The Small Business Association of Michigan’s Small Business Weekly Podcast
On today's program, Michael Rogers talks with Janice Milligan, President and Owner of Doggy Daycare and Spa -- selected as a Michigan 50 Company to Watch for 2026. The company operates two locations in the Greater Lansing area, offering daycare, boarding, and grooming services. Milliken attributes their success to a dedicated team and comprehensive training. "The team members are trained, and so they know dog behavior, they know what to look for," she says. "The dogs are always supervised when they're together. We're very particular about our requirements, so we don't take just any dogs. The dogs that we're seeing are dogs that we know are going to be successful in our environment, so we're not having a lot of behavior issues." The Small Business Association of Michigan is the only statewide and state-based association that focuses solely on serving the needs of Michigan's small business community. We have been successfully serving small businesses like yours in all 83 counties of Michigan since 1969. We're located in Lansing, just one block from the Capitol. Our mission is to help Michigan small businesses succeed by promoting entrepreneurship, leveraging buying power and engaging in political advocacy. When small businesses band together through the Small Business Association of Michigan, they achieve more than they could on their own. Our 32,000 members are as diverse as Michigan's economy. From accountants to appliance stores, manufacturers to medical, and restaurants to retailers, what unites the SBAM membership is the spirit of entrepreneurship…a spirit that drove you to start and continue to operate your own business because you believe you can do something better than anyone else is doing it! Eric Yung has spent nearly two decades at Polartec doing one thing exceptionally well — and that's exactly the point. As Managing Director and VP of Sales and Marketing at Polartec (a Milliken company), Eric pulls back the curtain on what it actually takes to build a premium ingredient brand over the long haul. The answer isn't growth at all costs. It's ruthless focus, selective partnerships, and the discipline to walk away from opportunities that don't fit. In this episode, we dig into how Polartec invented modern synthetic fleece alongside Patagonia, why they deliberately stepped back from a commoditizing outdoor market to bet on cycling, and what it really means to "win with winners."Eric also breaks down the PFAS transition, the three pillars of Polartec's product universe — insulation, base layer, and weather protection — and why cycling brands are now among the most innovation-hungry partners they work with.If you're building a brand in cycling and wondering how to differentiate in a world getting more competitive by the day, Eric's philosophy is a blueprint worth studying.Read the latest 'The Business of Cycling' BlogSign up for 'The Business of Cycling' Newsletter
In 1974, the Supreme Court issued a momentous decision: In the case of Milliken v. Bradley, the justices brought a halt to school desegregation across the North, and to the civil rights movement's struggle for a truly equal education for all. How did this come about, and why? In The Containment: Detroit, the Supreme Court, and the Battle for Racial Justice in the North (FSG Press, 2025), the esteemed legal scholar Michelle Adams tells the epic story of the struggle to integrate Detroit schools—and what happened when it collided with Nixon-appointed justices committed to a judicial counterrevolution. Adams chronicles the devoted activists who tried to uplift Detroit's students amid the upheavals of riots, Black power, and white flight—and how their efforts led to federal judge Stephen Roth's landmark order to achieve racial balance by tearing down the walls separating the city and its suburbs. The “metropolitan remedy” could have remade the landscape of racial justice. Instead, the Supreme Court ruled that the suburbs could not be a part of the effort to integrate—and thus upheld the inequalities that remain in place today. Adams tells this story via compelling portraits of a city under stress and of key figures—including Detroit's first Black mayor, Coleman Young, and Justices Marshall, Rehnquist, and Powell. The result is a legal and historical drama that exposes the roots of today's backlash against affirmative action and other efforts to fulfill the country's promise. Guest: Michelle Adams is the Henry M. Butzel Professor of Law at the University of Michigan. The former codirector of the Floersheimer Center for Constitutional Democracy at the Benjamin N. Professor Michelle Adams describes the struggles to integrate Detroit's highly segregated neighborhoods and schools in the 1960s, a federal judge's ruling to alleviate that segregation by bussing students between the predominately Black schools in Detroit and predominantly white schools in the suburbs, and the Supreme Court's subsequent 1974 Milliken v. Bradley decision that acknowledged the … Continue reading The Containment: Detroit, the Supreme Court, and the Battle for Racial Justice in the North

This is The Energy to Heal, your resource for all things Splankna — the faith-based inner healing modality that helps you achieve emotional freedom. In this episode, Laura Milliken and Mason Milliken explore the profound and life-changing power of surrender. This is a part 2 to their prior episode covering surrender. This concept of letting God truly be in charge has been absolutely life-changing for this couple. Together, they discuss how surrendering to Christ alone leads to true freedom, relief, and authenticity, releasing the burden of control and striving. Through personal stories and biblical insights, Laura and Mason reveal that surrender is not about weakness — it's about aligning with God's design and trusting His plan completely. Listeners will learn how facing pain, letting go, and trusting God through uncertainty can unlock peace and restoration. This episode offers practical steps for walking out surrender daily and finding your original design in Christ. ✨ Key Takeaways: Surrendering brings instant relief from overwhelm. Trusting in Christ alone leads to authenticity and peace. True freedom exists in the realm of Christ alone. Letting go of control opens the door to personal and spiritual growth. Facing pain is necessary for healing and transformation. Surrender is an ongoing journey, not a one-time act. Mistakes are opportunities for grace and growth in faith. Surrendering restores your original God-given design and purpose. The fulcrum of life is found in surrender. Surrender helps you recognize Christ in every part of your life. “Schools are the very center of communities—close a school and in three years you'll see what happens to the neighborhood.” From the first laugh about “getting lost in my own neighborhood” to hard truths about policy, Arlyssa Heard of 482Forward sits with Khary Frazier and maps a Detroit story stretching from Delray pulpits to Dexter & Fenkell porches and into Lansing's halls of power. She honors Southern roots (“Atlanta was becoming the Black mecca before our eyes”), a preacher father (“I'm a daddy's girl”), and a childhood of full blocks where “every house was occupied,” then names the turn: vacancies, blight, and the weaponization of policy—Milliken v. Bradley, white flight, and emergency management that left her son with “an entire year without an English teacher.” Heard walks us through the rise of African-centered schooling—Paul Robeson, Malcolm X, Aisha Shule—and the organizing lineage of Helen Moore, Dr. Jawanza Kunjufu, and Queen Mother JoAnn Watson, reminding us that “Detroit families have always exercised choice,” but too often against rigged funding: “If you can't shut something down, starve it—don't fund it.” She distinguishes being anti–starvation from anti–charter, exposes post–Count Day push-outs, and puts receipts on how 482Forward helped “get DPSCD its board back” while blocking a New Orleans–style takeover. 1976 - Lewiston, Maine. In the early hours of a November morning in 1976, Dorothy “Dotty” Milliken left her home to do some late-night laundry in Lewiston, Maine. She never made it back. A local paperboy found her body just before dawn, outside Beal's Laundromat. She had been beaten to death in what police called a frenzied attack. Tonia was just seven when her mother was killed—a traumatic loss that reshaped the course of her family's future. In the years since, she's worked to understand what happened. Now, a new book revisits the case, pulling together decades of theories, suspects, new interviews, and questions to form a possible picture of that night. But police are still missing a critical piece of the puzzle: the person that knows who killed Dorothy Milliken. If you have any information on the murder of Dorothy Milliken, please contact the Maine State Police Major Crimes Unit South at (207)624-7076 x9. The family is offering a $10k reward for information that leads to the arrest and conviction of the person(s) responsible for this crime. 1976 - Lewiston, Maine. On a cold November morning in 1976, 27-year-old Dorothy Milliken—Dotty to those who loved her—was found bludgeoned to death outside Beal's Laundromat in Lewiston, ME. A paperboy made the grim discovery around 4:30 a.m. She'd gone out to do some late-night laundry, and while the city still slept, someone ended her life. Her killer has never been caught. As the years passed, Dorothy's case went cold. But long before her name joined Maine's growing list of unsolved murders, Dorothy Rancourt Milliken was living a quiet, honest life. She was a veteran. A survivor. A mother. This is her story. This is part 1 of 2. Part 2 will be released on June 17th. If you have any information on the murder of Dorothy Milliken, please contact the Maine State Police Major Crimes Unit South at (207)624-7076 x9.
