I also offer my respects to the great teacher, Caitanya, who, 500 years ago, as a barefoot monk, traveled throughout India and introduced the process of bhakti yoga, going door to door and teaching people that it doesn't matter where you live, it doesn't matter what style you have, you don't have to change any of that. His point was to change the vibration in your life. And just as you may notice, if you have ever been to a movie—have you ever been to a movie? There's a few times, a long time ago. They have a soundscape. You can tell what the mood of the movie is by hearing the sound. I also found out, in research I'm doing for another book I'm writing, that so-called silent movies weren't silent. They were always accompanied either by a live pianist or organist, because we need sound to give us context. And there's a soundscape in our lives, and there's a saying that I like. If you don't like what you're being subjected to, anybody in any part of your life. Do you not like what you're being subjected to? Just say, yes, go along. Then change the subject. That's our free will to change the subject. And one of the ways that the great yogis have taught to change the subject is to change the sound vibration. Upgrade the sound, upgrade your life, because it upgrades your consciousness. I have been an active participant in the yoga industry since the early 2000s, and I have never really understood how brick and mortar yoga studios, especially locally owned ones without corporate backing, made it work.  I've been curious about it, and I have seen a few studios run incredibly well and last a long time, but we all know those are the outliers. These spaces are so important for us as teachers and students, and for the wider community as well, but they so often struggle to survive the impact of late stage capitalism.  And that was true even BEFORE the pandemic, when so many of our favorite local businesses closed down. There are not that many yoga studios that have been around for a long time, but we are VERY lucky today to hear from one of my old friends, Deb Flashenberg who has had a thriving locally owned yoga studio in New York City since 2002.

Private Coaching Spaces are OpenThis week I'm sitting down with Catherine Zack, a beloved friend of the podcast. She's been on numerous times before (I've linked those episodes below), and selfishly, these episodes always imbue me, personally, with a sense of relief and freedom. But I have a feeling it will do the same for you.For her 38th birthday, Catherine gave up ambition. No she hasn't stopped working. No, she hasn't tossed away all dreams for her yoga studio. No,  she still has hopes and dreams and aspirations. That's not what she means by ambition. She means living life from a place of shoulds and external approval, versus our own compass. If you find yourself in a space in life where you're....So eager to step off the hamster wheelDisenchanted with the idea you were sold that you can 'have it all' as a womanHungry for a relationship with work that gives you more freedom and spaceAre thinking bigger isn't always better...Then you will find so much solace, and probably a few personal epiphanies, inside this conversation.Catherine's Previous Episode on the Pod (Busting the myths of marriage)Catherine's Yoga Studio in the Hudson ValleyCatherine's Personal WebsiteCatherine's SubstackWork with me PrivatelyConnect on InstagramWebsitePodcast Production by James Jorge

Gap Year For Grown-Ups
Patty Ivey on Getting Breast Cancer at Age 70 and How It's Changing What She Can Give Back to the World

Gap Year For Grown-Ups

Today Debbie talks to Patty Ivey about life changes and opportunities opening up for her after being diagnosed with and treated for breast cancer last year. Inspiring doesn't really cover it as a way to describe Patty. Neither does [b]old, as in [B]OLD AGE. Patty and Debbie go back at least 15 years, when Debbie was a regular at Patty's Down Dog yoga studio in DC. It was always special when Patty, the owner, taught a class. Her classes were different. They offered all the benefits that practicing yoga offers beyond what happens on the mat; with Patty teaching, the class was mind-expanding. She made yoga open up new possibilities for how to live. So when Debbie saw Patty posting beautiful, bald photos of herself on her LinkedIn page, she immediately got in touch to find out how she was doing. As Patty explains it, she is using life principles from yoga, which include leaving room for what we don't know and focusing on something bigger than ourselves, as she looks ahead.  She acknowledges an identity shift that has come with cancer. Some older version of herself is no longer there, but she's okay with that. Like most women, Debbie is terrified of getting breast cancer, but with Patty as a guide (she's also a mentor and a life coach as well as being a serial entrepreneur), it seems there could be an upside. We hope you are as inspired by this conversation as Debbie was.  //////////Don't miss the Behind The Scenes  for every podcast episode in Debbie's [B]OLD AGE newsletter on Substack.////////// Mentioned in this episode or useful:Patty's website: https://thepattyivey.com/Patty on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/pattyiveyHer studio in DC: https://www.downdogyoga.com/Her yoga teacher Baron Baptiste: https://www.baptisteyoga.com/Connect with Debbie:debbieweil.com[B]OLD AGE podcast[B]OLD AGE newsletter on SubstackEmail: thebolderpodcast@gmail.comDebbie and Sam's blog: Gap Year After SixtyFacebook: @debbieweilInstagram: @debbieweilLinkedIn: linkedin.com/in/debbieweil Our Media Partners:CoGenerate (formerly Encore.org)MEA and with thanks to Chip ConleyNext For Me (former media partner and in memory of Jeff Tidwell) How to Support this podcast:Leave a review on Apple PodcastsSubscribe via Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, Stitcher or Spotify Credits:Host: Debbie WeilProducer: Far Out MediaMusic: Lakeside Path by Duck Lake
