On official documents, a vast range of identities in the East and South East Asian (ESEA) population in the UK is reduced to a single vague checkbox, an act of Othering with a history several centuries in the making. Academic, poet, and journalist Dr Anna Sulan Masing seeks to change the narrative. Exploring the history of the ESEA population in the UK, which spans on the one hand Empire, violence, and appropriation, and on the other, creativity, fusion, and multiplicity, Anna Sulan reveals a multifaceted history. From how the mythos of MSG drew on the language of Victorian media on opium dens, to why we should close the chapter on Miss Saigon for good, Anna Sulan reveals the rising voices reclaiming a stolen narrative. Originally aired as episode 198 on March 22, 2022. Trigger warning: This episode contains discussion of eating disorders. At the age of 25, Eva Noblezada is a two time Tony Award nominee, a Grammy Award winner, and a WhatsOnStage Award winning actress and singer. She starred as Kim in Cameron Mackintosh's London revival of Miss Saigon when she was 17 years old, and shortly after played Eponine in the West End revival of Les Misérables. Eva later reprised her performance as Kim in the first Broadway revival of Miss Saigon (also her Broadway debut). In 2019, she made her film debut in Yellow Rose starring alongside Lea Salonga, who originated the role of Kim in Miss Saigon. Eva originated the role of Eurydice in Hadestown on Broadway, and it's in Hadestown where she continues to lead, and take audiences “way down under the ground”. Eva speaks candidly about her past toxic relationship with the word “perfect”, how it affected her life as a 17 year old all on her own abroad, leading Cameron Mackintosh's London revival of Miss Saigon, and why she felt like she was “falling for years”. She opens up about living with anxiety, panic attacks, and body dysmorphia, and how she's learned to come back to herself at those times, and ask the important questions - “Are we in danger? - We're okay”. Talking about Hadestown, Eva shares her thoughts on Eurydice (and playing Eurydice), and her love for the “extra layer of consciousness” that can be seen throughout the whole show. In this episode, we talk about: Growing up Filipino Mexican, and discovering musical theater A strong work ethic, instilled by her father The mental and physical toll of an 8 show schedule Meeting Tara Rubin at the Jimmy Awards Pole dancing as fitness, and how society sexualizes women Her “all or nothing” way of life Connect with Eva: IG: @livevamaria Twitter: @EvaNoblezada Connect with The Theatre Podcast: Support us on Patreon: Patreon.com/TheTheatrePodcast Twitter & Instagram: @theatre_podcast Facebook.com/OfficialTheatrePodcast TheTheatrePodcast.com Alan's personal Instagram: @alanseales Email me at feedback@thetheatrepodcast.com. L. Steven and I first met over a decade and a half ago, while sharing the stage in the Broadway Company of The Lion King and traveling together with the National Tour, during which time he had the honor of performing at The White House. Always in demand, Steven's many credits include Ataria, Cutman, G Word, Miss Saigon, Songs For A New World, Godspell, and A Chorus Line. He's been seen on film and television in The Electric Company (Leo Watson), Last of The Ninth (HBO Pilot), Made For Each Other, Expiration Date, and Game Over. For the last decade, Steven's Mufasa has been the heart and soul of The Lion King on Broadway. It was wonderful to reminisce and hear about not only his extraordinary career but how it has been impacted by the burgeoning career of his remarkable son, Steven Jr., a recent college grad and certainly a star in the making. Sit back and enjoy!

The very first time I saw WICKED was when the national tour came to Cleveland in February 2008. The actress playing Glinda at the time was Katie Rose Clarke. As fate would have it, I was recently offered the chance to speak with her and Steven Jamail about their brand new song connected to their upbringing in Houston, Texas titled 'Margarita Christmas.' So naturally, I said yes. Katie Rose Clarke made her Broadway debut almost 20 years ago when she took over for Kelli O'Hara as Clara Johnson in THE LIGHT IN THE PIAZZA, where she even got to be a part of the PBS broadcast. Her subsequent credits include Hannah Campbell in ALLEGIANCE with George Takei and Lea Salonga, Ellen in the 2017 revival of MISS SAIGON, and most recently as Beth in the Tony-winning revival of MERRILY WE ROLL ALONG starring Jonathan Groff, Daniel Radcliffe, and Lindsay Mendez. Not to mention that she also happens to be Broadway's longest-running Glinda in WICKED. Steven Jamail is a composer, producer, musical director who has done arrangements and orchestrations that have been performed on Oprah, Howard Stern, Rachel Ray, The Rosie O'Donnell Show, Martha Stewart, The NBC Tree Lighting at Rockefeller Center, and the American Songbook series at Lincoln Center. He has also created arrangements and played for Bebe Winans, Rosie O'Donnell, Jessie Mueller, Jeremy Abbott, and Adam Rippon. He serves as the regular music director for Orfeh, Teal Wicks, Danielle Hope, and Lea Michele, having just recently orchestrated and conducted Ms. Michele's lauded Carnegie Hall debut and Life in Music Tour. He is the Associate Artistic Director of O'Donnell's foundation, Rosie's Theater Kids in NYC. *I do not own any of the content used in this video. Luke Evans says growing up in the South Wales valleys was tough at times. He was an only child in a family of Jehovah's Witnesses, bullied at school both for his religion – and for being gay. But, that quiet boy from the valleys who tried to blend into the background is now a huge international star. He shot to fame on the West End stage in the early 2000s – with roles in Rent, Miss Saigon and Les Mis. Since then, he's acted in Hollywood blockbusters like Beauty and the Beast, Fast & Furious Six and The Hobbit. Now in his mid-forties, Luke says he is happy, fulfilled and looking forward – so what songs has he chosen as his Inheritance Tracks.Inherited: Saturday Night at the Movies by The Drifters Passed on: The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face by Roberta FlackProducer: Ben Mitchell

Michelle Martin thinks Miss Saigon is an unmissable experience for any fan of musicals. With a cast that reflects Asia's diversity, this production is a fantastic retelling of a tale that has been reinterpreted by counteless stagings all across the globe. But this Cameron Mackintosh and Base Entertainment production brings even more depth to star-crossed lovers Kim and Chris's devastating choices. Both profoundly moving, and unique, this production brings a new layer of understanding to a musical some of us may have first experienced some 23 years ago. This epic of doomed love, fierce parental instinct, patriotic zeal, the dignity of the everyman and woman, the clash of self-determination and tradition, all wrapped in music and lyrics that are too beautiful to ever forget, is a must watch.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Partners since birth, our first guest Stephen Servis owns Servis Events with his twin brother Nicolas. Stephen joined us on the show to discuss how both he and his brother became chefs through some pivotal decisions made earlier in their lives. Years later, Stephen and his brother built a reputation based on being heavily tattooed twin Chefs. Post pandemic, they decided to try something new and found WWOOF (World Wide Opportunities on Organic Farms) while staying with at a farm to work. This led them to another farm, located in Maine, where the seeds for Servis Events were planted and began to bloom. Now, they're back in Bucks County, sourcing the most nutrient-rich ingredients from local farms, providing a multi-course Chef's Tasting Menu to individuals looking for their services as private Chefs through Servis Events. Our next guest helps Center City celebrate Vietnamese cuisine and culture, along with so much more at Miss Saigon. Chuong Nguyen is the Operating Manager and one of the co-owners of Miss Saigon in Philadelphia. The multi-level restaurant and bar offers an elevated take on Vietnamese street foods; providing menu options that are served family-style to encourage patrons to experience a variety of the tastes and flavors of the culture's cuisine. In addition to celebrating Vietnamese cuisine, the venue also provides a celebration full of PRIDE through their cocktail menu: There is a cocktail created for every color of the PRIDE flag! And be sure to reserve your opportunity to eat, drink, and sing inside their private Karaoke room with your friends! And keep your ears peeled through the end of this week's episode to find out when their first drag show will happen! Our last guest has brought people together on a global level! Gizem White, who is an expert in Gastrodiplomacy and is the Founder and CEO of the Turkish Coffee Lady located in Alexandria, VA. Gizem's story began as she desired to share the history--and cups--of Turkish coffee with like-minded individuals. And in 2012, Gizem created a non-profit food truck called The Turkish Coffee Truck, where she handed out free cups of brewed Turkish Coffee. Years later, her efforts brought her media attention and recognition, including an article which stuck and later became synonymous with her brand. So in 2017, she created the Turkish Coffee Lady brand in the U.S. Now, after visiting several countries and cities across the globe, Gizem and her brand Turkish Coffee Lady are considered as a "Friendship building initiative between Turkey and the USA," according to the US government. I don't know about you, but the love of a great cup of coffee is a perfect way to bring people together--so stay tuned until the end to hear how you can buy some of her Turkish Coffee Lady blends and enjoy it with some new friends!

Lea Salonga was just 18 when she became an international theatre star, taking a leading role in the world premiere production of the musical Miss Saigon in 1989. Her performance - first in London, then on Broadway - won her Olivier and Tony awards. She has provided the singing voice for two Disney princesses, and has become a strong advocate for better Asian representation on stage and screen. She was born in Manila in the Philippines, where she made her professional stage debut in 1978 at the age of seven in a production of The King and I. Further roles in musicals followed, and she recorded a best-selling solo album when she was 10. Lea planned to become a doctor before she was invited to audition for Miss Saigon, and her immediate success launched a performing career in which she has made history many times. She was the first Asian woman to win a Tony for an acting role, the first Asian actor to star in Les Misérables, the first Filipino artist to sign a record deal with an international label and the first person to voice two different Disney princesses - Mulan and Jasmine in Aladdin, in which she sang A Whole New World, which won the Oscar for Best Original Song.
