Joel Brewer, founder and CEO of Brewer Digital, joins Jeff Mains on Future Proof Founder to cut through the AI hype and get practical about what it actually means to build software in 2025. Joel brings a developer's perspective to a conversation that's usually dominated by non-technical voices — and the result is a grounded, honest look at how early-stage SaaS founders can work with engineering teams, avoid costly mistakes, and use AI as a tool rather than a crutch. From rescuing failed offshore builds to helping non-technical founders navigate Claude Code, Joel shares what he's learned from 13 years in the startup trenches. The conversation covers sandbox environments, the evolving definition of a senior engineer, the difference between bootstrapped and VC-backed engineering cultures, and why clear goals — not shiny tools — are still the most valuable thing in any founder's arsenal.Key Takeaways3:46 — Joel shares how getting fired launched his 13-year journey building Brewer Digital from freelance Rails work to a full software development agency for early-stage founders.6:59 — Goals before tools. Joel's antidote to AI-driven chaos: go back to basics. Know where you're headed before you pick up a tool. AI accelerates whatever you point it at — including anxiety.11:36 — The sandbox lesson. Real-world story: a client went rogue with Claude Code and made changes directly to a production database, thinking they were just experimenting. Sandboxes exist for a reason.14:15 — The new definition of a senior engineer. From Google I/O: senior engineers used to be defined by what they could build that others couldn't. Now, they're defined by what they understand that others don't — especially critical as AI writes more code.15:17 — The construction metaphor. AI doesn't eliminate the need for engineers — it expands what's possible to build. We went from huts to skyscrapers with better tools. The same shift is happening in software.19:36 — Communication breaks before code does. When Joel steps into a failed project, the first red flag he looks for isn't the codebase — it's whether communication between founders and engineers has broken down.21:08 — Optimize for the right thing. Feedback loops are powerful — but only if you've already defined what you're optimizing for. Shipping features faster means nothing if the features aren't moving the needle.24:21 — The Southwest Airlines principle. Joel shares a CEO quote about the real goal of flying a plane — not the technical operation, but getting someone home for Christmas. The same applies to product teams: the feature is never the goal.25:52 — Bootstrapped vs. VC-backed engineering cultures. Bootstrappers tend toward capital efficiency and caution. VC-backed companies optimize for velocity and growth at scale. Different goals, different cultures — both valid depending on the mission.30:21 — What gets lost when AI replaces people. When you replace humans with agents, you lose humanity and irreplaceable individual creativity. Joel argues that sitting with a notebook for 15 minutes can still outperform an hour with AI for generating genuinely inspired thinking.33:36 — Advice for non-technical founders hiring developers. Know your goals for the product before the first engineering conversation. Engineers love solving problems — if you don't guide them with clear goals, they'll solve the wrong one brilliantly.35:03 — The future of founder-engineering relationships. AI removes code-writing as the bottleneck. The new bottleneck is communication — rapid testing, alignment, and iteration between product, founder, and engineering.38:24 — Complexity kills growth. AI tools are excellent at adding complexity. Founders who learn to fight that tendency — preferring simplicity and brevity — will have a structural advantage.Tweetable Quotes"AI becomes a tool when you know where you're headed. If you don't know your destination, AI just helps you get lost faster." — Joel Brewer"A senior engineer used to be someone who could build what others couldn't. Now, they're someone who understands what others don't." — Joel Brewer"The sandbox isn't optional. You can ask Claude to change your production database, and it will. Enthusiastically." — Joel Brewer"Complexity kills growth. AI is really good at adding complexity. That's a problem worth solving on purpose." — Joel Brewer"I sat down with a notebook for 15 minutes and had more genuinely inspired ideas than an hour with AI. People can still think. That's not nothing." — Joel Brewer"If your imagination is unlimited, AI doesn't replace you — it just lets you build the skyscraper instead of the hut." — Joel Brewer"We're not very good at predicting the future. And when there's a lot of money involved in selling a specific version of it, that's worth keeping in mind." — Joel BrewerSaaS Leadership Lessons1. Start with goals, not tools. The most expensive AI mistakes happen when founders adopt a tool and then search for a use case. Reverse the order: define what you're trying to accomplish, then evaluate whether AI actually serves that goal. Tool-first thinking creates fast, sophisticated chaos.2. Build a sandbox culture — literally and figuratively. Non-technical founders experimenting with AI-assisted development tools need guardrails. In software, that means sandboxed environments separated from production. In leadership, it means creating space for experimentation that doesn't put the business at risk. Permission to explore is only valuable when the blast radius is contained.3. The new competitive edge is understanding, not output. As AI commoditizes the ability to generate code, copy, and content, the strategic advantage shifts to comprehension — people who understand why something works, what the architecture actually does, and when not to build something at all. Leaders who can explain the machine are worth more than leaders who can only operate it.4. Communication is the bottleneck AI just uncovered. Before AI, writing code was slow enough that communication gaps could hide. Now that code can be written in hours, the limiting factor is alignment — between founders and engineers, product and market, vision and execution. Founders who invest in communication infrastructure will outpace those who just invest in faster tools.5. Tie every feature to a business outcome — before the first line of code. Engineers are problem-solvers. They will build what you put in front of them. If the problem you hand them isn't connected to a business goal, they'll build the wrong thing exceptionally well. Make the goal explicit, measurable, and understood by the whole team before any work begins.6. The human element isn't a liability — protect it. When every company is using similar AI stacks, the differentiator becomes the people. Human creativity — particularly the kind that emerges from unstructured thinking time — is increasingly rare and undervalued. The best leaders will use AI to create more space for deep thinking, not less.Guest Resourcesjoel@brewerdigital.com www.brewerdigital.com https://www.linkedin.com/in/joel-brewer-69680037/ Episode SponsorThe Futureproof Series - https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLfkXKUPZ5xuOqMPR7_gzGybncTtavyR1NThe Captain's KeysSmall Fish, Big Pond – https://smallfishbigpond.com/ Use the promo code ‘SaaSFuel'Champion Leadership Group – https://championleadership.com/https://jeffmains.com/books/SaaS Fuel ResourcesWebsite - https://championleadership.com/Jeff Mains on LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/jeffkmains/Twitter - https://twitter.com/jeffkmainsFacebook - https://www.facebook.com/thesaasguy/Instagram - https://instagram.com/jeffkmains

Tyler Anbinder discusses the significant role of the Irish in the American Civil War, particularly the 69th Regiment. Many joined for military training to eventually liberate Ireland, but they fought enthusiastically for the Union out of gratitude to their new home. Heroes like James Kavanaugh demonstrated extraordinary bravery at Antietam and Fredericksburg, though they often returned to menial work after the war. The segment also addresses the intense anti-Irish and anti-Catholic prejudice of the era, exemplified by Judson Saus, a ballroom teacher who felt compelled to hide his Irish identity to achieve professional success. A Sunday morning sermon by Pastor Brett Deal. Before the start of my Senior year, I had a surprise chance to come to the States, so I set out from the island of Bioko in Central Africa for far off middle America. The whole way across the Atlantic, I had almost exclusively one thing on my mind: new music! I was barely settled in my room at a small hostel for missionary kids in college, and I was looking for a ride to record store. It might be hard to remember what it was like in the days before streaming and clouds and the digital revolution we're currently in, but back then, unless I wanted to buy grainy knock off cassettes in Nairobi, the land of music was America. Barely had my feet touched the ground and I was loading up sample CDs at the store. One of those CDS has become one my favorites, one I go back to time and time again. It's Purpose by Design by Fred Hammond & Radical for Christ. This album sprints out the gate on the first track, with "I Want My Destiny." You can feel the theology of the song as much as the funky slap bass. This song is a time capsule in my journey of faith. It sings of a life redeemed by Christ. It rejoices in a life recreated for purpose. It shouts of a passion to serve the One “Who brought me and is able to keep me” and to follow Jesus “to the place where He has need of me.” These lyrics provide the surround sound of Apostle Paul's album to the Philippians. His entire epistle, according to G. Walter Hansen is Paul “urging them to join with him in his own journey to know Christ.” Hearing his epistle, set to this soundtrack, we are challenged to recognize, in Christ, our eternal citizenship has current blessing bearer responsibilities. Our salvation is fire insurance. It's calling. It's purpose. We must start living out our citizenship now. Enthusiastically awaiting Jesus' return, “with the time we have / Let's waste not all on selfish reasons / But we must seek to please Him first / Find His will upon the Earth” so that “When they look back from death to birth / They'll say they've seen Him.”

The Honeymoon.Captain Evelyn Sage starts a new life with Professor Don.In 13 parts, By BradentonLarry - Listen to the Podcast at Explicit Novels.Chapter 6. The HoneymoonToshia punched Don in the shoulder. "Ha! I knew it!" she laughed. "I knew you two were into each other!""First, ow! Second, yeah, yeah, I thought so too, Well, I hoped, and I'm glad you were right."She leaned in and kissed his cheek, "I'm glad, too. I can't be the only love of your life.""That escalated quickly!" Don laughed. "And why not?""Well, I've got Sarah, and a girl's only got so much time and energy," she grinned.Don smiled at her and said, "That's fair, I suppose.""But, so what happened? Did she go with you to get her own ring?""Yes, she did," Don nodded. "She left Megan in command of the Maidenhead, and we took the Riverboat upriver, set off cross country, got to the valley and then climbed up to the Crimson Mountain.""You are leaving so much out!" Toshia laughed."Well, I've got to finish the story, right?""Yeah, but give me the highlights at least. Did Sage go back to her celibacy?""Oh no, that was over," Don smiled."Excellent! This must have been like your honeymoon. How did she like the Riverboat and the Resort? Is she as much fun in an orgy as I am?""Well, first, nobody's as much fun at an orgy as you are!""Suck up!"Don laughed, "And, 'honeymoon'? I don't know if I'd go that far, but I see your point. Well, we cut through Rendezvous pretty quickly, and we managed to catch the Riverboat just before it started upriver.""That was lucky.""Oh, we would have found some way to pass the time, ""I'm sure!" Toshia grinned. "So, how was the river trip? At least tell me about that.""Well, we talked about it and decided to try to stick together as much as possible until we got to the pleasure dome. So, if they played the same game the first night, we'd sit it out, but they had another mixer scheduled."After the flurry of activity involved in leaving the Maidenhead and getting to the Riverboat (and Sage wanted to know why it didn't have a name), they enjoyed the opportunity to enjoy a spirited session of fucking on the nearest lounger. Then they commandeered an empty cabin for a nice shower, which, naturally enough, led to more sex, first in the shower, and then on the cabin's bed, which eventually led them back into the shower. As they were drying off and Sage was gathering up the clothes she had brought along, a pretty, blonde woman in a white uniform with a rather short skirt appeared in the cabin doorway and said, "Welcome aboard!""Hi, Sally," Don waved."Oh, hi, Don! Welcome back! We're going to have a fun mixer game in a little bit! It's couples night, so partner up and meet us all up in the ballroom!" Then she had hurried on."I'm standing right here," Sage grumbled with mock irritation.Don shrugged, "I suppose she didn't want to presume anything.""Was it 'couples night,' when you were here before?""No, the first time was kind of a random mixer, 'Cabin Fever,' I think, and the second time Shelonda and I skipped the activity."As they made their way up to the ballroom, Sage asked about the random mixer and Don explained how the women went to claim cabins for themselves while he and the other men waited in the ballroom until Sally let them draw numbers from a black bag she had."We then went to the cabin that matched up with the number and 'got to know' whichever woman was there. When a chime sounded, we hurried back to the ballroom to draw another number.""Wow, that must have been, interesting. You just stopped in the middle of whatever you were doing and went back to the ballroom?""Pretty much, yeah," Don nodded."Even if you were in the middle of sex?""Well, yeah, that was sort of the point, I think. On the one hand, that encouraged you not to waste time, and, on the other, it built up a kind of crazed intensity. After the first round, I can say that the women I met were very much 'come here right now!' if you know what I mean."Sage laughed, "Ay, I know what ye mean. How many rounds were there?""I think there were six.""Hum, how did Toshia take all of this?""Enthusiastically," Don smiled. "When the game was over and I caught up with her, and Shelonda, she was, well, rather extremely well-fucked. I think she said she'd been able to count eight guys.""Eight for six rounds?""Well, there were more men than women, so Sally apparently occasionally sent two guys to the same room. Then, Toshia and Shelonda took a break for one round and then played in the same room, which caused a bit of confusion. But yeah, I'm pretty sure she said eight, though she wasn't exactly counting, like she was in the Disco.""Eight's pretty damn impressive," Sage mused."Well, it was actually at least nine, counting me, after the game was over," Don said, "but that was small potatoes compared to her night in the Disco or her gangbang with the Sisters.""Ah, okay, I have so many questions."By this time, they had gotten to the ballroom, where they scored some fruit and took up a position off to the side where they could talk while waiting for Sally to commence the game. As he told her about the night in the Disco, Don idly noticed that the ballroom had been redecorated. There were low couches arranged so that there were four largish circles in the corners of the big room and one in the center. There were a lot of pillows about, too."So, eighteen guys? In one night?" Sage was clearly impressed."Well, no, that's just in the Disco," Don smiled. "After that we played a game with the Player, so the count was higher, plus some play with women.""Damn! She's quite the woman, eh?""There were more in the next story, and you saw her with your crew, but yeah, she is," nodded Don. Then he had a thought, and quickly said, "I love her, Sage, but you should know, I didn't decide to stay here in Eros until I met you."Sage fixed Don with an amused smile and said, "You don't have to worry about me, Don. I'm not the insecure, possessive type, and I can tell you're nuts about me. In fact, ," she slipped up in front of him and took his cock in her hand. With a serious glint in her eye and a crooked grin, she said, in full piratic, "ye belong t'me now. I just be happy t'share.""Well, alrighty then," Don smiled. He reached around her with both hands, squeezed her perfect ass, and said, "Right back at ye, Cap'n Sage."With her free hand she pulled his head down, and before kissing him said "Actually, it's Evelyn."Their deep, passionate kiss would certainly have led to yet another bout of enthusiastic sex, but Sally chose that moment to ring a bell she'd brought along for the occasion to get everyone's attention."Okay!" Sally grinned. "If you've all picked your partners, we're ready to play a game we call 'Spin the Bottle'!""Seriously?" Sage/Evelyn laughed."This should be good," Toshia chuckled."If you'll all take places around the five circles here, there should be room for four couples at each! And we have twenty couples tonight - perfect! House rules are that everyone starts out naked!" Sally beamed."Shouldn't that include you, Sally?" Don shouted, laughing."I'm not playing, silly!" she laughed back."It was worth a try," Don muttered to Sage, as he happily helped her get out of her clothes, which they tossed onto the low couch on the edge of their chosen circle, which was the corner one to port and forward."She does seem like she'd be, exuberant," Sage chuckled. "Hey, don't forget you're going to tell me about that gangbang.""Sure," Don grinned, "though, remember that that one is all second hand.""Okay, now take a minute to get to know each other while we come around and get a little information from each of you!" Sally shouted. The people around their little circle had arranged themselves in a male-female sequence, and there were no same-sex couples in their group, though Don could see that there were some of those at other circles. Sage was on his immediate right, and on her right was a fit young man with short, curly black hair and blue eyes named Pete and his partner, a young and short Persian woman with wavy dark brown hair cropped short, slender build, big tits, and beautiful amber eyes named Mahsati. Next came Lawrence, a short light-skinned black man with hazel eyes, long, straight dark brown hair, and a variety of tattoos, and his companion (at least for the game) Tina, a blue-eyed woman with a curly mane of deep brown hair with various shades of blonde highlights. Finally, there was Reyansh, a clearly Indian or Pakistani fellow with an athletic build and a neatly trimmed beard to go with his short black hair, and his partner Felicia, a tiny, thin woman with light grey eyes and blonde hair in a pixie cut, and legs that were quite long relative to the rest of her small stature. Felicia kind of reminded Don of the first fairy who had accosted him in the valley of the fey.It turned out that only Reynash and Felicia had known each other before today. "We were having a great time together in Rendezvous, heard about the Resort, and thought we'd try it out," said Reynash in his noticeably accented voice. While they were talking, a tall, curvy woman with large breasts and long curly black hair, who was wearing a uniform like Sally's, came up with a clipboard and a quill pen and started talking to each member of the circle, making some notes, and then moving on. She eventually got to Don, smiled at him, and said, "Hi, I'm Miriam, and I'll be hosting your circle tonight.""Hi Miriam," Don smiled. Her eyes were a very deep brown and he was wishing she weren't wearing that uniform, and/or would be joining in the game."I need your name and your preference in regard to sexual partners," Miriam said with a smile."Don, and women."Sage responded with "Sage, and I like both men and women. Maybe men just a little bit more.""Why do they need that?" Sage asked as Miriam moved on."I have no idea," Don shrugged. "I'm guessing it will keep me from making out with Pete. There's often this kind of low-level 'magic' going on, like how they managed to send men only to cabins women had occupied. I just roll with it these days.""If you'll have a seat," Miriam smiled at all of them, "we can get started." She had done something with her clipboard, which was nowhere to be seen, and was now holding a glass bottle in one hand and a pocket watch in the other.Like the others, Don and Sage sat down on the floor on pillows and awaited instruction. Miriam set the bottle down in the center of the circle, consulted her watch, and said, "We'll start out with just kissing, okay?"Don exchanged a shrug with Sage and then took his turn nodding to Miriam."Very good! Tina, you go first. Just give the bottle a spin!"Don watched her crawl out to the center of the circle and flip the bottle, which seemed to spin a bit faster than it should, and as if it was turning on a fixed axis. It came to rest pointing directly at Pete."Come on over here," Tina laughed, and Pete moved on all fours to her. The other six players and Miriam watched as the two of them kissed tentatively and then more passionately. By the time Miriam called "Time!" they were really into it, each squeezing the other's ass tightly."Reynash, you're next," Miriam announced. In another minute, lucky Reynash was making out with lovely Mahsati.Felicia spun next, and the bottle selected Sage. As he watched her tight ass while she crawled the short distance to Felicia, Don realized he had never seen Sage do anything at all with anyone else. This added a level of intensity to this moment of voyeurism that was quite odd for his time in Eros. He was quite turned on just watching his partner kissing tiny Felicia. All too soon, Miriam called time, and then Don realized it was his turn.He was quite pleased to welcome beautiful young Mahsati to the center of the circle with a long, kiss. In the spirit the others had established, he didn't hesitate to draw her into his arms, enjoying the feeling of her big breasts pressed against his chest or her slender waist in his hands. When Miriam called time, he breathed a heartfelt, "Damn!"Then it was Sage's turn, and she got Felicia. "Come get some seconds, cutie," Sage grinned. This time, Sage took a more aggressive approach, pulling the little woman onto her lap and kissing her deeply, one hand cupping a breast and then pinching a nipple, making Tina gasp and wiggle against her. When Sage got back to her pillow, she whispered to Don, "I had no idea spin the bottle was this much fun!""I think this is just the warm-up," laughed Don.They completed two complete cycles around the circle at this level of interaction. When Mahsati spun next she got Don, and he was more than happy to lean her back and kiss her deeply, one hand under her back and the other squeezing and teasing her tits. That was the only time the bottle picked Don. "That's what you get for not going both ways," Sage teased him. Actually, it was Lawrence who was the unluckiest of the bunch, being completely ignored by the bottle and only getting to kiss someone when it was his turn.At the other end of the extreme, the clear winner was Sage, who got selected four times. With that and her own two turns, she wound up making out with everyone except Mahsati and Lawrence, and twice each with lucky Pete and Felicia. Sage's high point came in the second round, when Don won the chance to kiss her, then she spun and got to make out with Pete, and then Pete spun and was lucky enough to get Sage! Between them Don and Pete did their best to get her nicely riled up. At the end of this, Sage leaned on Don's shoulder and said, "I'm so ready to get past this kissing stuff!"When it was Tina's third turn, Miriam stopped her and asked, "Are you all ready to turn things up a bit?"Everyone enthusiastically agreed they were."Okay," she smiled. "Now whoever spins has to go down on the selected person."This caused a unanimous murmur of approval, and Tina hurried out to the bottle. In another moment, she had her head in Pete's lap, her long, curly hair obscuring everyone's view of what she was doing, though the distinctive up and down motion told the tale well enough. All too quickly, particularly from Pete's perspective, Miriam called time. Don was pretty sure the previous rounds had been longer, with the second a bit longer than then first. This would make good sense if the intention was to build up the sexual tension as much as possible.Reynash took his turn and won a chance to taste Sage. She gave Don a grin and a wink as she told Reynash to get on his back, and then promptly straddled his bearded face. Don watched intently as she bit her lower lip and clasped her tits tightly in her hands. Before she could really get into it, though, Miriam called time. As she returned to Don's side, Sage whispered "Bitch!" but Don could tell she was having fun.The bottle rewarded Reynash for his efforts by pointing to him when Felicia spun next. With her short hair it was easy to watch her lick at his cock and then take it into her mouth. She seemed to have caught on that she wouldn't have much time, so she made no effort to actually bring him off.

Post-Dispatch podcasts page: https://go.stltoday.com/0hfn43 Please consider subscribing: https://go.stltoday.com/9aigz5 From near his perch at Busch Stadium, where he calls games for the Cardinals' Spanish language broadcast, Polo Ascensio surveys the style of game, the style of play, and, yes, the style of his calls for the 2025 Cardinals. The nine-game home stand did not lack for some compelling games -- though evidently there is some debate on how entertaining the opening innings of the Cardinals' 2-1 victory against the Dodgers was -- and that had to be reflected in the calls from all of the broadcast booths. Ahead of Toronto completing a series sweep of the Cardinals, Ascensio spoke with Post-Dispatch baseball writer Derrick Goold about those calls, about the enthusiasm and inspiration he brings to them as well as whether this team has made such energy easier with its style of play. Ascensio also discusses the catching history of the Cardinals and the catching present, with background on how two members of the current team, Willson Contreras and Ivan Herrera, signed with the Cardinals specifically because of their fondness for former Cardinals catcher Yadier Molina. The podcast explores why Contreras stayed with the Cardinals when the team, pivoting toward youth, offered to trade him to a contender, and there a conversation about Herrera's future at catcher. Ascensio's broadcasts with former catcher and former Cardinals coach Bengie Molina are available for every home game on WIJR/880 AM La Tremenda. There is hope from many parties in and around the Cardinals that the broadcasts will expand beyond home games, especially if the club continues to contend late into the season. The Best Podcast in Baseball is in its 13th year as one of the first and most-downloaded baseball podcasts and a leader among the Cardinals-based podcasts. It is sponsored weekly by Closets by Design of St. Louis, and it is a production of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, StlToday.com, and Derrick Goold. It is part of the constant Cardinals coverage available at StlToday.com and in the pages of the Post-Dispatch daily.

On procrastination and productivity

Paws and Reflect

This morning I find myself saying to Sean, not for the first time: “You know, whenever I build a task up in my head and then actually sit down to do it, it's easier than I imagined? Not sure why I put things off.”I am not proud of this recurring declaration.I've long been a bit of a procrastinator—usually motivated by perfectionism—who manages to rarely miss deadlines but consistently doubt the quality of what she turns in. I often feel like I don't have the resources or focus or ability to do something perfectly right now… but maybe I will tomorrow. Or the next day. Or, you know, when rubbing right up against the due date. This tendency got worse the first year we lived in our converted van. We were so busy with the logistics of a life on the road (and, admittedly, the associated joys) that I grew accustomed to putting tasks off before knocking them out in a late-night haze. I once set an alarm for three am to finish a copywriting assignment I'd had a full week to complete. (I mean, that's inexcusable.) Even just last fall, after I'd organized my life on the Todoist app and kicked my writing practice into better gear, I still occasionally fell into the habit. I revised my first piece for ROVA Magazine (an article I was so excited to share) up until the morning it was due.On the surface, everything is fine. I'm a functioning (perhaps even highly functioning) professional. Most of my clients and editors are happy to work with me; at least some of my quality concerns have more to do with imposter syndrome and overthinking than the actual work I submit. But too often—entirely too often—I carry the weight of an uncompleted task days longer than necessary. It infiltrates my ocean swims. It colors my interactions with Sean. It pushes me to maniacally read other people's words in hopes of forgetting that I am not (but should be) writing my own.I feel even worse about this impulse to put things off because I work from such a privileged position. The reasons I procrastinate are 1) I'm concerned about doing things well enough or 2) I'm distracted by living in the real world—basically never because I'm truly exhausted, lacking support, or bereft of the right resources. There are people producing amazing art and commentary and impact in astronomically more difficult situations than mine. My life is so cushy. I should be able to write an article about training rescue dogs in one damn sitting!Lately my procrastination takes a disguised form: Enthusiastically working on something that isn't due while ignoring a piece that is. It's increasingly rare that I put off a task because I'm lounging in the sun or burying my nose in a novel or scrolling social media. That's good—that's great!—but just because I'm writing doesn't mean I'm writing the most important thing.Of course, what's “important” is a whole discussion. Sometimes inspiration strikes in a moment I blocked off to finish work for a client and the romantic artist in me latches on with worry the idea will disappear before I can act on it. Sometimes this situation produces a piece I love, and that sense of accomplishment lifts me through the rest of the day (maybe even the rest of the week), and I'm happy in all the ways: creatively, logistically, professionally.Other times the inspiration is a red herring. Or too complex to tackle right away. And I can't even live under the illusion that I was being productive by spending my time on a half-baked, questionable premise instead of the clearly defined task begging for my attention. The solution here seems simple: Just do the thing. I know, logically, that I always feel better after doing the thing! Doing the thing rarely prevents me from also doing other things later on! Why is this a problem?!A whole bunch of reasons, I think: I'm a creatively minded person willing to ride whims. I have no semblance of a structured schedule. I've built rapport enough with my editors—and also am content enough with my life in general—that the stakes usually feel low. (And while I used to long for this level of comfort, there's no denying we sometimes need a fire under us to get going.)So I'm trying to light more controlled fires. In the upper right corner of my desktop, a digital sticky note displays my top six life priorities in order. I've set a rule—and asked Sean for enforcement help—that I'm not allowed to reschedule tasks on my to-do list unless there's an emergency. (Not wanting to put down an interesting book is not an emergency.) I'm reaching out to fellow writers to build a stronger craft community, something I've been lacking for too long. I am repeating, over and over, that “done and good enough is better than perfect”. I am setting more ambitious deadlines for client work—and communicating those deadlines to editors ahead of time so I have no way out.I am also giving myself grace, because I love this life I've built (and lucked into), and there's a reason I left my stable 9-5 in pursuit of greater flexibility. I do not need—and sure as hell do not want—to work all the time. I just want to work more effectively. And float on my back in the Atlantic without worrying about missing checklist ticks. The Rich Zeoli Show- Full Episode (03/18/2024): 3:05pm- While speaking at a campaign event in Ohio over the weekend, Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump predicted that there would be an economic “bloodbath” for the automotive manufacturing industry if he didn't win the 2024 presidential election in November. Of course, Democrats and dishonest members of the media took the statement out of context—instead suggesting that Trump had openly called for a “bloodbath”, or a massacre, should he lose. A selectively trimmed nine-second clip was reposted by numerous social media accounts belonging to members of the political left, including: Biden-Harris HQ and Joe Scarborough (who quickly deleted his post). The strategically edited audio inaccurately makes it appear as though Trump is calling for violence. On Monday, morning shows on ABC, CBS, and NBC all promoted the fake narrative as well. 3:15pm- A montage posted to social media by Tom Elliot features members of the media routinely using the term “bloodbath” to refer to elections. The clip features: Rachel Maddow, Charles Blow, Mika Brzezinski, Van Jones, Jake Tapper, Joe Scarborough, Ali Velshi, Don Lemon, Joy Reid, Brian Williams, Whoopi Goldberg, Andrew Yang, Simone Sanders, Michael Steele, and David Frum. Notably, Goldberg and Scarborough are now explicitly saying that the use of a term like “bloodbath” is outside the bounds of acceptable behavior. 3:40pm- In response to Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump's campaign speech in Ohio where he used the term “bloodbath” to describe what could happen economically to the American automobile industry, the Biden-Harris campaign released this over-the-top and purposefully misleading statement: “Tonight, Donald Trump said there would be a 'bloodbath' if he wasn't elected and that if he lost there would be no more elections. After opening the general election by meeting with authoritarian leaders and rallying alongside conspiracy theorists, Donald Trump continues to praise dictators, promise to pardon political violence, and launch racist attacks against Black and brown Americans. It's why last night, Trump's own former Vice President Mike Pence, who Trump supporters called to hang for not overturning the election, came out against Trump. This is who Donald Trump is: a loser who gets beat by over 7 million votes and then instead of appealing to a wider mainstream audience doubles down on his threats of political violence. He wants another January 6, but the American people are going to give him another electoral defeat this November because they continue to reject his extremism, his affection for violence, and his thirst for revenge." 4:05pm- Wayne Parry of the Associated Press writes: “An offshore wind power project proposed for New Jersey would have 157 turbines and be located 8.4 miles from shore at its closest point, data released by the federal government Friday shows. The U.S. Bureau of Ocean Energy Management said it will begin an environmental review Monday of the Atlantic Shores project. It released key details of the project in announcing the environmental review. New Jersey energy regulators approved Atlantic Shores' 1,510 megawatt project in 2021. It would generate enough electricity to power more than 700,000 homes.” You can read the full article report here: https://www.inquirer.com/news/new-jersey/nj-offshore-wind-farm-atlantic-shores-20240315.html 4:15pm- On Monday, the United States Supreme Court heard oral argument in Murthy v. Missouri—a case which will determine whether officials within the federal government can use their power to coerce social media platforms into censoring speech they unilaterally deem harmful and/or misinformation. While questioning the U.S. Principal Deputy General Brain Fletcher, Justice Samuel Alito seemed to suggest that government pressuring social media companies to do their bidding is violative of the First Amendment, explaining: “The only reason why this is taking place is because the federal government has got Section 230 and antitrust in its pocket…it's got these big clubs available to it—so it's treating Facebook and these other platforms like they are subordinates. Would you do that to The New York Times or The Wall Street Journal or the Associated Press?” 4:20pm- The Washington Post writes of oral argument in Murthy v. Missouri: “The Supreme Court seems likely to reject a Republican-led effort that could reshape how politicians communicate with major social media companies—with sweeping consequences for government efforts to secure elections and combat health misinformation. A majority of justices from across the ideological spectrum expressed concern about hamstringing federal government communications with social media platforms on issues such as public health, national security and elections. Brian Fletcher, the principal deputy solicitor general of the United States, argued that the government was legally using its bully pulpit to protect the American public. He warned that overly broad limits on the government's communications with tech companies could harm efforts to protect national security or children's mental health.” You can read more about the WaPo assessment of the case here: https://www.washingtonpost.com/technology/2024/03/18/supreme-court-social-media-biden-missouri/ 4:40pm- During oral argument in Murthy v. Missouri, Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson voiced concern that ruling against the federal government in this case could result in “hamstringing” their ability to curate speech online—suggesting that the government has a “duty” to police harmful statements. 4:50pm- Nika Shakhnazarova of The New York Post writes: “A ‘happy, healthy, and relaxed' Kate Middleton and husband Prince William were reportedly spotted visiting a local farm shop over the weekend, but—bizarrely—no photos were captured of the royals during their rumored outing. Onlookers claimed to the Sun that the Prince and Princess of Wales made a stop at a farm shop in Windsor after watching their children, Prince George, 10, Princess Charlotte, 8, and Prince Louis, 5, play sports. And while the rumored sighting may provide some royalists with comfort and a collective sigh of relief that Middleton, 42, is doing well, it also seems to raise more questions than before.” But was it really her??? You can read the full article here: https://nypost.com/2024/03/18/entertainment/kate-middleton-reportedly-visits-farm-shop-with-prince-william-not-photographed/ 5:05pm- Daniel Turner—Founder & Executive Director of Power the Future—joins The Rich Zeoli Show to discuss his latest editorial for Fox News, “Biden Wants 50,000 New Climate Activists and the Consequences will Be Devastating.” Turner writes: “With the national debt racing toward a record $35 trillion, President Joe Biden released his budget proposal Monday, including an eye-popping $8 billion for a ‘Climate Corps' program. Their findings, published in the Scandinavian Journal of Psychology, suggest other Western nations may see similar patterns among their socially conscious citizens. Study author Oskari Lahtinen, a senior researcher at the INVEST Research Flagship Centre at the University of Turku, remarked that the ‘woke' discourse has since worked its way into Finnish discourse.” You can read the full article here: https://nypost.com/2024/03/17/lifestyle/woke-people-more-likely-to-be-unahppy-anxious-and-depressed-new-study-suggests/ 6:30pm- While appearing on MSNBC with Jen Psaki, Democrat strategist James Carville bizarrely claimed that if President Joe Biden does not win reelection in 2024 it will be because of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Israel's ongoing war with Hamas. 6:40pm- Appearing on Fox & Friends, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu responded to Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer's outlandish call for Netanyahu to stepdown—exclaiming “we are not a banana republic.”  6:50pm- While appearing on Meet the Press Now with host Yamiche Alcindor, Congressman Jake Auchincloss (D-MA)—who cosponsored the House bill that could potentially ban TikTok—explained: “So, the first step is ‘ok TikTok you're subject to U.S. law.' Imperfect Heart
Episode 23: Only Days After Unroofing Surgery, 24 Year Old Kaylin Kellert Enthusiastically Shares Her Real Time Experience.

Imperfect Heart

I never imagined that a story of heart surgery could come with a side of laughter and gourmet hospital food. Yet here we are, with Kaylin Kellert, an Air Force veteran who, only a week post sternotomy and unroofing surgery, brings an inspiring tale of self-advocacy, resilience, and a surprising craving for Stanford's vanilla pudding. Kaylin's journey through the confusion of heart attack-like symptoms to the clarity of diagnosis with a myocardial bridge is as enlightening as it is emotional. She highlights the power of community after bonding with her "surgery soulmate" Liane Aigner, both finding solace and support on their concurrent paths to recovery. Kaylin's progress reveals the complexities of navigating the military medical system and the importance of pushing for the care you deserve. Transforming a dire medical narrative into one of hope and humor, this episode isn't just about the trials of surgery but also about embracing the rollercoaster that follows. Kaylin's post-op revelations—from the unexpected delight of hospital dining to the bewilderment of waking up with no memory of the operation or the pleasure of having the chest tube removed—offer a candid look at recovery's unpredictable nature. We share in her moments of disorientation, the astonishingly swift two-and-a-half-hour surgery, all in, and the simple post-surgery comforts that can mean the world. Her positive mindset, the role of faith, and the belief that life's events unfold 'for you'—not 'to you'—are powerful reminders for anyone facing their own battles. Her perspective is that of someone much further along in life experience as her age belies her wisdom and outlook. This is certainly an episode that's as about as unorthodox as a heart patient eagerly anticipating the appeal of their hospital bed. For more information about Imperfect Heart or Myocardial Bridges, visit www.myimperfectheart.com Be sure to join the myocardial bridge support group facebook page as well to see Kaylin's post discussed in the program as well as others going through the same issues we all have been through.

People think feelings determine our behavior. In other words, we don't do the things we don't feel like doing. However, habit formation experts affirm that our identity drives our behaviors, so how we feel is a downstream effect of doing the things in alignment with who we want to become. So, how would you go through your day if you already were the best version of yourself? In today's episode, Michael Balchan shares thought-provoking concepts to help us get closer to our best version. Michael teaches personal growth, positive psychology, peak performance, habit creation, wellness, relationships, and leadership. He is the Chief of Staff and Head Coach at Heroic Public Benefit Corporation and the Head Coach and President of Optimize Enterprises. Michael is also a Harvard graduate; he holds a B.A. in Psychology and Economics. Moved by the ambitious goal to create a world in which 51% of the world's population is flourishing by the year 2051, Michael and Brian Johnson developed the Heroic App based on Brian's knowledge acquired from over 25+ years of reading, studying, and teaching. The app helps us move from theory to practice to mastery, and it covers every aspect of living a fulfilling, healthy, and enthusiastic life. Throughout our conversation, Michael gives examples of how the app works, how it impacted him and his family life, and how to access the path of optimizing every single aspect of our lives.
