Today is Wednesday, April 2nd and Happy Birthday to Marvin Gaye ***BIRTHDAY – MARVIN GAYE*** I’m Keith Ippolito and here are the stories Cobb is talking about, presented by Times Journal Cobb Tables Proposed 24-Townhome Development Federal judge sides with Georgia in 'water wars' with Alabama Cobb PARKS Spring Arts Festival is April 26 All of this and more is coming up on the Marietta Daily Journal Podcast, and if you are looking for community news, we encourage you to listen and subscribe! BREAK: MONSTER JAM 2025_FINAL STORY 1: Cobb Tables Proposed 24-Townhome Development The Cobb County Planning Commission delayed a decision on a proposed 24-townhome development at 2318 Powder Springs Road until May 6, citing concerns over stormwater management, parking, and road design. The applicant, Fort & Cole Street, plans two-story, craftsman-style homes with garages and a homeowners association. Cobb DOT raised issues with driveway spacing and private alley design, while the fire department questioned emergency vehicle access. A Cobb Schools representative opposed the project due to potential enrollment impacts at Osborne High. The commission seeks further input from the stormwater division before proceeding. STORY 2: Federal judge sides with Georgia in 'water wars' with Alabama Georgia secured another victory in its "water wars" as a federal judge upheld the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' 2021 decision to allocate more water from Lake Allatoona to meet metro Atlanta and Bartow County's needs. Alabama had challenged the decision, claiming it over-allocated water to Georgia, but the court found negligible impacts on Alabama's water needs. This ruling brings clarity after decades of litigation. Georgia also won a similar case against Florida in 2021 regarding water use from the Chattahoochee and Flint rivers. Today is Tuesday, December 24th and Happy Birthday to Howard Hughes ***12.24.24 - BIRTHDAY – HOWARD HUGHES*** I’m Keith Ippolito and here are your top stories presented by KIA Mall of Georgia Norcross buys historic Woman's Club building for $450K Woman Accused of Stealing More Than $600K By Submitting Fake Invoices At Her Job State to lift ban on new irrigation wells All of this and more is coming up on the Gwinnett Daily Post podcast, and if you are looking for community news, we encourage you to listen daily and subscribe! Break 1: Kia MOG (07.14.22 KIA MOG) STORY 1: Norcross buys historic Woman's Club building for $450K The Georgia Trust for Historic Preservation and Norcross officials have agreed on the future of Gwinnett County's first public library building. The city will purchase the 103-year-old Norcross Woman's Club building for $450,000, ensuring its preservation within a historic district. This resolves a dispute that began when the city considered condemning the building. The Trust, which received the building as a donation, aimed to preserve its architectural features. The city plans to invest $230,000 in rehabilitation by 2025. The building, a Carnegie-style Greek Revival structure, will be overseen by the Norcross Historic Preservation Committee. STORY 2: Woman Accused Of Stealing More Than $600K By Submitting Fake Invoices At Her Job The Gwinnett County Police Department has issued warrants for Melissa Dowd, 58, of Monroe, for stealing over $656,000 from her employer, WideData Corporation. Dowd, now in Gwinnett County Jail, is charged with computer theft, forgery, and theft by taking. She allegedly submitted false invoices and altered checks to list herself as the payee, committing these acts over 190 times. Additionally, she doubled her salary by manipulating payroll software and altered her W-2 to evade taxes. The investigation continues, and tips can be reported to the police or Crime Stoppers for a potential cash reward. STORY 3: State to lift ban on new irrigation wells Georgia is lifting a decade-long moratorium on new irrigation wells in Southwest Georgia, effective April 1. Governor Brian Kemp announced that the Georgia Environmental Protection Division (EPD) will accept groundwater withdrawal permit applications, requiring drought-related measures to protect water supplies in the Lower Flint and Chattahoochee river basins. The moratorium, imposed in 2012 due to drought, was partially eased last year. Extensive research and improved water tracking technology have informed the decision to lift the ban. This move supports farmers recovering from Hurricane Helene and strengthens Georgia's water management efforts. We have opportunities for sponsors to get great engagement on these shows. Call 770.874.3200 for more info. We’ll be right back Break 2: Tom Wages (08.05.24 OBITS_FINAL) STORY 4: 4M expected to pass through Atlanta airport during Christmas/NYE holiday period If you are traveling this holiday season, be prepared for delays. Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport expects around 4 million passengers during the Christmas holiday period, with the busiest day on December 27, seeing over 327,000 travelers. Nationwide, TSA plans to screen 40 million passengers by January 2. Travelers are advised to check ATL.com for parking updates and monitor real-time wait times at the airport. TSA Administrator David Pekoske warns that a potential federal government shutdown could lead to longer security wait times. STORY 5: A white Christmas in Georgia? Snow chances in Atlanta next week? Will we have a white Christmas? The last "white Christmas" in Georgia was in 2010, with snowfall from 1-3 inches in metro Atlanta to 8 inches in the north Georgia mountains, marking the first measurable Christmas Day snow since 1881. This year, sub-freezing temperatures are expected in north Georgia leading up to Christmas, but dry conditions are likely to persist until Christmas Eve or Day, making a snowy holiday unlikely. Many Georgians hope for wintry weather, but a "white Christmas" remains a rare occurrence in the state. In a 6-3 decision by the justices, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that outdoor sleeping bans do not violate the Eighth Amendment. The decision essentially allows cities to make it illegal for unhoused people to sleep outdoors, even when shelter space is unavailable. Dr. Terence Lester, the founder and executive director of Love Beyond Walls, discusses how this ruling will affect those who are unhoused in the Atlanta area. Filmmaker Hal Jacobs and Chattahoochee Riverkeeper Jason Ulseth discuss their new documentary, “Saving the Chattahoochee.” It spotlights Sally Bethea, one of America's first female riverkeepers. The film focuses on her decades-long effort to maintain the health of the river. Plus, Editor Dan Whisenhunt discusses a big announcement: the new ownership of his digital media business, Decaturish.com, by Appen Media, a local and family-owned newspaper company. Whisenhunt is joined by Carl Appen, the director of content and development at Appen Media, to discuss what the arrangement means for the future of both of their news outlets. Lastly, Anthony Michael Kreis, an assistant professor of law at Georgia State University, gives an analysis of the U.S. Supreme Court ruling on the question of whether former presidents are immune from prosecution for official acts they take while in office. According to NPR, in a 6-3 decision, the court ruled that “a former president has absolute immunity for his core constitutional powers — and is entitled to a presumption of immunity for his official acts, but lacks immunity for unofficial acts.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Next up we swing over to Lake Eufala on the Chattahoochee river to talk with Steve “Graz” Graziano. Join us as Graz talks winter topwater bites, lipless crankbaits, alligators, and jig fishing; and stick around to the end to hear why anglers should pay extra attention to boating safety as the temperature starts to drop. Rounding off this week's show we talk with Andre Davis over on the Black Warrior and Cahaba Rivers in the central part of the state. Commercial : CU of GA – UMC 30 STORY 1: river In a tragic case, Breyanla Lachuan Cooper of Stone Mountain was convicted of murdering her 19-month-old son, Faheem, by leaving him in the Chattahoochee River. She pleaded guilty to malice murder, aggravated assault, and concealing the death. As a result, Cooper was sentenced to life in prison by Cobb Superior Court Judge Kellie Hill. The incident came to light when Faheem's lifeless body was found in the river on July 1, 2021, after a firefighter noticed something floating in the water. Cooper initially claimed her son was kidnapped, but surveillance footage and GPS data from her car disproved her story. It is a heart-wrenching case, leaving the family and community devastated...................……... Read more about this at mdjonline.com Story 2: banks During a school board work session, David Banks, a longtime Cobb school board member, expressed his desire to cut the school district's millage rate by 0.5 mills, which was more than the proposed reduction of 0.2 mills by Superintendent Chris Ragsdale. Banks considered the proposed reduction as the largest tax increase in Cobb County history and felt he could not support it. However, the chief financial officer clarified that a larger reduction would result in significant revenue loss, equivalent to cutting 1,100 teachers. The board eventually voted on the 0.2-mill reduction, and Ragsdale considered it necessary to attract and retain great teachers for quality education. Banks remained opposed, expressing concerns about the impact on minorities and some residents avoiding taxes through exemptions. Story 3: motel 6 The Marietta City Council approved a proposal to convert the Motel 6 on Delk Road into apartments. Developer 5th Street Capital Partners presented the conversion as an opportunity to improve public safety and provide affordable housing. The council initially voted in favor of the proposal but was vetoed by Mayor Steve Tumlin. After further discussion, Councilman Joseph Goldstein joined supporters to override the veto. The developer plans to add security measures such as one-year leases, background checks, and security cameras to reduce crime at the property. The decision was supported by those advocating for more affordable housing in the area. we'll be right back Break: ESOG - Dayco – Ingles 2 STORY 4: judge A federal judge ruled that the Cobb County School District cannot be held liable in a lawsuit filed by a group of parents and left-leaning groups, alleging racial gerrymandering in the new school board map. However, the judge denied the Cobb Board of Elections' request to dismiss the claim against them. Consequently, the Board of Elections is the only remaining defendant in the case. The lawsuit, filed by civil rights groups and parents, claimed that the map disenfranchised voters of color. The judge found the school district immune from liability, but the case against the Board of Elections will proceed. STORY 5: habitat Habitat for Humanity of NW Metro Atlanta and the Cobb Interfaith Habitat Coalition have begun construction on their 22nd annual Habitat house in Mableton. Faith groups, including various churches and Islamic centers, and corporate partners are participating in the build. The future homeowner, Vernita, has worked as a general manager at McDonald's for 21 years and is eager to have a place to call home. The Habitat program's affordable homeownership opportunity made this dream possible for her. The coalition's motto is "We Build to Coexist, We Coexist to Build," emphasizing unity and faith in action. Story 6: cunane Mount Paran Christian softball player Katie Cunane is set to travel to Cuba with an American travel ball team to compete in the Copi Amistad event in Havana. Commercial Slappey Story 1. Standards The Georgia Professional Standards Commission unanimously voted to remove the words "diversity," "equity," and "inclusion" from the state's educator preparation rules, despite opposition from students, educators, and parents. The University System of Georgia requested the removal to clarify expectations for educator preparation programs. Critics argue that this decision, similar to the divisive concept law, will harm teacher preparation and worsen the state's teacher shortage. They believe diversity is essential to effective teaching and that removing it from teacher education will discourage future educators. Despite receiving numerous emails opposing the change, the commission maintains that their intent is to meet the needs of all students. Critics argue that words reflect intent and removing these terms has consequences. The Cobb Galleria Specialty Shops, located inside the Cobb Galleria convention center in Georgia, USA, was never as successful as its developers had hoped. Even when the convention business took off, the mall failed to take advantage of this trend. Today, the mall is home to 20 remaining shops, which pay month-to-month leases that barely cover operating costs. Plans to redevelop the Galleria complex by razing the mall and building a hotel and restaurants have been around since the 1990s, and the project is now gaining traction thanks to a revenue-sharing agreement between the authority, the Cobb Board of Commissioners and Cobb's cities. The Trust for Public Land, a non-profit that builds parks, has purchased a nine-acre scrub-covered lot in Mableton Parkway, located across the Chattahoochee River from Fulton County Airport in Atlanta. The site is intended to serve as the first of 25 regional trailheads for the Chattahoochee Riverlands project, a massive undertaking to create a series of parks and trails connecting a 100-mile stretch of the Chattahoochee from Lake Lanier's Buford Dam to Newnan. The first portion of the trail in south Cobb will be a pilot project that showcases the potential of the full Riverlands project. The Georgia Tech baseball program announced on Thursday that they will retire former Yellow Jacket standout Mark Teixeira's Number 23. Teixeira, a former Atlanta Braves first baseman, will be honored in a pregame ceremony on May 20th before Georgia Tech's game against Virginia. His number will join only two other retired numbers in program history. During his time at Georgia Tech, Teixeira earned a long list of honors, including the 2000 Dick Howser Trophy, National Player of the Year, 2000 ACC Player of the Year, and 2000 consensus first-team All-American. He was also named to the All-ACC first team twice. Teixeira played a 14-year career in MLB, winning five Gold Gloves and three Silver Sluggers. He also won the 2009 World Series as a member of the New York Yankees. Teixeira was elected to the Georgia Tech Sports Hall of Fame in 2011 and returned to campus after retiring from professional baseball to complete his degree in business administration in 2022. Bridger Properties, the developers behind the proposed 135-unit residential building in Marietta downtown, are considering condominiums instead of apartments for the building. The developers held a community meeting to hear from residents, many of whom were concerned about the maintenance of rental apartments. The seven-story building would be built on a 1.25-acre site north of the Marietta Square Market food hall. The land is already zoned for a category that permits the building, and the developers are not seeking variances from the city. However, Mayor Steve “Thunder” Tumlin and some City Council members have said they do not want it to be built. Community reporter Matt Goldin catches up with John Bednarowski coming to us from the Masters, presented by Ingles. An Arizona resident named Michael Lopez completed the Georgia Bass Slam, catching seven different species of bass across Georgia. The Bass Slam recognizes anglers with knowledge and skill while also promoting conservation and management of black bass and their habitats. To qualify, fish must be caught legally on waters where permission is granted, within a calendar year, and basic information and photos must be provided. Successful Bass Slammers receive a certificate, passes to the Go Fish Education Center, stickers, and recognition on the Bass Slam webpage and social media. Additionally, Georgia has a Trophy Bass Angler Award program for largemouth bass catches of 10 pounds or greater. Atlanta-based Bridger Properties has outlined plans for a multimillion-dollar renovation of the land it owns in Marietta's downtown area. The plans include a public plaza at Marietta Station, a facelift for a dozen stores on Church Street, and a new seven-storey residential building north of Marietta Square Market food hall. The developer has also said it will lease its retail properties to small businesses and local operators, and it is seeking new restaurants and retail outlets for Church Street. However, residents raised concerns over the departure of previous tenants, the rental rates charged and the loss of parking spaces. #CobbCounty #Georgia #LocalNews - - - - - The Marietta Daily Journal Podcast is local news for Marietta, Kennesaw, Smyrna, and all of Cobb County. Today on Crime & Entertainment, we share the crazy tale of Andrew Thorton & The Cocaine Bear. Thorton grew up in the Kentucky area and after serving briefly in law enforcement, he quickly made the transition into an outlaw. Thorton, along with Bradley Bryant & others, eventually formed a crime syndicate called "The Company." They would smuggle everything from weapons to drugs from South America to the United States. Eventually when the heat came down and over 25 people were arrested, utter chaos ensued. A murder rampage began that included a federal judge and a Florida State Attorney with many others falling victim. Eventually, Thornton would meet his demise during a drug running operation where he would jump from his airplane with multiple weapons, a bullet proof vest, and a duffle bag with 75lb of cocaine strapped to him. This weight however was too heavy, which resulted in his parachute not opening and he subsequently plummeted to his death. However, before he jumped, he threw out multiple bags of cocaine that landed in the Chattahoochee area. Unbelievably, this cocaine was discovered and consumed by a black bear.
