Five Democrats compete to face Lawler A lot has changed since the November 2024 general election, when Republican Mike Lawler defeated Democrat Mondaire Jones to win a second, 2-year term representing U.S. House District 17, which includes Philipstown. The Democratic president, Joe Biden, was unpopular, a regular gallon of gas in New York state averaged $3.09, inflation stood at 2.7 percent and 39,000 people were being detained by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, nearly two-thirds of them arrested at the borders with Canada and Mexico. Less than two years later, Republican Donald Trump is the unpopular president, a regular gallon of gas averages $4.38, inflation hit 4.2 percent and 60,000 people were being held by ICE as of April, 85 percent of them arrested at their homes and workplaces, on the street and during routine check-ins with the agency. A Marist poll released in May found that more than half of 1,322 adults surveyed rated their cost of living as "not very affordable" (44 percent) or "not affordable at all" (12 percent); 63 percent did not believe the economy benefited them; and 81 percent felt either a "major" strain on their household budget (33 percent) or a "minor" one (48 percent). Trump's unpopularity, higher gas prices and other costs, and the unpopularity of the conflict with Iran and the president's immigration crackdown are some of the factors bolstering five Democrats competing in a June 23 primary to take on Lawler in November. The district is one of the most scrutinized in the country amid the Democratic Party's efforts to flip the House to its control. The Republicans have a 218-212 majority, with four seats vacant and one independent. Cait Conley has received high-profile endorsements and raised the most campaign funds. A graduate of West Point who earned master's degrees from Harvard and MIT, she spent 16 years on active duty in the U.S. Army before directing counterterrorism for the National Security Council and joining the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA). Both the Dutchess and Putnam Democratic Committees have endorsed her. Beth Davidson has also received notable endorsements, including from the Rockland Democratic Committee, where she is a county Legislator. Davidson, whose fundraising totals are only bested by Conley's, spent two years on the Nyack school board and has held board seats on local organizations such as Leadership Rockland and the Children's Shakespeare Theatre. A third candidate, Effie Phillips-Staley, is serving her third term as a Tarrytown village trustee. She has also held roles as vice president of strategic advancement at the Hispanic Federation in New York City, where she led a fundraising effort that netted more than $30 million for Puerto Rico following Hurricane Maria; executive director of the Foundation for the Public Schools of the Tarrytowns; and director of capital and institutional advancement for The Kitchen, an art space in the city. Questions for Candidates Ahead of the Democratic primary on June 23, we gave each candidate 500 words to answer three questions. Their responses are posted at highlandscurrent.org/house-primary-17. John Cappello and Mike Sacks are the final two candidates. Cappello is an Air Force Academy graduate and bomber pilot who retired from the service and is president of the Halyard Mission Foundation, which commemorates the rescue of more than 500 U.S. airmen from Serbia during World War II. Sacks is a lawyer and journalist who covered law and politics for the MeidasTouch media network and Fox 5 in New York City, where he won an Emmy for his coverage of the protests following the murder of George Floyd by a police officer in Minneapolis. There have been four polls, but each was commissioned by a candidate or supporter, surveyed a relatively small sample and found large swaths of likely voters undecided. It's the sound of community in its purest form.”Pete said it even better in one of his “Johnny Appleseed Jr.” columns in the good old Sing Out! magazine: “You realize that the song is just a vehicle for the affection in the room. It's a way of saying ‘I'm glad you're here' without having to make a formal speech about it. It fills you up and stays with you long after the instruments are put back in their cases.”Jive TalkSuch wordless wordiness is even better defined in the jazz world, where improvisation is the mother tongue. This led to an over-explained, bogged-down narrative that felt like a "walk of shame" rather than an embrace of the IP's strengths. The era's mainstream culture had not fully embraced nerd properties, causing awkward attempts at modernization and distancing. Plot Bloat and Over-Explanation detracted from the movie's pacing and engagement, especially with April O'Neil's bloated and often unconvincing reporter storyline (20:53). Scenes focus too long on generic Michael Bay-style action and April's personal struggles rather than on the turtles themselves. The turtles are introduced late and spend much of the runtime as shadowy figures rather than engaging characters. Convoluted Villain Backstory with Eric Sacks as an unnecessary intermediary between Shredder and the turtles, adding complexity that did not improve the story (01:10:14). Removing or significantly trimming Sacks' role was proposed as a way to streamline the narrative. Mismatch in Tone and Style was evident, with the movie trying to be serious and gritty while relying on CGI-heavy, unrealistic action sequences that lacked tangible physicality (35:42). The film's heavy use of CGI and complex mech suit for Shredder overshadowed traditional martial arts choreography that defines the franchise. Their giant size and bulletproof nature reduced the importance of their ninja skills and made fight scenes less believable. Alan Ritchson's portrayal of Raphael was praised as the best casting and performance in the film. Other turtles like Leonardo and Donatello were underused; Michelangelo was poorly written as an overly sexualized and annoying character. April O'Neil's Role and Writing were criticized for being unconvincing and bloated, with her professional competence and motivations feeling unrealistic and distracting (26:00). The forced "chosen one" connection between April and the turtles was seen as unnecessary and cheapened her acceptance of them. Supporting Characters like Will Arnett's cameraman were noted as relatively decent additions, providing human perspective and some humor without overwhelming the story (48:42). Much of the film occurs in an ambiguous upstate New York mansion and mountain, disconnected from the urban environment central to the turtles' story. This choice limited opportunities to showcase iconic city landmarks and the turtles' connection to their home turf. Visual Style Reflects 2010s Orange-Teal Trend, which while vibrant, was harsh and contributed to a stylized look that did not fit the tone of the movie (16:45). Snowboarding and Chase Sequences were seen as fun and reminiscent of video game-inspired action but felt out of place and disconnected from the turtles' core habitat (48:42). These sequences resembled arcade game levels rather than integrated story moments. Proposed Fixes and Editorial Improvements A major consensus was that the movie could be improved significantly by cutting down excess plot and focusing much earlier and more on the turtles themselves (01:09:02). Streamline April's Story and Cut Eric Sacks to reduce narrative bloat and confusing backstory (01:10:14). Compress April's investigation into one clear sequence, eliminating multiple instances of Foot Clan encounters and confusing plot threads. Remove or minimize Sacks to focus villainy on Shredder and the Foot Clan. Introduce the Turtles Sooner and Add More Teenage Interactions to showcase their personalities and team dynamics earlier in the movie (01:10:14). Incorporate scenes like the elevator banter to emphasize their teenage traits and humor. Sprinkle in more Foot Clan fights to build suspense and showcase ninja action throughout. Focus on Making the Final Third Action-Packed but Clear, allowing the action sequences to flow without unnecessary interruptions (01:10:14). Keep the fight choreography that works, such as the Shredder vs. Splinter sequence, while trimming excess. Possible Reshoots or Edits to downplay or rework problematic story elements like April's "chosen one" status and the lab origin flashbacks (01:19:47). Use existing footage more efficiently to maintain story coherence while trimming excess. Emphasize Fun and Character Chemistry earlier to avoid the film feeling "all tension" and "boring" (01:15:07). Super Bowl Eve Spotlight: Why Max Crosby On Super Bowl eve, the Detroit Lions Podcast zeroed in on Max Crosby as the most polarizing offseason swing. The chatter is not just in Detroit. The Bengals, Cowboys, Patriots, and Falcons have all been mentioned as alleged suitors. Crosby is 28, from Lapeer, Michigan, and came out of Eastern Michigan. He wins with power to speed, has some bend, and never stops. He is comfortable standing up, but he is better with his hand in the dirt. The case is rooted in run defense. The show framed Crosby as the best run-defending edge in football among the elite pass rushers. He owns two of the top ten seasons in NFL history for tackles for loss, in 2022 and 2023. That production sets an edge and closes lanes. It also travels to January. Sacks, TFLs, and Reality Check Crosby's sack totals do not always match his reputation. He had 10 this past season. He posted 7.5 in only 12 games in 2024. His peak was 14.5 in 2023, when he earned first-team All-Pro and piled up 23 tackles for loss. The Raiders have not consistently fielded another threatening rusher opposite him, which has amplified his workload and attention. That profile matters for the Detroit Lions. Pair Crosby with Aidan Hutchinson and Alim McNeill. Add Tyreek Williams, who quietly played well down the stretch, with Jack Campbell behind them. That front four controls tempo. It lets a defense rush with four, squeeze gaps, and dictate drives. The show pointed to the Houston Texans as proof of concept, noting how they almost never blitzed and still dominated both of their playoff games. Turnovers, not defense, flipped those outcomes. The All-In Price Tag There is a catch. Acquisition cost and opportunity cost headline the downside. This is an all-in move. The hypothetical package discussed mirrored the price “Green Bay” paid to get Micah Parsons: two firsts and a third. In this scenario, the Lions send their first this year and next, plus next year's third because they do not have a third this year. To balance that, the Raiders send back their pick at the top of the second round this year, sliding Detroit from pick 17 to around 33 or 34. The Lions would still keep their own second. A 2025 fourth this year may need to be added to make the math work. The upside is obvious. Crosby beside Hutchinson could make the Detroit Lions the NFC North favorite and a top seed contender. The risk is just as clear. Two firsts and more means fewer swings at premium talent, fewer cheap starters, and less flexibility if injuries hit. The debate is simple. In late 1916, while treating a group of patients at his psychiatric clinic at the University of Vienna, Dr. Constantin von Economo began noticing the appearance of strange symptoms that he could not account for. At the same time, in France, Rene Cruchet began noticing similarly strange and unexpected symptoms in his patients. Though the two men had never met and knew nothing of one another's patients, they would come to learn they were both witnessing the emergence of a new mysterious disease that would soon affect millions of people around the world.The illnesses documented by von Economo and Cruchet would eventually come to be know as encephalitis lethargica, or sleeping sickness, a strange condition that caused profound lethargy, hypersomnia, and a wide range of other frightening symptoms. Between 1919 and the early 1930s, millions of people all around the world contracted the illness, with nearly half of all cases resulting in death, and many more suffering long-term effects; yet a cause of the illness has never been established and the terrifying epidemic appears to have faded from memory not long after the disease itself ostensibly disappeared. ReferencesBrook, Harry Ellington. 1921.
