This episode concludes our series “The Open Doctor and His Monster,” which chronicles the origins, rise, and end of the Robert Trent Jones era in golf. Today, we tell the story of the movement that challenged Jones's ideas and revived the reputations of Donald Ross and other golf architects of the “Golden Age.” Ultimately, this movement led to a battle of ideas at Oakland Hills Country Club, where Jones had initially established his reputation as the “Open Doctor” in 1950. Our guests in this episode are Richard Howting, Bradley Klein (@BradleySKlein), Gil Hanse, and Robert Trent Jones Jr. Further reading: Bradley Klein, Discovering Donald Ross Geoffrey Cornish and Ron Whitten, The Golf Course

The topic is bunkers: should they be placed scientifically or randomly? Should there be more or less, or any at all? Has the naturalistic look become ubiquitous and overused? What about proper bunker depth? Are liners a waste of money? And are bunker still the hazards they once were, have they lost their importance, and… Read More Read More The post Feed the Ball Salon Vol. 19: Bunkers ft. Golfweek Rater host Jim Hansen chats with John Strawn. Strawn is currently a founding principal at Strawn & Sampson, partnering with best-selling author Curt Sampson to research, write, design and print high-end golf course and golf club histories.  His most recent book, Creating Calusa Pines, narrated the origin story of a Top 100 course in Naples, FL designed by Mike Hurdzan and Dana Fry.  Golf Digest's Ron Whitten called Creating Calusa Pines "a hefty volume that belongs on the bookshelf of every golfer who has even a passing interest in golf course architecture. This club history is almost as fascinating as the golf course itself.” Writing the Calusa Pines book was a return to Strawn's roots as a writer after three decades working in golf course architecture.  His first golf book, Driving the Green(HarperCollins, 1991) chronicled the creation of an Arthur Hills course in West Palm Beach, FL.  Soon after its publication, Hills invited Strawn to join his firm. Strawn ran Hills' west coast office until 2000, when he joined Robert Trent Jones II, serving as its CEO for eight years.  During that time, RTJ II created some of the finest courses in its distinguished history, culminating in Chambers Bay, the first Pacific Northwest course to host a US Open. In addition to his work with Strawn & Sampson, Strawn keeps his hand in golf design, most prominently as a member of the team which has restored Gearhart Golf Links, the oldest course in the western United States.

There are dozens of players on tour who can do exactly what Martin did. His 3rd year on Tour after playing golf at Clemson University.  Kevin Streelman made a great late charge to try and take the tournament from Martin but wasn't able to repeat his feat at The Hartford earlier in the year. Holly asks Bob about the news that Tiger is now hitting full shots recently. Getting ready for the World Championships in December. Tiger has seemed to enjoy his down time healing from this injury. Family time and golf course design, etc.  Rich B asks Bob about who Tiger's next coach will be. Bob doesn't think he will have a coach any time soon and that may not be a bad thing. Bob said that with all of Tiger's knowledge of the game and the swing that he could be by himself for a while.  Holly asks Bob about his article on the post Ryder Cup fallout. Holly talked about Jose Maria Olazabal taking the team to task in Medinah after the first day of competition. Not everyone on every team gets along with the captain of the team no matter what country they are playing for them. Holly asks Bob about Paul Azinger and his involvement of the Task Force to fixing the Ryder Cup woes of the United States. Bob also mentions that if Azinger is going to be the captain why would he be on the task force? Ron Whitten, Golf Digest, calls in to talk to Holly and Rich about news about the best new courses around the globe. When the housing market plunged, there was not as many being built.  The Best New Courses for 2014: A Celebration of Fun. The top course is a David McLay Kidd designed course, Gamble Sands in Brewster Washington. The original Bandon Dunes was his first design in 1994. Then he developed a local following and then designed courses all over the globe. He fell in love with his own image and designed more and more difficult courses because he thought that was what architects were supposed to do. Then he realized at the age of 50 that play ability and fun are more important for the game.  Holly talks about two new 18 hole courses in Florida designed by Chris Wilczynski. One is the Esplande Golf and Country Club of Naples. Both courses are currently open to the public as the developer sells lots and houses to residents with golf memberships. Holly also talks about a reversible design golf course by Tom Doaks, Forest Dunes. Play clockwise one day then play counterclockwise the next day to play two different courses.
