While working long hours as a consultant, Kate Flynn realized how very few convenient and healthy food choices existed. Having worked in the consumed packaged goods space, she saw there was a gap in the market, and in a true This or Something Better moment, she decided to do something about it. The result was Sun & Swell Foods. Founded by Kate and her husband, Sun & Swell is the first food company in the US that offers a wide variety of healthy foods in 100% compostable, plastic-free packaging. Kate believes that as a company, it is not only its responsibility to create healthier, more convenient food choices, but also to be a business that takes action to be better for people and the planet. As a Certified B Corporation, they pay attention to all aspects of their business from ingredient sourcing, and employment practices to environmental sustainability. Kate is a passionate entrepreneur with a mission to be better and do better in all aspects of her business and life. About Kate Kate Flynn, CEO & Co-Founder of Sun & Swell, has an MBA from Harvard, a BA from UC Santa Barbara, and a background in management consulting. She lives in Santa Barbara, CA with her husband and co-founder, Bryan, and her two children. Several years ago, she set out to build a new kind of packaged food company – one that is better for both people and the planet. Sun & Swell uses only healthy, organic, whole foods that are free from harmful ingredients and chemical additives, and is a pioneer in the packaged food industry when it comes to using compostable packaging. Kate has met her fair share of challenges along the road to transitioning her company to fully compostable packaging but remains focused on her goal of disrupting the food industry and pioneering a circular food system. In 2019, just before Diana Kapp released her first book, Girls Who Run The World, Forbes released their “America's Most Innovative Leaders” List. The list contained 99 men and just 1 woman. Upon seeing this, Diana wrote a letter to the editor, with a simple message, “we cannot see a list like this again”. Through her work as a journalist and author, Diana is changing this dialogue to be sure that female innovators and changemakers are both recognized and celebrated. Diana's latest book called Girls Who Green the World celebrates 34 inspiring women who are out to save the planet. In sharing their stories, Diana hopes to inspire and empower us all to take action, not only by making better individual choices but also by becoming involved in advocacy to make the policy changes that are so necessary. I have no doubt that this interview will inspire and empower you to be a changemaker. When my daughter was just 6 years old, I first picked up the book How To Raise An Adult. I devoured it. I earmarked pages. I told every parent I knew to read this book. Today, I am thrilled to have the author, Julie Lythcott-Haims as my guest. Julie is a writer, speaker, teacher, mentor, and activist, Her mission has always been to be of service to others, and through her books, Julie is helping us to raise and be adults. Let's face it, adulting is hard, and Julie believes our job as parents is to prepare our kids to be adults, to function without us, essentially to put ourselves out of a job. Her newest book, Your Turn, How to Be an Adult, was just released in paperback and is a must-read for all parents and young adults on the topic of adulting. In this conversation, Julie and I are talking about helicopter parenting, the influence of social media on children, how college admissions are impacting our children and so, so much more. About Julie Julie Lythcott-Haims believes in humans and is deeply interested in what gets in our way. Her work encompasses writing, speaking, teaching, mentoring, and activism. She is the New York Times bestselling author of How to Raise an Adult which gave rise to a popular TED Talk. Her second book is the critically-acclaimed and award-winning prose poetry memoir Real American, which illustrates her experience as a Black and biracial person in white spaces. Her third book, Your Turn: How to Be an Adult, has been called a “groundbreakingly frank” guide to adulthood. Julie holds degrees from Stanford, Harvard Law, and California College of the Arts. She currently serves on the boards of Common Sense Media, Black Women's Health Imperative, Narrative Magazine, and on the Board of Trustees at California College of the Arts. She serves on the advisory boards of LeanIn.Org, Parents magazine, and Baldwin For the Arts. She lives in the San Francisco Bay Area with her partner of over thirty years, their itinerant young adults, and her mother. Last year, an average of more than 3.98 million workers quit their jobs each month. In fact 2021 holds the highest average on record and has become known as “The Great Resignation.” While there are many factors that influence this exodus, one of the biggest reasons people are leaving their jobs is because they want to reclaim their lives and have a greater work-life balance. The pandemic has served as a tipping point, as a This or Something Better moment… It has caused us to pause, reflect, and ask ourselves. "What do I want? What makes me truly happy? As you know if you're a regular here on the podcast or if follow me on social media, I have spent many years swapping out products to reduce my exposure to environmental toxins. We know that these chemicals are around us, but it's difficult to know if they really are inside of us and how they might be impacting our health. While I think I am doing all the right things, I have always been curious to know what chemicals were still making their way into my body. Today's guest is Dr. Jenna Hua, the founder of Million Marker, a health-tech startup that empowers people to detox environmental toxins out of their lives through mail-in test kits, lifestyle audits, product recommendations, and counseling. When I learned about Million Marker and the work that Jenna is doing to help make these invisible chemicals visible, I knew I had to share. In preparation for this episode, I completed the Million Marker Lifestyle Audit and urine analysis to test for 13 hormone-disrupting chemicals including parabens, bisphenols, and phthalates. Today we are going to walk through my step-by-step experience going through the audit and test kit and we're going to talk about the results. This episode will educate and empower you to do what this podcast is all about, know better and do better. About Jenna Jenna's extensive experience as an academic and health advocate led to her founding Million Marker in 2019, shortly after completing a Postdoctoral Fellowship with Stanford University's School of Medicine. Throughout her career in academia, Jenna has researched and published numerous studies that largely focused on citizens' science, general health, and the impact of food consumption on a person's well-being. In one of her most recent publications, Jenna used machine learning to identify people based on food consumed in order to offer healthier food options. She also published another report that studied the arsenic exposure and risks of eating rice among adolescents in Kunming, China. Jenna has been a Project Manager for UNC's Carolina Population Center, a Graduate Instructor and Research Assistant at UC Berkeley, and a Project Manager at UCLA's Center for Population Research. She was also a US Fulbright Fellow at the Institute of International Education in Kunming, China. Jenna holds a BS in Nutrition and an MPH and PhD in Environmental Health Sciences from UC Berkeley. Over the past 14 years, Sadie Lincoln has grown Barre3 from one exercise studio to over 170 locations throughout the world. While fitness has always been at the core of Sadie's work, her vision for Barre3 has always been about creating a place where all people feel welcome to move and connect with their bodies as a part of a safe and empowering community. In this conversation, Sadie and I are talking about her journey and evolution as a leader and how she balances her professional responsibilities with those of being a mother. I love how Sadie is so open to sharing the detours she has taken along the way and how, in those moments of inflection, she was able to find her way back through self-discovery and guided introspection. Sadie is a thoughtful and passionate leader and human. She not only lives her life as a teacher but also as a student. There is no question that children's learning has been significantly impacted by the pandemic. While all children have likely suffered, students from lower-income, English as second language families and students with learning differences have suffered the most. Naomi Runkel and Kate Ristow are two passionate educators committed to minimizing the equity gap, the difference in academic outcomes between advantaged and disadvantaged groups. In 2020, Kate and Naomi co-founded The Space Idaho, a nonprofit organization dedicated to closing the equity gap and creating opportunities in education by providing access to high-quality academic support and college counseling for students grade 6-12. This organization is close to my heart as I have been a board member for over a year and currently serve as the Co-Board President. As a parent who has spent many hours and dollars helping my own child achieve academic equity, I believe so strongly in the work of this organization and the passion that Kate and Naomi have for helping all students find success. About Kate Kate has over ten years of teaching experience at both the high school (Sun Valley Community School) and college (The College of Southern Idaho, The University of Montana) levels. Most recently she has worked as a private tutor and a freelance writer. Her local nonprofit experience includes positions at The Community Library and Swiftsure Ranch. Kate has a Master's in writing and uses her skills in writing and storytelling to craft grant proposals. Sustainability is one of the biggest challenges facing the footwear industry. Shoes can contain up to forty different types of material, and once in the landfill, the rubber foams, plastics, and adhesives are likely to take hundreds of years, if not forever to decompose. Today's guest, Noah Swartz, is a fourth-generation bootmaker and the co-founder of Erem, a company with the goal of making performance footwear that is 100% biocircular. Biocurcular means that their desert boot uses only materials with proven paths back to nature and they provide each Erem product a seamless and responsible next life. Erem was born out of Noah's personal love for the desert, a conviction that outdoor gear can be made to higher environmental standards, and a belief that a company can positively and forever impact people, place, and Planet. Together with his father Jeff, Noah is innovating in product design, materials, and supply chain and reimagining what the life of a product looks like in order for it to leave a smaller footprint on our planet. About Noah Noah Swartz founded Erem because he couldn't find gear built for the desert landscapes that he loves. A fourth-generation bootmaker who believes in business's capacity and responsibility to solve social and environmental challenges, Noah brings to Erem an insistence that it is possible to create products that deliver world-class desert performance and that positively impact the world. Before founding Erem, Noah worked for iconic and disruptive brands including Beyond Meat, Modern Meadow, and Superpedestrian, and as an investment analyst at Gratitude Railroad. Noah grew up in the outdoor industry through The Timberland Company, which was founded, owned, and operated by his family until its sale to the VF Corporation in 2011. Noah completed three semesters at Harvard Business School before pursuing Erem full-time. He has a bachelor's degree in English literature from Columbia University. He and his wife, Raquel, love traveling, particularly to places where they can hike in the desert and go surfing in the same day. I started this podcast with the intention of sharing stories of hope. Today's guest Regina Ellis is not just a story of hope, but she is a true champion for it. In 1995, after her five-year-old daughter Alexandra died of cancer, Regina founded The Children's Cancer Association with the goal of making the world a little better for the thousands of kids just like her daughter whose childhoods are stolen by a diagnosis of illness, accident, or injury. In the past 25+ years, CCA has helped hundreds of thousands of children find their Joy—one song, one friendship, one breath of ocean air at a time. Regina believes that joy fuels innovation, fosters creativity, and has the ability to truly change lives and her goal through CCA is to do all that she can to give, get and share joy. About Regina Regina Ellis and her family founded CCA in 1995 after her five-year-old daughter Alexandra died of cancer. Along with other parents, pioneers, and dreamers she set out to create something extraordinary: an organization with a new vision for what pediatric cancer support services might look like. Everyday we are exposed to chemicals in our environment, our food, and our personal products. These chemicals can have a significant impact on our health, and while most of us don't necessarily see and feel their impact, it's there. Today's guest, Allison Evans, knows all too well the impact of these toxins. In high school, Allison was diagnosed with PCOS. In college, she developed severe back pain that was so debilitating she lost motor control of her body. She relied on painkillers, muscle relaxers, sleeping pills, and antidepressants just to get through the day. Despite seeing countless doctors, she had lost all hope of getting better. It wasn't until she spent the summer living with her aunt Marilee, eliminating toxins from life, that Allison was able to go off all of her medications, to reverse her PCOS and slowly begin to heal her body. That summer not only changed Allison's health, but it was also the starting point of her company, Branch Basics. Her story truly shows how tossing the toxins can make a profound impact on your health and your life. About Allison Allison has dedicated herself to helping others reap the benefits of clean living. She, along with her husband and two daughters (soon to be three), left Houston for the country life as she heals from a recent mold exposure and diagnosis of chronic Lyme disease. Having grown up in the whitest city in America, Jelani knew first hand that talking about racism is difficult and that most parents don't know how to do it. Since then, Jelani has built an entire media company around having difficult, and necessary conversations with children. A Kids Company About, that's the name of Jelani's company, has published over 50 books ranging from topics like Divorce, Voting, Cancer, Empathy, and Being Non-Binary. They recently expanded beyond books and have created a kids podcast network and a streaming platform for kids ages 10-15 to explore different Careers, Life Skills, and Big Ideas. Holly was in the prime of her career as a writer, blogger and social media expert for the highly followed Nantucket blACKbook, a platform, she created and built. She was the “it girl”. Everyone looked to her for the places to eat and shop and for all the hottest tips on Nantucket. Holly had all this power, but she realized that in the constant grind of advocating for others, she had lost herself. She had a toxic relationship with herself and a toxic relationship with social media and her phone. In a true “This or Something Better” moment, Holly decided to change the course of her life. She committed first to helping herself, and then she created a new foundation for her business in which she could also help others. About Holly Holly Ruth Finigan is a writer, Realtor and meditation advocate. In 2020, after a decade of experience in brand building and social media, Holly shifted her business to real estate while creating workshops and women's circles around divine feminine empowerment, healing the relationship with mother, and chakra clearing breathwork. Holly's intention is to help people slow down and reconnect to their innernet. Her first book "The One You Want To Find Is You" will be released in January of 2022. Kara Frazier was only 26 years old when she was diagnosed with stage 3 breast cancer. To encourage her to keep fighting, her friend's mom gave her a pair of mini pink boxing gloves. Those gloves reminded Kara that she was strong and beautiful. Three years later, Kara passed those gloves on to another woman fighting her battle with cancer, and that was the beginning of Fighting Pretty! The mission of Fighting Pretty is to remind every woman how strong and beautiful she is, especially if she's battling cancer. At the heart of Fighting Pretty's work is the “Pretty Package”, a care package containing a scarf, a lipstick, words of inspiration, and most importantly, a pair of mini pink boxing gloves. Since 2013, Fighting Pretty has sent over 10,000 pretty packages to women battling cancer. Kara and her team's work has lifted so many women during their darkest times by providing hope, support, encouragement, and something pretty. About Kara Fighting Pretty founder, Kara (Skaflestad) Frazier had just mourned the death of her Mema, who passed away after a long battle with breast cancer. Kara was in the shower when she performed her first self-breast exam and found a suspicious lump in her armpit area. In December of 2008, at just 26 years old, she went to her doctor and was told she was “too young to worry.” Kara pushed for a closer examination, only to find out that she did, in fact, have stage 3 breast cancer, which is considered to be an advanced and invasive stage of the disease. Kara faced a double mastectomy, eight rounds of chemotherapy, four weeks of radiation, fertility treatments, a year of Herceptin treatments. This was followed by hormone therapy that would last for a total of 10 years. Kara realized she wanted to go through this ordeal by “Fighting Pretty”—with a smile on her face, lipstick on her lips, and strength in her heart. Since becoming a 501 c(3) non-profit organization in 2013, Fighting Pretty moved from Kara's apartment in New York City to a headquarters in Portland, Oregon, with two part-time employees. In just a few years, Fighting Pretty has impacted over 10,000 women battling all types of cancer in 50 U.S. states and 16 countries globally. Plus, Fighting Pretty has received over $1 million worth of product donations from top cosmetic brands to send to women battling cancer. Kara works full time as the Marketing Manager at the OHSU Knight Cancer Institute and devotes her life to helping cancer patients through their fight. Kara now lives healthy and happily in Oregon with husband Ben, her new step-daughter Aubrey and dogs Archie and Zulu. Recently my daughter and I became a part of a mother-daughter book club. Our first book was an amazing middle-grade novel called Starfish. Starfish is both a heartbreaking and heartwarming story about a young girl named Ellie who, ever since she wore a whale swimsuit and made a big splash at her fifth birthday party, has been bullied about her weight. At our first book club meeting, we had the incredible fortune of having a zoom call with the author of Starfish, Lisa Fipps, and after talking with her, I knew she would be a fantastic guest for the podcast. Starfish is based on experiences that Lisa had as a child, and she wrote this book because it is what she wished she had when she was a fat kid trying to cope with bullying. Lisa never told anyone what she was going through. She never reached out for help with the emotions: sadness, anger, shame and she never stood up for herself. In a world where bullying is all too common, Starfish carries an incredible message that truly has the power to teach people, both young and old, about self-acceptance, compassion, and kindness to all. About Lisa Lisa Fipps is a graduate of Ball State University, award-winning former journalist, current director of marketing for a public library (where she won the Sara Laughlin marketing award), and an author of middle-grade books. Starfish is her debut novel. She's working on her next novel and several others. She currently lives in Indiana and lived in Texas. Today I am joined by Liz Kunz and Allie Riley from Girls on The Run. For 25 years, Girls on The Run has been empowering young girls to be joyful, healthy and confident using a fun, experience-based curriculum which creatively uses running as the method of learning. Sport specialization at a young age has made sports competitive and exclusive so much so that by the age of 14, girls are dropping out at twice the rate of boys. As a result, girls are missing out on the character building and life skills gained from participation in sport. The Girls on the Run program serves girls between the ages of 8-12, right at that critical point when their confidence is plummeting and their need for positive self talk, empathy, confidence and belief in self is so incredibly important. Through their 10 week program led by volunteer coaches, Girls on The Run is helping young girls to make the important connection between their physical and emotional health when they truly need it the most. About Elizabeth Kunz Chief Executive Officer As a lifetime advocate for girls' and women's issues, Liz has always encouraged others to recognize the power they have to create and transform their own lives and the world at large. Liz spent the first decade of her professional life in corporate America before transitioning to the nonprofit sector in 1996. It was while working at the YMCA that she first learned about Girls on the Run. Its mission – inspiring girls to be joyful, healthy and confident – profoundly resonated with Liz, and she started volunteering for the organization in 2002. She joined the staff as Chief Operating Officer in 2006 and has served as CEO since 2008. Liz has presided over an incredible period of organizational growth and brings significant expertise to Girls on the Run in setting strategic direction and creating an inclusive culture of empowerment, gratitude and joyful purpose. Liz enjoys singing and dancing – particularly to alt-rock music – and if she won the lottery, she would buy land to rescue as many animals as possible. About Allison Riley, Ph.D., MSW Senior Vice President, Programming and Evaluation With more than 10 years of experience designing, implementing and evaluating physical activity-based positive youth development programs, Allie oversees the development and delivery of all programming and training at Girls on the Run to ensure maximum impact. Allie earned her Ph.D. in social work with a specialization in positive youth development in social settings from Ohio State University. The single biggest thing each person can do to reduce carbon emissions is to reduce the amount of meat and dairy they consume. Though food alone can't stop climate change, the data is clear: we can't save the earth without changing our eating habits. Through The Planetarian Life, Maggy Keet is on a mission to empower people to take daily action on climate change through the food choices you make. The Planetarian Life makes it easy for everyone, from committed vegan to curious omnivore, to cook nourishing meals that are simple, sustainable, and delicious. For anyone looking to make healthier food choices for you and the planet, this episode will help you to see that it's really not as hard as you might think it is, that you don't have to be defined by terms like vegetarian and vegan and that even small daily choices can help to make a big impact. About Maggy Maggy Keet is an avid home cook, and nearly ten years ago she started her journey to what she used to call “vagueanisn” (vaguely vegan). Over the last decade, Maggy's reasons for eating mostly plant-based have evolved. It began with personal health and well-being, but as the impact of big ag farming and meat production has become unsettlingly clear, she realized that this way of living and eating was imperative for the planet. That's when “Planetarian” was born: a diet that's good for you, and good for the planet. Fear is something we have all experienced in our lives, an elevated heart rate, tears, sweaty palms, a heightened sense of awareness, but most of us have no idea what it's like to live with constant fear. Today's guest, Dr. Alisha Moreland-Capuia, believes that chronic fear is trauma and that there is a relationship between fear and trauma and fear and racism. Like COVID-19, Racism is very much a pandemic. Dr. Moreland-Capuia believes the same systemic action we have taken to address the pandemic can also be used to address systemic racism. She believes that we cannot just be allies in the fight against racism, we must be accomplices and today she is helping us all better understand what we can do individually, with your families and within our communities to be a part of the solution. About Dr. Moreland-Capuia Alisha Moreland-Capuia, MD, is a community psychiatrist who works at the intersection of trauma, addiction, and mental health. Her core mission in life is to do good, serve others, and reduce human suffering. At McLean, Dr. Moreland-Capuia is the director of Trauma-Informed Treatment, Consultation, and Outreach for the Division of Depression and Anxiety Disorders and the associate medical director at the Hill Center for Women. Through her research, Dr. Moreland-Capuia explores how systems recognize, manage, and move away from trauma. Drawing on her expertise in global health, trauma, addiction, and system development and change, Dr. Moreland-Capuia's research seeks to reduce unnecessary human suffering. She also hopes to contribute to an increased understanding of the impact of trauma on brain development and the overall risk for mental illness and how trauma shows up in systems. Dr. Moreland-Capuia's work builds on her experience training organizations, educators, government officials, and others in trauma-informed organizational change. This training explains the impact of trauma on individuals, populations, and systems. It also instructs organizations on ways they can change to best serve those who have been affected by trauma. Her approach is presented in her book, “Training for Change: Transforming Systems to be Trauma-Informed, Culturally Responsive, and Neuroscientifically Focused.”

Confidence. It's a big word, and it's something that a lot of people lack, especially young girls. Somewhere between the ages of 11 and 14, girls go from believing they can be anything and do anything to struggling with self-doubt, insecurity, and self-criticism. When Jilyne Jarvis reflected on her career as an NCAA and US Ski team athlete, she wished that she had more female mentors to encourage, guide, support and inspire her to have confidence. It was then in coaching young girls that Jilyne saw the true need for confidence-building and mentorship for girls in sports, so she decided to do something about it. The result, ZGirls, a national program that supports the mental development of girls ages 11-16 by equipping them with the tools and perspective they need to be confident, centered, and courageous. Regardless of whether or not you are a woman or a girl, the content of this episode is so important. Bodegas are the lifelines of New York City. They are community spaces and grocery stores. They often serve as a primary food source, and they are accessible to all. It's a fact that plant-based eating is healthier for you and the planet, yet access to healthy, sustainable, plant-based food is limited, if not impossible for many people. Nil Zacharias is doing something to change that. Nil saw bodegas as an opportunity to make plant-based eating easier and more accessible. The result, Plantega, a community-powered food system that not only creates greater access and exposure to plant-based foods, but also creates an additional revenue stream for the bodega owners. Coral reefs cover less than 0.1% of the Earth's surface, yet are estimated to support greater than 25% of marine biodiversity. Due to both human influences and global climatic changes, the structure and function of reef ecosystems are being altered. My guest, Brian Zgliczynski is a PhD marine biologist at Scripps Institute of Oceanography and a coordinator of the 100 Island Challenge. Brian and his team study coral reefs around the world in order to understand how reefs are structured, how they change over time, and how they can be managed and protected in the face of global change Before this interview I knew very little about coral reefs but thanks to Brian my eyes have been opened to why it is so crucial that we protect and preserve these most vital underwater ecosystems. About Brian Brian is a marine ecologist with interests in coral reef ecosystems and fisheries ecology. His research is motivated by a desire to understand how human activities and biophysical forces influence the structure and function of coral reef communities. Brian completed his Ph.D., at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography (2015) where he examined the effects of fisheries exploitation and oceanographic productivity on reef fish assemblages from the central Pacific. Never have the stakes been higher. We are facing an environmental crisis,... climate change, soil degradation, plastic pollution and loss of biodiversity. While business is often at the root of these problems, it can also be a part of the solution. Today I am talking with Richard Yelland and Jeremy Black, producers of the documentary, Seeding Change. Richard, a highly accomplished filmmaker and Jeremy, a co-founder of Sambazon, set out to tell the story of Sambazon and their journey over the last 20 years as an organic, fair-trade Acai company. Along the way, they realized there was a bigger story to tell, that of how triple bottom line businesses like Sambazon, are making a positive impact in the world. Today we're talking about all that lead up to the film Seeding Change and, of course, the film itself and its mission to educate consumers on how we can all help save the world one purchase at a time. About Richard Yelland Richard Yelland is an Emmy® Award nominated director and award-winning filmmaker. Powerful visuals and strong performances are a trademark of his projects for Nike, HISTORY, Surfrider Foundation, Sambazon & Outside Television. “Richard is a fantastic filmmaker,” said Oscar® nominee Morgan Spurlock. Richard's documentary film "Floating: The Nathan Gocke Story", was ‘Emerging Documentary' winner at the 2011 Cannes Film Festival. His next film, 12 Miles North: The Nick Gabaldon Story, presented by Nike, tells the story of the first-documented African American surfer and is “Unlike any surf film you've ever seen,” according to ESPN. 12 Miles North was a 2014 Webby Award winner and inspired Santa Monica's annual Nick Gabaldon Day. "Sine Qua Non: The Psychology of Big Wave Surfing with Greg Long", Richard's following effort, was an official selection at the Maui Film Festival and winner at the 2014 BLUE Ocean Film Festival. His latest feature, "The Long Way Back" documents the addiction that nearly killed Todd ‘Z Man' Zalkins after the overdose of his longtime friend and Sublime front man, Bradley Nowell. A Best Documentary winner at The Phoenix Film Festival, The "Long Way Back" received exclusive coverage in Rolling Stone and global distribution from The Orchard (SONY). Richard received his Emmy nomination for “Pool,” a PSA he wrote and directed for the Life Rolls On Foundation featuring wheelchair "pool skater" Darwin Holmes. About Jeremy Black Jeremy Black is a co-founder of Sambazon Acai. Taking the leap from a successful career as a financial planner, Jeremy joined brother Ryan Black (CEO) and friend Ed Nichols in early 2000 to introduce açaí to the U.S.market. In addition to helping create global awareness and demand for an unknown fruit, the team pioneered a sustainable business model in the Amazon to import organic, fair trade superfoods. Jeremy was a key player in Sambazon's rapid growth from startup to a $100+ Million dollar global brand. From meager beginnings of one product at a handful of juice bars around Southern California, Jeremy spearheaded the development of the brand, the products and the marketing for a full portfolio of products in frozen, juice, energy and supplement categories that are now sold in health food stores, juice bars and conventional grocery stores across the globe. Over the past 17 years, Jeremy helped the Sambazon team create an entirely new category in the natural foods category and a business that creates positive socio-economic and environmental change. As an avid surfer, yogi and snowboarder, Sambazon has become a way of life for Jeremy, providing organic energy for worldwide travels and active pursuits. Is there a birthday cake from your childhood that stands out in your memory? For me, it was the cake I had with a barbie and the cake skirt around her. Mine was pink and my twin sister's was purple. As a parent, I can confirm that birthdays are a huge part of a child's life, yet sadly there are hundreds of thousands of children whose birthdays go uncelebrated each year. Jaime Lehman was shocked and saddened when she learned that her friend had never had a birthday cake, and in that moment the idea of For Goodness Cakes was born. For Goodness cakes is a network of volunteers who bake and deliver birthday and graduation cakes to at risk and disadvantaged youth all across the country. Their mission is to celebrate these youth and give them a much needed pause and escape from the increasing pressures of their situation. Since January of 2016, For Goodness Cakes has brought joy and celebration to the lives of over 5000 children through their cakes. About Jaime Jaime is the Founder and Executive Director of For Goodness Cakes. We live in a world where we are bombarded with fad diets and food recommendations that, quite frankly, lack the science to back them up. Every diet claims to be the “best” and the healthiest, and it's impossible as consumers not to be overwhelmed and confused. Today's guest, Simon Hill, is a master at breaking down that confusion. Simon is a nutritionist, physiotherapist and the host of the top rated Podcast, Plant Proof. On the show he interviews doctors, athletes, climate change experts and other people who are all united by a shared passion for a plant-based lifestyle. What I appreciate about Simon is his commitment to sharing evidence based nutrition advice that is easily digestible to anyone, science background or not. In his new book, The Proof is in The Plants, Simon clears up the confusion around what we should be eating by providing unbiased, agenda-free scientific data. Most importantly, he shares the practical steps we can take to make better food choices for our health and the health of the planet. About Simon Simon Hill is a Physiotherapist and Nutritionist who is passionate about making nutritional information simple and accessible so that people can make informed decisions about the food they feed themselves and their family. In 2008, Simon completed a Bachelor of Physiotherapy and immediately began working as a Sports Physiotherapist in Melbourne both at a leading private practice and with professional AFL & VFL footballers. Over the years, however, Simon became increasingly curious about the role nutrition played in nourishing the body and preventing disease. By using his research skills developed during his honours degree, Simon dove deep into the available literature on nutrition & disease and soon became fascinated by the vast evidence out there that proved that simple lifestyle changes could help people prevent and sometimes even reverse many of the leading chronic diseases that plague the western world today. Concerned with the fact that this information was not reaching people but was instead getting lost amidst the myriad of marketing ploys pushed by industries who were more interested in profits than the health and general well-being of the public, Simon shifted gears in his career undertaking a Plant-Based Nutrition Certificate and a Masters in Nutrition. During this time, he set up plantproof.com and began hosting world-renowned doctors and public figures, such as Neurologist's Dean & Ayesha Sherzai, MD, Dr Will Bulsiewicz, MD, Dr David Katz, MD, Environmental Researcher Nicholas Carter, Climate Scientist Dr Jonathon Foley and Ultra-Athlete Rich Roll on the Plant Proof podcast. Over the course of the past decade Simon's mission has become clearer and clearer. Most of the time nutrition is spoken about in isolation from other major world issues, despite an enormous degree of interconnectedness. Just as our food system is a human health issue it is also a human and animal rights issue. Just as climate change is a planetary health issue, it is a human rights issue. Through the Plant Proof channels, Simon's hope is that more of us will work together to creating a more equitable, beautiful and peaceful world. Something we are proud of today, and something future generations continue to enjoy. And this starts with becoming more connected, more informed, more mindful and more conscious. Many of us have found ourselves at a place that feels like rock bottom, a place where we feel beaten down and broken and ready to throw in the towel. In 2017, at the very top of her sport, Hillary Allen was competing in Norway at the Tromso Sky running race when she fell 150 feet off an exposed mountain side, breaking her ribs, both wrists and feet, suffering a concussion and too many other bumps and bruises to count. In that moment, HIllary went from being at the top of her sport as a competitive runner to her literal and figurative rock bottom. In her new book, Out and Back: A Runner's Story of Survival Against All Odds, Hillary is sharing her journey to finding strength, healing and hope during her recovery from that near-fatal accident. Her story is an inspiration to anyone who has been at rock bottom and has worked to rebuild their life and find the something better. About Hillary Hillary's career as an endurance athlete has not been straightforward. Through injury, setbacks and unexpected challenges, Hillary's had to re-think what she considers impossible. Early in her career, Hillary earned the nickname “Hillygoat” when she proved her ability to run fast on steep, technical mountain terrain – a style of running known as Skyrunning. Since then, she has raced all over the world, racking up wins and course records, establishing herself as one of the best mountain ultra runners in the world. In 2017 she had a life threatening accident, where she fell 150 feet off of a ridge-line during a Skyrace in Tromsø, Norway. She was told she would never run again. After several years of rehab and recovery, Hillary made a full recovery and returned to elite level racing, racing some of her longest and most challenging events post-accident. She maintains the belief that ‘your best athletic days are ahead of you, if you're willing to work hard for what you love. Hillary also studies and teaches science, using her masters degree in neuroscience and physiology and structural biology. She is also a trail running coach, and a gravel cyclist. Maybe it's just me, but does anyone else feel like manners and common courtesy have been thrown to the wolves? I mean literally, people behave like wolves. In this past year I've witnessed the worst of people..rude, inconsiderate, selfish and sometimes just plain despicable. I truly believe the world is a better place when all people show respect, kindness and consideration, and there is no better person to dig into this topic than Lizzie Post. Lizzie is the great-great-granddaughter of Emily Post and a co-president of the Emily Post Institute. She is also the co-host of the Awesome Etiquette podcast. I grew up with Emily's Post's book of Etiquette sitting on a table in our living room and while my mom never made me read the book cover to cover, the contents were communicated and good manners were non-negotiable. Lizzie and I are talking about modern manners and the ways in which we can handle ourselves with consideration, respect, and honesty. About Lizzie Lizzie is the great-great-granddaughter of Emily Post, and author of Higher Etiquette, and co-author of Emily Post's Etiquette 19th edition as well as Emily Post's Wedding Etiquette 6th edition, and The Etiquette Advantage in Business 3rd edition. She is a co-president of the Emily Post Institute as well as a co-host of the Awesome Etiquette podcast (now in its fifth year), a weekly Q&A show that explores the topic of etiquette through the lens of consideration, respect, and honesty. Lizzie does speaking engagements across the country sharing advice about lifestyle and wedding etiquette. She has worked as a spokesperson for brands including Bank of America, American Express Platinum, AirBnB, and Marshalls. Her most recent book, “Let’s Ask Marion”, breaks down what you need to know about the politics of food, nutrition, and health. Marion advocates that we must understand, confront, and counter the political forces that created these problems in order to end them. This episode will open your eyes to the impact of food politics on our communities and families, our health, and our environment. About Marion Marion Nestle is Paulette Goddard Professor of Nutrition, Food Studies, and Public Health, Emerita, at New York University, in the department she chaired from 1988-2003 and from which she retired in September 2017. When I started this podcast I made a wish list of guests, and today I couldn’t be more excited to bring a wish to life and have Lindsay Dahl on the show. You may know Lindsay from her role at Beautycounter as the SVP of Social Mission. In this very big role, she oversees safety, sustainability, quality, advocacy and giving. Lindsay has a long and impressive history working as a consumer safety advocate that includes the passage of more than a dozen health protective laws at the state and federal levels and the nation's first ban on BPA from baby bottles. Lindsay’s work as an advocate and educator reaches far beyond her day job. Through her website Lindsaydahl.com and her Instagram account, Lindsay shares science-based consumer safety guides, safer beauty products and how to find safer products for your home. Lindsay is one of my go-to-resources for all things health and safety, and I am beyond thrilled to have her as a guest. About Lindsay Lindsay Dahl is Beautycounter’s SVP of Social Mission, where she leads the safety, sustainability, quality, advocacy and giving teams. A nationally recognized leader, Lindsay has been working for over 15 years to remove toxic chemicals from the products we use every day. Working at the intersection of activism, product safety, and sustainability, Lindsay takes a comprehensive approach to integrating social impact into everything we do at Beautycounter. Prior to joining the Beautycounter team, Lindsay spearheaded the passage of more than a dozen health protective laws at the state and federal levels, including the nation’s first ban on the toxic chemical BPA from baby bottles and other landmark laws on chemicals like flame retardants, mercury, and phthalates. In addition, Lindsay created a nationally acclaimed program—Mind the Store—to encourage top retailers to remove toxic chemicals from products. This initiative led to comprehensive health protective policies from Fortune 500 companies such as Target, Wal-Mart, CVS, The Home Depot and Best Buy. While working in DC, Lindsay was the Deputy Director of Safer Chemicals, Healthy Families, the country’s largest coalition working to update federal laws on toxic chemicals. There is something I find especially inspiring about craftsmen taking scraps or something considered as waste and making it into a beautiful, highly-desired product. That is exactly the work of Luke Mathers and Truce Designs. Luke first learned to sew industrial-grade fabrics while repairing sails and making boat covers. It was in that job that he discovered the scrap bin and the opportunity to reuse unwanted materials to make bags for his friends and family. Luke’s belief in environmentally responsible design and manufacturing led him to create Truce Designs. Today we are talking about how he takes old sails, scraps of wetsuit fabric and other high-performance materials and makes them into incredibly durable duffle bags, backpacks, messenger bags and dopp kits. Each textile Luke uses has a history, and a story to tell. Some have spent years voyaging open waters, other fabrics are repurposed from the factory floor. Be sure to listen to the entire episode because Luke and I have something up our sleeves that you don’t want to miss hearing about. About Luke and Truce Designs Luke learned to sew industrial-grade fabrics while repairing sails and making boat covers at North Sails Oregon. There he discovered the loft’s scrap bin, his first source of materials for crafting bags and accessories for his friends and family. Luke’s belief in environmentally responsible design and manufacturing led him to create Truce, a small collection of high-performance bags crafted from reclaimed materials. Imagine a world without litter. That is the mission of today’s guest, Jeff Kirshner, founder of Litterati. Litterati is an app that is empowering individuals to make a significant, measurable impact on the environment. By capturing data through geo-tagged photos of litter, Litterati is able to understand why the litter is on the street and where it is coming from. Litterati is a shining example of how communities are using technology and data to make the world a better place. When I first spoke with Jeff I was inspired by his passion to make a positive change, and what I find particularly fantastic about Litterati is that it really is about a collective effort across communities. I am a strong believer that we as individuals can take small actions to make a significant impact, and Litterati has shown, without a doubt, how a single person can inspire a community, influence an industry, and change government policies. About Jeff Former world backpacker turn bartender, Jeff Kirschner is a serial entrepreneur with a love for storytelling. And when his 4-year old daughter saw a plastic tub of cat litter in the woods, little did Jeff realize that it would be the spark for creating Litterati - a movement that’s “crowdsource-cleaning” the planet. Litterati has been featured by National Geographic, Rolling Stone, and Forbes, and they are backed by leading Silicon Valley investors, the National Science Foundation, and have been highlighted at TED. In this episode, I am talking with Cody Goldberg, founder and executive director of Harper’s Playground. In 2009, Cody did something very common for a parent of a five-year-old, he took his daughter Harper to a playground. At birth Harper was diagnosed with a rare genetic disorder that affects physical and cognitive development, as a result, Harper was using a wheeled walker. As they approached the playground, her walker got stuck in a mound of wood chips. At that moment, Cody realized that a place so valuable to childhood development wasn’t welcoming or accessible to his daughter. In what I call a “this or something better moment”, Cody resolved to dedicate his energy to creating playgrounds, where everyone, including kids and families with special needs, could play together. And thus the creation of Harper’s Playground. To date, Harper’s Playground has built or consulted on the creation of eleven inclusive playgrounds in Oregon, Washington, Iowa, and even a playground in Tokyo, Japan. The work of Harper’s playground goes well beyond play. It’s about connection, community, and inclusivity. In a time when many of us have never felt more isolated, Cody’s story and his passion for bringing people together has never been more important. About Cody G Cody QJ Goldberg is a dreamer and a doer. He is the child of bona fide San Francisco hippies and was once babysat by Janis Joplin. He received a BFA in Film/Television studies from New York University’s Tisch School of The Arts. At the age of 30 he “dropped out” to play percussion in a wandering tribal band of gypsies called “La Tribu Cosmica.” During that magical year in Mexico he filmed a documentary about the group and experience and became fluent in Spanish. Upon his return, he fell into a 14-year career in brand marketing for Adidas and Red Bull Energy Drink before working up the nerve to pursue his life’s true purpose. Cody speaks of his jump from a corporate career to running the non-profit he launched with his wife, April, in 2010. Together, they led a movement that designed, funded, and built the first totally inclusive playground in Portland, OR. Their passion project, Harper’s Playground, was featured on NBC’s The TODAY Show and their family had a day named for them by the mayor of Portland for their efforts. Goldberg reflects on lessons learned while raising $1.2 million in just over two years without an ounce of previous fundraising experience; sharing about collaboration, design, and politics. He weaves lessons learned during his own childhood with dreams of creating a better life for his own children. He often explains the GQ & J in his name, too. Cody, April, daughters Harper and Lennon, and their dog, Millie, make their home in the beautiful Pacific Northwest.
