Our Original Thinking Lecture series showcases some of the world-leading research from colleagues at Alliance MBS. This event is hosted by Michael Hodson, Professor of Cities, Innovation and Society at the Sustainable Consumption Institute (SCI), at the Innovation, Management and Policy (IMP) division, Alliance Manchester Business School. How are digital platforms being mobilised to re-imagine the future of cities, who is doing this, and why? Innovation with urban infrastructure and its social organisation has become a key strategic concern for policymakers and other stakeholders at an urban scale. As a response to a range of pressing contemporary and future challenges facing urban contexts, infrastructural innovation is frequently mobilised in visions of the future of the city that are produced by public authorities, business organisations and NGOs. Yet, visions of infrastructural innovation are not benign, technocratic representations of the future of cities but are media through which the struggle for the future of the city, and the role of infrastructural innovation in this, is played out. This requires critical thinking about the strategic centrality of urban infrastructure to how the future of the city is being re-imagined but also focusing on the politics of possibility in shaping urban infrastructure and the future city. In this event, Mike will construct an argument that provides the first step towards this end by addressing how digital platforms as a form of urban infrastructure are being mobilised in visions of the future of the city, the social interests shaping this, and what the implications of this are. The event is facilitated by Andrew McMeekin, Professor of Innovation in the Sustainable Consumption Institute.

This Arkansas Attorney quit his law career and became an International Travel Writer. Michael Hodson was a Lawyer in Fayetteville Arkansas for 10 years and at the age of 41, quit to circumnavigate the globe in 12 months...without getting on a plane. The 12 months turned into 16 months and then turned into 7 years. What is it like to be a full-time traveler with no home to come back to and all of your possessions in a backpack? How do you get into this? How do you pay for it? Michael started on his 12 month journey and began travel blogging when the 'travel blogging' industry was just beginning. He built a solid following on his website Go See Write and then migrated into the video industry by shooting promotional videos for hotels in exchange for a place to stay. Being a full-time travel blogger looks glamorous when you follow their social channels but Michael paints a much different picture. He explains exactly how he did it and the emotional struggle and the toll that constantly moving and the constant disruption takes on your emotional well-being. In the end, the emotional side of constantly traveling brought him off of the road and now he's taking what he learned in his travels to start a virtual reality video company. A massive ripcord from arguing with judges in Fayetteville to strapping on a backpack and hitting the road for 7 straight years. In this episode we cover... Walking out of a 10 year law career to get on a 24 hour bus trip to Mexico City. Crossing the globe in 12 months without getting on a plane. Packing WAY too much and spending WAY too much. Getting robbed in Costa Rica. Traveling cheap tips. Travel blogging reality. What professions work the best for a 'location independent' life. Michael has a great outlook about entrepreneurship and shares his advice to those who want to go create their own cool things.
Michael Hodson quit his career as a lawyer in Arkansas to seek fulfillment on the road. His goal? To circle the globe without using an airplane and write about it. He completed it in 16 months. Starting his blog to document his journey, he returned and took up the blog as a way to continue building a life of freewheeling travel. His travels include an overland trek from Cape Town to Cairo, from Lisbon to Saigon by train in a month, the Middle East, South America, across Europe... "A little bit of everywhere," in his words. Today, he aspires to find experiences through overland travel - which is travel without flying. Today's episode is a casual conversation between Michael and I about why we travel, how he manages his form of "slow travel" and what he gets out of it. We swap hitchhiking stories and compare notes about the Transsiberian and Michael explains to me how (and why!) he booked himself five times on a cargo ship to cross oceans. Check it out and let me know where you land in all of this in the comments. Words from an Explorer "I'm really addicted to the transportation. I feel really at ease when I'm doing a long train trip."
