Of course, if you read SKTCHD or listen to Off Panel every week, these questions are easy to answer. For years, David Harper has been our go-to source for what's happening within the comics industry, and due to recent events in his own life, he's upped his game and committed to comics journalism in a fashion he previously has not. Can the industry sustain him? That all depends on us. This week, we chat with David Harper about his total immersion into SKTCHD/Off Panel. We confront him about his pivot to video, the state of comics journalism, and how he ignores the recurring Chicken Little screams of “The sky is falling.” It's not all so dire, though. We also discuss his ideal comic book shop and the books he's absolutely loving in 2025. Stories and storytellers are vital to human existence, but for various, always frustrating, reasons, we must continually be reminded of this. Paloma Efron era su nombre real fue cantante, actriz, productora, conductora de televisión y radio, periodista y una referente para la cultura nacional. Nació en Basavilbaso, provincia de Entre Ríos, el 6 de diciembre de 1912 y murió el 3 de septiembre de 1977. Conocida como Blackie, rompió con todos los paradigmas de su época e impuso su carácter y profesionalismo. Desde pequeña incursió en el canto y, si bien sabía hablar perfectamente inglés, francés, italiano, portugués y alemán, además por supuesto de español, sus primeras interpretaciones fueron en idish. Posteriormente, sumó a su repertorio temas de música gospel y, fundamentalmente, de jazz. En 1934, con apenas 21 años, ganó un concurso en Radio Stentor patrocinado por Jabón Federal, donde cantó Stormy Weather, de Harold Arlen y Ted Koehler, y eso le permitió sumarse a la orquesta Los dados negros, lo que le dio una gran visibilidad. Vivió seis años en Harlem, Nueva York, donde estudió Antropología en la Universidad de Columbia y volvió a la Argentina con el pseudónimo de Blackie (Negrita), que había adquirido cantando junto a las más prestigiosas bandas de jazz de la época. Volvió a la radio, donde impuso los programas de diálogo, dio sus primeros pasos en el cine además de comenzar a trabajar en el Teatro Maipo, junto a Pepe Arias. Su gran desafío estuvo en la televisión, donde empezó a trabajar como productora y en 1954 llegó uno de sus mayores éxitos “Cita con las estrellas”, ciclo en el que, a partir de las imágenes de su álbum personal, Blackie contaba historias y anécdotas de sus encuentros con destacadas figuras que había conocido a lo largo de su carrera. Otros de sus éxitos fueron “Volver a Vivir”, “Derecho a réplica”; también condujo Odol pregunta, recordado concurso de interés general, y produjo programas de entretenimientos populares como el mítico Yo me quiero casar, ¿y usted? y Titanes en el ring. Tras un largo recorrido, en 1976 volvió a ponerse frente a una pantalla en Canal 9 con el ciclo La mujer, en el que contaba con la colaboración de Horacio de Dios, Dionisia Fontán, Jorge D'Urbano, Carlos Burone y Bernardo Ezequiel Koremblit. Con el cuerpo deteriorado por su adicción al trabajo y al cigarrillo, fue internada a causa de una úlcera estomacal por la que fue intervenida quirúrgicamente y, al tiempo, murió tras sufrir un infarto, cuando tenía 64 años. En su honor y a instancias de Fanny Mandelbaum, se declaró el 6 de diciembre, fecha de su natalicio, como el Día del productor de Radio y Televisión en la Argentina. “Do you see?” We never imagined discussing an Event Horizon comic on the podcast, but the moment the notion was floated, we were enthralled. The original 1997 movie, directed by Paul W.S. Anderson, struck a chord back in the day, but it was also a movie that was obviously jumbled about and fumbled in the editing room. And since the story relied on the device of a spaceship lost in a black hole/literal hell for decades, it so easily allows for prequel expansion. All that's required are the perfect creators to expand the material. Maybe even mend some of it. Christian Ward and Tristan Jones are the perfect creators for Event Horizon. If you've read their work, especially Ward's time on Batman: City of Madness and Jones' time on Aliens, you're probably already subscribed to the new prequel series from IDW Publishing. Event Horizon: Dark Descent tells the story of the original starship crew who ignited the Gravity Drive, popped into the space between spaces, and found their damnation in the abyss. It's always a pleasure to have Christian Ward on the podcast, but this week, that's especially true because we're all geeking out about the original movie, discussing how it influences all of his work, and why prequels are a damn good narrative delivery system.
