In the 3rd episode of The Caddy Series, it was a pleasure to be joined by LPGA Tour, Solheim & Ryder Cup pro caddy Jack Clarke as he phones from home in Florida after a busy 2024 season on the bag with the legendary Anna Nordqvist in a season which saw Jack on the bag for the Majors as well as being at Solheim Cup in Virginia (Anna's 9th) in an event that Jack and now wife Swedish star Madelene Sagström famously had their mini 'honeymoon' and actually got paired together in the same session as Anna/Madelene teamed up together! Jack kindly offers his advice on the expertise of being a Professional caddy! Jack was a fine player in his own right winning Amateur events and turned Professional at 18 years old where he would achieve a Challenge Tour Tour card in 2013/14 before a sad run of injuries hindered his player career and had to give it up at 27 years old! We learn about Jack's experiences as a player! In late 2017 Jack got a call from Gemma Dryburgh to perhaps caddy for Gemma on the LET in which he accepted and would go on to caddy for European Solheim Cup star Caroline Hedwall which included be on her bag at 2019 Solheim Cup at Gleneagles where Suzann Pettersen famously sunk the winning putt to beat the US. Jack has caddied in 3 Solheim Cups & 2023 Ryder Cup in Rome only losing the once which was this year's Solheim Cup at Robert Trent Jones. He would be on the bag at 2021 Solheim in Toledo for partner Madelene Sagström, be on the bag for the superstar Ludvig Aberg in Rome where Ludvig & Hovland famously defeated Koepka & Scheffler 9&7 and was on the bag with Anna Nordqvist this year. 2023 was a great year for Jack with getting the bag of the promising talent Ludvig Aberg and was able to share alongside 2023 Ryder Cup win also 2 individual wins together at Crans Montana for Omega European Masters and a stunning victory by Ludvig at RSM Classic on PGA Tour. We find out just what makes Ludvig Aberg so good! I had a great chat with Jack about all things Golf and he comes across as a really likeable guy while also being a well respected figure as a good caddy! I hope you enjoyed it! On this week's show, I'm joined by the great Tom Patri, 9-time winner between the PGA & Champions Tours Tom Purtzer, the Pittsburgh Field Club's Head Golf Professional Chris Sheehan, and the Curator of History at Oakmont and Allegheny Country Club, David Moore. TP and I go back to his 1981 D2 National Championship while he was at Florida Southern. We hear about the penalty levied on him and his team in 1980 that cost them the National Championship and how they used that to fuel them to win it the next year. Tom shares some advice for kids and their parents looking to play college golf and he talks about the great player that Andy Bean was. We lost Andy a couple of days ago. Tom Purtzer won 9 times between the PGA & Champions Tours. One of the many amazing things about his accomplishments is that he won tournaments over the course of 3 different decades, winning in 1977, '84, '88, and '91. We get into one of his professional wins not on the PGA Tour, a 10-stroke victory at the 1979 Japan vs. USA Golf Matches. He also takes us inside his conversation with Ben Hogan at the Champions Dinner prior to the Colonial National Invitational. Chris Sheehan is the Head Professional at the Pittsburgh Field Club. Chris has worked at some of the most prestigious courses in our country like Oak Hill, Inverness, and Lebanon Country Club. Along his golf journey, he got to work with Bill and Craig Harmon. Chris and I get into the rich history of PFC. The club is 142 years old and beginning preparation for their 150th anniversary in 2032. We hear about Alexander Findlay's original course design plus the Hall of Fame Designers who have tinkered with the course over the years like A.W. Tillinghast, Donald Ross, Robert Trent Jones, and Tripp Davis. We also hear the tale of the 18th hole which was transformed from a 275-yard Par 4 into a Par 3 after a few members died climbing up the steep elevation change from the tee to the green. David Moore is the Curator of Collections at Oakmont and Allegheny Country Clubs. David tells some fantastic Arnold Palmer stories that give great insight into who Mr. Palmer was. We go way back and hear the history behind the first 25 years at Oakmont. He also shares his insights on the origin of the Stimpmeter, the Golf Heritage Society's National Convention, the work he did at Montclair Golf Club in New Jersey, and an inexpensive DIY project to display your autographed golf balls.
COME EXPERIENCE A GEMThe Royal Ka'anapali Course is one of only two courses in all of Hawaii designed by Robert Trent Jones, Sr. The architect took advantage of the rolling landscape to create gently sloping fairways and large contoured greens to ensure a challenging approach to each hole. Stretching 6,700 yards, this par 71 course will challenge your club selection and putting skills. The Royal Ka'anapali Course begins at sea level with a par 5 hole extending 550 yards. The course hugs the shoreline before winding its way to the West Maui Mountain foothills. Arnold Palmer called the 18th hole (par 4) one of the best and most challenging finishing holes he'd ever played. The 449-yard hole plays longer than it looks, hugging the brackish water canal the entire length of the fairway and green, making it a memorable last hole. You become a part of this beautiful history as you make your way around our playground. Breathtaking views from our sloping vistas reveal the islands of Lanai and Molokai in the distance. The tropical tradewinds will keep you cool during your round, and rainbows you will see remind you that our home is a special place. As you journey through the Royal Course, notice the historical plaques on each tee, sharing our history and stories of Kā'anapali. We also talk about some of his other great designs like Haig Point, Victory Ranch, Lake Isles, Echelon Golf Club, and Brian Harman's home course, Southbridge Golf Club in Savannah. Rees also takes us through how the picks out the plot of land he wants to use for new courses, the process he uses to determine the path of the course, and how he keeps both the skill level of the membership and average golfers in mind as he lays out the course. Dr. Alison Curdt earned her doctorate in Sports Psychology. She is one of only a few Instructors who have reached Master Professional status on both the LPGA and PGA sides of Instruction. We talk about getting past the ingrained bad feeling we get every time we play that one hole that always seems to ruin our rounds. We also discuss getting away from all the negative self-talk we do plus tips for shifting our weight, getting out of a greenside bunker, and stabilizing our wrists during our putting stroke. Cindy Miller was the 2010 LPGA National Teacher of the Year. She is also an expert in improving our mental game. We hear about her alter ego Cynthia and how to quiet her negative voice. We also learn that Brian Harman used to wrestle alligators, plus get a tip for how to make consistent, clean contact. Dave Stockton Jr. shares his thoughts on the PIF/PGA Tour merger and Jay Monahan's future. Dave was an Assistant Captain when his father captained the US team in 1991. He shares his insights on what that was like and who he thinks should be on this year's team. He also says I'm not imagining things when I'm seeing Tour pros striking their putts on the upswing or follow through versus the center of the putter face.

In its April issue, Club + Resort Business released its annual rankings of the top fitness and wellness centers. The fitness and wellness facility at Addison Reserve Country Club in Delray Beach, Fla. earned the No. 1 ranking in C+RB's recognition program. In this episode of Club + Resort Talks, C+RB Senior Editor Phil Keren spoke with Anthony Biondolillo, the club's Assistant General Manager, and Grant Worthington, the facility's Director Sports Operations, to learn more about Addison Reserve Country Club. Biondolillo and Worthington expressed their appreciation for receiving this honor, discussed what their fitness and wellness center offers that makes it stand out from similar facilities, and shared information about upcoming improvements at the club. In addition to an informative conversation with Biondolillo and Worthington, Phil also spoke with Club + Resort Business Editor Rob Thomas about some of the latest news stories happening in the industry. Phil and Rob discussed two stories showcasing golf courses' increasing efforts to be more environmentally conscious: Greenway Golf Associates this past week announced they entered a partnership with with master architect Robert Trent Jones, Jr., and his golf course design company, Robert Trent Jones II Golf Course Architects (RTJII), to renovate the North Course at Corica Park in Alameda, Calif. Greenway selected Robert Jones Golf Course Architects because of the company's world-renowned expertise and environmental leadership in golf course design. Leisure World Golf Course in Silver Spring, Md. this week achieved Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary Program for Golf Courses (ACSP for Golf) certification. Christine Kane, CEO at Audubon International, says that to earn this certification, golf courses must “demonstrate that they are maintaining a high degree of environmental quality in a number of areas.” Leisure World's accomplishments included: expanding native vegetation; removing invasive plant species; providing quality wildlife habitat; and conducting water quality testing. Frank McLaughlin, Golf Superintendent, and Alan Nelson, Golf and Greens Committee Certification Project Manager, led the effort. Meanwhile, a course in California is still working to recover from a major weather event last month. In March, there were a couple of heavy storms that wiped out six holes at River Island Country Club in Porterville, Calif. Holes 10, 16, 17 and 18 are severely damaged and 11 and 12 are beyond repair and need to be completely rebuilt. Terry Treece, the club's General Manager, said he is going to be meeting with an architect and a construction company on the course. He says he thinks the total damages will cost a few million dollars, but he hopes his estimate is on the high side. Read more at www.clubandresortbusiness.com.

This episode concludes our series “The Open Doctor and His Monster,” which chronicles the origins, rise, and end of the Robert Trent Jones era in golf. Today, we tell the story of the movement that challenged Jones's ideas and revived the reputations of Donald Ross and other golf architects of the “Golden Age.” Ultimately, this movement led to a battle of ideas at Oakland Hills Country Club, where Jones had initially established his reputation as the “Open Doctor” in 1950. Our guests in this episode are Richard Howting, Bradley Klein (@BradleySKlein), Gil Hanse, and Robert Trent Jones Jr. Further reading: Bradley Klein, Discovering Donald Ross Geoffrey Cornish and Ron Whitten, The Golf Course
In this second installment of our documentary series “The Open Doctor and His Monster,” we focus on the 1951 U.S. Open, in which Ben Hogan did battle with Robert Trent Jones's modern architecture at Oakland Hills Country Club. Our guests in this episode are Ed Gruver (@EdGruver), Richard Howting, James Hansen, Robert Trent Jones Jr., and Bradley Klein (@BradleySKlein). Further reading: Ed Gruver, Bringing the Monster to Its Knees: Ben Hogan, Oakland Hills, and the 1951 U.S. Open Richard Howting, “Defining Moment: The 1951 U.S. Open” Bradley Klein, “Forever in Tweed, Amen: Herbert Warren Wind's contributions to golf know no word count” in The Golfer's Journal No. 13
Today, we kick off a three-part documentary series called “The Open Doctor and His Monster,” in which we chronicle the Robert Trent Jones era in golf: its origins in Rochester, New York; its breakthrough moment at Oakland Hills Country Club; and its recent fall from favor. Our guests in this episode are Robert Trent Jones Jr., James Hansen, Richard Howting, and Bradley Klein (@BradleySKlein). In this episode of the TurfNet Renovation Report, host Anthony Pioppi chats with Jim Barrett of James Barrett Associates, noted golf course irrigation designer and consultant. There are also few in the industry more respected. Irrigation designers fly well under the radar that puts golf course architects in the spotlight, but the job they do is no less critical to a well-functioning golf course operation. Listen in as Jim tells us his story and discusses the state of golf course irrigation today and into the future. Presented by Golf Preservations and The Andersons.

On this editon of Next on the Tee my guests are: world renowned golf course designer Rees Jones; Founder of the Ben Hogan Golf Company and master club designer, Terry Koehler; and Allen Edmonds CEO Paul Grangaard. Rees Jones - Rees talked about the relationship between his father Robert Trent Jones and Bobby Jones. Though they aren't related they did work together on Augusta National and other courses around Atlanta. Rees also shared stories about some of the over 225 courses he's either designed or reconstructed including a couple of new ones getting lots of attention and praise. We also talked about how advances in equipment technology has impacted how he lays out and designs courses, how he goes about trying to keep maintenance costs low and a new computer device that tracks where players hit the ball on the course that could revolutionize the game. Terry Koehler - Terry talked about how he broke into the golf club design business back on the '80s with his Destiny putter that quickly started being was used by 30 Tour players. He also talked about his fantastic (my word for it) V sole wedge design that can help golfers hit better, more consistent shots from any lie. He told the story about the time he met Ben Hogan, why the Ben Hogan company and any small golf equipment company struggles to compete with the big boys, and much more... Paul Grangaard - Paul talked about their wonderful line of golf shoes, some created in collaboration with Jack Nicklaus. He also walked us through some of the dress and casual shoes which are designed to last 20-30 years vs. shoes you buy everywhere else that last 1-2 years. We also talked about their wonderful discount program for military members, first responders and students, so they can have great shoes as they transition back to civilian life or go for interviews after graduation.

In the third segment, Ted Johnson a journalist who lives in California and also blogs for The Golf Insiders, calls in to fill listeners in on what is on tap for the Safeway Open and Tiger Woods not playing in that event. Ted wanted to know what happened in three days. From the time Tiger committed to the event until the day he withdrew. There are a lot of really good golfers competing in the Safeway. Does it make him scared or does it make him smart? The event was big news and people bought tickets to the event who would not have and now are disappointed that they won't see Tiger. The course requires accuracy off the tee and that is something that Tiger hasn't been that consistent with of late. The course is flat and somewhat tight and not that wide. Ted said keeping it in the fairway is very important playing this Robert Trent Jones course. Holly asks Ted why Tiger may not have chosen to compete in one of the five other PGA Tour events in the wrap around season and instead waiting until the Hero World Challenge at the end of the year. Ted feel that Tiger wants to protect his confidence. Ted says that there are about 40 players in the field that could win the Safeway and that compared to a few years ago when there were a core of 5-10 players dominated the Tour.

Mountains, rivers, and beaches challenge golfers who play Alabama's extensive trail of championship golf courses designed by eminent American golf course architect Robert Trent Jones, Sr. Join us as James R. Hansen presents “The Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail.” This ArchiTreats: Food for Thought presentation was held at the Alabama Department of Archives and History. This array of courses built since the late 1980s at 11 sites across the state are part of a massive financial investment and economic development project sponsored by the Retirement Systems of Alabama. Hansen will discuss the Trail courses as reflections of Jones' personal philosophy, and review the extraordinary golf courses that are as demanding as they are picturesque. Hansen is Professor of History and director of the Honors College at Auburn University. An expert in aerospace history for the past 26 years, he has written books and articles about the history of science and technology. His most recent book, First Man (Simon & Schuster, 2005), the first and only authorized biography of Neil Armstrong, first man on the moon, has won numerous awards. Although most of his scholarly work has dealt with aerospace history, Hansen has also made his mark on the field of golf course history. He is currently working on the authorized biography of Robert Trent Jones, as well as a book on golf in Alabama. This ArchiTreats presentation is one in a series of monthly third-Thursday free lectures presented by the Alabama Department of Archives and History. During Mike's Course - Mike and Billy discuss Billy's trip to Virginia CC and Billy's new workout regiment while on the golf course. Since focusing her skills as a landscape painter to recreate some of the world's most beautiful golf holes, Linda Hartough has become recognized as one of golf's leading artists. So extraordinary and realistic is her attention to detail that her oil paintings seem to come alive with a clarity that surpasses the camera. Her work has gained international fame. She is the only artist ever commissioned by the United States Golf Association and the Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St. Andrews to do the annual, official paintings and prints for the U.S. Open and British Open Championships. She has painted prestigious golf courses from the U.S. to Scotland to Hong Kong. Her paintings are so admired that they have earned a place on two ABC Television Golf Specials on famous golf holes hosted by Jack Nicklaus. Her paintings are in the collections of such famous clubs as Augusta National, Pine Valley and Laurel Valley. Hartough originals are also included in the private collections of Jack Nicklaus, Robert Trent Jones and Rees Jones. Linda Hartough calls into the show - a confirmed artist since the age of six, Linda was raised in the picturesque country sides of Wilmington, Delaware and Louisville, Kentucky. Much of her early career was spent in Chicago where, after receiving her Fine Arts degree from the prestigious School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 1970, she made a living by selling her paintings locally. In 1980, Linda moved to South Carolina near Hilton Head where, she painted landscapes, portraits and horses. In 1984, Augusta National Golf Club commissioned her to paint the famed 13th hole, thus beginning her golf landscape career. After an enormous response to her work at the 1988 PGA Show in Orlando, Linda focused her career entirely on golf landscapes. Since that time, Linda's work has enjoyed unparalleled status in the golf world, while receiving international acclaim including Golf Digest's "Lifetime Achievement Award." Linda is privileged to be a Founding Trustee of the Academy of Golf Art, a professional society of golf artists established in 2004 to create an awareness and appreciation of golf art as a valuable segment of fine art. Linda's approach to capturing a great golf hole is by spending a week or more at each course, taking photographs at different times of the day to capture all possible lights. She then figures out what is important or memorable in each view of a hole and makes sure this is included in the painting. Her memory serves as a less objective image of the hole. The combination of the two provides the unique view found in each of her paintings. "I really enjoy painting golf landscape. It is some of the most beautiful and varied landscape in the world combined with a deep, historical sense of tradition that transcends time. The painting is a success when both elements emerge."Visit www.tourstrikershop.com and use the promo code "GTR" for FREE shipping on the Tour Striker!
