This Sunday, we began a new summer series, "Deep Cuts," considering stories and characters that don't get much airplay.
On Prime Time Jukebox Episode 188, we present our "Deep Cuts Playlist". In 2025, Dunbarton Tobacco & Trust (DTT): released a couple of samplers: Essentials and Deep Cuts. The "Essentials" represent the popular, must-smoke cigars in the DTT portfolio. Meanwhile Deep Cuts represent DTT Master Ligador Steve Saka's absolute favorite cigars (which might be deeper, less popular ones) in the portfolio that he smokes. Analogously Coop and Dave will build their own playlists inspired by this concept. Tonight's episode was inspired by the Deep Cuts sampler. Coop and Dave each select 8 artists and then pick some of their favorite deep cut songs from each artist. The Essentials Playlist was done on Prime Time Jukebox Episode 187. In addition, there will be Music News, Cigar News, Developing Palates' Review of the Week, and Dave's New Music 45. On this show the boys light up cigars from the Deep Cuts Sampler: Dave lights up Sobremesa Solita Red while Coop smokes a pre-release of the Mi Querida Black PapaSaka. Episode 188 Playlist

Deep Curts Live host Antoine Reid sits down with Scandinavian Tobacco Group's Justin Andrews to explore his journey from eastern North Carolina tobacco country to helping shape some of the cigar industry's biggest brands and collaborations. From contract manufacturing and blending to Diesel Cigars and industry partnerships, this episode offers an inside look at how modern premium cigar brands are built behind the scenes. In this episode, Justin discusses: Growing up in a tobacco farming family in North Carolina Learning cigar production firsthand in Nicaragua The evolution of cigar marketing and social media restrictions How collaborations changed the premium cigar landscape Building and evolving the Diesel Cigars brand Why construction, consistency, and balance matter in blending The realities of working across factories in Nicaragua, Honduras, and the Dominican Republic Justin also reflects on some of STG's most impactful projects, including collaborations with brands like Espinosa, Room101, Caldwell, and Illusione, while sharing how Diesel evolved from an online catalog brand into one of the industry's most respected Nicaraguan-focused portfolios. Whether you're interested in cigar blending, brand development, factory operations, or the business side of premium cigars, this episode delivers an honest look at the work happening behind the curtain of the modern cigar industry.
Season 6 of Deep Cuts Live continues with a high-energy conversation featuring Paul Copeland, owner of Shore Thing Cigars—one of the most experience-driven retail concepts in the premium cigar industry. In this episode, host Antoine Reid sits down with Paul to explore what it really takes to build a modern cigar retail business that goes beyond product and into atmosphere, hospitality, and storytelling. From launching a second location to rethinking customer engagement, Paul shares his unfiltered perspective on why the future of cigar retail is rooted in people—not product. The conversation dives into: • Why hospitality should come before inventory • How lighting, music, and environment influence cigar sales • The reality of limited editions and industry trends • Retail mistakes that are holding shops back • What trade shows look like from a seasoned retailer's perspective • Paul's approach to creating “raving fans” instead of one-time customers Paul also opens up about joining the PCA Board, his philosophy on business and life, and why he refuses complacency in everything he builds. Whether you're a retailer, a cigar enthusiast, or someone curious about the business behind premium cigars, this episode delivers raw insight, strong opinions, and real-world experience from one of the industry's most outspoken voices. ============================================= Subscribe to Deep Cuts Live for more conversations with the people shaping the premium cigar industry. Season 6 of Deep Cuts Live continues with a conversation centered on one of the most recognizable names in premium cigars. Host Antoine Reid sits down with Alex Weghorn, Brand Ambassador for Davidoff Cigars, to explore the evolving role of brand storytelling, consumer experience, and innovation in today's cigar industry. In this episode, Alex shares his journey from retail tobacconist to representing one of the industry's most established brands, offering insight into what it means to educate, engage, and connect with consumers in a more experience-driven marketplace. This interview covers: • The role of social media in shaping the modern cigar industry • Why “time beautifully filled” still defines the Davidoff philosophy • The importance of consistency, balance, and intentional smoking • How experiences—not promotions—build lasting brand loyalty • What it means to represent Davidoff as a brand ambassador The episode also takes a closer look at Davidoff's newest release, Puro Dominicana, a Dominican puro that highlights the brand's continued focus on innovation while staying rooted in its core identity. Whether you're a seasoned cigar enthusiast or new to the category, this conversation offers a deeper understanding of how premium cigar brands are adapting to a new generation of consumers—while preserving the craftsmanship that defines the industry. ============================================= Subscribe to Deep Cuts Live for more conversations with the people shaping the premium cigar industry. Season 6 of Deep Cuts Live continues with the return of Robin James, founder of Blue Smoke ATL, for a conversation on creativity, entrepreneurship, and carving out a unique lane within the premium cigar industry. Robin's work sits at the intersection of function and design—handcrafting cigar pokers that double as statement pieces. In this episode, she shares how a simple idea turned into a growing business, evolving from direct-to-consumer sales to retail, wholesale, and distribution channels. The conversation explores: * The creative process behind designing custom cigar accessories * How COVID-era demand accelerated early business growth * The shift from individual sales to retail and wholesale expansion * Challenges marketing cigar-related products in a restricted social media environment * Why in-person experiences still outperform digital when it comes to product discovery * Building a brand through relationships, consistency, and word-of-mouth Robin also discusses her plans to expand Blue Smoke ATL into a broader accessory line, while reflecting on what it means to stay adaptable in an industry that continues to evolve. This episode offers a different perspective on the cigar business—one rooted in craftsmanship, creativity, and solving overlooked problems in the smoking experience. ============================================= Subscribe to Deep Cuts Live for more conversations with the people shaping the premium cigar industry. What happens when the patient and the surgeon sit down together? In this episode of Deep Cuts, we hear from Chloe, a gun violence survivor, and Dr. Ken Wilson, the trauma surgeon at UChicago medicine who fought to save her life. Their conversation is raw, honest, and deeply human — a reminder that behind every statistic is a name, a story, and a community that feels the weight of gun violence every single day. Kenneth Wilson, MD, has more than a decade of experience as a trauma, acute care and critical care surgeon for both adult and pediatric patients. He treats all related conditions, including giant ventral hernias, a condition that can occur after abdominal trauma and requires an extremely complex surgical approach. Dr. Wilson is an active researcher, and has been widely published on topics including military trauma and trauma surgical outcomes. He is interested in the association between race and socioeconomic status on trauma-related health outcomes. Deep Cuts comes to you from the Department of Surgery at the University of Chicago, which is located on Ojibwe, Odawa and Potawatomi land. Our senior editors are Alia Abiad, Caroline Montag, and Chuka Onuh. Our editorial team includes Megan Teramoto, Elizabeth Yearsley, Faiza Shaik, and Azeem Saifee. Our senior producer is Nihar Rama. In the second part of this 2-part series, Bomani Jones is joined by DJ Wally Sparks for a deep dive into Prince's catalog, from the early records to the Warner years that made him a legend. They get into Purple Rain vs. Sign o' the Times, why When Doves Cry feels untouchable, why Little Red Corvette has a real case as Prince's best song, and which deep cuts and B-sides still hit the hardest. Finally, they have a full-on music nerd conversation about Prince's genius period, the records that aged best, and the songs that prove nobody else was operating on his level. Note: Sorry for the radio silence! Long story short, the latest MacBook Pro seems to have some kind of line-wide defect. When I first bought it last year, the screen died a day later. And I got another one, and it worked fine for like a year and then about three weeks ago the screen died again. I took it to the Apple Store for a repair, they fixed it, I got it...and the screen died again. And so I had to get it fixed all over again. Unfortunately I opted for the 64gb ram version, which they don't sell in stores. So every time I need it fixed, it takes a week to order in the parts. Needless to say, this has completely made me unable to edit the show or any other videos. But I've got my computer back now and it seems to be going strong, so we'll be back to regular posting.--BACK OUR PATREON!https://bit.ly/deepcutspatreonCHECK OUT OUR NEW YOUTUBE CHANNEL!https://bit.ly/mysterytreehouse--If you lived in New York in the '80s or '90s and had a taste for the weird corners of cable television, you might have stumbled upon a public access show called Dirge of the Charlatans. It aired at strange hours and looked like something taped in a janitor's closet. Its host was a manic street corner preacher in a cheap suit who punched up at politicians, crooked police, and the government at large. On this episode of Word Balloon, I'm joined by writer Dave Baker to talk about his new Top Shelf graphic novel Punk N' Head, a wild, heartfelt, and sharp-edged story that blends music, identity, and outsider energy into something that feels both chaotic and personal. Dave breaks down the inspiration behind the book, the visual collaboration, and why this one hits close to home.We also get into his adventures in animation writing. The hustle, the rooms, the realities of working in that fast-moving industry, and he shares an absolutely insane story about developing a Navy SEALs vs. aliens film that proves Hollywood can be as surreal as any sci-fi script. On top of that, we talk about his own podcast Deep Cuts, where Dave digs into the overlooked, under-discussed corners of pop culture. It's a funny, candid, and occasionally unbelievable conversation about making comics, surviving the entertainment business, and finding your voice in the chaos.

Scott made a social media post about the ruling on the field during the Buffalo Bills vs. Denver Broncos NFL Playoff game, and it went a bit viral. It was a quick, normal-people-language explanation of the controversial interception call from that game. Scott explained what the call on the field was and why it was called.
