The show returns to the science fiction films of the 1970's with author Randy Fox! This time out we tackle DAMNATION ALLEY (1877) and make a sad discovery – neither of us like the film. Generally, I don't enjoy podcasting about films I'm not enthusiastic about but we explain how this episode came to be. Word to the wise – communication is key! Anyway. We dig into the production of the film and go back to the source story from Roger Zelazny to compare page to screen. Spoiler alert – page wins. But we take note of the various films that seem directly inspired by Zelazny's tale and relate ways that this movie could have benefited from sticking closer to the story as written. We discuss the slashing of the budget and the commensurate drop in special effects quality. Neither Randy or I like one of the lead actors which is always a problem for entertainment value. Couple this with excellent character actors dying far too soon, as well as the female lead being given nothing to do and the printed version of this tale looks better all the time. No matter that the producers thought, a futuristic Convoy was not what the public wanted. If you like DAMNATION ALLEY, by all means, let us know why at thebloodypit@gmail.com – we are curious. Thank you for listening and we'll be back soon.

In this chapter we look at what was a bumper year for Hallowe'en - with 1993 delivering classics such Tim Burton's A Nightmare Before Christmas, Disney's Hocus Pocus, a film of Ray Bradbury's The Halloween Tree, and the first publication of Roger Zelazny's classic novel A Night in Lonesome October
Bill and Joel take a bunch of LSD and go to the Ren Faire. Or they read the first cycle in Roger Zelazny's The Chronicles of Amber. Same difference, really.
We wrap up our thoughts on A Night in the Lonesome October by Roger Zelazny. Tom lays down some very obscure hints about the next pick. And why we're glad Andy Weir got fired.

Winner of the Hugo Award—one of six Zelazny received over the course of his legendary career, as well as three Nebula Awards and numerous other honors—Lord of Light stands with Joe Haldeman's The Forever War and Frank Herbert's Dune as one of the seminal novels that changed the way readers looked at science fiction. The best sci-fi explores the possibilities of what our universe could look like in the future. Join Catherine and her returning guest Aleksei as they discuss one of these books that holds the genre to a high standard, Lord of Light by Roger Zelazny. They enter a world where people live for hundreds of years in many forms, heaven is real (if overly populated with gods of young love), and humans have begun to forget what Earth was like entirely.
In this episode, Langdon and Eden discuss the merits, oddities, and uses of mediocrity before covering a mediocre, but fun, book from an excellent author, Roger Zelazny. This week on the Vintage RPG podcast, we check out The Court of Ardor in Southern Middle-earth (1983), a sourcebook for MERP that predates MERP and significantly expands Tolkien's world. It mainly introduces a cabal of elves in the service of Morgoth who, well, they act a lot more like the royal family of Roger Zelazny's Amber Chronicles than anything in Tolkien. But it is still pretty cool! * * * Stu's book, Monsters, Aliens, and Holes in the Ground is for sale now! Buy it! Patreon? Discord? Cool RPG things to buy? Our first tale from interesting times could've happened in other times - there's nothing specific about that time it happened, except that everyone there was Generation X, and it was just at a point where the mystic allure of the Awakening was giving way to the freedom of the Unraveling. But don't want to spoil it for you, so just listen. Not referenced or mentioned or anything here, but there's a character description in Roger Zelazny's This Immortal that includes a situation very like this one. Okay, now that I've re-read the synopsis on Wikipedia, it has SEVERAL situations very like this one, but I'm specifically thinking of the title character remembering one time where a poet was reading his poetry....It's a classic story, check it out. (It's not at all clear what Turning that story happens in, and the poetry reading is some time in its past, but I can imagine that these sorts of events are very Third Turning.) A Kind of Magic is an unofficial soundtrack for Highlander. Most of the songs from the movie are on there, and most of the songs on the album are from the movie. (But the album does not include Theme from New York, New York.) One might note that that this happened the day after the Berlin Wall fell. Maybe I'll do another episode about that... Here's a video of the full show. This recording is from a few weeks later in the year. (No magic, this time.) We just called it The Queen Show. Yes, it also has Bohemian Rhapsody.
Host Catherine and her guest Rowan discuss Call Me Conrad, Roger Zelazny's first Hugo win. They talk about the endless Greek myth references, the strange blue aliens who have essentially turned Earth into a museum, and what to do with a book that seems more interested in side stories than any main plot. Join us for a discussion of if the book is worth a read.

Today's author wrote one of the best selling science fiction books of all time, Dune. Frank Herbert was born in Tacoma, Washington in 1920. His lied about his age to get the first of many newspaper jobs in 1939. Herbert loved photography, buying his first camera at the age of ten. In 1942, during World War II, he was a photographer in the U.S. Navy's Seabees. He served for six months but suffered a head injury and was given a medical discharge.Frank Herbert said he had been reading science fiction for about ten years, before he began writing sci-fi, and said some of his favorite authors were H. G. Wells, Robert A. Heinlein, Poul Anderson and Jack Vance. His first science fiction story Looking for Something, was published in the April 1952 issue of Startling Stories. He began researching Dune in 1959 and the novel was published six years later. But, did you know the world was first exposed to the Dune World in a December 1963 issue of Analog science fiction magazine. It was featured on the cover. That 1963 issue contained Part One of Thee Parts of Dune World.Dune was then rejected by almost twenty book publishers, and in his rejection letter one editor wrote, "I might be making the mistake of the decade, but…”Sterling Lanier of the Chilton Book Company, the company most often associated with automobile repair manuals, was exposed to Dune World in Analog and offered Herbert a $7,500 advance plus future royalties for the rights to publish Dune. Obviously Dune was a success, winning the Nebula Award for best novel in 1965 and sharing the Hugo Award in 1966 with Call Me Conrad by Roger Zelazny. However, Dune, was not an immediate bestseller, and following its publication he went back to writing for newspapers. He didn't become a full-time author until 1972.In addition to his numerous novels Herbert wrote about 30 short stories, six of them are in the public domain. Let's turn to page 89 in the April 1958 issue of Galaxy Science Fiction Magazine, for, Old Rambling House by Frank Herbert…Next on The Lost Sci-Fi Podcast, He walked alone in the dawn and the dusk, and no one knew his name. Our late book club episode for May about "Creatures of Light and Darkness" by Roger Zelazny. "Creatures of Light and Darkness" by Roger Zelazny is a science fiction/fantasy novel that blends elements of Egyptian mythology with a futuristic setting. AKA the origin of the sentiment that too many dicks spoil the soup. Did we love it? Was it readable? Was it's highly praised rich imagery (a man burns off his own dick with a red hot robot hand so...) and non linear narrative worth it? Did we find it though provoking or rage inducing? Could we find anything nice to say at all?I'll let you guess but you can and should just go ahead and listen to the episode to find out. Hey, remember Star Wars? The first one that came out in 1977 and surprised everyone, becoming a massive hit and changing Hollywood forever? Well, we're not reviewing Star Wars. No, we're reviewing the movie that 20th Century Fox was banking on being the hit of the year instead of Star Wars. It's called Damnation Alley! Very loosely based on a novel by Roger Zelazny, this tells the story of a bunch of people trying to survive in a post-apocalyptic wasteland. There's a cool car in it, a bunch of giant scorpions, and a teenage Jackie Earle Haley!Join our Patreon for TWO bonus episodes each month! https://www.patreon.com/oldiebutagoodiepodFollow the show!Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/oldiebutagoodiepod/Facebook: https://fb.me/oldiebutagoodiepodPodcast Platforms: https://linktr.ee/oldiebutagoodiepodGot feedback? This week on the Vintage RPG Podcast, we're talking about Roger Zelazny's 1971 novel Jack of Shadows. Gygax included the novel — a high-concept blend of fantasy and science fiction — in Appendix N, but it isn't one that gets talked about all that often. Perhaps because it is such an unrelentingly ugly book, featuring a protagonist who embraces his dark side and never lets go, to the sorrow of everyone around him, and even unto the end of the world as he knows it. This one is DARK. And yet, because it is Zelazny, still incredibly readable and entertaining. That dude could write. * * * Stu's book, Monsters, Aliens, and Holes in the Ground is for sale now! As Philip points out, if we had a nickel for every time we talked about a book where Buddha fights Jesus in a Sci-Fi setting, we'd have two nickels. Which isn't a lot, but it's weird that it happened twice, right? The subject this time is Lord of Light, by Roger Zelazny, and the subject is actually Hinduism more than those other religions, as far-future space colonists use technology to turn themselves into gods. Then Jack Kirby helps them free hostages from Iran, or something? Just listen to the episode, I swear it makes sense. (I am on drugs) Support us on Patreon and listen to the show a week early! Chris Christman is a retired, life long adventurer. He has always been curious by nature, and lived his life as such. Born in Panama on a military base, and raised in New Jersey, his interests in different cultures, types of people and their lifestyles, he explored by engulfing himself in photography and travel. Reading anything he could get his hands on also played a big part in shaping his unique view of the world. He soon found out that science fiction would prove to be his favorite place to explore by reading the stories of Robert A. Heinlein, Arthur C. Clarke, Andre Norton, Roger Zelazny and others. More recently, urban fantasy taking more of his reading attention, Jim Butcher, Orlando Sanchez, Steve McHugh soon became favorites. They all influenced him to finally write his own stories down and as a result we have the Mixed Magic Saga. Using an unique twist of magic and science to entertain the reader. He lives in Missouri with his wife a social worker, a dog and four cats.
Jared, Oriana and Ned discuss Ned's choice of topic: The Notion Club Papers. Written in 1945 during a creative pause in completing the final third of The Lord of the Rings, The Notion Club Papers found Tolkien on familiar ground, creating a set of purported notes from regular club meetings among a group of Oxford professors much like himself and his fellow members of the famed Inklings. While not advancing beyond a couple of drafts and far from complete, the papers tell first of a professor who, due to a discussion on how spacecraft would work in science fiction, avers he has himself been able to travel in dreams through the reaches of space and meet other minds before returning to earth. One initially skeptical member over time then tells of his own unusual dream experiences, building up to a sudden moment during a massive storm where he invokes the language and imagery of the downfall of Númenor, in much the same fashion as The Lost Road did nearly a decade prior; related manuscripts found Tolkien revisiting the Númenorean story in particular, as well as speaking in detail about his invented language for the society. How does the novel's complicated structure work creatively, if at all, and is there something there that could have been developed further in later drafts? What does it mean that Tolkien seemed most at ease exploring the possible sources of his own creativity in such a second-hand fashion, even if the means by which he did so ended up being incredibly insular? What were the contemporary sources and inspirations for this effort among his fellow Inklings and beyond, and are there any parallels he acknowledges or, perhaps notably, ignores? And who wouldn't want to talk over the evident problems of medieval life while getting a haircut from Norman Keeps?Show Notes.Jared's doodle. This is why it's important to check the insulation on your windows. And indeed the WGA strike did end soon after we recorded our episode. SAG strike still ongoing for the moment!More from the Lord of the Rings musical revival, and who knows where it will go…Amazon's plans for ads for Prime Video, great. Lovely. Couldn't agree with that more. Yup.News about the Tales Of The Shire game and we are very curious indeed!Yeah that whole Warren Beatty Dick Tracy thing. There are indeed skeletons in Stardew Valley. (The upcoming game Ned mentioned is Wytchwood.)The Notion Club Papers! We recommend at least a little caffeine before reading.Knowing a little about the Inklings will not hurt at all when it comes to the Notion Club Papers.Socratic dialogue can indeed be rollicking. Our episode on “A Secret Vice.”Thomas Pynchon is out there and is happy not to be recognized. That Hideous Strength concludes the Space Trilogy by taking a Charles Williams direction (though as Jared notes, not very successfully). If you haven't seen Inspector Morse just ask a relative who still watches PBS a lot. (Because they've likely been watching Endeavour.)Interstellar is trippy, man. (In a formal Nolany way, but still.)The Great Storm of 1987 as reported on UK TV.“The Call of Cthulhu” is probably Lovecraft's most well known story. And boy does it have problems too!C. S. Lewis's “The Dark Tower” is a weirdly fascinating fragment, while An Experiment With Time by J. W. Dunne was a reference point for both Lewis and Tolkien in these works. Ringu aka The Ring, which of course has nothing to do with a certain other ring. We think.Monty Python's Constitutional Peasants, one of their most perfect moments.David Lindsay's A Voyage to Arcturus Tolkien definitely liked. The Worm Ouroboros by E. R. Eddison, rather more mixed. (And relatedly our episode on Sir Gawain and the Green Knight.)The Grink! (RIP Twitter, culturally at least, but Bluesky is starting to gel more.)Per Ned's closing comment, Roger Zelazny's A Night In The Lonesome October has become a seasonal classic of sorts. We're getting back to our regular programming with a special request from one of our listeners! Following our episode on The Road, listener Jeff shared his recommendation for another post-apocalyptic movie. According to Jeff, “It's an old one, but it still checks out.” Released in 1977, the same year as Star Wars, and two years before Mad Max, this “road movie” see a small group of survivors of World War 3 attempt to drive across the desolate wasteland to where they hope more survivors are living, facing freakish mutated insects and other dangers along the way. Starring Jan-Michael Vincent, George Peppard, Paul Winfield, and very young Jackie Earle Haley, based on the novel by Roger Zelazny, and directed by George Smight, the movie was, to put it kindly, a flop, despite being released in the new “Sound 360” surround format. But it has earned a cult following in the years since, with Jeff among its devotees, thanks in part to the true star of the film: the wasteland-crawling armored RV called The Landmaster, designed by Dean Jeffries. As Jeff writes, “One of my favorite movies growing up - for the vehicle alone - was Damnation Alley. I'd love to hear Legends take on it.” And take it on we shall! Unions are all the rage this summer. It's looking like the busiest summer of labor action since 2000, with 323,000 workers already having gone on strike, according to the Denver Post. But it's not just grocery store clerks and Hollywood writers, the solidarity is spreading to nontraditional labor hotspots, like homeless shelters and The Mercury Cafe. With The Merc's employees set to vote on their union next week, host Bree Davies and producer Paul Karolyi are joined by returning fave Joshua Emerson to talk about the iconic Five Points restaurant and venue and it's role at the center of the latest labor fight. Joshua is hosting his comedy showcase “Colorado Native” at the Holiday Theater on Aug. 24. You can get tickets here. Paul talked about the amusement park Aurora could have had back in the late '70s, Roger Zelazny's classic sci-fi novel “Lord of Light,” and the Colorado Sun report on HOAs. Joshua mentioned secretive judges. Bree talked about Jason Perry, the DJ who was killed outside Dandy Dan's recently. In which the 3Ds are in a New York state of mind. They wax romantic about the end of humanity, and realize most sci-fi movies and fire-and-brimstone preachers have it wrong when they portray the Apocalypse. History has proven that most people will simply go about their business as usual. New York City proved it earlier this summer; as the thick haze of wildfires blanketed the Big Apple...nothing changed. New Yorkers put on masks and did their usual thing. How else do sci fi (and preachers) misjudge human resilience? Bend an ear and find out in this episode! Oh, lest we forget: the game for this episode is to describe a Star Trek episode in five words.
