Be Released” by Nina Simone; “That Distant Shore,” performed by Jennifer Paz in Steven Universe’s “Can’t Go Back”
Lapis Lazuli may have left Earth, but she made one quick stop before her ultimate departure, and that was here on the Steven Universe Podcast! She's talking about being trapped in a mirror, her feelings about shoes, and why she loves a good fart joke! And Steven Universe creator Rebecca Sugar and former Executive Producer Ian Jones-Quartey provide insight into the background and development of Lapis, the significance of her gem placement, and what her departure from Earth means for her character on the show. Plus, actress Jennifer Paz, who voices Lapis, and Storyboard Supervisor Hilary Florido share their favorite Lapis moments and episodes.
