Why Mexico is electing judges by popular vote

Next year, Mexico will become the first country in the world to begin electing all its judges by popular vote. The radical judicial reform was passed by the Senate in September, where the ruling Morena party hold a commanding majority. They argue the change will promote transparency and accountability in a justice system which has faced accusations of corruption, nepotism, and bowing to political and criminal pressure. But critics say it is a direct threat to democracy which weakens the ability of the judiciary to hold the government to account - including the Supreme Court. On today's episode, Lucy Hockings is joined by the BBC's correspondent in Mexico, Will Grant. They examine the politics behind this shakeup, and discuss why many members of the legal community are protesting the measures. The Global Story brings you trusted insights from BBC journalists worldwide. On Nov. 8, 1966, Edward William Brooke III, a Howard University graduate, made history as the first African American elected to the U.S. Senate by popular vote and the first Black politician from Massachusetts to serve in Congress. Born in Washington, D.C., Brooke majored in sociology before serving as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army and later earning a law degree from Boston University. Brooke chaired the Boston Finance Commission to tackle city corruption and, as Massachusetts' first Black attorney general, fought against corruption and housing discrimination. Winning his Senate seat with 62 percent of the vote, he became the first Black senator since Reconstruction. Though a moderate Republican, Brooke often challenged his party, opposing conservative Supreme Court nominees and calling for Nixon's resignation. Senator Brooke served from 1967 to 1979. Trump Secures Majority of White Women Voters Again As Harris Loses Popular Vote

AURN News

In an election that saw Vice President Kamala Harris become the first Democratic presidential candidate to lose the popular vote in 20 years, Donald Trump secured the majority of white women voters for the third consecutive time. Despite his controversial track record—overturning abortion rights, facing court rulings affirming sexual assault against E. Jean Carroll, and enduring opposition from women's advocacy groups—52% of white American women supported Trump. The outcome underscores a powerful, often underestimated, voting bloc. While Harris's campaign fixated on winning over the so-called “silent majority” of women, whom they believed might vote contrary to their households, it was ultimately Black men and women who continued to support her in significant numbers, while white women did not. Liberal anxieties about Harris's appeal to Black male voters, viewed as a potential liability, now seem misplaced as a larger demographic—white women—did not support Vice President Kamala Harris. The 2024 Presidential Election is here…And it ‘feels' as if our country is as divided as ever between our two candidates, former President, Donald J. Trump (R) and current Vice President, Kamala Harris (D).Much of the news coverage and social media posts are largely ‘Anti' one candidate over another rather than each side promoting what they stand for and why we should consider giving them our vote.Today, four members of the Critical Bench team discuss the political climate we are living in. A huge thank you to Tim Nixon, Samantha Harrison and David Sautter for participating. One thing we MUST remember as our friend Dr. Frank Turek says routinely on his podcast, Cross Examined: ‘We are not voting in one person to office. We are voting for a platform and policies. Our vote brings in an administration of 5,000 people to influence change in our country.'  We must also remember that both candidates are flawed, broken people and we need to look beyond their character issues, which they both have many, to see what they stand for and how will they influence law, policy and the American way of life for the next 4 years.Your vote matters!  "Whoever wins needs to have a diversification of thought, constituents and people voting for them.” -Tim Nixon  Time Stamps00:51 - Welcome to the Strong By Design podcast! 01:15 - Join us today as the Critical Bench Team hosts a special episode 04:04 - What would our forefathers think of us today? 08:25 - The CB team shares thoughts on the two-party system 19:54 - Are political views driving us apart? 27:45 - How do social media and the media shape our votes? 34:45 - How to remain united with different political views 39:19 - Sam shares powerful lessons from Adam Grant's book 42:22 - Popular Vote vs. Electoral College: What's the difference? 46:00 - Voting with due diligence: What you need to know 52:50 - Life's priorities: What really matters? 1:00:09 - What's the real definition of tolerance? 1:05:50 - Please share and leave ratings & reviews for the SBD podcast Resources:·       The Constitution of the United States of AmericaSupport the showConnect w/ CriticalBench: Youtube Facebook Instagram CriticalBench.com StrongByDesignPodcast.com

The Alan Sanders Show

Today's show entirely focused on yesterday's landslide win, both electorally as well as in the popular count, by Donald Trump. We open with comments being made prior to any polls closing. We listen to the glib, smug condescension of Leftist media and how it eventually begins to degrade and somber as the night went along. As they fears of a Kamala loss began to settle in, they started coming up with excuses for it. The only person I could find who had any sense of true introspection was Scott Jennings on CNN. He coined what they do as the “political information complex” and suggested they are at fault for a lot of the misinformation and wrong expectations. But, the Legacy/mainstream media is not about to truly admit their culpability. Instead, they are throwing around terms such as racists, misogynistic and people who refuse to accept cultural diversity. It's all nonsense, which means, they will never really learn. So, turn them off. Relegate them to the trash bin of history. Turn to the New Media and never look back, except for comedic reasons.  As we close, there is some good already happening. There is rumor that CEO's of five Big Pharma companies scheduled an emergency call today. And, on top of that, it looks like the DOJ is looking to stop any more work in the prosecutions of Donald Trump. Ultimately, let's remember, they are a wounded animal and still quite dangerous. They are going to do all they can to sabotage Trump's incoming term. They will leave land mines everywhere, only to use them as a means to attack him and his agenda. Don't let that happen. Stay firm. Stay resolute. Stay supportive. Please take a moment to rate and review the show and then share the episode on social media. A Note from James:"So in a few hours, as I am saying this. The election of 2024 will begin. I'm doing this podcast on Monday evening, and I wanted to address a couple of important issues that people don't seem to know about in terms of how a presidential election in the United States works. And in particular, there are a couple of loopholes where I think it is possible to legally cheat in this election, and I'm not talking about either candidate but the big question that has been on my mind and on many people's minds, is it possible to quote-unquote, legally cheat in an election?"Episode Description:In this episode, recorded on the eve of the 2024 U.S. presidential election, I dive deep into the complexities of the U.S. electoral system and explore potential legal loopholes that might allow for what I call 'legal cheating' in an election. I clarify that this discussion is unbiased, focusing neither on Democrats nor Republicans specifically. I explain how the U.S. Constitution and state legislatures play key roles in the election process, the distinctions between a popular vote and the electoral college, and historical precedents that could impact the integrity of the election. We also explore scenarios where state legislatures could manipulate the process, the implications of Trump's impeachment for insurrection, and how these factors play out in a tightly contested election. While shedding light on these potential loopholes, I emphasize their improbability but underscore the importance of understanding them. Send us a textRanked Choice Voting (RCV) is an electoral system in which voters rank candidates by preference (1st, 2nd, 3rd, etc.) rather than voting for a single candidate. If no candidate wins a majority of first-preference votes, the candidate with the fewest first choices is eliminated, and votes for that candidate are transferred to voters' next choices. This process continues until a candidate earns more than 50% of the vote.Benefits of RCV over Popular Vote or Electoral College:Greater voter representation: RCV ensures that the winner reflects a majority preference, which may better represent the will of the voters. It helps to prevent a candidate from winning with only a small plurality in a multi-candidate race.Reduces “spoiler” effect: In traditional voting systems, third-party or less popular candidates can split votes, leading to a winner that doesn't have majority support. With RCV, voters can rank their true preference without fear of "wasting" a vote, since their secondary choices still count if their first choice is eliminated.Discourages negative campaigning: Candidates benefit from being ranked second or third by opponents' supporters. This can promote more civil and cooperative campaigning, as candidates seek broader appeal beyond their core base.Greater choice: Voters can express support for a wider range of candidates without the pressure to “strategically” choose only between the frontrunners. This allows for more diverse candidates, including independents and third-party contenders.Addresses gerrymandering: While RCV doesn't directly combat gerrymandering (the manipulation of district boundaries), it can make races in gerrymandered districts more competitive by ensuring winners have broader support, potentially mitigating its effects. In conclusion, Ranked Choice Voting can offer a more representative, inclusive, and fair system of voting compared to both the popular vote and Electoral College models. However, its adoption at a national level would require considerable legal, political, and logistical changes.Support the show

SERIES 3 EPISODE 44: COUNTDOWN WITH KEITH OLBERMANN A-Block (1:44) SPECIAL COMMENT: We are now at the eugenics stage of Trump morphing into Hitler. We are now at the they-murder-white-people-because-it's-in-their-genes stage. I'm not exaggerating and I am just barely paraphrasing. Trump has now moved one step closer to eugenics, to classifying entire races and nationalities as genetically criminal, to fully embracing the nightmare insanity of Adolf Hitler, to ethnic cleansing and persecution of immigrants because he thinks they WILL commit murder. As Politico described it, a “blood libel,” in an interview with the conservative bobble-head doll of commentators, Hugh Hewitt. Trump quoted his fabricated number of 13,000 murderers migrating across the border, insisting murder is in "the genes" and "we got a lot of bad genes in our country right now.” Later with Laura Ingraham Trump didn't get quite as literal about eugenics but he did say quote “I will keep you safe. I'm not going to allow prisoners to come out from Venezuela… the Congo… the Middle East… Yemen. I'm going to keep you safe. I'm not going to let them help you.” I don't know how much more he has to tell this country before even the coalition of the stupid and the hateful realize that sooner rather than later, a Trump returned to power will attempt to STAY in power beyond his expiration date, by killing somebody they LIKE. Even a tech bro. Or an Aryan with not enough Aryan blood. Or Nick Fuentes because, oops, Fuentes is the same name as some of them immigrants. Or JD Vance because Trump has a really bad loyalty record with Vice Presidents. ALSO: If Republicans keep insisting Democrats are controlling the weather doesn't that imply that Trump was unable to? Musk is now bribing people $47 to sign up for his Trump PAC. He's going to campaign for Trump in Pennsylvania (his favorability is worse than Vance's). And an explanation from Nate Silver as to what kind of Popular Vote victory translates into what kind of Electoral College victory. B-Block (26:30) THE WORST PERSONS IN THE WORLD: Anybody remember the JD Vance/Trump/GOP lie about Haitian immigrants killing and eating geese and pets in Springfield, Ohio? They've convicted the geese guy. His name is Brian and he ain't from Haiti. Jake Tapper opens himself up to fact-checking, or the lack thereof. And the hockey writer who dilutes the Johnny Gaudreau tragedy for a cute line in a season preview. C-Block (34:30) THINGS I PROMISED NOT TO TELL: Howard Stern interviewing Vice President Kamala Harris? I wonder if they'll bring up what they were both doing half a century ago today. Because the odds are pretty good that half a century ago today, Howard was...meeting me. And if the anniversary isn't today, it's dang soon.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

However, with a little over a month until Election Day, the candidates continue to concentrate much of their efforts on battleground states. Director of the FOX News Decision Desk, Arnon Mishkin, evaluates the recent poll, why former President Trump's numbers aren't changing much, and why the Electoral College matters more than the popular vote.  With a total of 19 electoral votes, many consider Pennsylvania a 'must-win' state on election night. With just weeks until the 2024 Presidential Election, Vice President Harris and former President Trump are still fighting to break the tie in the Keystone State. Director of the Muhlenberg College Institute of Public Opinion Christopher Borick discusses what's at the top of voters' minds this election cycle and explains what makes Pennsylvania such a competitive state.
