81% of people work after dinner, drowning in back to back Zoom meetings where they doodle under the table, only to do real work at night. Sound familiar? In this episode, I sit down with Juliet Funt, author and consultant who helps companies turn scrap time into steel, transforming low value work into high purpose, innovative time. We dive into the signs of toxic culture, why anxious deference to the CEO is a red flag, and how to spot when you're stuck in an unhealthy organization. Juliet shares her unconventional path from growing up as Alan Funt's daughter (yes, from Candid Camera) to discovering the power of white space, taking four years to world school her three boys across 14 countries, and why most executives need therapy. Plus, we tackle the fascinating question: do people change via desire or disaster? Her answer might surprise you. If you've ever felt like you're spending unspeakable amounts of time doing work you hate, this conversation will change how you think about your day.Juliet Funt on Linked InJFG Can HelpWasted Payroll CalculatorIn This Episode:Grab your very own Soundtracks: The Conversations Card DeckMake sure to follow me on Instagram and share with your friends!Keep up with my book list on GoodReads!Sign up for my newsletter, Try This!Book me to speak at your event or to your team! You can grab a copy of my book All It Takes Is a Goal from your favorite bookstore or at my website!Sign up for the Remarkable You Community today!Sign up for the Remarkable You Community today!

Even After This by Deborah Clack When you're ready to live again, love often has a way of finding you. Four years after tragedy, Meredith Harper is tired of hiding in her corner of Texas and living life like a game of dodgeball. She packs up her grief, awkward social graces, and sizable life insurance in search of a vacation and investment property in Colorado Springs. A botched dinner reservation throws her into the path of a bona fide movie star, and Meredith pushes through her comical celebrity neurosis to discover he is charming but a terrible dancer. A viral video of a daring rescue makes Harlan Holcombe's celebrity star stronger, with millions of his fans deeming him a real-life Hercules. But a minute of heroism doesn't absolve his past mistakes. As Harlan and Meredith spend more time together, he helps her believe there might be more for her not just in life but in love. And she might be part of the solution to restore the legacy he fears is tarnished. But what happens when the path to redeem his mistakes collides with the path to redeem her loss? A poignant and humorous contemporary romance of second chances with swoon but no spice, grief and healing, celebrity meets reluctant widow, love after loss, and new beginnings. Are you a Christian who loves fantasy and science fiction, but is tired of stories that mock, dismiss, or outright attack faith? You're not alone. In this episode of Fantasy for the Ages, Jim shares 10 outstanding fantasy and sci-fi reading recommendations for Christians who want great storytelling that aligns with, explores, or is deeply informed by a Christian worldview. These aren't sermons in disguise—but thoughtful, imaginative, and often powerful stories that wrestle with good and evil, sacrifice, redemption, hope, and what it means to live faithfully in a broken world.Rather than a single Top 10, this video breaks the recommendations into three ranked categories:• Books where Christianity is an explicit and central focus• Stories where Christian belief is foundational but not front-and-center• Genre classics heavily shaped by Christian themes and moral frameworksFeatured works include Pilgrims, The Screwtape Letters, The Chronicles of Narnia, Dune, and The Lord of the Rings — along with several others that Christian readers consistently find meaningful and uplifting.Whether you're looking for encouragement, inspiration, or simply a good book that won't leave you discouraged, this list is for you.
Oh, my! When I heard about Amber Gabriel writing about a supervillain going through "rehab" to become a hero, I knew I had to know more. Listen in and learn all about her "Rubber Bandit," and the world in which she wrote him. note: links may be affiliate links that provide me with a small commission at no extra expense to you. I had so much fun learning about the world in which Amber Gabriel wrote this book, and boy am I going to have to read both of Amber's books in this world as well as those by H. L. Burke Bouncing Back by Amber Gabriel Being a supervillain is easy. Being a hero has costs. When Elam Bentley, formerly known as the infamous supervillain Rubber Bandit, agreed to enter the Supervillain Rehabilitation Project to train to be a hero, he didn't realize the sacrifices he'd have to make. Faced with teammates who don't trust him, former villains who see him as a traitor, and the prospect of making restitution for his past misdeeds, Elam doubts he has the ability to stick to the hero path. Knowing that his team leader, stressed-out single mom Rightcross, has put everything on the line to back his rehabilitation, raises the stakes even higher. He can't let her down. An investigation of slot machine manipulation leads to a tangled conspiracy ... and to someone targeting Rightcross and her team. Elam might be new to the hero world, but he knows how to think like a villain. He might just be the key to unraveling the mystery and keeping herself and her daughter safe—if only he can keep himself from falling for her in the process. Some characters are great on their own.But put the right two together, and magic happens. In this episode of Fantasy for the Ages, Jim & Zach dive into the Best Duos in Fantasy & Sci-Fi — across books, movies, and television — focusing on the pairs whose chemistry, banter, loyalty, and conflict make their stories better. These are the duos who:• Steal scenes every time they're together• Elevate the world and the main plot• Balance humor, heart, and tension• And often end up being just as memorable as the heroes themselvesFrom ride-or-die friendships to uneasy alliances to partnerships forged under fire, we're celebrating the pairs that prove great stories aren't just about individuals, they're about relationships.⚠️ This episode is spoiler-light, keeping the focus on why these duos work rather than what ultimately happens to them.

Is The Running Man (2025) the rare remake that's actually better than the original?I went into this one as a fan of the 1987 Schwarzenegger classic—campy, quotable, and unmistakably of its era. But this new adaptation takes a very different approach: darker, smarter, more faithful to Stephen King's novel, and far more interested in making a point than cracking jokes. In this spoiler-lite review, I break down why The Running Man (2025) is a far more serious, fully realized dystopian sci-fi film than its predecessor—one with top-notch production value, a strong central performance from Glen Powell, and themes that feel uncomfortably relevant in today's media-obsessed world. That said… this movie is not for everyone. If you're looking for pure escapist fun, over-the-top villains, and one-liners you can quote for decades, this might not be your jam. But if you want sci-fi that actually makes you think—and maybe squirm a little—this one deserves your attention. In this episode, I cover:• How the 2025 film differs from the 1987 original• Why this version feels truer to Stephen King's intent• Glen Powell's performance and rise as a leading man• Who will love this movie, and who absolutely won't• Whether we should finally stop comparing everything to Arnie (sorry, Arnie)Now it's your turn:
How does God meet us in our toughest places in life when we feel the weakest? JD King, pastor, multi-published author, and thought leader, addresses challenging questions that so many of us wrestle with. In this compelling conversation, JD King opens up about journeying through hardship and how the biblical story of Gideon speaks directly to our battles with anxiety, stress, and identity crises. Together, Tina Yeager and JD King tackle topics like overcoming shame, navigating seasons when it feels like you have nothing left, and discovering God's strength right in the middle of your struggles. Through powerful insights from his book "Mighty Like Gideon" and practical wisdom from his pastoral experience, JD King shares how we can move forward one step at a time—even if it means doing it afraid. You'll also hear encouragement for those in the "pit," the connection between life's tests and our growth, and how God's love and holiness transform our shame into hope. Get ready to be equipped and uplifted as we answer honest questions of faith and discover how to experience God's goodness—even in the toughest places. Key takeaways: Identity is not defined by circumstances. As JD King shared, like Gideon, we often see ourselves as unqualified, but God calls us beyond our insecurities and into a new identity rooted in hope and purpose. Our challenges are opportunities. Just as resistance strengthens trees, adversity builds our spiritual and emotional capacity. We don't need to label every tough season as a "test"—what matters is pressing forward, seeking hope, and remaining open to growth. It's okay not to have all the answers. Authenticity and faith mean sitting with hard questions and allowing God's presence—sometimes overwhelming and awe-inspiring—to meet us exactly where we are. Growth comes as we step forward, even when we're afraid. Connect with JD King and Resources: Visit jdking.net for blogs, books, and to connect with JD personally. Patrick Lencioni built a multimillion-dollar business, sold 10 million books, and became one of the most influential leadership voices in the world. But here's what you might not know: he never had a five-year plan, turned down opportunities to scale, and prioritized loving his work over maximizing revenue. In this episode, Pat shares the behind-the-scenes story of building The Table Group, why he kept his team at just 15 full-time employees while empowering thousands of consultants, and how saying no to growth actually gave him an unfair competitive advantage. You'll discover why his wife gave him their house fund to start the business, how he protects time with his family despite constant opportunities, and why one of their core values is "we want to love coming to work every day." I loved Tim's heart for people, cycling, and the Lord as we chatted about his books, his later-in-life marriage, and their own long cycling trips! And I'm really glad my husband likes to cycle alone! Far away from tunnels. The Road Unveiled by Tim Bishop Two wounded hearts. Long, winding roads. And second chances neither saw coming. Lauren Baumgartner pedals toward Yellowstone National Park, anticipating a grand celebration when she reaches the Atlantic Ocean. But when her wedding plans collapse, old wounds resurface—and a haunting secret still holds her heart hostage. Traveling alone with bear spray and a one-woman tent, she shares the highway with motorcyclists bound for a massive rally, including gang members who eye her as theirs for the taking. Doug Zimmer, another lone cyclist, is grappling with loss and wondering if anyone will be alongside him when he figures out what's next. He isn't the only one drawn to Lauren's vitality and spirit. But Lauren may already be in too deep. What she faces on the Golden Prairie Indian Reservation tests her courage—and her faith—more than anything she encountered as a missionary in Uganda. A woman with a secret and a man healing from loss pedal the rugged roads of the American West on a quest for love and purpose that leads to unexpected horizons. What makes an opening scene truly unforgettable? In this episode of Fantasy for the Ages, Jim and Zach count down their Top 10 Opening Scenes in Fantasy & Sci-Fi — across books, movies, and television. These are the moments that hooked us instantly, set the tone for everything that followed, and made us say, “Oh… I'm in.”We're talking about opening scenes that:• Instantly establish tone, stakes, and voice• Redefine a genre or subgenre• Still hit just as hard on a rewatch or reread• Made us trust the storyteller within minutes (or even seconds)From iconic first lines on the page, to jaw-dropping cinematic prologues, to TV pilots that changed the game, these openings didn't just start a story — they announced something special.⚠️ This episode is spoiler-light, focusing on why these openings work rather than ruining what comes next.
Do you enjoy your science fiction with humor, while still delivering big ideas, hard-SF concepts, action, and genuine heart? In this episode, I (Jim) dive into We Are Legion (We Are Bob) by Dennis E. Taylor, the first book in the wildly popular Bobiverse series. This is smart, funny, binge-worthy science fiction that asks huge questions about identity, AI, and what it really means to be human… even when you're technically a self-replicating space probe. After wanting to expand my sci-fi reading and hearing many of you recommend this series, a two-for-one Audible sale finally pushed this book to the top of my TBR. And let me tell you, I had so much fun that I immediately committed to reading the rest of the series in order. Time to binge, baby.In this spoiler-lite review, I talk about:• Why Bob Johansson is such a wildly relatable protagonist• How the clone/replication premise actually works• The balance of hard science and accessible storytelling• The humor, heart, and hopeful tone of the story• Who this book is perfect for — and who it might NOT work for• And why this is such a great entry point into modern science fictionIf you've been curious about the Bobiverse, or if you're looking for a sci-fi read that's both clever and incredibly fun, this might be exactly what you're looking for.⸻

Of course, no one writes Biblical Fiction like Tessa Afshar, and her new book in the Queen Esther's Court series has such a cool premise. Listen in as we talk about her fun research and a bit of Persian culture and history! note: links may be affiliate links that provide me with a small commission at no extra expense to you. I think one of the coolest parts of our conversation had to do with Tessa taking pottery classes with her husband and how it gave her context for her character as well for Scripture! The Royal Artisan by Tessa Afshar Sazana of Persia creates exquisite pottery that graces Susa's finest tables, but her master, Lord Haman, does not know her secret: Sazana is one of the Jews he has vowed to eradicate. When Haman discovers her true identity, he forces her into indentured servitude. But at Haman's sudden downfall, Queen Esther becomes the new master of the pottery workshop, restoring Sazana to her rightful place. Yet her troubles are not over as Haman's sons are enraged by his death, and the queen assigns one of her men to root out any threats. What happens when a past wrong refuses to stay buried? In this episode, I dive into The Only Good Indians by Stephen Graham Jones, a modern horror novel that twists familiar haunting and revenge tropes into something deeply unsettling, emotionally sharp, and completely its own. After falling in love with The Indian Lake Trilogy, I spent about a year working my way up to this book, where many readers first encounter Stephen Graham Jones' unmistakable voice. And wow… this one delivers. We'll talk about:• Why Jones' authorial voice is so unique in the horror space• How this novel reimagines haunting and revenge• His continued fascination with (and reinvention of) the final girl trope• Why this is a quick, low-commitment read that still hits hard• And why I think this is a great first Stephen Graham Jones book for new readersThis is horror that lingers — not just because of what it shows you, but because of what it asks you to sit with afterward. If you've read The Only Good Indians, I'd love to hear your take in the comments. And if this is your first time considering Stephen Graham Jones… this might be the perfect place to start.⸻

Science fiction isn't one-size-fits-all.Some readers love big ideas and long-term strategy.Others want emotional depth, character-driven stories, or fast, cinematic action. And here's the thing: your personality plays a huge role in the kind of sci-fi you love.In this episode of Fantasy for the Ages, I'm matching science fiction reading recommendations to common Myers-Briggs personality types. Using the same framework as our fantasy episode, I take 10 of the most common personality types and pair each one with two sci-fi series that align with how those readers tend to think, feel, and engage with speculative ideas.Whether you're a systems thinker, a people-first reader, a big-picture strategist, or someone who just wants sci-fi that moves, there's something here that fits you.

How can we find hope through trials? Gina Fox, founder of the Anchored by the Sword ministry and award-winning author of Anchored in Freedom, relates from her deeply personal journey through infertility, loss, and mental health struggles, and opens up about how she discovered hope even in her darkest moments. Together, host Tina Yeager and Gina Fox explore the power of faith, authentic support, and the importance of not comparing one person's pain to another. Whether you're in the midst of your own trial or supporting someone who is, this episode is filled with practical wisdom and heartfelt encouragement to help you find light in the darkest valleys. Stay tuned as we uncover how God can turn even the most painful seasons into stories of hope and freedom. Key Takeaways: Embracing Real Emotions: Gina Fox openly shares how anger and sadness were part of her healing—and why it's important to acknowledge those feelings without shame. Even Jesus felt anger, and it's okay for us to process our emotions, too. Seeking Support: Don't go it alone. Whether through friends, community, or a counselor, inviting trusted people in makes a difference. Gina encourages everyone to reach out to at least one "safe person." Finding God's Hope: No matter your trial, God meets you uniquely in your story. Gina reminds us that each journey is different—there's no need to compare your struggles with someone else's, but do bring God into every step and ask Him to provide hope and help. Simple Steps When Life Feels Dark: Just take the next step, even if it's as small as getting out of bed. The Psalms are a great place to start in the Bible. Let your community and God walk with you, especially when things feel overwhelming. You Are Not Alone: Above all, Gina wants you to know that there is always hope, even in the darkest moments. "God's got this, and He's got you." Want More? Grab Gina's book, Anchored in Freedom, on Amazon or get the first chapter FREE when you join her email list at anchoredbythesword.org. Back in 2008, I wrote a review of The Heroine's Journey on Goodreads. At the time, I was developing Mythellaneous, which was a clown hero's journey, so I was very excited to read this book, which was meant to be a women's version of the famous hero's journey as described by Joseph Campebll. Unfortunately, The Heroine's Journey was disappointing and generally kind of facile and old fashioned. It did not help me in the creation of that show.Over the years, I have noticed likes coming through for this review, more than any other book on my list. Why can't leaders win anymore? No matter what you say, someone's upset. In this conversation with Carey Nieuwhof, host of one of today's most influential leadership podcasts, we unpack why 49 hours a week on our phones has created 100 different experiences in a room of 100 people. From the woman who won't use plastic cutlery to why your weird uncle believes conspiracy theories, we explore how discipleship by algorithm is fragmenting society. We also talk about the false immediacy of social media, why high performers have the strongest inner critics, the Mount Rushmore of books we recommend, and what it takes to build relationships with people you admire without jumping levels of intimacy. Plus, Carey shares why the work is the reward, how he retaught himself to read books, and why he's pursuing mastery in his 60s. Too often we forget that part of England was under German occupation during WWII, but Sarah Sundin and I chatted about her newest release that takes place on Jersey. note: links may be affiliate links that provide me with a small commission at no extra expense to you. We chatted about the way the different Channel Islands spent the war. Sarah had so many cool things she'd learned during research to share. And, I loved learning about her characters and how she came up with her story. Excellent! Mists over the Channel Islands by Sarah Sundin Behind enemy lines, adversary and ally become impossible to distinguish. The German invasion of the British Channel Islands shatters Dr. Ivy Picot's peaceful world, forcing her to shoulder the weight of her father's medical practice and hold together a family unraveling under the strain of war. As conditions worsen in Jersey with the arrival of thousands of forced laborers, Ivy's quiet allegiance to the Allies compels her to risk everything by providing medical aid to escaped workers--even as danger closes in. Dutch engineer and resistance member Gerrit van der Zee volunteers to build fortifications for the Germans so he can secretly send maps and diagrams to the Allies. On his arrival in the Channel Islands, he crosses paths with Ivy, who shows him contempt for the uniform he wears. As tensions mount and their missions grow increasingly dangerous, Ivy and Gerrit must confront the cost of courage, the meaning of sacrifice, and whether love can survive in the shadow of war. Will their covert efforts turn the tide--or will they pay the ultimate price for defiance? Renowned WWII fiction author Sarah Sundin crafts a compelling historical romance featuring enemies-to-lovers, wartime resistance, and medical intrigue--a tale of loyalty, resilience, and courage when love and duty collide. Harry Dresden has survived apocalypses. But surviving after one? That's another story entirely. In this episode of Fantasy for the Ages, Jim reviews The Dresden Files Book 18, Twelve Months by Jim Butcher — a novel that trades nonstop spectacle for something far more powerful: grief, healing, responsibility, and growth.Set in the year following the devastating Battle of Chicago, Twelve Months follows Harry Dresden as he struggles to process trauma, loss, guilt, and the weight of everything he's survived. This is a quieter Dresden book in some ways — but also one that meaningfully advances the overarching story, deepens relationships, and delivers a strong, satisfying climax. In this spoiler-lite review, Jim discusses:• Why Twelve Months may be some of Jim Butcher's best writing• How realistically the book handles grief, loss, and recovery• The evolving (and complicated) relationship between Harry Dresden and Lara Raith• Major story progression for the series as a whole• Why Harry Dresden remains one of fantasy's great long-form protagonists• Who will love this book, and who might struggle with its pacing or approachIf you're a longtime Dresden fan, this is an essential discussion. And if you've been waiting to see whether Twelve Months was worth the long wait since Battle Ground — this review is for you.

Ever wonder why certain fantasy books instantly click for you… while others just don't?It might not be the book. It might be you.In this episode of Fantasy for the Ages, I'm matching fantasy book recommendations to common personality types, using the Myers-Briggs framework as a fun (and surprisingly accurate) way to think about reading taste. We all see the world a little differently—and that shapes the stories we're drawn to. Some readers crave structure and epic moral weight. Others want emotional depth, wild imagination, or nonstop momentum. Today, I take 10 of the most common personality types and pair each with two fantasy series that align beautifully with how those readers think, feel, and engage with story.Whether you're duty-driven, big-picture strategic, emotionally intuitive, or just here for the chaos and fun—there's a fantasy series here that fits you.

When your past comes back and shakes up your present, what are you supposed to do? Listen in as Stacy Ladyman and I chat about her novel, Shep and the King of Hearts. note: links may be affiliate links that provide me with a small commission at no extra expense to you. We talked about the origin of this story and how parts of her life inspired her to attend that gambling addiction talk and then how it helped her define this story. I loved that she got to talk to those men and had pastors praying for her and the story. It's a beautiful picture of how we're all broken and estranged and need to get back to a right relationship with each other and God. Shep and the King of Hearts by Stacy J. Ladyman Some wounds run deep. Love digs deeper. As a hospital administrator, Chris Warren thrives on order, control, and clean emotional boundaries. But when the father who abandoned her decades ago stumbles back into her life—disheveled, addicted, and clinging to what little dignity he has left—everything she's built begins to unravel. Desperate for answers—and closure—Chris finds herself reluctantly leaning on Shep, the hospital's unorthodox, chaplain whose faith is as bold as his sense of humor. What begins as a reluctant partnership becomes something far more personal as Chris and Shep navigate her father's self-destruction, each other's guarded hearts, and the jagged path toward grace. Inspired by true events, Shep and the King of Hearts is a raw and redemptive contemporary romance about love that doesn't flinch in the face of failure. This story invites you into a journey of second chances, spiritual reckoning, and the unexpected ways love breaks through—when we finally stop running. For readers who crave romance wrapped in redemption and a love story that heals more than just the heart. Faith. Forgiveness. Falling in love. Begin the journey now. Description:Today, we're stepping into the candlelit, corseted world of Victorian England with New York Times bestselling author Madeline Martin—a master of emotionally rich, meticulously researched historical fiction. Madeline's novels (The Last Bookshop in London, The Librarian Spy, The Keeper of Hidden Books) have introduced millions of readers to hidden corners of history where ordinary people wield books as lifelines, rebellion, and hope. Her latest work and our December JHBC pick, The Secret Book Society, is no exception. Set in an era when women were warned that reading could “inflame the imagination,” The Secret Book Society follows Lady Duxbury—a thrice-widowed countess trailed by scandalous whispers—who covertly gathers a small circle of women for tea…and contraband literature. What begins as shared curiosity blooms into a daring underground society where women read the stories they've been forbidden, claim a power they've been denied, and build the kind of sisterhood that can spark a quiet revolution. In this conversation, we pull back the velvet curtain on: how real Victorian restrictions inspired her fictional rebellion the archival rabbit holes that uncovered surprising truths about women, reading, and resistance the power of “found family” in times of surveillance, judgment, and constraint why stories become sanctuaries when the world demands silence Thought-provoking Quotes: “Reading can really provide such lightness in dark times.” – Madeline Martin “Every book that I've written, I have been to the location where it is set. And I've been able to get that really wonderful firsthand experience of being there. I feel like it takes this black and white world and colors it in this really vivid, wonderful way that lets me accurately convey it onto the book for hopefully what makes for a very evocative read for the reader.” – Madeline Martin “If you read a book and it's so good you can't put it down, you read it over the course of a weekend, and you can viscerally recall every part of that story, from what the character drank and ate, to what they wore, to that snarky little one-liner that they gave the antagonist. But if you took six months to read that book, you might have a different experience. So for me, when I get to write that book in one month, it's like I'm living in their skin, and I'm living in their heads.” – Madeline Martin Resources Mentioned in This Episode: Outlander by Diana Gabaldon - https://amzn.to/4iv5e3C The Last Bookshop in London: A Novel of World War II by Madeline Martin - https://amzn.to/4pKU0uq For the Love: Fighting for Grace in a World of Impossible Standards by Jen Hatmaker – https://amzn.to/48AqikP A Time of Witches: A Novel by Madeline Martin – https://amzn.to/3MBpnJl The Forgotten Pages by Madeline Martin – coming 2027 Goodreads 2025 Reading Challenge – https://www.goodreads.com/readingchallenges?ref=rc_summerreading_25 The Hope Keeper: A Novel by Heather Webb –https://amzn.to/48uJkc2 The Lotus Shoes: A Novel by Jane Yang – https://amzn.to/447ANuy Guest's Links: Website - https://madelinemartin.com/ Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/madelinemmartin/ Twitter - https://x.com/MadelineMMartin Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/MadelineMartinAuthor Pinterest - https://www.instagram.com/madelinemmartin/ Substack - https://authormadelinemartin.substack.com/subscribe Connect with Jen!Jen's Website - https://jenhatmaker.com/ Jen's Instagram - https://instagram.com/jenhatmakerJen's Twitter - https://twitter.com/jenHatmaker/ Jen's Facebook - https://facebook.com/jenhatmakerJen's YouTube - https://www.youtube.com/user/JenHatmaker The For the Love Podcast is presented by Audacy.
