Vanuit haar kantoor – met uitzicht op het beeld van Anton de Kom – deelt ze hoe Wij slaven van Suriname haar diepgaand heeft gevormd. Niet alleen als lezer en als mens, maar ook in haar dagelijkse werk als bestuurder.

“We kunnen allemaal mede-menselijk zijn.” Aan het woord is Tanja Jadnanansing, stadsdeelvoorzitter van Amsterdam Zuidoost. In haar werkkamer hangt een grote foto van Anton de Kom. Door het raam kijkt ze uit op zijn standbeeld. Het is geen toeval. In de podcast Meesterwerk van Jan-Jaap Hubeek vertelt ze hoe het boek Wij slaven van Suriname haar raakt en inspireert in haar werk – en hoe het boek ook vandaag een spiegel is voor onderwijs, opvoeding en samenleving. De eerste ontmoeting Op haar zeventiende leest Tanja voor het eerst over Anton de Kom. Ze groeit op in Paramaribo, Suriname, in een huis vol boeken. Haar vader, oud-notaris en liefhebber van literatuur, geeft haar de opdracht om Wij slaven van Suriname te lezen. Ze is dan vooral geïnteresseerd in de grote Latijns-Amerikaanse verhalen van Gabriel García Márquez. Toch luistert ze naar haar vader – en het boek maakt diepe indruk. “Wat mij raakte, was zijn oprechte verlangen om het beter te maken voor mensen. Hij ging voorbij kleur, klasse en afkomst. Hij vroeg steeds: wat bindt ons?” Die vraag – wat bindt ons – blijft in haar werken en denken doorspelen. Ze voelt zich verwant met de houding van Anton de Kom: scherp op onrecht, maar altijd gericht op verbinding. Die houding is voelbaar in alles wat ze vertelt. “Je hoeft niet kumbaya de hele dag elkaar te omhelzen,” zegt ze. “Maar als je een hoger doel hebt, kun je elkaar wel vinden.” De spiegel van Anton de Kom Het standbeeld van Anton de Kom, buiten haar raam, is een herkenningspunt in de wijk. Maar de meningen over het beeld zijn verdeeld. Sommigen zien liever de gestileerde versie van de schrijver – in pak, met hoed – dan de vrijgemaakte slaaf die het beeld verbeeldt. Voor Tanja is juist die veelheid aan interpretaties krachtig. Want, zegt ze: “Anton de Kom is een spiegel. Voor iedereen. En hoe jij kijkt, bepaalt wat je ziet.” In het boek waardeert ze de veelheid aan perspectieven en de subtiele manier waarop Anton de Kom de lezer aan het denken zet. “Hij schrijft vlijmscherp, maar pas later besef je wat hij heeft gezegd,” vertelt ze. “Dat vind ik knap. Ik wil ook zo zijn: je gedrag kunnen bevragen, maar je als mens heel laten.” Pedagogiek van liefde én wet Die gedachte brengt Tanja naar de kinderen van haar stadsdeel. In haar werk ontwikkelde ze een leiderschapsprogramma voor leerlingen van groep 8, gebaseerd op ‘love and law': liefdevolle aandacht én duidelijke kaders. In dat programma speelt een spiegel een centrale rol. Letterlijk. “Ik neem een spiegel met een glimlach mee de klas in en vraag de kinderen om zichzelf een compliment te geven. En dan beginnen ze te huilen. Omdat ze niets moois over zichzelf kunnen zeggen.” Dat raakt haar. Het laat zien hoe diep het gebrek aan erkenning kan zitten. En hoe belangrijk het is om kinderen te leren zichzelf te zien – met liefde. Niet als uitzondering, maar als norm. In de Zuidoost Academie, een pedagogische broedplaats waar ouders, leerkrachten en pedagogen samenwerken, wordt actief gewerkt aan die erkenning. “Hoe zorgen we ervoor dat elk kind een liefdevolle goede morgen krijgt?” Dat is de vraag die daar leeft. Verbonden verhalen Tijdens de opname schuift ook Pixie aan, een middelbare scholier die met Tanja meeloopt als stagiaire. Ze kent Anton de Kom niet uit haar schoolboeken, maar van haar vader. Haar ervaring raakt aan een groter punt: hoe zichtbaar is deze geschiedenis in ons onderwijs? “Dit is ook ónze geschiedenis. Niet alleen die van mij, maar van iedereen in de klas.” zegt Pixie. Tanja knikt. Ze wil dat het boek niet alleen gelezen wordt, maar beleefd. In het onderwijs, op straat, aan de keukentafel. “Geschiedenis wordt pas relevant als we het betrekken op het hier en nu. Susan Demeter is a Canadian born scholar, author, artist, and witch. The themes of her writing, research, art, and spirituality incorporate her lifelong interest in exceptional human experiences, UFOs, nature, social history, mysteries, and cosmic magic . Susan has conducted scholarly research on behalf of the Defense Studies Department of the Canadian Armed Forces College in Toronto, Canada on the topic of UFOs, and for the The Koestler Parapsychology Unit at the University of Edinburgh, in Scotland regarding poltergeist activity. Susan's writing, and research have been featured in a number of publications, and she is a contributing essayist to Robbie Graham's groundbreaking UFOs: Reframing the Debate. Susan's essay explores the subject of UFOs through the lens of parapsychology. Susan has actively investigated spook-lights in both Canada and her adopted home Italy, including in field work as an independent boots-on-the-ground UFO researcher. Over the last two decades her approach to the UFO subject has evolved from the nuts and bolts to more exotic and right brained thinking. Susan's first book Cosmic Witch was published in both English and Italian in August 2020. Susan has conducted a series of experiments based on and inspired by the work of the late mathematician, Dr A.R.G Owen and psychotherapist Dr. Joel Whitton popularly known as “The Philip Experiments” which will be the focus of her second book Cosmic Witch Vol. II Conjuring UFOs: UFOs, Social PSI, and Magic which will be available in late 2021 or early 2022. Susan lives in the Apennine Mountains near Bologna, Italy, with her husband, astrophysicist and electronic musician Massimo Teodorani, and their two cats Pixie and Merry. Her home studio faces a mountain peak that was in ancient times considered to be a holy place by both Pagans and early Christians.
