Today we unravel one of the most infamous scandals in music history – the story of Milli Vanilli, the duo that rose to global stardom only to become the ultimate cautionary tale of pop culture. This is the tale of manufactured fame, kayfabe, and a lie that grew too big to sustain.--Written by Adam Smith--Join our Discord server!https://bit.ly/deepcutsdiscord--Pick up some Deep Cuts T-Shirts and other merch!https://bit.ly/deepcutsmerch--Get the official Deep Cuts shoulder patch!http://bit.ly/deepcuts_patch--Listen to our album, a 9 song rock opera about the rise and fall of Napster!https://open.spotify.com/album/63C5uu1tkzZ2FhfsrSSf5s?si=q4WItoNmRUeM159TxKLWew

What is Roar? It's a 1981 movie starring Noel Marshall, Tippi Hedren, and Melanie Griffith about a family that gets attacked by dozens of big cats. However, the movie itself isn't all that interesting compared to the story behind it because throughout production, as many as 70 people were injured from those cats, making it one of the most dangerous film productions in history. --Written by Mike Bedard--Join our Discord server!https://bit.ly/deepcutsdiscord--Pick up some Deep Cuts T-Shirts and other merch!https://bit.ly/deepcutsmerch--Get the official Deep Cuts shoulder patch!http://bit.ly/deepcuts_patch--Listen to our album, a 9 song rock opera about the rise and fall of Napster!https://open.spotify.com/album/63C5uu1tkzZ2FhfsrSSf5s?si=q4WItoNmRUeM159TxKLWew
About 150 organizations that support Oregon crime victims have lost much of their federal funding. With more than $18 million in cuts and no additional state funds, nonprofits and government programs that serve survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault, human trafficking and child abuse are preparing to lay off staff and severely reduce the support they provide to victims — both in and out of court.Melissa Erlbaum is the executive director of Clackamas Women’s Services. Due to funding loss, the non-profit will be forced to reduce the number of survivors it can serve by hundreds. And at Safety Compass — a nonprofit that supports sex trafficking survivors — founder Esther Garrett says the cuts threaten to unravel the vital safety net that advocacy provides crime victims.Erlbaum and Garrett join us alongside Clackamas County District Attorney John Wentworth, to tell us more about the consequences of the funding shortfall.

In my younger days, I was obsessed with sports. While I followed most sports, basketball, and baseball consumed my life. But somewhere in my early teens, sports started to matter a bit less. At that point, music became my passion. I didn't have any ability to play an instrument or sing, but with a radio studio always around, I was able to immerse myself in all types of music. It was only logical that music would be a significant focus throughout my radio career. And sometimes, I shock myself with the number of songs I know. A recent listen to satellite radio proved the point when I stumbled upon the Prime Country Deep Cuts channel... Burning Spear—born Winston Rodney in St. Ann's Bay, Jamaica—is not just a reggae artist; he is a vessel of history, resistance, and Rastafari wisdom. While his better-known songs, such as "Marcus Garvey," "Columbus," and "Slavery Days," defined 1970s roots reggae, there's a rich body of lesser-known tracks that offer just as much power, insight, and sonic magic. This one-hour mix delves into a deeper catalog: unreleased takes, dub versions, extended disco mixes, and forgotten B-sides that still resonate with Spear's unwavering spiritual and political voice. These are songs for those ready to go beneath the surface. Is Audible creating a healthy marketplace or a monopoly where indie authors struggle to make a living? CD Reiss, an independent author, sued Audible last year, saying it violated antitrust law by charging higher distribution fees for independent and self-published writers who do not choose Audible-exclusive distribution. Boston-based Hallelujah the Hills have released a brand new project called “Deck” a 52-song, four LP collection of music more than two years in the making. It's an epic collection of songs that encompass all sorts of styles and has been in the mind of band member Ryan H. Walsh for the last 25 years. In this episode, Ryan talks about the origin of “Deck” and the multi-year process to complete it. He talks about the distinct sounds of each LP, as well as the artwork he created and the app that people can use to make their own 13-song collection from “Deck.” Ryan shares the album release at Deep Cuts on June 21 and some upcoming summer shows. The album saw a ton of support on Patreon and Ryan goes into naming each supporter as an executive producer on the project. Closing out the episode is “Crush All Night,” one of the singles released ahead of the album.

He shared his experience of starting with a four-track and drum machine, working multiple jobs, and finally signing a record deal in 1999. Brown emphasized the importance of audience interaction in live performances and the impact of cover songs like "Teenage Dirtbag" and "Lemonade" on their success. He also highlighted the significance of originality in music, mentioning artists like St. Vincent and Juliana Hatfield as inspirations. Brown reflected on the evolving music industry and the importance of maintaining creative integrity. Brendan Brown from Wheatus discussed their extensive touring plans, including acoustic shows in August, a bus tour in October, and a UK tour from November 17 to December 13, culminating at Wembley Arena with Bowling for Soup. Host Jo Reed and AudioFile's Stephen Cummings agree that music enthusiasts will enjoy this debut audiobook, invitingly narrated by Jayme Mattler. The story is part slow-burn romance and part new adult fiction. In the early 2000s, Berkeley students Percy and Joe meet at a campus bar. Joe is fascinated by Percy's strong opinions on music and asks her to help him with his songwriting. After their collaboration, Joe's indie music career takes off, but he fails to give her songwriting credit. Mattler skillfully draws listeners into this story of romance, ambition, and identity. What was Ghostwatch? It was a paranormal investigation broadcast on Halloween night by the BBC. Presented by highly renowned British journalists and famous TV personalities, this ninety minute special horrified eleven million viewers. With disturbing footage of a family besieged by infernal presences, and an ending so shocking it elicited a national outrage, this televised report was without precedent. Because unbeknownst to many who tuned in that fateful All Hallow's Eve, the events of Ghostwatch were entirely fabricated. But was this mockumentary a successful prototype for the found footage horror films to come? Or did the Ghostwatch hoax spark an outbreak of genuine trauma?--Written by Matthew MitchellEdited by Lewis Poggie--Join our Discord server!https://bit.ly/deepcutsdiscord--Pick up some Deep Cuts T-Shirts and other merch!https://bit.ly/deepcutsmerch--Get the official Deep Cuts shoulder patch!http://bit.ly/deepcuts_patch--Listen to our album, a 9 song rock opera about the rise and fall of Napster!https://open.spotify.com/album/63C5uu1tkzZ2FhfsrSSf5s?si=q4WItoNmRUeM159TxKLWew

What is Birds Aren't Real? It's a satirical conspiracy theory designed to poke fun at legitimate conspiracies, spearheaded by Peter McIndoe. Since 2017, it's gained a massive online following, with plenty of people getting in on the joke while others harassed the founder. But even though it's all clearly meant to be satirical performance art, what can Birds Aren't Real tell us about actual conspiracies and how to dismantle them?--Written by Mike BedardEdited by Lewis Poggie--Join our Discord server!https://bit.ly/deepcutsdiscord--Pick up some Deep Cuts T-Shirts and other merch!https://bit.ly/deepcutsmerch--Get the official Deep Cuts shoulder patch!http://bit.ly/deepcuts_patch--Listen to our album, a 9 song rock opera about the rise and fall of Napster!https://open.spotify.com/album/63C5uu1tkzZ2FhfsrSSf5s?si=q4WItoNmRUeM159TxKLWew
