TCW Podcast Episode 249 - New World Computing   We look at the rise and fall of New World Computing through the career of Jon Van Caneghem. Coming from the era of the lone programmer as the industry shifted toward larger development houses, Jon built Might and Magic into one of the most influential RPG franchises of its time. We trace the evolution of the series from its early focus on quest driven gameplay, early auto mapping, and the introduction of features like quest logs and reactive character portraits. Along the way, New World Computing briefly experimented with board games, returning to video games with King's Bounty, a title that would later be reimagined as Heroes of Might and Magic after a marketing push to leverage the stronger Might and Magic name. We examine the company's shifting publishing relationships, struggles with distribution, and eventual acquisition by the 3DO Company. While Heroes of Might and Magic III brought major success, pressure from 3DO led to rushed releases, excessive expansions, and declining quality across both franchises. As Might and Magic moved into 3D and real time combat, development resources became increasingly strained. Hello Witches This episode has been one of my favourites to research and was something I discovered last month whilst working on the Angels theme for my Patreon, The Hedge & Hollow. In this episode I explore The Book of Raziel where language, timing, planets, angels and intention were understood as part of a single living system. We look at the idea of words as vibration, sacred names and why the Hebrew letters were treated as energetic forces rather than symbols. I talk about how this tradition connects to the 72 Names of God, spell timing, planetary days and the correspondences modern witches still work with, often without realising how old these systems truly are (I know I had no idea!). We also touch on the lineage that flows from Raziel through Adam, Enoch, Noah and Solomon and how this current eventually shaped medieval grimoires, Renaissance magic and later systems like the Golden Dawn. Santa as a snarky saboteur doesn't mentor or challenge the brothers; he detonates obstacles instead of nudging growth. That choice undercuts the holiday grammar that makes films like Home Alone and Elf endure—clear rules, genuine stakes, and heart over spectacle. We talk lip sync problems, songs that feel stapled on, and a Home Alone musical gag that somehow works despite a convoluted setup. Then we trace the character arcs that should have mattered: Kevin's desire for a real vocal moment, Nick's control streak, Joe's playboy reputation versus a surprisingly sweet connection with Lucy.It's not all coal. We call out the lines that hit, the chemistry that clicks, and the cleaner version hiding in plain sight: fewer explosions, more constraints, and music that actually drives character and story. A better structure would give each brother a problem to own and solve, with Santa as a wry guide rather than a wrecking ball. From there, we descend into the symbolism of the sickle — a tool of harvest, severing and fate. We explore its mythic lineage through Morana, Mokosh, Cronus, Saturn, the Grim Reaper and the Druidic priesthood. You will hear about the magical uses of sickles across Europe, their protective and banishing powers and how you might weave this ancient blade into your own witchcraft practice today. We close with a look at Mothers' Night (Modranicht) — the Anglo-Saxon celebration honouring ancestral mothers, protective spirits and the deep feminine that presides over midwinter.
