This week we talk about the life and legacy of Neil Armstrong and the Apollo 11 mission. Joining us is Jim Hansen, who wrote the book First Man and served as a consultant on the film, along with HATM space expert Kevin Rusnak. We talk about the Armstrong's inward journey into outer space, his relationships with his fellow astronauts, and the role his wife Janet played in Armstrong's journey. We also get some inside details on the making of the film, including Ryan Gosling and Damien Chazelle's work to get this movie made. This is a podcast on NASA, Neil Armstrong, and an absolutely brilliant film unlike any you've heard before.About our guests:James R. Hansen is a professor emeritus of history at Auburn University. A former historian for NASA, Hansen is the author of twelve books on the history of aerospace and a two-time nominee for the Pulitzer Prize in History. His 1995 book Spaceflight Revolution was nominated for the Pulitzer by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, the only time NASA ever nominated a book for the prize. He serves as coproducer for the motion picture First Man, which is based on his New York Times bestselling biography of Neil Armstrong. Kevin J. Rusnak is the Chief Historian of the Air Force Life Cycle Management Center History Office, located at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, in Dayton, Ohio.  He is responsible for leading the professional research, collection, preservation, analysis, writing, and dissemination of AFLCMC's history and heritage to the organization's leadership and workforce, as well as to a public audience.Mr. Rusnak graduated with a degree in History from the University of Dayton, Ohio, in 1995, and subsequently entered the History of Technology graduate program at the Georgia Institute of Technology, Atlanta, Georgia.  His thesis focused on the production of B-29 bombers in Marietta, Georgia, during World War II, while his dissertation explored the development of Air Force and NASA pressure suits and space suits from the 1930s through the 1960s.  He spent over four years as a historian at the NASA Lyndon B. Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas, where he researched and interviewed dozens of pioneering engineers, managers, and astronauts from the early years of human spaceflight.Mr. Rusnak joined the Air Force History and Museums program in 2002 as the Senior Historian for the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) at Wright-Patterson AFB.  Over the next 18 years, he researched and wrote numerous annual histories, biographies, reports, heritage products, and special studies.  In 2017, he was the primary author for AFRL's award-winning 100-year history compendium, Aiming Higher: A Century of Research in Science and Technology by the Air Force Research Laboratory and its Predecessors, as well as for its companion photo essay volume.  He also pioneered AFRL's leveraging of history on modern platforms, such as social media, to provide a broader audience with access to AFRL's significant legacy.

Jim HansenHe was born in Pensacola, Florida in 1965 and raised in a military family. By the time he graduated from high school in 1983 in Newport News, Virginia, he had attended 9 different elementary and secondary schools. He can legitimately say he has lived in Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, Virginia, Washington D.C., New York, Germany and now Maryland. Until he moved to the Washington metro area in 1989, he had never lived in one town/city for more than 3 years.  Travel and anything international have always been a significant part of his life. He grew up with a German grandmother who taught high school social studies when she wasn't traveling the world. His grandfather was in the American military and stationed in Turkey in the 1950s and Iran in the 1960s. That fueled his grandmother's love of the far and near east and that was transmitted to him via the slides she would show him when he stayed at her house and all the Asian artifacts that filled her home. She literally traveled the entire Silk Road except Afghanistan.  By the time he graduated college, he had already been to Europe and Asia. His career choices seemed to boil down to either international relations the hospitality industry, or a mix of the two.Luck and chance led him to a career in the Federal Government where he's been for 33 years. Approximately 23 of those years have been spent doing international work. The remainder has been in high-level management positions. His work has allowed him to travel to Europe, South America, and Asia multiple times. Between work and his own passion for travel, he's a member of the 6 continents club (with only Antarctica being the one that got away). His passion for travel continues in retirement. He's a big believer in life lists (NOT bucket lists). His generally contains places he'd love to visit. He's been very lucky in that he's hit so many places but there are still more to see. Right now, that includes New Zealand, India, South Africa, Costa Rica, Poland, and all the countries of the former Yugoslavia. He's very fortunate to have a partner of 29 years who also loves to travel. Ultimately, it's a compromise. We trade off in picking places to visit. Next stop? Probably Greece because he hasn't been (I've been twice). His next stop? Either India or New Zealand. The Washington metropolitan area, also sometimes referred to as Greater Washington, the National Capital Region, or colloquially as the DMV (named after the District of Columbia, Maryland, and Virginia), is the metropolitan area containing Washington, D.C., the federal capital of the United States. In this ClimateGenn special episode, I publishing my first interview with Dr Jim Hansen who was at the time Director of NASA's Goddard Institute for Space Studies. This was recorded in 2012 at the European Geophysical Union, the annual conference that takes place every year in Vienna. Please support at https://patreon.com/genncc or follow on https://genn.cc. In recent weeks I have exchanged emails again with Dr Hansen to discuss his recent work that has a working title of ‘The Big Climate Short'. Hopefully this will be recorded once his latest work is submitted for publication. What strikes me about this decade old interview is that the language is so clear and the warnings regarding urgent action are in the timeframe of the next 1-1.5years. He even states the danger of waiting a decade to what would be 2022. Hansen made international news in the late 80's when he testified to US Congress about the need to change our energy system and reduce atmospheric greenhouse gases. He is straight pragmatic speaker who has consistently issued warnings that have been ignored despite the rising cost inflicted by such ignorance. Here he gives very clear definitions of what tipping points are and the danger of crossing them. He discusses the challenges that scientists face in communicating these problems. He also highlights evidenced strategies that could have significantly dealt with them at the time but with each passing year create an ever growing challenge. We are now where we are. The recent IPCC report talks about the closing window of opportunity to act. Coming at a time of extreme chaos and suffering in Europe, it is hard to see how we will navigate the coming weeks, months and years. How we deal with our own fear and concern regarding these issues is very important. War is obviously not the answer and neither is any sense of nihilism. Being able to focus on the problems and act with a broader sense of community is far more rewarding. In the next episode I am speaking to climate and policy analyst, David Spratt, Research Director at the Breakthrough National Centre for Climate Restoration in Melbourne, Australia. We will be discussing a range of subjects including the accelerating rate of impacts, what climate models don't tell us, as well as the tipping point risks we can't see or measure and that may already have been crossed. Thank you for listening to ClimateGenn. I have many more episodes to produce so please do subscribe. Thank you to all who are supporting the channel via Patreon. This club history is almost as fascinating as the golf course itself.” Writing the Calusa Pines book was a return to Strawn's roots as a writer after three decades working in golf course architecture.  His first golf book, Driving the Green(HarperCollins, 1991) chronicled the creation of an Arthur Hills course in West Palm Beach, FL.  Soon after its publication, Hills invited Strawn to join his firm. Strawn ran Hills' west coast office until 2000, when he joined Robert Trent Jones II, serving as its CEO for eight years.  During that time, RTJ II created some of the finest courses in its distinguished history, culminating in Chambers Bay, the first Pacific Northwest course to host a US Open. In addition to his work with Strawn & Sampson, Strawn keeps his hand in golf design, most prominently as a member of the team which has restored Gearhart Golf Links, the oldest course in the western United States.

Michael Joseph Farrell was born on February 6, 1939 in St. Paul, Minnesota. At the age of 2 a move to Hollywood, where his father's work as a studio carpenter provided young Mike's first glimpse of the world behind the studio walls, began his fascination with the "movies, one he has never fully lost. After graduating from Hollywood High and a hitch in the Marines, he worked a number of jobs - including a stint as private investigator - while pursuing a career as an actor, beginning with small parts in films like "The Graduate" and "The Americanization of Emily". Stage roles and small parts on TV eventually landed him in the soap "Days of Our Lives", where he starred as Scott Banning for two years. "Days" was followed by leading roles in two series, "The Interns" and "The Man and The City," then a four-year contract with Universal Pictures. Mike is best known for playing Captain B.J. His eight years with the memorable show allowed the opportunity to both write and direct several episodes, earning him nominations for Director's Guild and Emmy Awards. From climate change to smoking and cancer, this is the story of how doubt has been manufactured. In this episode we take you to an oil company’s boardroom as they plan their response to the ‘crisis mentality’ that was emerging after the long hot summer of 1988. 5,000 people died in the heat wave, coinciding with the moment NASA scientist Jim Hansen announced that a ‘greenhouse effect’ was ‘changing our climate now’. This looked like a battle for the survival of the oil industry. This 10 part series explores how powerful interests and sharp PR managers engineered doubt about the connection between smoking and cancer and how similar tactics were later used by some to make us doubt climate change. With the help of once-secret internal memos, we take you behind boardroom doors where such strategies were drawn up and explore how the narrative changed on one of the most important stories of our time - and how the marketing of doubt has undermined our willingness to believe almost everything. Produced at KSQD 90.7FM Mainstream news media outlets have been slow to recognize and report on the climate and other ecological systems collapse. Is it out of ignorance, arrogance or both? In the vacuum, disinformation campaigns have filled the void, “fueled” by right wing media and oil industry money. More than 90% of radio hosts are conservative. This is a big part of the denialism in our country. Has the news media abandoned the climate and other environmental threats while doing the opposite with the coronavirus? The common denominators in both crises are: 1) Deadly global threat, no one is exempt, 2) Information and action can thwart or slow spread, 3) Personal actions have a public impact, 4) Requires national and international cooperation to reduce threat, 5) Requires some individual and societal sacrifice but benefit outweighs risk (suffering and death). What corporate news organizations choose to focus on determines what the public is focused upon and this narrow-vision contributes to ignorance, avoidance, and lack of response. This failure has been key in the lack of national response thus worsening the climate crisis during critical years. Media managers don't see it as their duty to provide solutions. So, whose responsibility IS it? What could possibly go wrong? Interview Guests: Betsy Rosenberg's broadcast career in television began working for ABC Sports for the Olympics and then working, for two decades, in radio as a reporter and anchor with CBS News. Later, she created, hosted, and produced “EcoTalk” heard on the Air America radio network attracting an audience of 50,000 and becoming the first daily green show in broadcast history. During its ten-year run, Betsy interviewed hundreds of eco-leaders in science, politics, culture, business, tech, arts and activism - from Al Gore and Bernie Sanders to Drs. Jim Hansen and Katherine Hayhoe to CEO's from all the pioneering green companies. Betsy blazed a trail in the field of environmental and climate journalism. She has written for Huffington Post and Medium.com, often about the media's failure to cover climate change, and is a contributing chapter author in Climate Abandoned: We're on the Endangered Species List, a #1 Amazon bestseller. Dr. Richard Nolthenius is Astronomy Program Chair at Cabrillo College in Santa Cruz, CA. Dr. Nolthenius specializes in Mathematics, Aerospace Thermodynamics, Applied Physics, and Astronomy. In the past 10 years, Richard added climate science to his expertise, teaching a comprehensive course – Astro 7 - in Climate Science and its civilization context. By examining the climate science problem and searching for solutions, he has found it connected fundamentally to everything – from physics and evolutionary biology, to psychology, to economics and politics, to the thermodynamics of complex dynamical systems, and even the “strange attractors” of Chaos Theory. Solutions are not going to come from techno-wizardry, nor from politicians on the horizon today, nor from anyone mired in our current paradigms. Jim Hansen, along with Pastor Bob Coughlin, Director of Men's Ministry at Grace Church, Eden Prairie, Minnesota, helps us understand the Godly role of a man, how they can be a Godly man, and how they can lead as a Godly man.Jim Hansen, CEO of EngageSDG, has been concerned about the lack of teaching on issues of morality and how it is affecting society. As the culture we live in continues to grow further and further away from God, it is essential that Christians are better trained on how to talk about difficult questions. In "Welcome to Pleistocene Park", Ross writes about Pleistocene Park, a reserve in Siberia that aims to stave off climate change by attempting to recreate the conditions of the Pleistocene, turning the reserve into a grassland steppe ecosystem by importing large herbivores. The Eighth Amendment protects people from cruel and unusual punishments in the United States but what does that mean? In the last 38 years, Americans used hangings, gas chambers, lethal injections, electrocutions, and firing squads to execute convicted murderers. Given the recent reports of botched lethal injections, some experts are calling for the return of the firing squad as the most humane form of capital punishment. On this episode of Lawyer 2 Lawyer, host J. Craig Williams interviews Judge Alex Kozinski from the United States Court of Appeals for The Ninth Circuit, exonerated death row survivor Ronald Keine from Witness to Innocence, and M*A*S*H actor Mike Farrell from Death Penalty Focus. Together they discuss the merits of firing squads vs. lethal injections, corruption in the judicial system, and the morality of western society. Tune in to hear about the 144 exonerated death row survivors as well as Ronald Keine's near miss with the gas chamber. Judge Alex Kozinski sits on the bench of the United States Court of Appeals for The Ninth Circuit where he's served since his appointment on November 7th 1985. Prior to his appointment Judge Kozinski occupied other prestigious positions including Chief Judge of the US Claims Court and Office of Counsel to the President. He is married with three children plus three grandchildren. Ronald Keine is an exonerated death row inmate who was just 9 days from his execution in the gas chamber when the actual murderer confessed to the crime. Today, he an Assistant Director of Membership and Training for Witness to Innocence an anti-death penalty organization whose leading voice is that of exonerated death row survivors. Mike Farrell played Captain BJ Hunnicut for eight years on the hit television show M*A*S*H as well other roles like Jim Hansen in another series called Providence. In the 90s, he served for three years as a member of the State of California's Commission on Judicial Performance. Mr. Farrell is a life-long opponent of the death penalty and has been the President of Death Penalty Focus since 1994. Special thanks to our sponsor, Clio.
