Today I am joined by Carla from our coven to talk about death, grief, poisonous plants, her craft and a whole lot more in this episode! This is part one as the interview was so long my software couldn't cope with the duration so I have released as a two parter. Carla Valentine is a qualified Senior Mortuary Technician, and is currently the human remains conservator at Barts Pathology Museum in London. Her career caring for the dead has spanned over 20 years. She is a writer and broadcaster, featuring on TV shows such as The Bone Detectives, Fatberg Autopsy and Ancient Unexplained Files, and has a podcast called Mortem on BBC Sounds. Her first book, Past Mortems, documents her career carrying out autopsies for a decade, and the follow up, The Language of Bones - out October 1st 2026 - is a deeper exploration of death practices and the human condition. She also penned Murder Isn't Easy: The Forensics of Agatha Christie, and her next book, Planted Evidence - all about gardens, graves and poisonous plants - will be published in 2028. Carla's career informs her craft and she incorporates death meditation (mortality salience) into her practice as well as the use of body fluids and bones. She runs a small goth gardening business called Morticulture and is obsessed with the dark side of horticulture and its history. On this week's Talkhouse Podcast we've got a couple of old friends who are both multi-hyphenates: film directors, actors, writers, musicians, and perhaps most importantly, opinionated rabble-rousers who've spent decades pushing at the edges of culture—especially sexual politics—and gleefully widening its scope. It's John Cameron Mitchell and Sook-Yin Lee. Mitchell is perhaps best known for co-writing and starring in Hedwig and the Angry Inch, the late-'90s stage musical that became a cult-classic movie. It was the beginning of a career that has championed queerness and otherness, pushing those things into a mainstream that has sometimes been welcoming, but most times not so much. He followed Hedwig with Shortbus, whose frank depictions of sexuality were probably a little too intense for wider audiences. Mitchell has also done really interesting work as an actor in other people's projects, including playing Tiger King Joe Exotic in a miniseries not too long ago. As you'll hear in this chat, he's working on a project about Alan Ginsberg in 1968, a time that should be more distant than it feels like at the moment. Mitchell is heading out on a Hedwig anniversary tour that will include screenings of the film plus live performance and conversation; check out hedwig25.com for info. The other half of today's chat, Sook-Yin Lee, met Mitchell way back when, as you'll hear, when she auditioned for him—sort of. She had roles in both Hedwig and Shortbus, but has also lived other lives as a TV presenter in Canada and a prolific film director. For the past couple of years she's taken her latest film, Paying For It, straight to audiences along with her friend Chester Brown, whose graphic novel is the film's basis. It's a comedy about a couple that opens their relationship, and one of them decides to experiment by paying for sex. I love kobold adventures because they always lie to you. They start with the same sales pitch every time. Oh, it's kobolds. Funny little lizard guys. Maybe some traps. Couple slings. Tiny crown. Cute little dungeon crawl. And then six sessions later you're dealing with ancient dwarven grudges, undead labor theology, emotional damage, cursed relics, fantasy Vecna, and one kobold who should have died three times but keeps showing up because sheer pettiness has apparently made him immortal. Kobolds are never the adventure. Kobolds are what the adventure uses to lure you into the basement. Show Notes This week we did a full postmortem on Crown of the Kobold King and dug into one of Pathfinder's earliest adventures revisited for Second Edition. What starts as a straightforward kobold dungeon crawl quickly turns into a surprisingly layered story full of ancient dwarven vaults, undead corruption, cursed relics, and one increasingly unfortunate kobold king. We broke down the setting of Darkmoon Vale and Falcon's Hollow, the lumber town run by a spectacularly terrible administrator, before diving into the dungeon itself and the history behind Droskar's Crucible. The adventure piles old Torag worshippers, fallen dwarven cultists, Tar-Baphon lore, and necromantic experiments on top of each other until the kobolds become almost incidental to the chaos. The campaign also delivered some incredible table moments. A near total party kill was saved by remembering a forgotten +1 bonus at the last possible second. Sir Thanah evolved from heal bot NPC into one of the emotional anchors of the campaign. Cap Mech somehow transformed from random kobold encounter into recurring rival, revenant menace, and eventual ally. Meanwhile Kirby continued solving problems the traditional way by casting Brick. We also spent time talking encounter design, what worked, what absolutely did not, and why some dungeon sections deserved immediate deletion. Looking at you, anti gravity hallway. By the end, the adventure became less about stopping the Kobold King and more about the people trapped inside the dungeon's history and deciding who deserved saving. Key Takeaways Crown of the Kobold King works well as an introductory Pathfinder 2 adventure and offers more narrative depth than its classic dungeon crawl structure initially suggests. Darkmoon Vale embraces classic fantasy adventure design with starting town, wilderness, and dungeon exploration. The dungeon layers multiple factions together including kobolds, fallen dwarf cultists, undead servants, and Tar-Baphon corruption. Small Pathfinder bonuses matter. A forgotten +1 attack bonus completely prevented a TPK. Sir Thanah evolved from support NPC into one of the campaign's strongest emotional story threads. Cap Mech became an accidental standout character through repeated appearances and escalating rivalry. The adventure benefits from adding consequences and time pressure rather than treating events as static. Some encounters are excellent while others feel dated and benefit from modification or removal. Commanders continue proving they are extremely effective force multipliers.
