On this episode S.B. Divya is back, her 2021 novel Machinehood was one of my top reads of that year, and in 2023 she is back to discuss the novel she hinted at with us before. Her new novel Meru is one of the best character-driven Science Fiction novels I have read in some time. Set 900 years in our future Meru is a story about Transhumanism, colonialism and it has an interesting romance at its core. A masterwork of World-building and big ideas this conversation is a fun one for those interested in the state-of-the-art craft of Sci-fi. The first 45 minutes is spoiler free, and after a spoiler warning, we really get into the nuts and bolts of Divya's process. So read Meru and join us for the whole thing! •You can find my books here: Amazon-https://www.amazon.com/David-Agranoff/e/B004FGT4ZW •And me here: Goodreads-http://www.goodreads.com/author/show/2988332.David_Agranoff Twitter-https://twitter.com/DAgranoffAuthor Blog-http://davidagranoff.blogspot.com/
Arcx is all about literary inspiration. In this six episode mini-series, we talk to six South Asian sci fi, fantasy and speculative fiction writers, tracing their ideas from conception to execution. Today, we're in conversation with SB Divya, author, editor and engineer with an encyclopaedic knowledge of sci-fi and speculative fiction. Divya's work is a fascinating mix of her professional and personal backgrounds, with great science and even better storylines. Her debut novella, Runtime, was nominated for a Nebula award and her first novel Machinehood also received Hugo and Nebula nominations. She has been recognized for her work on the Escape Pod and her short fiction has been published in a variety of magazines and anthologies. Stay tuned for a conversation about the books that she grew up with, how being an editor helped her as a writer, privacy, healthcare and religion in sci-fi. It's award season! We have Nebulas, we have Mythopoeics, we have Nommos. We also have some nice reviews of the show, and we wrap up our thoughts on Machinehood by S.B. Divya. It made us think!
The hope of science fiction spurred by a science museum, Dracula by email, why it's called a tetralogy and our non-spoilery thoughts on Machinehood, and our goodbyes to friend of the show, Jenny Colvin.
Our annual shortlist book club is back! We read two novels that were nominated for Best Novel in the Nebula Awards! SB Divya’s “Machinehood” is a near-future story of gig workers, weak AI servants, and rebellious space stations. Jason Sanford’s “Plague Birds” is a post-apocalyptic story about strong AIs and gene-altered people that’s so far in the future that it feels almost like fantasy. Plus: We recommend other books we’ve enjoyed recently! Host Jason Snell with Erika Ensign and Scott McNulty.

One of the best books I read this year is a new science fiction novel by debut novelist S.B. Diviya. This novel Machinehood is a smart and effective novel. The grandest of science fiction are the tales you can hold up like a mirror to the issues of today. Even more grand are novels that decades like still feel like they are that mirror. I suspect it will be in conversation during award season. Diviya has spent 20 years as an electrical engineer in various fields including pattern recognition, machine intelligence, high-speed communications, digital music, and medical devices. Machinehood, is published by Saga Press, and her short story collection, Contingency Plans for the Apocalypse and Other Possible Situations, is published by Hachette India. Her Novella Runtime was nominated for the 2016 Nebula Award for Best Novella. She is still a working engineer and the Co-Editor for Escape Pod, along with Mur Lafferty. In this conversation, we talk about her science fiction roots, her science training, and the writing of Machinehood. It is mostly spoiler-free but I do give a warning when I dive into the story stuff deeper. https://sbdivya.com/ •You can find my books here: Amazon-https://www.amazon.com/David-Agranoff/e/B004FGT4ZW •And me here: Goodreads-http://www.goodreads.com/author/show/2988332.David_Agranoff Twitter-https://twitter.com/DAgranoffAuthor Blog-http://davidagranoff.blogspot.com/
