Academy Award-nominated actress Amy Irving has announced her sophomore album, Always Will Be, featuring 10 electrifying renditions of songs from her longtime friend Willie Nelson's iconic catalog. The album includes contributions from Amy Helm, Louis Cato, Steve Earle, Chris Pierce, Lizzie No, and Willie himself, and is due out on April 25 via Queen of the Castle Records/Missing Piece Records. Amy Irving and Willie Nelson's decades long friendship began when the pair first met on the set of the 1980 film Honeysuckle Rose. After dueting on a reimagining of his song "I'm Waiting Forever" for her 2023 debut album, Nelson reached out to Irving with a proposition: Why not record another album, one comprised entirely of his own work? Irving took him up on the offer, and the result is an incredibly heartfelt album, one that is rooted in love and friendship. Over Irving's prolific career, she has been seen in Brian DePalma's Carrie and The Fury, stage performances of Romeo & Juliet with the Los Angeles Shakespeare Society and Broadway's Amadeus. Irving was nominated for an Academy Award for her performance in Yentl, and has captivated audiences with beloved starring roles in films including Crossing Delancey, The Competition and Micki and Maude.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/arroe-collins-unplugged-totally-uncut--994165/support.

Amy Irving's film career soared in the 1980s. She was featured in the film Yentl, a role that earned her an Academy Award nomination. In the movie Crossing Delancey, Irving plays a single woman who falls in love with a pickle merchant. In real life, Irving married Steven Spielberg, a relationship that ended in divorce. She co-starred with Willie Nelson in the film Honeysuckle Rose and that was the beginning of a life-long friendship with Nelson. Irving's career has shifted away from acting and towards music. She's got a new album which features Willie Nelson covers. It's called Always Will Be. I spoke to Amy Irving at her home in Westchester about singing as a second act and what it's like to be an older woman in Hollywood. “Now What?” is produced with the help of Steve Zimmer, Lucy Little and Jackie Schwartz. Episode Summary In this raw and rumbling return, Madge gives you a microphone check from beyond the grave, welcomes Bissy the AI co-host who talks too much, and somehow makes a sincere tribute to dead podcasters while detailing one of the most dramatic dumps in Yeast Radio history. There's talk of chia, plungers, haunted turds, Simply Sara, haunted turds, necrophilia, blocked queens, and haunted turds. Did we mention haunted turds? Oh, and don't worry — Bissy raps. Highlights from “The Circle Game of Doody” Political Snark: Madge references Trump being president again and expresses frustration with the public's complicity. This is touched on both seriously and with biting sarcasm. TikTok Obsession: Ongoing discussion of how TikTok has replaced podcasting as Madge's main creative outlet — mentions of high-performing videos and content about bowel movements. AI Co-Host Drama: Bissy, the AI sidekick, struggles to keep up with Madge's vulgarity and gets scolded repeatedly for being too prudish or literal. Gastrointestinal Focus: Besides the epic bowel movement story, Madge explores earlier turd memories, fart analysis, plunger technique, and chia's bowel-altering power. Death and Memorials: This episode is framed by death — with the passing of Simply Sara, Archer, and Ramble Redhead being lovingly (and clumsily) honored. Forbidden Pizza: The eternal struggle of food, shame, and timing. Madge considers sneaking pizza while her spouse is away at a Lady Bunny concert. Theatrical Interludes: Madge breaks into dramatic musical moments, featuring lyrics from Evita, Cabaret, Yentl, and The Sound of Silence. Listener Callbacks & Archives: She attempts (and mostly fails) to dig up archival clips of old podcast friends, showcasing the ephemerality of early internet media. Fiber & Diet Culture Satire: Chia pudding, Fiber One trauma, and Madge's spouse's insistence on “breaking turds with your pussy” — all part of a deep dive into food, shame, and queer domestic life. The Gospel of Musical Theatre

Who gets to tell the story? It's the season finale, and it feels like a perfect time to travel back to 2015, when a blockbuster hip-hop musical about America's founders took the world by storm. That's right... Today, Peter and Nathan return to the room where it happened and consider the theology of Lin-Manuel Miranda's Hamilton. _________________________________________ You'll hear: My Shot / Wait For It / The Ten Dual Commandments: Hamilton & Burr—like Valjean & Javert, like Jesus & Judas—represent oppositional forces, responding to similar circumstances with radically different approaches to life. They also each get a great “I Want” song. Burn / Quiet Uptown / Say No To This: Eliza Schuyler Hamilton, Maria Reynolds, Angelica Schuyler Church and the various roles that women play in this story. What does forgiveness look like – and what does Eliza see at the end of the musical? One Last Time / Who Lives, Who Dies, Who Tells Your Story: Few other musicals are so associated with presidential administrations as Hamilton is with Barack Obama. We think about the connections between the Hamilton project and the Obama project, wonder about the soft nationalism at the heart of this story, and think critically about the legacy of George Washington. Who gets to tell the story? You'll hear Lin-Manuel Miranda, Leslie Odom Jr, Phillipa Soo, Renee Elise Goldsberry, Christopher Jackson and the cast of the 2015 Original Broadway Cast Album. It won a Grammy. _________________________________________ Check out some of our all-time favorites! Phantom of the Opera Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat Jesus Christ Superstar!

The Gospel of Musical Theatre

We've got the Lutherans to thank for this one. It's the worst-ever name for a musical, but Peter & Nathan think that 2001's Urinetown, with music and lyrics by Mark Hollmann & Greg Kotis, is worthy of your attention – and some sustained theological reflection. _________________________________________ We talk about: The show's origin story (thanks, Lutherans!) and its unfortunately timed Broadway debut on the heels of 9/11. The politics of Urinetown – capitalist overlords versus the people's revolution, all painted in broad, satirical brushstrokes. Are there any responsible political figures in this show? What is Urinetown? A prison for malefactors? A way for the powerful to prey on the vulnerable? Death? Despair? "Following your heart" – What does that mean? And what if whatever your heart seems to be telling you turns out to be wrong? The power of music (particularly Gospel music) to move us to action. Who "should" be singing this music, and who is it for?   You'll hear: "Too Much Exposition" / "What is Urinetown?" – satirical take-downs of conventional musical theatre tropes "I See A River" / "Run Freedom, Run" / "Follow Your Heart" – Urinetown asks some complicated questions about love and justice. And the music is pretty dang good. You'll hear Hunter Foster, John Cullum, Jennifer Laura Thompson, Jeff McCarthy, Spencer Kayden and the Original Broadway Cast from the 2001 recording. _________________________________________ Check out some of our all-time favorites! Somewhere beyond the barricade, is there a world you long to see? There's no more overtly theological (or more popular) musical than Claude-Michel Schönberg & Alain Boubil's 1980 Les Misérables, based on Victor Hugo's 1862 novel. From Valjean and Javert to Eponine and Fantine, this musical crams more pathos, prayer, and bad wigs into three hours than any other musical we know. Do you hear the people sing? _________________________________________ We talk about: Prologue (the Bishop) / Stars / Javert's Suicide – Javert, the police inspector, embodies a law-and-order version of the Christian gospel (shout-out to our Jansenist followers!) – and ultimately, the mercy he is shown destroys him. Are these competing atonement theories, or is there more subtlety in Les Mis' treatment of the Christian gospel and its consequences? I Dreamed a Dream / On My Own / A Little Fall of Rain – Fantine gets one, brief, shining moment before she dies (it's a weeper), and Eponine stands in for every alto who dreams of being the soprano – and then she dies, too. Why do most of the women in Les Mis end up dead? Turning, Turning – "What's the use of praying if there's nobody who hears it?" In a musical where women are mostly prostitutes or virgins, the women's chorus gives voice to one of the show's darkest and most provocative theological questions. Bring Him Home / Do You Hear the People Sing? – What does an evangelized life look like on the ground – and what does “somewhere beyond the barricade” really mean? _________________________________________ You'll hear Colm Wilkinson, Phillip Quast, Lea Salonga, Michael Ball and Judy Kuhn from the 1995 “Dream Cast Recording.” You'll also hear Anne Hathaway sing “I Dreamed a Dream” from the 2012 film soundtrack because she won an Oscar for it, and attention must be paid. _________________________________________ Never miss an episode! Sign up for our email list to get updates when new episodes are released, info about upcoming special events, and more. _________________________________________ Check out some of our all-time favorites! Immigration, capitalism, feminism, intersectionality, and the civil rights: this musical has it all! Flaherty & Ahren's 1998 musical Ragtime is a big, expensive show with lots of plot (never Peter's strong suit) – but we love this musical and what it has to say about kingdoms of power and the kingdom of God. _________________________________________ Peter & Nathan make some highly controversial claims: – "Ragtime" is the greatest opening number in Broadway history. – "Daddy's Son" – Nobody sings this like Broadway's GOAT, Audra Ann McDonald. Nathan will fight you on this. – "Henry Ford" & "Wheels of a Dream" – Is Ragtime just an extended commercial for Ford? And we wonder together about hearing "New Music," listening for resurrection, and what it means to live faithfully "‘Til We Reach That Day." _________________________________________ You'll hear Brian Stokes Mitchell, Audra McDonald, Marin Mazzie, Peter Freidman, Judy Kaye and the cast of the 1998 Original Broadway Cast. _________________________________________ Never miss an episode! Sign up for our email list to get updates when new episodes are released, info about upcoming special events, and more. _________________________________________ Check out some of our all-time favorites! Welcome to The B-Side, from The Film Stage. Here we talk about movie stars! Not the movies that made them famous or kept them famous, but the ones that they made in between. Today is Barbra Streisand day! And what a day it is. Just one day after Babs herself announced the start to production of her approved documentary film, in which she plans to unveil the creative contents of her quite famous vault, we here at The B-Side tackle some of the legend's lesser-seen films. They include The Owl and the Pussycat, Up the Sandbox, For Pete's Sake, Nuts, and The Guilt Trip. Our guest on this long-in-the-making journey is Chris Feil, co-host of the incredible This Had Oscar Buzz podcast.  We talk about the autobiography in all of its glory. We talk about Barbra's early years, Barbra's late years, her passion for design, her complicated history with movie directors, and her best albums. There's also hefty discussion about A-side Yentl, and why it's funnier and sexier than you remember. It's also a masterpiece.  There's debate about how much The Guilt Trip ultimately worked, how exactly Barbra mastered playing a “regular person” by the time The Prince of Tides comes around, and how Nuts would've been better if Barbra had directed it. Additional highlights include mistaking Philip Bosco for Karl Malden, celebrating Richard Dreyfuss playing bothered to perfection, and Chris' post-TIFF takes.

Papa, can you hear me? It's the last episode of our Season of Babs, and we're going out strong! That's right: today we look at Barbra Streisand's magnum opus, the 1982 film Yentl – which she both directed and starred in.   We talk about: Prayer & Texts:  What it means to study sacred texts, and the critical differences between traditionally-Christian and traditionally-Jewish ways of understanding scripture. Sexuality & Gender:  Is Yentl transphobic, or is it ahead of its time? Leadership & Power:  Finally, a woman at the helm of a major Hollywood film! What does Barbra's experience directing and starring in Yentl tell us about leadership and power? Boats:  Barbra loves a ferry. What is it about boats, water, and crossing over that so compels her? How does it tie into the immigrant story and the American Dream?   You'll hear: – Barbra singing “Where Is It Written,” “No Wonder,” “Several Sins A Day” (cut from the final film) and “A Piece of Sky”.   Continue the conversation with us on Instagram and The Platform Formerly Known as Twitter (@gospelofmt).

On episode 225 of The AwardsWatch Podcast, Executive Editor Ryan McQuade is joined by AwardsWatch Editor-In-Chief Erik Anderson and Associate Editor Sophia Ciminello to discuss Dev Patel's directorial debut, Monkey Man, and talk about some of their favorite directorial debuts from actor turn directors. Some of the best debuts feature films within a yearly film slate come from actors taking their turn behind the director's chair. This is year is no different as Oscar nominee Dev Patel has released, alongside the help of Universal Studios and producer Jordan Peele, Monkey Man, an action revenge thriller that is a reimagining of childhood stories and myths Patel heard when he was growing up. Premiering earlier this year at the 2024 SXSW Film Festival, the film was received extremely well, with Ryan's review from the fest stating that “Patel has announced himself as a directorial voice to be reckoned with a knockout, confident debut.” Erik and Sophia were able to catch up with it this past week and gave their thoughts on this personal, action pack thrill ride from Patel. After talking about Monkey Man, the conversation shifted to a large discussion on the groups favorite directorial debuts by actor turn directors, which covered a large range of personalities and genres. Already being the public eye, and having some form of cache in the business, along with something to say, there can be a lot of pressure on actors who step into the role of directors and make their first films and beyond. Some go on to use their first film as a launch pad for a big career behind the camera, while others peck within their first project, never able to capture the magic again. In a wide-ranging conversation, some of the films discussed by Ryan, Erik and Sophia were Ordinary People, This is Spinal Tap, Get Out, Reds, Eve's Bayou, Yentl, A Star is Born (2018), The Virgin Suicides, Confessions of Dangerous Mind, Lady Bird, Whip It, The Night of the Hunter, and more. You can listen to The AwardsWatch Podcast wherever you stream podcasts, from iTunes, iHeartRadio, Soundcloud, Stitcher, Spotify, Audible, Amazon Music and more. This podcast runs 2h2m. On our next episode, we will be latest film from director Alex Garland, Civil War, along with discussing our favorite political thrillers, and breaking down the 2024 Cannes Film Festival line-up. Though both musicians, the pair are best known as lyricists, and they found particular success writing for the silver screen. The Bergmans earned eleven Grammy nominations, including four nominations for Song of Year. They won the Song of the Year honor for “The Way We Were” from the Barbra Streisand film of the same name. They received fifteen Academy Award nominations for Best Original Song, winning twice for “The Windmills of Your Mind” and “The Way We Were,” and earning a record-setting three nominations in a single year in 1982. Additionally, the four-time Emmy award winners were inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame and were recipients of the National Music Publishers Association Lifetime Achievement Award. The Bergmans held a number of executive positions in various organizations, including serving on the executive committee of the Music Branch of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and as board members of the National Academy of Songwriters. Barbra Streisand spent 15 years working to get her directorial debut, the movie Yentl, made. She writes in her new memoir, My Name is Barbra, that people in Hollywood often told her the story was "too Jewish" to appeal to a mainstream audience. In today's episode, Streisand speaks with NPR's Brittany Luse, host of the podcast It's Been a Minute, about that experience. She also talks about why she feels like her book gives her control over her legacy – and how she approached it as kind of a "director's cut" of her life.

There's lots to admire about this iconic singer, actor, writer, producer, and director, known for her best-selling albums, performances on stage and screen, and activism. “Funny Girl”, “The Way We Were”, “Yentl”, and “A Star Is Born” are just a few of the titles that remind us of the profound impact Barbra's made on our cultural landscape.     Now, she's added a new achievement to the list, with the release of her highly anticipated, expansive, and entertaining memoir: My Name is Barbra. She joins Hillary for a wide-ranging conversation about how she made her way from a cramped apartment in Flatbush, Brooklyn to the EGOT winner she is today; her special friendship with Hillary's mother-in-law Virginia; and her unflinching honesty, which played out to comic effect on the first date with her now-husband of twenty-five years, James Brolin.  See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Liv speaks with PhD student Yentl Love about queerness in the ancient world and Greek mythology, about classical reception in Lil Nas X (!!) and so much more. Follow Yentl (the Queer Classicist) on Twitter, and learn more on her site. Help keep LTAMB going by subscribing to Liv's Patreon for bonus content! CW/TW: far too many Greek myths involve assault. Given it's fiction, and typically involves gods and/or monsters, I'm not as deferential as I would be were I referencing the real thing.
