Europa is the smallest of Jupiter's Galilean moons but it is the 6th largest moon in the solar system and only slightly smaller than Earth's moon. In space many planets and moons feature auroras, the most well known being the Northern Lights. These auroras are caused by electromagnetic changes from solar winds that bring charged particles into the atmosphere. The sound of Europa's auroras were recorded by NASA's Juno probe as electromagnetic data that was then interpreted as audio. Though not initially pleasant to listen to the sounds have been slightly stretched and altered to create a unique and peaceful ambience. Jupiter is the largest planet in our Solar System - a massive 318 times heavier than Earth - and it has been quite the 'hot spot' for news recently. NASA's Juno probe entered into orbit around Jupiter at the beginning of July, while in a new finding, it appears the famous 'Great Red Spot' is kicking up a bigger storm than first imagined. Telescope in hand, Claire Armstrong sought to catch a glimpse of the gas giant in the night sky, as explained by NASA's Jack Connerney and David Rothery from the Open University. Like this podcast? NASA's Juno spacecraft is orbiting the largest planet with the primary goal of understanding its internal structure. It will do this through a clever technique we at the Walkabout studios call "science". Check it out. It also comes in handy in just about every aspect of life. Join the astroquarks for the latest discoveries in our solar system on this episode of Walkabout the Galaxy.
NASA's Juno probe has reached Jupiter after a five year battle through our solar system and is orbiting the gas giant. But now it's completed this death-defying stunt, what now?
