This podcast is sustained by sales of our debut book, Meow: A Novel (For Cats). In this episode, we celebrate Fight Club author Chuck Palahniuk's devotion to animal welfare; namely, his support of The Pixie Project, a Portland-based animal rescue facing an unprecedented inflow of “pandemic remorse” animals. Enthusiastically adopted during COVID lockdowns, rescue pets are now being resheltered in droves, enabling their owners to shed their tired dog-parent personae and ease into a more cosmopolitan, travel-selfie-based lifestyle. For more on how you can help Chuck help The Pixie Project, visit his Substack. As added incentive, we've included a reading of Palahniuk's Phoenix, a 2015 short story attesting to the apocalyptic power of a feline scorned, and a warning to fair-weather pet adopters. This reading is presented in cat language. The human-language original can be found here. MEOW is the first and only literary podcast for your cat, conceived and presented in its native language. Today’s episode is with Ann Saks from FETCH Eyewear. You may know Ann from her designer tile business with retail and wholesale operations globally. But today, we are talking about Ann’s newest business, Fetch Eyewear, and her passion to alleviate the suffering of animals. FETCH eyewear was born from Ann’s desire to find affordable and stylish reading glasses. Her journey into the eyewear business began when she lost an expensive pair of reading glasses just days after buying them. Finding very few options to replace them, Ann saw an opportunity, and true to her entrepreneurial spirit, she took it. Early on in creating FETCH, Ann decided to endow a family foundation to benefit animal rescue and to use FETCH to create an ongoing source of revenue for that foundation. Fetch donates 100% of the net proceeds from your purchase to support animal welfare through rescue, veterinary care, low-cost spay and neuter, and education in partnership with The Pixie Project. Today, Ann and I are talking about her many years of working as an entrepreneur, about her passion for animals, about how she is innovating at FETCH to continue the work of her foundation and about the importance of following your passion to make change. Episode Highlights Ann’s Passion for Animals How losing a pair of glasses was the beginning of FETCH eyewear Founding of the Pixie Project and FETCH Eyewear The circular relationship between people and pets What contributed to Ann’s professional success The evolution of FETCH The impact of the forest fires on animals Work of The Pixie Project to help animals Resources you can use to rescue animals How to make an impact in your community About Ann Saks Fetch founder Ann Sacks began the journey with the Fetch concept when she lost an expensive pair of reading glasses just days after buying them. Not one to be disappointed twice, she set out to find a better way. On this journey she decided that she could design glasses for optical use as well as suns, sun readers, and prescription suns and deliver them at a fair price while supporting animal rescue through The Pixie Project. Ann Sacks's incredible entrepreneurial journey began with a visit to a local Portland dress shop when she was a social worker. The patterns inspired her to start a new kind of tile company, which was later acquired by Kohler. Now working on her third business, Ann's latest company Fetch Eyewear is focused on giving back. Fetch is part of a very small group of businesses identified by the Paul Newman Foundation as "hundred percenters." This group donates 100% of profits to nonprofits- in Fetch's case, they donate all their profits to the Pixie Project, a local animal rescue organization and shelter, and other animal welfare organizations.
Episode 5: Fetch Eyewear's Chris Hoffman Fetch Eyewear is not only a fantastic eyeglass company using all vegan materials. They also exist with the sole function of funding Pixie Project, a Portland-based animal rescue and adoption nonprofit.
