Hot on the heals of the premiere episode comes Drag Race's take on Saturday Night Live which, despite some jokes clearly written by ChatGPT, kind of nails the SNL energy. (Even if "RDR Live" really does't roll off the tongue.) Darienne and Alexis bring us home to Jersey and Jimbo and Jessica flourish as the manscaping McCall Girls, but Kahanna's Kitty doesn't have us Jonesing for more and Naysha gets stuck on Uranus in that cold open. The Net Gala runway features zero references to "The Net," Thai royalty arrives to bop her way through the season's second lip sync assassination and our sister Naysha heads back to Roscoe's. Time comes for all of us. Well, most of us. We're not sure about Kris. This week, we're out of listener questions and our home lives are… steady? What's another word for steady? Boring? Uneventful? Regardless, no questions and no personal updates means this episode is a little shorter than usual. Kris talks about the difficulties of watching Euphoria as an adult. Tara suffers alone in the desert of RuPaul's Drag Race as she's dying for All Stars 8 to begin. Official Recommendations From Kris: Anything's Possible This week, Kris recommends the Billy Porter-directed film, Anything's Possible (2022). It's billed as a Gen-Z, coming-of-age movie about a confident trans girl and the boy who decides to make his move in the last year of high school. From Tara: My Brother's Husband by Gengoroh Tagame My Brother's Husband by Gengoroh Tagame is a manga series about a single dad and his daughter in Tokyo, who are visited by the husband of the father's recently deceased twin brother. It explores casual homophobia as a cultural norm in Japan and shows a different, more connected sense of what family can be when we challenge the idea of "should". The history of drag is full of bigger-than-life personalities who have been trailblazers, setting the scene for the Drag Race generation of superstars. Making their entrance into the drag spotlight like a lioness with style, grace, and a side of camp, is one of entertainment's finest leading ladies…Charles Busch. This multi-hyphenate entertainer made an indelible splash onto the scene in New York in the mid-'80s with his play Vampire Lesbians of Sodom, an unlikely hit that became one of the longest-running plays in the history of Off-Broadway. Not only did the show turn the theater scene on its head, but it also ignited the audience's love affair with Busch, making his drag famous (or infamous) on a mainstream level with no one doubting the man in a wig as a bona fide starlet. This playwright, actor, director, novelist, cabaret performer, and drag icon's career would prove to be as colorful and almost as fanciful as one of his early plays with a Tony nomination, Outer Circle Critics' John L. Gassner Award, Sundance Film Festival Award for Best Performance, honorable mention at the Tribeca Film Festival, Drama Desk Award for career achievement as both performer and playwright, a star on the Playwrights Walk outside the Lucille Lortel Theatre, two MAC awards, an infinite amount of critical acclaim, standing ovations, and a near cult following. This summer he tells all in his memoir, Leading Lady. Talking to him is dizzying as he recounts his almost too-hard-to-believe real-life stories, the people he's come across, and the characters he has created. On this episode we chat about Charles early childhood including the loss of his mother and being raised by a real life Auntie Mame, his sexual evolution, the duality of his characters, his first plays, getting into drag for the first time, his novel Whores of Lost Altantis, East Village in the 80s, getting political through art, some dish about his upcoming memoir Leading Lady, and more! Hosted by Alexander Rodriguez

"People don't talk about how hard hope is." In After the Cut, Dulcé Sloan shares the role her mother played in her becoming a comic, and how holding on to hope has been the biggest challenge throughout her career. And legendary drag performer, Sasha Colby, talks about her experience winning "RuPaul's Drag Race," how anti-drag laws are a roundabout way of criminalizing trans people, and why she wants to be an example of a happy trans woman in a media landscape that tends to focus only on trans people's trauma.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

You never know what you'll find when you walk into Sunshine House. There could be people singing karaoke or making get well cards for a friend. This resource centre in Winnipeg's centennial neighbourhood provides harm reduction supplies, a cup of coffee and community. In the center of this community: Drag. Feather Wolfe and Davey Francis Kole are the heart and soul of Sunshine House – and two of the Queens behind the Like That drop-in program, primarily focused on the LGBTQ2S+ community and invites them to come as they are. Chelazon Leroux sashayed into our hearts on the third season of Canada's Drag Race. The Dene drag queen from Saskatoon is one of the few Indigenous queens to grace Ru Paul's Canadian stage. But it's more than just stilettos, big hair and crowns; Chelazon is fierce, funny and proud to represent being Indigenous. In a world of queens, it can be a challenge for kings to find a place for themselves. Drag artists like Vancouver-based King Fisher, aka Jayme Andrews have had to fight to be part of the scene. But, clad in rhinestone, armour and love, they've won that battle. A drag performer of the Ktunaxa Nation, King Fisher challenges what drag should look like. Did someone say Landback? Colonization almost completely erased the space where two-spirit people exist within our communities. Anita Landback, who is from Millbrook First Nation, uses their drag as a love letter to their Mi'kmaq culture and to reclaim this space for themselves and future generations of two-spirit people. As much as many might wish they looked like Adam Beach, that's not the reality for most. Growing up, Tygr Willy loved watching Mr. Beach on the screen but didn't see themselves reflected. Through drag they're hoping to bring softer representation of Indigenous bodies and cultural intersectionality to a wider audience.
"Well, congratulations on getting out of the very dangerous world of haberdashery!" It's a Disco Bloodbath on the pod this week as we double featured both Party Monster movies with our friend Jesse Krempel host of the podcast Cult Cinema Circle. The documentary, or shall we say "Shockumentary" from 1998, and the 2003 film starring Macaulay Culkin, Seth Green, Chloë Sevigny, Wilmer Valderrama, and Dylan McDermott. Michael Alig's saga of the murder in clubland always fascinated us as young gays, and spoiler alert, at least one of the two entries holds up in its revisit. Long before World of Wonder took over the queer landscape with RuPaul's Drag Race, they made a documentary that looked at the events surrounding the murder of Andre "Angel" Melendez by club promoter and all around sh*t head Micahel Alig, with the help of Robert "Freeze" Riggs that landed them both in prison for 15 years. Former child actor superstar Mac Culkin came out of his 9 year retirement to play Alig in the 2003 indie dramatization of the events. With Seth Green playing the larger than life "celebutante" James St. James, Party Monster felt like event-queer-cinema in the early '00s when represention of gay characters in film was scarse. We reflect on how suprisingly poor the 2003 theatrical version revisits. The casting of Mac and Seth (two cis hetro men) aside, did we just overlook all its flaws when first watching because we were excited for this story being told in a major movie? Topics discussed include the colorful characters chronicled in the Shockumentary, the club kids taking over '90s daytime TV, and did 2000s indie darling Chloë Sevigny have better things she could have been doing than this thankless role? For better or for worse both Party Monsters are a unique snapshot of the club kid era of time gone by. Conservatives are outraged by kids' exposure to drag shows and there's been an increase in protests at drag events. But drag dates all the way back to ancient societies and Shakespearean theater. Host Roy Wood Jr. chats with the star of HBO's We're Here, Bob the Drag Queen, Princeton journalism professor, Channing Joseph, and author of the book, Drag: Combing Through The Big Wigs of Show Business, Frank DeCaro. They chat about Black and Queer trailblazers, the legacy of drag activism, and how representation from shows like Rupaul's Drag Race has helped make drag more mainstream and builds allyship among its viewers. Bob also talks about his personal journey growing up in the south and the challenges he faced filming season 3 of We're Here. Bob even gives Roy a drag queen name. Beyond the Scenes is a podcast from The Daily Show.
