Czy wiecie, że John Q. Adams lubił pływać rankiem nago w Potomacu, a Harry Truman grał w pokera z kolegami, gdy dowiedział sie, że został prezydentem? Czy wiecie, że Thomas Jefferson i John Adams zmarli tego samego dnia, a była to 50 rocznica uchwalenia Deklaracji Niepodległości? A że Theodore Roosevelt został postrzelony lecz mimo to przemawiał do tłumu jeszcze przez półtorej godziny; że George W. Bush został wybrany większością zaledwie 536 głosów; że rząd Warrena Hardinga był tak skorumpowany, że jego Minister Spraw Wewnętrznych wylądował w więzieniu? To są drobiazgi, ale jakie ciekawe. Dzięki nim lepiej potrafimy zrozumieć, jak działa najpotężniejszy urząd na świecie. Amerykańska prezydentura to coś znacznie więcej niż urząd. Amerykańscy prezydenci to kolorowe osobowości. Profesor Bohdan Szklarski opowiada o mało znanych zakamarkach polityki w Białym Domu. Warszawski Festiwal Nauki to coroczna impreza odbywająca się we wrześniu w Warszawie, mająca za cel popularyzację nauki w społeczeństwie. Początkowo czas trwania Festiwalu obejmował jeden weekend, obecnie wynosi 10 dni. Festiwal Nauki jest współzałożycielem i członkiem Europejskiego Stowarzyszenia Spotkań z Nauką EUSCEA. Inicjatywa organizacji Festiwali Nauki w Warszawie powstała we wrześniu 1996 roku w Interdyscyplinarnym Centrum Modelowania Matematycznego i Komputerowego (ICM) UW. Zapoczątkował ją prof. David Shugar. Dokumentem formalnie powołującym Festiwal było Porozumienie podpisane w grudniu tegoż roku przez Rektorów Uniwersytetu Warszawskiego, Politechniki Warszawskiej i Prezesa Polskiej Akademii Nauk. Od stycznia 2006 roku animatorami Festiwalu są Wydział Fizyki UW i Instytut Biochemii i Biofizyki PAN, zaś oficjalnym reprezentantem, pozostaje Uniwersytet Warszawski. Obecnie na Festiwal składa się ponad pięćset różnorakich imprez (wykłady, pokazy, filmy, wystawy, wycieczki), organizowanych przez liczne placówki naukowe z całej stolicy. Od kilku lat część Festiwalu organizowana jest również w pobliskiej Jabłonnie. Tonight, on “It's Real Talk Radio”; we will be discussing the Popular Vote vs the Electoral College. The headline question is which do you prefer and why? The Popular Vote represents the total number of individual votes for both Presidential Candidates while the Electoral College is a bit more complex. The Electoral College represents the group of presidential electors required by the United States Constitution to form every four years, for the sole purpose of electing the president and vice president of the United States. Only 5 times out of 45 Presidential Elections has a Presidential Candidate lost the Popular Vote but won the election by winning the Electoral College. 1824; John Q. Adams vs Andrew Jackson, 1876; Rutherford B. Hayes vs Samuel J. Tilden, 1888; Benjamin Harrison vs Grover Cleveland, 2000; George W. Bush vs Al Gore and 2016; Donald Trump vs Hilary Clinton. This means that the Electoral College has only overruled the Popular Vote 11% of all 45 Elections while 89% of the time, the Popular Vote and Electoral College were in alignment. You may be asking yourself "If a presidential candidate can obtain the most votes but still lose by not obtaining the most Electoral College votes, does your vote even count?" This is a fair question and there are many Americans who ask themselves the same question. The United States' Presidential Election is one of the rare competitions where you can win the most votes but still lose the contest. This is a hard pill to swallow for most of us, but because it is written in the United States Constitution, until a bill is passed to make the Popular Vote dictate the winner of the Presidential Election, we have to accept the current rules. We will be sharing our personal views on the Electoral College vs the Popular Vote while also sharing our predictions of the 2020 Presidential Election, as we are just 4 days away from the 2020 Election on November 3rd.
